Is this a cafe? Because I notice that the Associated Press is reporting that three children were killed in a Sunday drone strike on a vehicle in Kabul, which American officials say was carrying "multiple suicide bombers."

The family claims that the death toll is actually 9, with 6 of them being young children aged ten or younger. The family also denies being in any way affiliated with ISIS. Whom do we believe? The Biden administration’s intelligence services? I note that the Afghans might not be telling the truth either,

Well, I've seen several articles and editorials today that say virtually the same thing- ousting Newsom in California is a THREAT TO DEMOCRACY! Let's see, if 50% +1 vote him out- isn't that democracy?

Just read an opinion piece in The Atlantic by one Juliette Kayyem titled Vaccine Refusers Don’t Get to Dictate Terms Anymore. Kayyem gleefully muses on companies and organizations cracking down on those who have not chosen to get the COVID vaccines.

The undertone of fascism in her piece is unsurprising, however, when you read that she is "a former assistant secretary for homeland security under President Barack Obama, is the faculty chair of the homeland-security program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She is the author of Security Mom: An Unclassified Guide to Protecting Our Homeland and Your Home." I suspect that she only was concerned about "Protecting Our Homeland" from Republicans.

One sentence that gives the full flavor of her piece is this: Getting a shot to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 is both a social responsibility and the best way to hasten the end of the pandemic, and if you don’t believe that, we’re not waiting around for you to step up.

Later, she writes: The vaccinated have for too long carried the burden of the pandemic. In theory, unvaccinated people should be taking greater precautions. A recent poll conducted for the Associated Press found that vaccinated adults have been more likely than unvaccinated ones to wear masks in public settings, refrain from unnecessary travel, and avoid large group settings.

Our society is basically divided into two groups regarding COVID: Those who are terrified of it and in spite of having already gotten vaccinated, they persist in wearing masks at all times, even when driving alone in their cars; and those who are not terrified of it and have gone back to living their normal lives. I fall into the latter group. I got the vaccines, and I no longer wear a mask because I don't NEED to.

She concludes the piece by saying I know, I know: I should try harder to understand the feelings of unvaccinated Americans. Being more patient and empathetic would make me sound nicer... Nope, Juliette, there's nothing you could do to make you sound nicer. You are who you are.

“Two Lt. Colonels spoke out against their chain of command. One criticized a Republican president and was lionized by the press, protected by the intelligence community, and received a lucrative book deal. The other criticized a Democratic president and was fired within 24 hours.”

I agree with you, Clyde. Wife and I got our shots as soon as the governor permitted our age group to get them. But the pandemic is O-VER and I am way past being fed up with being jerked around by people who insist that I share their infantile fears. Where is this “normalcy” [sic] the Democrats were promising us this time last year? The proper response to Juliette Kayyem is that the rest of us are tired of waiting around for her and the rest of her ilk to grow up.

@Gospace, given the way Gavin Newsom has governed the state of California, I’d say instead that the recall is a threat to fascist autocracy instead.

Why wouldn't sunrises and sunsets look alike? It's mostly a matter of what the clouds are doing and the heat/cool cycle of day and night will have its effect, but at any given time, are the clouds really going to be that different based on whether the day is beginning or ending?

I don't get out to look at the sunset. Maybe I should. We live in an urban forest, so we don't get a view of the sunset from the house.

Is there a place on the eastern side of Lake Mendota where you can photograph sunsets? That would provide a certain symmetry with your sunrise photos.
