You gotta get rid of the high white socks- that just looks stupid. Also, the khaki shorts do scream "Old Man!"
And don't skip leg day at the gym.
Could be any of the 45 or so men in my neighborhood. I will say that 'men in shorts' crosses all ethnic and religious boundaries. Once here in Florida, you dress like it. The only difference is that I haven't crossed the line to tucking my shirt in. Yet. But I know that day is coming.
1. New Balance shoes come in extra wide sizes. As do feet on fat older guys like me.
2. Hanes socks are of good quality, last well, and are inexpensive. Dickies are better, and Wolverine padded work sox are the best.
3. Boxers are more comfortable than briefs. Don't argue. IT IS SO.
4. Dockers come in waist sizes larger than 34 inches. Lots larger. As do belts.
5. Shirts with pictures or words on them are for kids. I grant an exception for wearing his family's company logo to promote his own brand. But I wouldn't wear it. He should be wearing an inexpensive polo shirt, like a Walmart $6.99 "Faded Glory" that has neither a horsie, a gator, nor a swoosh on it. And he should own 6 in the same color.
6. Cut your hair short enough and all that styling, brushing, and product use can be avoided.
And stay off my lawn.
Wherein Althouse posts a clip from one of her favorite horror movies.
Khaki shorts shout "Old Man?" No way! I wear khaki shorts and I'm not old. I'm only . . . uh . . . well, . . . 68. Hmmm. When did THAT happen?
Yancy's right about the socks, however.
I have three pairs of those shoes.
I very much regret to say this strikes too close to home.
I like that the shoes were New Balance sneakers. I have been wearing New Balance sneakers since I was 18, not the same pair.
Really though: the white New Balance 624s really tie it all together. Alternately of course, the white New Balance 623s are also acceptable. Two pairs, always. The new shiny ones to wear out, the newest old pair relegated to lawnmowing and puttering.
That's not especially different than my usual outfit. My t-shirt generally has a pocket. Also I never tuck it in. It's small differences like that which distinguish the dressed from the well dressed...At what point in time do you cease caring or, for that matter, even knowing what's stylish or hip. I think it's about that time where you become invisible to the opposite sex, except for members of the nursing profession..
--I haven't worn shorts outdoors since I was nine, and I'm 64 now. Khaki or cargo shorts just look dorky.
--The trend toward minuscule socks the last decade or so is puzzling to me. I have worn white or black crew socks exclusively and have no intention to ever get the below-ankle ones. I have no intention of chafing my feet with those things.
If you can truss yourself when all men doubt you,
And wear white socks with sandals at the mall,
If neither friends nor family about you
Are wearing MAGA hats but aren't appalled.
I don't wear shorts, ever
That would be dressy for me.
From April to October or so I'll wear my four pair of shorts (some quite short--complain to my wife) and four or five big short-sleeve shirts (with pocket, always full) in rotation. Got plenty of tees (pocketed, etc) in various earth or sky tones too, but never tucked in.
Since I lost so much weight after retirement (now at 100kg perzackly!) I don't use the thick pressure socks, not even the white ones anymore. Not in summer anyway. A few pair each of thin khaki or white socks, folded down to ankle length, all resting on light or dark Margaritaville moccasins (from Sam's, made by sla -- err elves in China) or sandals,
complete the hot season wardrobe.
Mustn't forget the Mission hat, a recent acquisition and well worth the price.
Floridian here. I always wear shorts except during the occasional winter cold snap when it gets down into the 40s or lower. I like the black New Balance sneakers with the Velcro strips, with Balega ankle socks. Faster than tying laces. I prefer a good aloha shirt to a t-shirt, although I wear both at various times. I dress for comfort, and that's comfortable for me.
