It does my heart good to see the grain fields of the Nation again. They are a wonderful sight. The record-breaking harvests you have been getting in recent years have been a blessing. Millions of people have been saved from starvation by the food you have produced. The whole world has reason to be everlastingly grateful to the farmers of the United States. In a very real sense, the abundant harvests of this country are helping to save the world from communism. Communism thrives on human misery. And the crops you are producing are driving back the tide of misery in many lands. Your farms are a vital element in America's foreign policy. Keep that in mind, that is of vital importance to us and to the world.
He's praising the people for the good they have done. It makes me think of JFK's "ask what you can do for your country" encouragement, but what Dionne is talking about is what your country can do for you — "what benefits [Republicans] propose to deny":
Do they want less child care? Less health coverage? More expensive drugs? No tax breaks under the child tax credit? And do recalcitrant Republican governors want an unending pandemic?...
But I read the whole Truman speech, beyond the part in that little video clip, and you can see how Truman gets around to denigrating Republicans. It's quite long, so these are highlights. And by the way, he had an audience of 80,000.
So long as the farmer, the worker, and the businessman pull together in the national interest, this country has everything to hope for. But it is terribly dangerous to let any one group get too much power in the Government. We cannot afford to let one group share the Nation's policies in its own interest, at the expense of the others. That is what happened in the 1920's, under the big business rule of the Republicans. Those were the days when big corporations had things their own way.
The policies that Wall Street big business wanted were the policies that the Republicans adopted.... You remember the results of that Wall Street Republican policy.... That was a painful lesson....
The Wall Street reactionaries are not satisfied with being rich. They want to increase their power and their privileges, regardless of what happens to the other fellow. They are gluttons of privilege. These gluttons of privilege are now putting up fabulous sums of money to elect a Republican administration. Why do you think they are doing that? For the love of the Republican candidate? Or do you think it is because they expect a Republican administration to carry out their will, as it did in the days of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover? I think we know the answer. I think we know that Wall Street expects its money this year to elect a Republican administration that will listen to the gluttons of privilege first, and to the people not at all.
Republican reactionaries want an administration that will assure privilege for big business, regardless of what may happen to the rest of the Nation.... You're not going to be fooled again by the slick propaganda of Wall Street.... What they have taken away from you thus far would be only an appetizer for the economic tapeworm of big business....
In this 20th century, every great step forward has come during Democratic administrations of the National Government. Every movement backward has come under Republican auspices....
I like the thematic unity about food. From the image of millions of human beings eating Iowa-grown food, Truman shifts to figurative eating by the "gluttons of privilege," "the economic tapeworm of big business."
That's just one Truman speech, but it attacks Republicans for extending privilege to big business, and Dionne's idea is to attack Republicans for being less enthusiastic about various benefits that Democrats want to flow to individuals. It might be hard to go "Truman-style" about how much money should go to child care and health care.
Dionne only devotes one paragraph to his Biden-as-Truman idea. He immediately swaps in a Biden-as-Reagan notion:
[Biden] also needs to be more vividly Reagan-esque in describing the stronger, fairer and more prosperous country he’s trying to build. Biden is not bowing to some “liberal wish list.”...
Ridiculous. First Dionne imagines Biden getting fiery about all the things Democrats want to give people and then he has him going big about how he's not doing that. Thanks for the useless advice, E.J.

Today the wealthiest businessmen in the US support and are in turn supported by the Democrats.
E.J. Dionne? ‘Nuff said. He’s always been a socialist.
Fuck you EJ.
The GOP is denying the American people exactly what? A Green New Deal that will totally destroy the American economy?
Wasteful spending to Dem special interests that will drive inflation through the roof?
Today the Street is all Dem. What does that tell you?
And I rather imagine that McCarthy really has a laundry list of boondoggles from the bill that he could put in front of voters that would drive Biden’s and Democrats’ poll numbers into the upper twenties.
We already have safely nets and tons of socialism in place. How about we fund what we have - which R's always do - and stop adding to the pile.
So far Biden administration has let in 600,000 - 2 million illegal entrants. Soon to be granted amnesty and access to tax payer funded free stuff.
The problems with Biden acting Trumanesque and Reaganesque are, first, Biden has dementia, and second, Biden's policies are antithetical to what Truman and Reagan wanted - a stronger, more prosperous US. I note also that Dionne isn't suggesting Biden be more Carteresque, or Clintonian, for what I am sure are reasons beyond the understanding of us mere mortals.
The left want messaging over substance. The real substance to redial leftwing-democratic politics is to destroy America, so they can greater and greater power.
"Harry Truman-style, Biden should press Republicans about what benefits they propose to deny to Americans who need them."
"propose to deny": the default is always that government must act, taxes must be raised, and Dems must be right. Anyone else is a denier.
Anyway, the notion that Slow Joe can mimic either Truman or Reagan is indeed ridiculous. Do Dems believe their own BS?
The deeper difference goes beyond style. Truman and Reagan loved their country. Modern Dems despise racist Amerikkka.
“Ridiculous. First Dionne imagines Biden getting fiery about all the things Democrats want to give people and then he has him going big about how he's not doing that. Thanks for the useless advice, E.J.”
But it is fun to contemplate. Just imagine Biden, in his little theater down in the bowels of EOB 1, pretending to be in the White House nearby, starting strong, then a couple minutes later losing where he was on his Teleprompter, and starting to mumble about Corn Pop, or whoever, and about something he imagined he did a half century earlier, and on and on. The few Republicans watching will have turned it into a drinking party, while the Democrats turn it off out of embarrassment, both for his sake, and their own, for having voted for such a senile incompetent. And then his wife kindly leads him off the stage, as his speech is cut mercifully short.
I notice an increasing number of advice articles for Biden like this one. Democrat supporters know Biden’s presidency is failing and are looking for a reboot without jettisoning their dreams for ever-increasing government. Articles like this one are simply a reframing to attempt to get the upper hand on Trump’s America First populist agenda. It will be very interesting to see if Biden attempts to distance himself from the Bernie Sanders agenda which is very unpopular outside the radical left.
Its the classic leftie idiocy: If you don’t accept our big unaffordable, unsustainable, inefficient overreaching government omnibus plan then show us your big unaffordable, unsustainable, inefficient overreaching government omnibus plan.
We could have a national conversation about the way Trump raised the standard of living of all Americans including record gains for all minorities…all in a very short period of time and in spite of overwhelming resistance but lefties don’t wanna have that national conversation…
To people who think like Dione there are only benefits and never costs and consequences. And quite often the costs and consequences exceed the benefits.
Writes E.J. Dionne in "Biden needs a reboot. Fighting for democracy is the key"
Democracy is not cash benefits government bestows upon citizens.
But I'm sure Webster is updating their online dictionary to eliminate any other.
“Ridiculous. First Dionne imagines Biden getting fiery about all the things Democrats want to give people and then he has him going big about how he's not doing that. Thanks for the useless advice, E.J.”
How about higher taxes, more IRS agents, higher unemployment, inflation, massive debt increases, electric brownouts and blackouts, more high speed trains from nowhere to nowhere, federally funded abortions, etc?
Harry Truman loved America. There's not a lot of evidence that Biden loves anything but the acquisition of control.
Also: HST was great at speaking plainly. JRB? Not so much.
The President has descended into dementia. Nothing he say or does will lessen that. Stick a fork in him - he's done. Next...
[Biden] also needs to be more vividly Reagan-esque in describing the stronger, fairer and more prosperous country he’s trying to build.
Define your terms.
Biden should just go full fascist now.
This will be the last time democrats "win" an election.
They will never win anything without mail-in "ballots" again.
I may be slow on the take, but I'm suddenly noticing the Dems and the MSM pressing this "Fighting for Democracy" theme. I'm hoping their hypocrisy backfires big time over the next 13 months.
"Fighting for democracy?"
That's a laugh coming from the party that stole the election.
"Today the wealthiest businessmen" in the world "support and are in turn supported by the Democrats."
I dare you to transcribe any of Biden’s recent public speeches and see the paucity of plain prose he delivers. Almost every sentence is tangled up and tortured by this old man. I’m amazed at how well the news blackout is working to hide the decline, so to speak.
This is definitely a good argument for helping the biggest most powerful businesses in the world make more money and have more power over everyone else.
Just be sure you explain it that way, and everyone will vote for us.
"[Biden] also needs to be more vividly Reagan-esque in describing the stronger, fairer and more prosperous country he’s trying to build."
I sincerely doubt Biden has much of an idea what's in the various proposals he's pushing. It was all decided and written by someone else, Joe is just along for the ride. Ask him to detail what's in these trillion-dollar proposals, and you'll likely get a Biden-salad of useless gibberish. But that's the way we are governed now.
If Biden were to give a Trumanesque speech excoriating communism and communists, half his remaining support would evaporate overnight.
Republicans could start listing and describing the leftist boondoggles in the "reconciliation" bill. A new one each day. The Media would ignore them, of course.
I wouldn't object to cheaper gasoline. Price is up 50% and rising since Biden took office.
Thanks, Joe. Tell us how great that is.
That's easy.
The GOP just starts listing all the Democrat pork passed in the past year. Actually, they should start with the Democrat pork in the 3.5 Trillion dollar "reconciliation" bill they're pushing, that's preventing the Democrats from passing the debt limit increase all by themselves (which they could do in a reconciliation bill).
It's amazing how stupid E.J. Dionne is, or at least how stupid he's been made by living in his left wing bubble
Yep, Ol Harry who wanted to nationalize the steel industry. Over a strike "down you wreckers, kulaks, cosmopolitans".
Politicians (good ones anyway) were literate then...
Biden should press Republicans about what benefits they propose to deny to Americans who need them.
Don't need to go back to Truman. This is a Clintonian tactic.
Also, notice how the brown-shirt left presents their agenda (the $3.5 trillion package) as already a reality that can only be undone. In their mind, there is no need to actually get people's consent BEFORE it is imposed on the country. They want it, so it is done.
Democracy is rule by the mob. Why would anyone want that?
Would these folks be OK with repealing, say, the 13 Amendment?
Black's (14%) would of course have the opportunity to vote against it.
But non-blacks (86%) would be given the opportunity to vote for repeal.
Insert chant her
"this is what democracy looks like"

Let's go Brandon!
Harry Truman called Dewey both a "Hitler and a Stalin", so you could say Truman was a very early example of a "lifelong republican".
I watch our leftist media grapple with things that don't follow their worldview, their narrative, and one word comes to mind watching them flail away with their hypotheses: Obtuse. My God...could EJ Dionne be more obtuse? They simply don't get it.
He writes: "Biden needs a reboot. Fighting for democracy is the key"
You don't fight for democracy by sending the FBI and DoJ to harass parents attending school board meetings. You don't fight for Democracy while opening wide our borders with the goal of replacing existing citizens. You don't fight for Democracy by putting people in jail, in isolation, for 8 months and counting, with no charges- simply because they are to be used as pawns by the Government to make a point. You do not fight for Democracy by fighting to disallow election integrity laws passed by states. Election integrity is Democracy. Without it, there is only Venezuela. Or California. Take your pick.
And finally, as any WaPo "journalist" should know- you don't fight for Democracy by censoring views that don't fit a pre-approved narrative. My loathing of our press could not run any deeper.
"Fighting for Democracy."
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Well E. J. Dionne is one of the more useless tools in the media shed.
But his idea that Biden can "fight" for anything is hampered by the reality of Biden's senility. In order to "fight" you need to be able. And Biden's lack of discernable ability of any sort (other than being the Big Guy who collects ten percent) reminds me of the aphorism about the chances of a one legged man in a backside kicking contest. Biden's chances are Slim and none and Slim just left town.
Big Mike said, "Today the wealthiest businessmen in the US support and are in turn supported by the Democrats."
Wasn't it true yesterday as well? My recollection is the first chairman of the SEC, the body which purports to constrain the greedy, unprincipled gluttons of Wall Street, was a wealthy real estate mogul and stock swindler, a Democrat named Joseph P. Kennedy.
Dionne is a great disappointment.
As long as we are recalling past progressive, and wealthy, presidents, howzabout Hoover? Maybe we can bring him back?
we could start with the homeless encampments all across the US cities. In the 30's FDR's folks labeled them "Hoovervilles"
We need to start calling them "Bidenvilles".
And what about Kung Flu? What's Joe gonna do about that? More people have died on Biden's watch, even with the vaccine and with additional knowledge than died on PDJT's watch without the vaccine and knowledge.
Why is Joe killing people? Mostly oldsters. Is this part of a plan to balance the budget b killing off useless eaters who contribute nothing? (A/K/A Old Folks)
Watch out, Ann. Now that you are retired you are taking money out of the system, not putting in. I understand you get a substantial retirement. If you were to die of kung flu, instead of that money supporting your extravagant (some would say) lifestyle, it could help Build Back Better.
John Henry
The entirety of the US government is now nothing more than a grifting operation. The Democrats and most of the Republicans are looting what capital is left that hasn't already been shipped to China.
I am going to predict that Sinema and Manchin eventually fold- they will be bought off or have kiddy porn planted on their computers with the threat they either get with the plan or go to prison. The Democrats are playing for keeps at this point. The "infrastructure" bill with all its other goodies will be passed by early next year. And if they won't do this to members of their own party, they will quite happily do it the RINOs in the Senate.
The Left wants to dupe people into believing the Dem party of 60 years ago is the same as the Dem party of today.
“The buck never stops.”
—- F. Joe Biden
Don’t forget that Truman came up through the Prendergast machine in KC.
Back when the Truman Boom happened after the publication of David McCulloch's biography, my father said that, although Truman made a lot of tough decisions in international affairs, he was a horrible, demagogic hack, and he wasn't that much fun have in office, particularly if you were trying to run a business, keep people employed, and serve customers. On the other hand, he was responsible for the creation of the State of Israel.
Biden should just go full fascist now.
He already has. Witness all the mandates, the prosecution of the parents, the dishonorable discharges for soldiers who won't get the jab.
The Democrat Party is the party of fascism.
The lowest approval ratings for a sitting president in the history of Gallup polling was Harry Truman at 22% in Autumn of 1952.
Imagine that. Lower than Trump. Lower than Carter. Even lower than W.
The People should press Biden about what Liberties he proposes to deny Americans (those Liberties granted by their Creator and further enumerated in the Bill of Rights).
Most egregious of those surrepticously usurped: the right to peaceably assemble (with less than two meter spacing) in public places.
Not to mention having to pay double for the right to access one's medical provider of choice or basic education provider of choice for one's progeny.
'Mr. Biden, you're no Harry Truman.' Apologies to Lloyd Bentsen.
The Federal government has spent trillions upon trillions of (our) dollars and decades of effort on things that would be oh so good.
Like eliminating poverty, stopping drug deaths, lowering crime, feeding the poor, fighting racism, educating our kids.... and on and on.
Is poverty gone? Are drug deaths eliminated? How's that crime rate? I've been told systemic racism is horrifying. And educating our kids, surely they are the top in the world. Right?
But now we need more trillions because the past efforts fell short. Indeed, many of the problems have worsened.
For example we spend more money per student than ANYONE. Yet our kids are far down the charts in such primary functions of schools like math and reading. So a bill with pre-K (don't look at Head Start non-results), "free" community college for kids with a diploma that doesn't require 8th grade reading comprehension, and larded with CRT (under any other name). Boy, THAT's the ticket.
So, sure, Build Back Better.... feh.
1. He said "green" fields.
2. Nice story about the speech and the event. National Plowing Match
3. "Plowing Match Princesses" for the win! Maybe the reason for the Trumpian sized crowd. Harry wasn't a great speaker.
Dionne is asking for something that has long been beyond Joe' Biden's meager skills - to be an inspiration, to stir others with the spoken word. I suspect he knows that and is merely wishcasting onto his computer as he watches the latest greatest opportunity for the Left recede back into cloud-cuckoo land

Yes and he was criticized when he walked in Pendergast's funeral. What he said then has been a rule of my life since I read it. Truman was a student of Roman history. He referred to a known Roman Senator and said, "His downfall began when he took his friends for granted and tried to bribe his enemies." That is a profound rule of life. We see it violated by every politician except Trump.
I never thought much of Truman, even after reading the Plain Speaking book. He just seemed like your normal midwestern Democratic pol I knew of in the 60s and 70s, plain-spoken and probably at least a little crooked. Repubs were not much better, and sometimes more crooked.
I used to laugh - my father, just a small city fireman, would always refer to Harry (the rare occasions he would) as "Horse Shit Truman". It was the only time I ever heard him use a Seven Dirty Word.
They are desperate to keep the base in line.
EJ wants to say that the Republicans will take way Social Security and all government support programs because they want people to starve to death. That is the tried and true call to the base of the party.
Oh Yeah. And they want to put y'all back in chains.
I was a populist on the left, and I’m a populist on the right. I just changed parties, not beliefs.
Most big firms are completely Democrat now.
It has been very interesting to watch a new alliance emerge, post-Trump. It’s hard to map because it’s all over the map. But it’s there. Centrists and extremists (both right and left), social conservatives and liberal-leftists. In real time, this is pretty amazing, especially because all the journalists and public intellectuals are telling us that precisely the opposite is happening. I don’t see it. I see people yearning for a time past labels and a recommitment to something unifying.
That has nothing to do with D.C.
Yes, the advice is useless but it is also telling. The Dem pundits and mouth-pieces (Dionne is more the later than the former) don't know what to do or how to address the mess they find themselves in. So their solution is a repeat of 'spend, spend spend and tax, tax, tax' stuff that worked long ago, but they seem surprised that it doesn't work any more. A big part of the problem is that so much of the 'spend' part goes to privileged Dem constituencies rather than ordinary voters -- so, the teacher's unions, the enviro feed-lot, health care unions, etc. As for the 'tax' part, most people know how that works out. And the CRT stuff that permeates all of it is pure electoral poison.
I met E.J. Dionne in person once at a cocktail party. I couldn't believe what a nebbishy dweeb he was.
It wouldn't be like that with Althouse commenters, would it? All the women would be witty and beautiful, and the men would be strong, urbane, and amusing, each of them attractive in his own way, but mysterious.
In the corner is Meade. Althouse says, "He is certainly good-looking. Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. A comma of black hair falling down over his right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there is something a bit cruel in the mouth."
Althouse herself is in another corner, maintaining a cruel neutrality. Who is she, and what does she want? Is she more Tatiana Romanova or Honeychile Rider? Is she part of Pussy Galore's Flying Circus? Will Meade write to her in Sing-Sing?
Chuck is--well--Chuck. A life-long Republican, he says. But can we believe him? Freder Frederickson says we can. Howard says, "Who cares? Life is a cabaret, old chum..." Drago, Dr. Michael K, and David Begley are having none of it.
Yup. It is time for an Althouse commenters drinks party. Let's go Brandon!
I propose... NO WORK... NO EAT.
You see signs that say, "Don't Feed the Bears", or "Don't feed the wildlife". Why? Cause it encourages them to come and get 'free stuff'. You are making the mistake of giving people 'free money' or 'free food' just encouraging them to not work for it.
So you need signs that say, "NO WORK, NO EAT". And give make work for the homeless. Clear highway trash, help build infrastructure, fixing graffiti, cleaning streets, even highway flagmen (not all homeless are crazy, some are just lazy.) I am sure there are ways they can work for their meals and lodging such as pre-fab houses they can stay in (for a low rent) as they work.
Now I am not saying to refuse to help the TRULY NEEDY. The crippled, blind, deaf, those that have a very hard time fitting into society. Yes there is compassion for those. Places like the Salvation Army where there are RULES (no drugs, go to church, try to find a job, etc..) I've toured the Salvation Army.. nice little apartments. They serve food there to. But they require some effort on those that go there.
Seems like long time ago this guy, Captain John Smith, said the same thing at Jamestown a three hundred years ago or so... so did St. Paul, two thousand years ago, wrote in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat. "
So.. NO WORK, NO EAT.
The policies that Wall Street big business wanted were the policies that the Democrats adopted.... You remember the results of that Wall Street Democrat policy.... That was a painful lesson....
The Wall Street reactionaries are not satisfied with being rich. They want to increase their power and their privileges, regardless of what happens to the other fellow. "Mr. Schlichter:
I've just read your lousy comments regarding Hunter’s whoring, crack smoking, money-grubbing ways. I've come to the conclusion that you are an 'eight ulcer man on four ulcer pay.'
Here’s the deal… it seems to me that you are a frustrated lawyer who wishes he could screw whores, smoke crack and paint. When you write such rightwing poppy-cock as was on the web-site you work for, it shows conclusively that you're off the beam and at least four of your ulcers are at work, you dog-faced pony soldier.”

OK, somebody has to say it. There are TOO MANY MIKEs here (including the ones trying to sneak in as Michael or mikee or whatever). They need to confess to and atone for their Mike privilege. Maybe identify with some other, now disfavored first name (George, though in the top three a hundred years ago, is now in the toilet but is *not acceptable* because I exercise my George privilege to say so, unless you're named for somebody 80 or older or are Greek, slavic, or hispanic (with their weird perversions of the name)).
Per Monty Python, Bruce would be totally be acceptable.
--gpm
P.S. I was named after my old man, who would be 110+ if he weren't, you know, dead, and was himself named after his grandfather. I don't recall ever meeting any else younger than me named George who wasn't named after somebody.
--gpm
The funny part is if Biden had taken office and done absolutely nothing but continue taking his 10% cut of the gift, his ratings would be OK.
The Chinese flu panic was receding, the economy was making a modest recovery, Afghanistan was pretty quiet, and even the blacks stopped taking a knee so football season could begin anew. But he tried to impose a truly un-american agenda on the public and his reward is to have football stadiums screaming fuck Joe biden on live TV.
He should probably get rid of Raggedy Jen Psaki too. She's not helping.
OK, somebody has to say it. There are TOO MANY MIKEs here
No such thing.
The funny part is if Biden had taken office and done absolutely nothing but continue taking his 10% cut of the gift, his ratings would be OK.
There’s a guy on YouTube who rehashes old NFL controversies on his channel. One of his favorite lines when discussing poor quarterback play is “If he had done nothing but spike the ball of every down he would have had a higher quarterback rating.” Yep, if Biden had done nothing at all, just slept until noon and napped all afternoon after eating ice cream for lunch, then got down to bed at 6:00, he’d be polling better.
gpm--So, I take it that your advice is to drop the Mikes? (ba-da-bing!)
This George idea is worthy. George Washington, the Father of Our Country! George III--you can read about him in the Declaration of Independence. Dare I mention George Floyd? I say, bring back George!
The problem with Dionne's advice is that the Democrats ARE bowing to some “liberal wish list.” There's no way to hide it from the people who need to be convinced, the voters of AZ and WV, and their recalcitrant Senators.
Which makes Dionne rather amusing. Being a is perhaps the best he can do.
Truman’s anti-GOP boss hog bit was hoary long before he first played it. The Parties were different too. You were either rich or a Democrat or a commie posing as a Democrat. The real divide was between the latter. The rich were often quite liberal and mostly irrelevant until that snobbish greaseball from Boston took credit for conservatism away from the men who really started National Review.
Maybe Dionne wants Biden to drop two atomic bombs on Japan and invade North Korea?
Key word: "need." For "liberals" and other State-fellators, "need" is the magic word that by-passes logical thought and suspends the laws of economics. "Need = right" is their dumbed-down version of the Argument from Pity.
