I'm reading too much into the headline "Everyone Is Reading Too Much Into Virginia’s Race for Governor/Many fear that if Terry McAuliffe loses, doom for Democrats is imminent. Don’t be so sure."

That's at The New Republic.

What I'm reading into that is that Democrats originally loaded a lot of meaning into that election, because they wanted to use it for leverage to argue in favor of their interests, to predict future success, and to demand support for vigorous exercise of ambitious power, and that now, they see a need to dismantle that foundation, because they think they will (or might) lose, so they want to unload the extra meaning attached and isolate the election as something random and local.

From the article, which is by Alex Shepard:

If McAuliffe loses to [Glen] Youngkin, it could throw an already chaotic scene into further disarray, as the various factions mull a response. A McAuliffe loss in a state that Joe Biden won by 10 points, and that a Democrat won by eight only four years ago, would be treated as apocalyptic harbinger—a sign of an imminent bloodbath in just a year’s time. Joe Biden’s agenda, along with all of the Americans who stand to benefit from its passage, could be a casualty in that mass panic....

Clearly, I'm cherry-picking, but that's there in the article with the headline chiding us about reading "too much" into the election.

When the articles start coming out downplaying a potential defeat by a long standing, well connected former Democratic Governor in a blue state, you know he's going to lose. The numbers must be clearly pointing to it.

From Terry McAuliffe to Ralph Northam and back to Terry McAuliffe appears to be too much even for random Democrats to swallow. As it turns out, Democrats are fine with a lot of bizarre ideas, but when you come for their kids in school, they seem to draw the line at that.

McAuliffe has run a crummy campaign but that could not be a factor. Telling parents they have no right to know what their kids are taught in school was a great moment. Arresting the guy whose daughter was raped by a guy in a skirt was brilliant.

Well, Terry McAwful is reduced to running ads (via “independent” PACs) questioning whether Youngkin would be friendly to second Amendment issues. Youngkin’s rating from the NRA is a question mark, which usually means that the candidate did not fill out the NRA questionnaire. However McAwful’s NRA rating is a solid ‘F’ so I doubt gun control is an issue that favors him. In fact McAwful had a slick commercial that touted his credentials as a gun grabber, but it was pulled after less than a day because in Virginia the commercial helped Youngkin and hurt Democrats.

That wasn’t the only McAwful commercial I have seen on TV that had to be pulled right away because it actually hurt McAwful and helped Youngkin. The guy’s kind of out of touch.

But the unforced error in the final debate where McAwful said that parents should not have input into what their kids are taught could cost him Loudoun County. That county is not just blue but iridescent blue, and I don’t see how Democrats win the state unless they carry Loudoun overwhelmingly.

But we will see.

Please add to your consideration the fact that last week the Democrats in charge of elections in VA asked to change the rules for mail-in ballots eliminating the requirement for signature matching, the same damn illegal maneuver so many other states did last year instead of the state legislators making the change, which is the way the Constitution spells it out.

YOU don't change election rules after voting has already started if you feel CONFIDENT, and such a desperate move telegraphs all you need to know about their need for this race to BE important, despite The New Republic's unpersuasive take of "move along. Nothing to see here!"

The taste of their flop sweat is delicious!

Virginia and New Jersey have governor elections the year after presidential elections. There is a steady trend of those races serving as previews for a big election for the outparty in the next year's congressional elections. In 2005, democrat Tim Kaine won in Virginia, democrat Jon Corzine won in New Jersey, and then the democrats took back the house in 2006. In 2009, republican Bob McDonnell won in Virginia, republican Chris Christie won in New Jersey, and republicans had a big year in 2010. In 2017 democrat Ralph Northam won in Virginia, democrat Chris Murphy won in New Jersey, and democrats had a big year in 2018.

The New Jersey race is maybe just not winnable for republicans now, but the trend is steady, and I bet it wouldn't be hard to find the same version of this article from the right or the left (depending on who lost those governor races) in those years. Perhaps some columnist someday will have the guts to say "my side lost these governor races and so it will probably be bad for us next year," but columnists these days are not particularly known for guts.

Nothing says confidence like moving the goalpost during the game! Why do they place so much importance on this race? Losing Virginia in 2009 was a precursor and preview of the shellacking Barry Obama got in 2010, that's why. Losing now will seal the deal on Nancy's retirement in 2022. By the way, two names that do NOT appear in TNR's piece of crap are Pelosi and Obama. Wonder why they are avoiding the subject that the headlione appears to nod at! These idiots are so predictable.

Since that would be the correct response, it's amusing that they're trying to pretend otherwise.

Hell, if McAuliffe wins by only 2% o less, it will still pretty much be a disaster for the Democrats.

VA Gov should be a "Likely Dem" race. If McAuliffe does not win handily, that's going to tell every single Democrat in Congress in a "Leans Dem" or "worse" district / State that they're facing a wipeout in a year.

If McAuliffe's problems are because "progressive" voters just don't turn out, that will push the Dems to the Left.

if McAuliffe's problems are because those who aren't hard core Left turn against him, that's going to push any "moderate" Dem who wants to win next year hard to the Right.

So far, what I'm reading is that it's that later, not the former, that's happening. But most of what we read last year at this time was utter garbage, so I'm going to wait for the actual numbers.

It means 4 years of Democrats in VA not getting to pass any of the laws they want.

It means that CRT becomes a nationwide big wedge issue. I don't think the Democrats are capable of pulling back on it. But if they lose in VA, it will show up in every suburban district in the country

It means the Gov going after teh school boards for 4 years, publicly calling out all their left wing BS. Which would end up flipping a lot of school board elections

And I expect it means down ballot effects. The State Senate is 21 D - 19 R. Flip two seats, and the Dems are still blocked even if McAuliffe wins.

If Youngkin does not fight this all the way up to the US Supreme Court (the US Constitution guarantees every state "a republican form of government." Allowing massive vote fraud destroys that guarantee), with poll watchers at every single Democrat counting place, he's not serious about winning.

This.
At the same time, i also know that there's trend away from the DemoCRaTs, among the Hispanics especially, which means that every election the 'CRaTs "win" moves more voters away from them. The kind of "win" the 'CRaTs are counting on depends on progressives being progressive about counting. So every election makes the DemoCRaTs more dependent on progressive vote counters and more likely to enact that agenda while at the same time every election is saying "move away from the progressives". Democracy is a marathon while autocracy is sprinter. Where will it end up?

Winning the governorship in a pretty solidly blue state doesn’t say anything about the swing congressional districts that will be the battlegrounds next year.

McAuliffe cut off a television interview in the middle saying he had to go somewhere and telling the interviewer that he should have asked better questions. Not good optics. It looked like he was running away from questions he couldn't answer. Too high and mighty. It's like when Marcia Coakley, the Mass AG, ridiculed her opponent, Scott Brown, for standing outside Fenway Park in the winter cold shaking hands with prospective voters. The problem here, though, is that Northern Virginia Democrats tend to have government jobs and to be more committed to voting in midterm elections than voters in other states, so they just might drag McAuliffe over the top.
