Kamala Harris is fully aware that as she stands there today that the eyes of many around the world are on Afghanistan...

"We are laser-focused on the task at hand," she says, her arms flapping nervously, as if she would like to fly away.

Last week on this blog, we were talking about comic actors doing characters. Remember? I thought a particular woman who was being made fun of might herself be a comedienne doing a character.

Freeman Hunt said, "But you usually try to take it just over the edge, amplify it a little. Therein lies the humor."

I responded, "Some of the best comic actors do not amplify it. Think of Charles Grodin and Phil Hartman." I was quite sure I'd heard a brilliant comic actor — who? — say that his trick was to copy the person exactly. Don't amplify. And watching Harris, just now — at 7:00 to 7:15 — I thought: That's it, that's what you copy. Copy that exactly. The words, the eye movements, the pauses, the arm jerks — everything. Resist all amplification. That would be hilarious. Painful too, but hilarious.

Maybe it has something to do with our socialization and inhibition. We're polite enough to refrain from laughing at real people trying to get through whatever they've got going for them, using whatever talent they have. But that restraint takes its toll, and when a comic actor takes the place of that real person, what a relief. It's finally okay to laugh.

But a comedian stepping up and giving us a chance to laugh at Kamala Harris won't bring much relief. She really is too dangerous. She's about to become President, and here she is on her Southeast Asian trip to show off her readiness to become President, and she does not project gravitas or even minimal sincerity. She seems afraid and insecure. The President is supposed to protect us, not require our protection.

UPDATE: Here's the press conference from yesterday — video, transcript. Asked whether she was "satisfied" with what was being done in Afghanistan —  "not the decision itself, but the operational steps that were taken" — she repeated her one talking point — the administration is "focused" on "the task at hand" (evacuating people) — and swiveled to the fact that she was standing there in Singapore:
So as the president has said, listen, this is a difficult mission. There’s no question about that. But our focus has to be on the task at hand. As it relates to America’s relationship around the world, I am standing here in Singapore because our commitment to a long standing relationship, which is an enduring relationship with the Indo-Pacific region, with Southeast Asian countries. And in particular, with Singapore.

Yes, Cacklin' Kamala is asking for a comic takedown. Won't happen: Dem female POC must be coddled, and the original performance is already too painful to become hilarious.

That's putting it mildly. Now consider why Dem elites foisted this scared, insincere lightweight on the country. And what does it say to actual African Americans that Kamala claims to be black--and was the most suitable black the Dem PTB could find?

I think we have elected the two stupidest people ever to occupy our two highest offices simultaneously. I can't imagine who comes close. Perhaps there are some 19th-century examples. Buchanan and Breckenridge were awful, but not in such a thick way as these two. Biden and Harris will bungle and giggle while the nation goes down the drain; the Big Guy will get his 10% and Harris will be the pretend office-holder that everyone in the world ignores. The presidency of the United States has been reduced to the level of prime minister of Mauritius.

Who was the Major US Politian, to be related to US slaves? (not Jamican Slaveholders)
Which Major US Politian was Most Closely Related to US slaves?
Why is it: That Well known Black Leaders (like Colin Powel, Barry O'Bama, CommieLaw Harris) always tend to be from Immigrant stock?

Who WAS It? That told females that if they're on TV, they should move their hands?
I noticed this first, with Hilary! Clinton. She would move a hand, WHENEVER she moved her lips. It was Hilarious. And, Obviously NOT a natural thing. Some Expert was telling her that she shouldn't stand stock still while talking, and she decided That meant she had to move her hands with EACH word.
Ms Harris doesn't move her hands with Each word; but, she moves her arms too.

I agree that this type of humor is effective, but I think that the audience has to firmly know they are in on the joke. The setup is important, and the video from last week, if it was an attempt at humorous imitation, does not do that. (That being said, I am firmly in the camp of "this person is genuine and I find it horrifying that they are involved in the care of young children.")

Not in the greater scheme of things anyway.

Comedy can be achieved through what you’re calling “amplification” and what I call caricature or exaggeration. It also can be achieved through the opposite: understatement. Think Liam Neeson doing a Ricky Gervais interview on AIDS (Google it: it’s hilarious). Overstatement makes the exaggerated trait absurd, understatement reveals a hidden trait or truth, brings it into consciousness and makes you go, “That’s so true!”

But can mere copying — exact duplication as you call it, Ann — work? If so I say it’s just understatement at works. You’re taking a trait that is already exaggerated and, by not further exaggerating it, understating it’s effect.

Joe Biden made none of these decisions.

Joe and Kamala were chosen. They were installed. The Democrat primary was an obvious farce. As was the 2020 presidential election.

It isn't even a conspiracy theory. All of the information you need happened in real time. Just follow Joe Biden's path step by step to his current situation.

What is happening now is obvious drive to crisis. Nancy is in the process of changing house rules to get the "infrastructure" bill passed. True inflation is double digit. The military is being humiliated and gutted by it's leadership.

This is an illegitimate regime looting the treasury on the way out. They know they are illegitimate. We know they are illegitimate. They know we know.

This is an international group. We see what they want to do in Canada and Australia. But they don't have sufficient control of the military outside of Washington DC to do it. There is a massive disconnect between DC military and outside of DC military. The people in the 82nd in Afghanistan right now are very angry that they cannot help the Brits and French outside the base.

Joe Biden is going to be the end of the uniparty in DC.

Harris's problem is that she's not (and never was) ready for Prime Time. She is like her fellow California Democrat party favorite Gavin Newsom. Newsom was recently blasted by a long time California political columnist as not "likeable". Newsom, Harris and Hillary Clinton all fail to be "likeable enough" to win out in the rough and tumble of the national political scene. From former Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass:

Watching President Joe Biden on Sunday struggle to spin away from his disastrous and inept withdrawal from Afghanistan—leaving thousands of Americans on the ground at the mercy of the Taliban—what worried me most isn’t what he said.

What he says isn’t believable. He’s known to all in Washington, even to the Democratic Media Complex that protects him, as a fabulist bag of wind. And on Afghanistan, the president has flip-flopped and lied far too often for anyone to believe anything he says.

What worries me in addition to his incompetence is his style, the way he presents the presidency to the world, with those watery and unfocused blue eyes, Biden babbling softly while reading his teleprompter in the White House.

Such is the President of the United States of America.

It was like watching some foreign film actor who can’t speak a word of English reciting his lines phonetically for Hollywood, issuing pleasant sounds devoid of meaning in place of cold, hard ideas and realities.

Kass concludes:

What keeps Joe Biden afloat for now, is that the American people understand who would replace him:

President Kamala Harris

Many years ago, I read that JFK listened to Winston Churchill's wartime speeches to pick up the cadence and inflection and make them his own. Of course, Kennedy had a great speech writer in Theodore Sorenson.

Harris seems seems determined to adopt Obama's cadence and inflection. It doesn't work because it's just not her. And it doesn't work because the speech is not a thundering oration but a rather ordinary discussion of policy. She both needs better speech writers and a better sense of how to deliver different types of remarks.

The entire video is over an hour, and my first thought was that I couldn't imagine listening to Harris that long. So, I scrolled ahead to see if there is Q&A or some other "relief". Indeed there is.

After some "commentary" by the news folks, much of it about US reliability in the light of Afghanistan, there is a panel discussion led by former Singapore Ambassador-at-Large Chan Heng Chee. The emphasis is also on US reliability.

So, imagine my surprise when the former Ambassador reached into history and mentioned Vietnam and the Cold War. At 37:22, she used exactly the same words I used in a comment the other day on this blog. Referring to the 1991 Gulf War, she said, "The US got its mojo back".

Makes me wonder if Singaporeans read Althouse and all the comments.

You can Google the phrase and see it applied to so many areas that "scattershot" would be more descriptive. And finally, as a bouquet to everyone who knows the rumors of how Kamala Harris got her start, the universe throws in "Stimulated Emission" as a comic bonus.

Seth Barron, in his American Mind article of yesterday said of the Afghanistan debacle that "It may hasten the ascension of Kamala Harris, who knows how to take orders and do what she’s told." While the rest of his piece may well be spot-on about the affair being a deliberate pushback against the Biden administration, I think his assessment of Harris is flawed. I don't think she can learn to appear Presidential, nor will she be willing to take orders from the elites in the Military Industrial Complex.

Kamala Harris is a product of the system Democrats use to choose female leaders.

How do such stupid people as Maxine Waters, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Hank Johnson rise to positions of power in this country? The Democrats are so afraid of being called racists and sexists that they simply cannot criticize the idiots in their party if they present as female or gay or of color.

Since ambition and intelligence are not related, that allows stupid but ambitious people to move up in the party.

Only the Biden administration could be so blind as to do something to remind us all that we are chaotically fleeing Afghanistan just as we did in Vietnam.

While I agree with you about the stupidity of our chief executive and his VP, you're not entirely correct about laser beams not being focused. While the beam is coherent it can be focused to a certain depth. I own a couple of low powered laser engraver/cutter machines. They most certainly have focusing lenses that narrow the beam at a precise focal depth. You want all that energy concentrated at the depth where you want it, not above or below the work surface.

She speaks in such an awkward manner -- 3 or 4 words, then pause, 3 or 4 words, pause -- even though she's just reading the telep'er. When she speaking off the cuff rather than reading the telep'er, it's worse. And the body language is robotic -- mechanically shifting between the two telep'er screens, all with the choppy hand waving going on and off. No point in even discussing the substance -- that was mostly cliches and empty since it was all fluff and misdirection uch as it is,

Sleepy Joe and Kamala -- what a pair. And yet, here we are.

Kamala suddenly tried to abandon her trip to Hanoi because of fears. They say it was fears of Havana Syndrome. But I think those strange jerky motions Althouse was pointing out were Kamala realizing she might become President very soon. Not being senile, knowing herself, she gets Simone Biles syndrome - the pressure gets to her and she "loses her way in the air."

@gilbar--

That's "the short pants" to you, bub.

Besides Truman, name one president who had been a senator who wasn't mediocre or worse.

Andrew Johnson was a disaster; Truman; JFK overrated at best; LBJ probably the most twisted person ever to occupy the White House, and a cowardly failure to boot. H H Humphrey?

The voters passed on Mondale, Dole, Sore/Loserman, Kerry, McCain.

Obama was there briefly, but already fast-tracked by the DPTB; Clinton. Now one old kabullshitter and an airhead.

I've noticed over the decades that the least enthusiastic supporters of senators who want to be president are often those that know them best--their fellow senators of the same party. Some of that is jealousy and pique, of course, but it's also realistic appraisal.

Senators per se never have to actually run anything. Not even their offices, or their committees. Not a place to look for executive leadership at all, at all.

I don't get it.

How hard can it be to practice speaking in a calm, steady voice, with some basic hand movements? By sheer rote learning, I would expect the most untalented orator to be better than this after a few months of intensive tutoring.

Probably...but shorts will be optional : )

If headwear is a part of the new dress code, it’s all good. If it’s not… well, Afghans won’t be needing it.

Before the election I created a number of "Harris for President" campaign themes:

Harris 2021-You’ll look back fondly on 2020.
Harris 2021-Proof the Constitution is a suicide pact.
Harris 2021-The President nobody voted for.
Harris 2021-You got punked, America.
Harris 2021-Primaries? Pfft!!!
Harris 2021-Proof the Democratic Party isn’t.
Harris 2021-Inspired by The Iliad.
Harris 2021-Let’s get this coup started!
Harris 2021-Out of my way old man.
Harris 2021-Thanks to the Media’s Offensive Line.
Harris 2021-Who needs an election?
Harris 2021-Does this mean I can rule for three terms?
Harris 2021-Elections are for the little people.
Harris 2021- This is how you do it, Hillary!
Harris 2021-She’s already President
Harris 2021-# Resist

Well played gilbar. I wasn't even thinking that when I wrote it.

MalaiseLongue: Chris Lopes nailed the difference. You fall up the stairs, you get a bruise.

if Joe falls down the stairs, he's in the hospital.

As for Harris and splitting ties, I got this from Volokh:
And the body of the Constitution provides:

The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

The Senate shall chuse their other Officers, and also a President pro tempore, in the Absence of the Vice President, or when he shall exercise the Office of President of the United States.

And a VP who isn't currently "President of the Senate" doesn't get a vote in the Senate.

So, here's an amusing question: exactly what does it take for the President to nominate a judge or executive branch official, or to sign a law?

If the President hasn't been seen in public for a while, could Senate Republicans sue to demand proof that he actually did make the nomination, rather than his staff / wife doing it?

This was the natural progression that started with electing an unqualified Obama, then nominating a horrible Hillary.

It started well before that.

Against Bush Sr. They first put up Mike "Arugula" Dukakis.

The second time they thought Bush was a lock, so threw that kid Clinton in so the big names (Mario Cuomo, Ted Kennedy, Al Gore, and others) would have a shot in '96. Whaddya know, the kid won.

Against GWB they put up Al "Chakras" Gore.

Against GWB the second time they put up John "Jenghis" Kerry.

Dems went with a new strategy in '08, puffed up an unstable John McCain for GOP nomination, and got Cover Boy Obama elected fair and square.

Dems repeated the "Good Republican" playbook with Romney, turned on him and painted him as a Nazi dog-torturer, and Obama was re-elected.

Dems tried for the trifecta, gave Trump $2B worth of air time, thought Hillary "I invented the Cackle" Clinton would walk all over him. Woops.

It does not matter if the role is comedic or dramatic, the actor must be fully invested in the reality of the character. The reality starts with the text. Shakespeare gives his great comedic roles (Falstaff, Polonius, Dogberry, etc.... Shakespeare writes blowhards very well) a rich, unique pov. Actors who try play them for laughs break the spell.

There is an element of performance in political speech-making. In this clip, Harris is merely reciting. I don't believe she means anything she says.
