"Unlike so many Hollywood roles, the sexuality at the core of hers wasn’t cute or passive or submissive."

"It was challenging, confrontational, defiant; she stared into the camera with those remarkable eyes, almost daring us to return her gaze. The parts became increasingly transgressive: in The Night Porter, Rampling has a sadomasochistic relationship with her Nazi torturer; in ’Tis Pity She’s A Whore she has an incestuous affair with her brother; and in Max Mon Amour, she cheats on her diplomat husband with a chimpanzee. 'Ah, the ape – I love it,' she says affectionately.... Rampling says she simply wasn’t interested in Hollywood. 'Let’s use a nice old English expression: it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I wanted to go into the auteur and European world of the semi-darkness.'"

From "Charlotte Rampling: ‘I am prickly. People who are prickly can’t be hurt any more’ She’s best known for her dark, difficult roles, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. The actor talks about swinging in the 60s, family tragedy – and why she’s still got It" (The Guardian).

Rampling is 75, and she's still doing movies. She's been in so many things over the years, beginning with the uncredited role of Girl at Disco in "A Hard Day's Night." I haven't seen many of them at all. Avoided "The Night Porter," which was a big deal in its time (1974). I did see "Stardust Memories" (1980):

I looked up "Max Mon Amour," and I've got to say the poster is very nice:

From the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes (where it has a 22% rating): "Impossible to take seriously or as satire, this film is an embarrassment to humanity and our cousins in the jungle"/"A wry mix of King Kong and My Man Godfrey, it's a potent premise that somehow never catches fire."/"On the whole, it works as a witty, black comedy of manners that judiciously avoids the vulgarity inherent in the subject."

The Guardian says "the sexuality at the core of hers wasn’t cute or passive or submissive," but are we to take these movies — which she did not write or direct — as expressive of Rampling's sexual core? She got the roles she got. This seems like a good place to bring up Sharon Stone's new memoir. Here's an article about it in TNR, "Sharon Stone and the Fantasy of Female Domination/At the peak of her fame, she exuded total control on screen. According to her new memoir, a different story played out behind the scenes."

A woman’s performance of power in public—the all-knowing sexual omnipotence built into the idea of Sharon Stone’s celebrity, you could say—has had little to no correlation, in her experience, with her day-to-day life.... As an adult, Stone saw the famous crotch-shot in Basic Instinct for the first time in “a room full of agents and lawyers, most of whom had nothing to do with the project.” All she had been told was, “We can’t see anything—I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on.”...

In 2018, an interviewer asked Sharon Stone if she had any #MeToo stories, and she laughed long and bitterly....

That poster is very Al Jolson-ish.

I fell in love with her in Zardoz. Very campy; very sexy; ooo the flesh.

Hi! I may remember Rampling from such televisional series as Dexter, where she played a bullshitty psychiatrist, but not from such such televisional series as Broadchurch, where she was never even noticed.

PS: chimp dicks are very short and have small spines on them. You're welcome!

She was excellent in The Verdict, which is a very good movie.

Her tough, but sexually appealing look is shown off in 'The Verdict' a terrific movie. One of Paul Newman's best.

Marilyn Chambers became famous as a porn star in the 1970s because she acted like she was enjoying the sex, a novelty among porn actresses of her era, 50 years ago. Hollywood was attempting to mimic that behavior then, in its less pornographic films.

From a post yesterday:

""Those writers whose books have titles like “You Don’t Give a Fuck, Because You’re a Badass Self-Confident Woman Who Manifests Divine Bitch Energy: A Glow Up”"

"Divine Bitch Energy: A Glow Up"...checks out.

Rampling is in Broadchurch, Season 2, now streaming. I knew she looked familiar, and then it came to me.

"a different story played out behind the scenes."

No way!

Finally got around to watching "Vanishing Point" last summer. She has odd role in that which was cut out of US version.

I wonder where the gratuitous shower scene came from. Now either metoo has killed it or everybody's tired of tits.

The not passive or submissive genre is probably parasitic on the novelty of tits. Audiences lined up for I Am Curious Yellow, after all. That's a huge amount of art to sit through.

When an article starts out that way, it's usually an obituary.

If Celebrity Death Match were still on the air, Rampling would be duking it out with Helen Mirren for the same ecological niche (with Jane Birkin an also ran who got knocked out in an earlier round).

My most vivid images of Rampling are of her role in Georgie Girl. And I had a feeling she wasn't really acting.

What other kind of roles could Rampling play, with that face and those eyes?
Michelle Gomez has asked the same question about herself.

She has a creepy, unsettling, enigmatic half-smile that makes one wonder what's going on in her head and if there's something wrong up there. It goes well with some of the roles she plays.

The Night Porter probably hasn't aged well. Same thing for Seven Beauties, the Italian film of the same era with a similar Nazis + Sex recipe. The Seventies may have been a Golden or Silver Age for American film but a lot of the foreign stuff we were told to admire (Wertmuller, Fassbinder) wasn't very good.

Stone: All she had been told was, “We can’t see anything—I just need you to remove your panties

This is hard to believe after trading on it for 20+ years, especially since (1) the scene described is not the only nudity and (2) she didn't raise a stink at the time over what would have been a monumental betrayal. It's hard to believe she couldn't have forced a change if she desired. The publicity alone would drive it even if she had no legal recourse (which I doubt).

I suppose she'd say doing so would have cost her roles in the future, but that's a choice. If you're willing to trade this for fame and money don't bitch about your decision after you achieved your goal in trade. You're not the victim - that's the former actress who went home to Iowa because she wouldn't agree and has worked in a diner ever since.

I couldn't find the point at which nudity became generally negotiated in contracts but it is now and has been for quite a while. That's an improvement.

Doesn't matter how impressive she is or how well the article is written, someone here is going to say something horrible about her.

My second wife said that Sharon Stone wasn’t pretty. That is when I learned that I must be a poor judge of male beauty.

rcocean said...

I can't remember who she is. was she the actress who starred with woody allen, or the one who made Marathon man?

Dustin Hoffman's character was so dumb in that movie. Hey, you're a short guy with a big nose and this beautiful German chick is helping you out. Don't think its love. Wouldn't trust her, babe.

Beautiful actresses could get better roles if they would just write them.

Hate to bust your bubble, but most non-porn film nudity these days is CGI.

Odd. I pointed out in the Sharon Stone post a few days ago that Stone is in Stardust Memories' opening scene.

Rampling was also in Basic Instinct II, though I never saw the movie.

When she pops up, I recognize her instantly. My memory of her stems from Orca in 1977, the Jaws ripoff. The things I have seen her in most recently was a season of "Broadchurch" and the last season of "Dexter".

Joe Smith “ Even gay men wanted to fuck Sharon Stone, she was that pretty : )”

I know, right? She was astonishingly pretty, just intoxicating. My current and her daughters don’t think Robin Tunney is pretty.
I confess though I don’t see John Hamm as that good looking either.

William said...

If you wanted someone to look aloof and disdainful on a Dylan album photo, Charlotte Ramping would be the better choice. I'd much rather see Sharon Stone in a shower scene, however.....If I thought Charlotte Rampling was plotting to murder me, I would move out. With Sharon Stone, I would see what we could work out with marriage counselling.

Joe Smith said...

"My current and her daughters don’t think Robin Tunney is pretty."

Had to look up Tunney. Weird lips but cute enough.

Hamm is one of those guys (especially his character in 'Mad Men') who is toxically masculine. The guy's got a one o'clock shadow for God's sake.

Apparently Hamm is also known for another male attribute.

I'll leave it to you to Google 'Hammaconda': )

I've noticed a disturbing phenomenon in current movies. Sometimes, there's a warning that the movie contains nudity. The promised nudity turns out to be some guy's backside. You're lucky to find even a side boob shot of the female star. The metoo movement, at least with what goes on in front of the camera, has won a complete victory.

When I was Chair of the Young Republicans I would do a "Zardoz" screening during the Democrats' annual Jefferson Day celebration. What the fuck was Connery thinking.

The best movie where sex and nudity really matered was "Body heat" with a young Kathleen Turner.

As I've said before, the more famous the actress, the less likely it is you'll see her tits.

Exceptions are a younger version of said naked actress when they're starting out (not a bad consolation) or Euro actresses who strip at the drop of a hat.

Or just good old fashioned body doubles...

My favorite nude scene was Oliver Reed in the wrestling scene with Alan Bates in the uncut version of Women in Love. Woo-woo!

Rampling has that circles under the eyes thing, same as Judy Davis. Seems to go with a certain world-weariness that can be very appealing to men who've been around the block. As the Music Man sings, "the sadder but wiser girl for me."

I mostly remember Rampling from "Spy Game" in a scene with Robert Redford, dangling some 22-year-old on his arm, and with a single glance Rampling effortlessly out-sex-appeals the 22-year-old by a solid 2-3x. It's a remarkable thing to witness.

Amen.

I snarl, I hiss: How can ignorance be compared to bliss?
I spark, I fizz for the lady who knows what time it is
I cheer, I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me

I flinch, I shy, when the lass with the delicate air goes by
I smile, I grin, when the gal with a touch of sin walks in
I hope, and I pray, for a Hester to win just one more "A"
The sadder-but-wiser girl's the girl for me
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me
