"Because of potential security threats outside the gates at the Kabul airport, we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time."

Says a security alert just issued by the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, quoted in "US Embassy in Afghanistan tells citizens to stay away from Kabul airport" (NY Post).

Have no knowledge that there are problems getting to the airport....
Not aware the State Department said do not go to the airport....
Boy are we doing a great job of holding the airport....
Change in mission to go get our people? See above about operational...

So the Pentagon did not know the State Department said don't try to get to the airport. Damning.

What the Biden Buffoons are hoping, and is their priority, is that any Americans that may be killed be killed far away from any TV cameras and any American military eyes so Biden can claim his plan worked.

San Diego's Union Tribune newspaper this morning had a headline that Camp Pendleton Marines were going to be sent to Afghanistan to help with the evacuation.

Since I've read that Afghanistan is the size of Texas, trying to form a phalanx to cover the country is going to take more troops than the US has.

Best case scenario is that this Biden initiated disaster will end by say the end of September with all the Americans now in Afghanistan either evacuated or dead. Things could go downhill from that result--hostages etc. There will be other knock on effects. Trump was said to be very damaging to NATO. Biden's clusterflap will destroy NATO. Daddy Warbucks America is no longer a reliable military partner.

Left Bank of the Charles said...

Could the number of U.S. citizens remaining to be evacuated from Afghanistan number in the hundreds rather than in the tens of thousands? Fifteen hundred would be a much smaller problem than fifteen thousand, four hundred much smaller than forty thousand. Here’s the travel advisory we issued on June 28:

“Do not travel to Afghanistan due to COVID-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict. U.S. citizens wishing to depart Afghanistan should leave as soon as possible on available commercial flights.”

I think the ANA may have taken that advisory as their signal to surrender. And the idea of there being be tens of thousands of U.S. citizens still in the country may be being used to persuade the Taliban to keep the Kabul airport open for evacuation of Afghan civilians.

The travel advisory identifies by implication another category of U.S. citizens, those not wishing to depart Afghanistan. That group has grown smaller, as many trying to leave now were presumably in that category on June 28. I wonder how many will stay?

How many times has it happened that Americans are trapped in-country after a change of government? I'm seeing Beirut in 2006, and of course Saigon in 1975 (two years after the official U.S. withdrawal). In March-April 1975, a lot of Americans were able to fly out on commercial flights, and then the U.S. military evacuated a lot of people. It sounds like every American who wanted to get out was able to get out.

"As early as the end of March, some Americans were leaving the city.[30] Flights out of Saigon, lightly booked under ordinary circumstances, were full.[31] Throughout April the speed of the evacuation increased, as the Defense AttachƩ Office (DAO) began to fly out nonessential personnel. Many Americans attached to the DAO refused to leave without their Vietnamese friends and dependents, who included common-law wives and children. It was illegal for the DAO to move these people to American soil, and this initially slowed down the rate of departure, but eventually the DAO began illegally flying undocumented Vietnamese to Clark Air Base in the Philippines.[32]"

"On 3 April, President Gerald Ford announced "Operation Babylift", which would evacuate about 2,000 orphans from the country. One of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy planes involved in the operation crashed, killing 155 passengers and crew and seriously reducing the morale of the American staff.[6]:157[33] In addition to the over 2,500 orphans evacuated by Babylift, Operation New Life resulted in the evacuation of over 110,000 Vietnamese refugees. The final evacuation was Operation Frequent Wind which resulted in 7,000 people being evacuated from Saigon by helicopter."

I wonder if the request was real but the reason is speculative. If the CG of the 82nd Airborne asks the SAS to stand down, is it because he's worried about looking bad, or is his G3 preparing for running missions, and thinking about making sure their guys don't end up pointing weapons at each other outside the airport?

It's a disgraceful request if the former, and a pretty reasonable one if the latter. And it does make me sad, I can't dismiss as absurd the idea that a U.S. Army two-star would make that request because he's concerned about appearances. I can only hope not, and I'm running low on hope.

And as George Conway just noted; "If only we had started evacuations earlier … we would have had this earlier."

The Taliban blitzkrieg didn't really kick off until early August. They didn't take Kabul until August 16. We announced unconditional withdrawal back on April 15. So there were four months in which SIV applications could have been expedited and American citizens could have been evacuated from Kabul, before the Taliban took control of the streets and the airport entrances. To suggest that we'd have had the current chaos whether the Taliban were in control or not seems highly implausible.

As I've commented before, though, I don't really hold Biden primarily responsible for this mess. Blinken and Milley should absolutely resign in disgrace, but more than either of them I think this is a failure of the working level civil service to execute the President's policy in a minimally competent fashion.

That said, perhaps Conway's point is actually that with the garbage experts and civil servants who staff State and Defense today, there's no scenario in which any large scale evacuation isn't a total disaster.

And I guess that's not totally unreasonable.

Conversely, if our experts and civil servants were actually good at their jobs, we probably wouldn't be facing quite as much of a mess as we are today.

Conway must be pretty dumb and unimaginative. The weakest thriller writer could have come up with ten scenarios. For one:

1. Today, Beiden declares a surge to support Afghanistan and moves in 10,000 troops with Seal teams and SF.
2. Tells taliban leaders that as generals of a warring army they will be personally responsible for atrocities and women killing, Seals will arrest them dead or alive.
3. Afghan government army told to put up or shutup. Gets 60 days to act to control Afghanistan.
4. US troops collect and control arms in guarded bunkers. Arms issued to Afghan army as needed and inventoried, stored arms, vehicles, and aircraft contain radio detonated Thermite grenades.
5. US cuts civilian contracts slowly reducing worker count, US embassy has huge Christmas party and says all Americans should attend. Same for allied nations.
6. day after Christmas civilian evac starts. Excess weapons blown or removed. Troops with AC 130 and A 10 support enforce a red perimeter around Kabul. If satellites see columns of taliban in the red line shoot them up.
7. When all Allied and US and worthy Afghans are gone, crater all the runways with radio mines and we are gone.

Something smarter than this could have worked.

Could the number of U.S. citizens remaining to be evacuated from Afghanistan number in the hundreds rather than in the tens of thousands?

Well, given the gross incompetence of the Biden* Administration, anything is possible.

Is it likely? Only if the Taliban has areal killed thousands of Americans.

“Do not travel to Afghanistan due to COVID-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict. U.S. citizens wishing to depart Afghanistan should leave as soon as possible on available commercial flights.”

Ladies and gentlemen, the Biden* Administration in action! Your worries about Afghanistan, then said about 7 weeks ago are, in order:
1: Covid
2: Crim
3: Terrorism (note: attacks by the government, which the Taliban now is, or even just operating military forces, aren't what's meant by "terrorism" here)
4: Kidnapping (by lone criminals)
5: Armed conflict

So they need to get to 5th and last before they mention the threat from the Taliban.

I think the ANA may have taken that advisory as their signal to surrender. And the idea of there being be tens of thousands of U.S. citizens still in the country may be being used to persuade the Taliban to keep the Kabul airport open for evacuation of Afghan civilians.

Wow, so what you're saying is that you think the Biden* Administration's incompetence caused teh ANA to collapse faster than it otherwise would have?

Some commenters appear to take comfort in the idea that the Taliban can’t use or maintain sophisticated military equipment

I believe that Chinese, Russian, and Pakistani technicians will assist them and they will quickly get up to speed. Also, they have something with market value to trade.

You don’t need a lot of training to operate the complex machinery, only to operate it effectively. They can also afford to loose 50 or 75 percent of that equipment while figuring it out. That still leaves a lot of mad men in charge of a lot of very dangerous equipment.

Badri 313 unit in charge of Kabul..... SF unit. Yes some well trained Tailban.

I suspect all of Afghanistan will be one US civilian hostage camp soon. Try to free 500 of 'em and they will kill a few thousand around the country.

This will make the Iranian hostage crisis seem like small potatoes.

Thanks Biden & Harris.... thanks a bunch.
