"Writing about gender differences within the Latino vote is inherently thorny terrain. There’s a long-standing, racist stereotype..."

"... that associates Latino men with machismo — and, as we all saw for the past six years, Trump’s political brand was built partly on an exaggerated macho sensibility. Ian Haney López, a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley, told me that there is a risk of reducing Latino men’s support of Trump to being about machismo — which takes 'a pervasive social dynamic' and makes it into 'an attribute of Latino culture.' 'Patriarchy is a problem across racial groups,' he says, though he adds: 'It’s also fair to say if you’re a man in a low-status group, masculinity may become more important to claiming high status.' A better place to start might be jobs.... Trump’s image as a straight-talking businessman was definitely part of what appealed to my dad. He liked that Trump was a graduate of the Wharton School and that the former president grew up with men similar to those who worked with my grandfather...."

From "Trump, My Dad and the Rightward Shift of Latino Men/Why are Latino men moving away from Democrats? And how can liberals win them back? For me, it’s a topic that hits close to home" (WaPo).

There's a risk that a stereotype might be true. Oh noes!

"In Latino culture machismo is more than just a word as it is so embedded in the culture that it is not only accepted, but often even expected."

Cause they realize that constant, uncontrolled immigration keeps wages low and while it might be great for upper class gringos, not so much for middle and working class Hispanics? Or maybe they worry that somebody might decide to have their kid's balls cut off and put him on puberty blockers, which the Democrats seem to be absolutely giddy over? Or maybe the condescension they get when they attend school board meetings to complain that their kids or spending way to much time learning to hate whitey and about anal sex and not nearly enough time on math? Or maybe its because Hispanic is a made up category and Central and South America are huge regions that, in addition to the original Spanish and Portuguese settlers had, like the US, waves of immigrants from all over the world over a couple of centuries and each country in those regions has its own unique culture and history?

There's something darkly funny about the fact that the GOP establishment has for years tried to claim that latinos are "natural conservatives" but then fought tooth and nail against Trump, the only Republican who's attitude and history could hope to win over those latino voters.

Don't worry, once we have amnesty all those "natural conservatives" will gravitate to us based on the draw of lower corporate income taxes, outsourcing manufacturing jobs overseas, and the "blessings of liberty" that are drag queens twerking for children. Please clap.

But it's a non-starter. Dems just told us in the Covid "relief" bill that you need no stinkin' job. All you need is a handout, for the children. What's missing from this excerpt, and I'm not going to read the article, is that Latinas expect their men to be men. So, Latinos behave like men in order to attract women.

White women have buried that expectation under the crusty layers of "feminism" and are so far gone, they don't even realize that when they bitch about men, that's what they're missing. An actual man.

Unless you consider his management style as Machismo.
Its not. It's goal driven. What's the goal OK here are the steps I'm going to take to reach the goal. No room for 'feels' or pc adherence. No focus on diversity, or concern for how it will affect political capital. Goal>actions>actions>evaluate>goals>actions>results.
No touchy feely for those looking for validation by seem means other than results.

I'm going through this with a social group I found myself in charge of.
The old way was lots of committees, lots of talk, lots of concern about how the leadership is perceived.
I've found the mission statement, defined the goals and taking steps to reach goals. I have heard there are hurt feelings. I tell all the rest of the committee to have those concerns call me. My phone is silent. I will listen to all. My driving guiding light will always be the mission statement. My safe haven. My fortress that cannot be breached.

That's not machismo, its goal driven action.

Allow me to be blunt: "Machismo" is the natural state; feminism is not. The reason Latin men are still in the former state is that they haven't had to deal with 100 years of soul-sucking American public schooling. Yet.

That sounds like Uruguay. Given the massive Italian immigration to Uruguay and Argentina, it would be surprising if people there didn't speak with remnants of an Italian accent. Apparently, there is a language or dialect in the north of Uruguay called Uruguayan Portuguese or Riverense or fronteiriço, but a freer, more improvised form of communication called Portuñol or Portunhol also exists throughout the country, at least according to Wikipedia. Distinguishing between languages and dialects and improvised forms of communications is hard, though. Over the border in Brazil, some cities and towns have dialects of Italian or German as official languages in addition to Portuguese.

Sure, Trump did provide minorities more of what they really needed, by actually trying to improve the economy, instead of seeing government service as a mechanism for graft and getting rich. But he also had a swagger, a bombast, that working class men like, as well as do Hispanic men. This was long a mainstay in Dem politicians, with their ties to working class and minority communities (and, yes, Joe Biden had much more of than Barack Obama, who was smooth and bland enough to be an old style Republican politician), while Republican politicians portrayed themselves publicly as urbane and non offensive. Look how more sophisticated we look than those crude Democrats. But the party boundaries are changing, with Republicans moving down market into formerly strong Dem strongholds, while the elite college educated demographic moves towards the Democrats, because that is where they see the money and power. Long run, I think that the advantage is with the Republicans, because the Democrats have to defend themselves on two fronts, with their split constituencies: the rich and educated on the one side, and welfare recipients on the other. They cannot have a consistent message, because the needs of the two constituencies are so different.

But by this past November, something had changed. As far as I can tell, my dad voted while breathing through his nose as clearly as somebody could when wearing a face mask. Not only did he enthusiastically support Donald Trump, he gave money to the Republican National Committee. Though he has supported every GOP presidential candidate since 1980, he now contrasts them all unfavorably with Trump. “They can’t compare with what Trump has done,” he told me recently. “And some of the things that he came up with I said, ‘Oh man, why did you do that, Trump? That’s not going to go over well.’ And it turns out, my God, what a brilliant move! I had no idea. He’s just a master.”
<
Both Latino men and women may share economic and status anxiety, of course. But Latinas — like female voters across ethnic categories — were repelled by Trump’s disrespect toward women and his bragging about sexual assault. "

Hmmm...sounds similar to the broader dynamic. Perhaps WAP00 is overplaying race, unexpectedly.

" Indeed, when I asked my dad about what he liked about Trump, he replied, “Oh my God, son, the list is endless.” As he walked around his neighborhood in January — 10 days after Biden was inaugurated — and spoke to me on the phone, he rattled off a litany of what he saw as Trump’s accomplishments: lower taxes, diplomatic agreements between Israel and its Arab neighbors, the low Black and Latino unemployment rates before covid-19 wrecked the economy. He praised Trump’s tough stance on China and his move to subsidize farmers to offset the effects of his trade conflict.

None of these policy preferences are unique to Latinos or to Latino men.

Having grown up in Latin America, Machismo, is a term of endearment and Latin Women expect that of men. Some bloggers on this site state that "white women" don't care for the "Patriarchy"? Really? Then why do so many "white women" want to marry men that are at least 6 foot, have 6 figure incomes, 6 pack abs and 600 horsepower cars. BTW, these type of men are rare, so supply and demand is a problem.

But I digress, "WaPo" and their writer know that if Democrats lose Hispanics, it's the end of their power. In fact, statistics show that new immigrants vote in large numbers for Democrats. Unfortunately, statistics also show that the second generation of Hispanics are quite conservative and vote accordingly. Democrats are associated with destroying the family unit, since the mid '60s, attack religion and Hispanics beliefs (the Gay crowd) because by and large Hispanics are overwhelmingly against Gay Marriage. 14 countries in Latin America, in a Pew Research Study, people voiced, by more than 50%, that they are against Gay Marriage. This does not bode well for Democrats and their current propoganda for LGBTQ. In fact, Puerto Rico, the most Americanized of Latin Countries, are in opposition to Gay Marriage by 55%.

In other cultures the more empathetic appearing person (read: weaker) is more appealing. Think: Obama. But here in the US we've had a mix of both strong and weak leaders (we're setting new standards for weak leadership currently).

The US media portrays strong leadership as akin to Dictatorship mixed with Nazism. It's not the case here at all. But it's the premise of articles that talk about how Hispanics are moving toward the right. The thing often left out is that many Hispanics from South America, Central America, and obviously from Cuba, have lived under Socialism and extreme Dictatorships. They've lived under extreme LEFT rule previously.

And they don't want it anymore. They moved here hoping to get away from that.

Texas Monthly has a very good article about the white liberal gentrification of Austin. White liberals from Silicon Valley are now targeting black and Hispanic car clubs that have existed for decades. The same people that demand "defund the police" demand the police shut them down-

One particularly vocal tenant, a non-Hispanic white woman with short blond hair who appeared to be in her fifties, claimed that smoke from the tires was killing nearby trees and that traffic from the gathering would make it impossible for an ambulance to reach her in the event of a medical emergency (though two other roads to the apartment building remain accessible at all times). Another Weaver resident voiced more generalized criticism, calling the event a “display of toxic masculinity.”

..a twentysomething member of a car club in shorts and a T-shirt, who said he goes by the nickname “Kilo,” calmly watched the bizarre scene unfold. Born and raised in Austin, he said he’d been coming to the park to check out custom cars and connect with old friends since he was a kid. He wondered why instead of calling the police and creating unnecessary tension the blond woman and other angry residents hadn’t walked across the street and introduced themselves first, opening up dialogue. “If you come with good energy, you’ll find out that we’re just here to chill and enjoy the cars and the scenery,” he said. “Don’t be scared.”

So it's a sporting event. You know, like tennis or something.

People want what they cannot have. It's just human nature.

How about this: We stop categorizing the way people think based on the way they look?

For some reason, political strategizing has now made it ok to do this in every aspect of our lives.

What Makes America Great?

It's candied apples and ponies with dapples
you can ride all day!
It's girls with pimples
And cripples with dimples
that just wont go away !
Its spics and wops and niggers and kikes
with noses as long as your arm!
Its micks and chinks and gooks and geeks
and honkies
(Honk! Honk!)
who never left the farm !

This is great news...

Chavez was NOT a fan of illegal immigrants taking his farmworkers' jobs.

I believe he referred to them as 'wetbacks.'

Now if only Joe takes his cues from Cesar.
