"Why Did Princess Diana’s Hair Look Like That?"
The new news of Harry's ascension to some bogus position in a start up (BetterUp) had less meaning to me than the old non-news of Diana's hair!
“This was pre-tabloid culture. Ordinary people didn’t know about Sloanes,” says [journalist Peter] York, explaining how an Über-bougie cult of overprivileged L.L.Bean worshippers could exist in near-complete segregation from the masses. That all changed overnight as the press started to gather outside Diana’s flat, and suddenly Sloane style was seen “galloping down high street.” It’s ironic, York adds, because if Diana had just moved to the country with a low-key aristocrat like most Sloanes, she would have adopted a Sloane-mum hairstyle — longer and pushed back with a velvet hairband. Instead, she married a prince, and her look — as common as a brass-buttoned blazer in her peer group — became a totally singular statement.
That is more interesting than Harry the Newly Minted Start-up Bro.

One of the secrets to powerful click bait is answering a question you didn't even realize you had. It's insidious. Diana's hair is probably the first thing that most people picture in there heads, even before here face, when they think about Princess Diana.
Poor Maggie T got endless abuse for her helmet hair, while Di's gravity-defying locks were adored and copied. Somehow, hers rarely looked stiff and varnished.
Let's talk about Gavin Newsom's hair; it's his most wonderful trait.
Should I use the stimulus to get my hair streaked?
You know princess diana didnt leave that much of an impression as compared to the dutchess of devonshire she was very bland

Gotta love Harry's do-nothing job.
Kind of like being a royal all over again.
Did he consult with Michelle O. to get it?
As for Diana's hair, it seems to me that it was a bit of a Dorothy Hamill look.
Of course, it depends upon the time frame.
Does anyone else see it?
More women should go with the timeless look of the stylish and classy "Pete Rose."
I instantly thought about Hunter Biden at Burisma after reading about Prince Harry and his start-up. Influence without responsibility.
Harry should get a job advertising for fragrances by Matchabelli
Prince Harry is "pivoting" according to the article, pivot, pivot, pivoting. He seems to be doing as well as David Hogg in starting up a business in America. He should talk to Hunter who understands how to sell himself to likely investors. Ten to one, Harry makes a break before the year is over, fleeing by night to the British zone in the Caribbean. There he could live well. Yes, everyone wants to travel so Harry could make a fortune from resort owners by where's waldoing in the beach crowds on the better British islands. "I saw Harry on St. Kitts." "Harry bought me a drink but if I reveal where The Markle's minions might catch The Fugitive Prince." "Well, I rowed Harry all night long over the sea to Bimini to escape The Markle's dragooning." They seek him here; they seek him there; The Markle seeks him everywhere.
Good call on the Diana article. I didn't know any of this.
"Something made me click on "Prince Harry Is a Newly Minted Start-up Bro" at The Cut."
Because you have a Y chromosome deficiency.
I'm still trying to parse that whole Bean's phrase. Are they saying that Di was a preppie? And she was! I never thought of it that way.
Because you have a Y chromosome deficiency.

Heh.
Also, when did the comments here turn into the Rag On Althouse site? A potshot at our hostess is to be expected now and then, but every day and pretty much every post? We've become boring and predictable.

Also known as 'the Moe.'
h/t Bobby Slayton.
If we live in a universe with a loving God, Meghan will end up doing commercials while Harry sells cars for a dealership in Encino.
World War Hair
Something made me click...
Score: them +1, Althouse 0.
I misread it as needy. Like husband, like wife.

All foreign language to me.
“Something made me click on etc etc.
Why?
When women were women the hair style was the best part of the package. Too bad it was all a social construct making mere humans into attractive women. And blondes really did have more fun.
Here's why you clicked on Diana.
Diana's Death Resonates With Women in Therapy, NYT, Jane Gross, 1997
Not interested in either.
"Sloane Rangers" were the British preppies. BCBG were the French preppies.
The Eighties preppy crazy signaled the last gasp of the old preppiedom. Even then, you didn't have to be a WASP social register blueblood to be a preppy, but you didn't have to be quite as power-hungry, money-hungry or woke as today's preppies are. The old preppies did believe they were better than the rest of us, but they knew they weren't necessarily smarter. The new ones think they got where they are on their own because of their intellectual superiority.
If you have a different topic, go back to the last Café. Or wait till the next one.
I delete off topic stuff. If there’s a big news story I’m not blogging, that’s my choice and it’s for a good reason.
that’s my choice and it’s for a good reason.
Some reason anyway.
Better Up? Sheesh.
"I instantly thought about Hunter Biden at Burisma after reading about Prince Harry and his start-up. Influence without responsibility."
Pretty much the definition of "figurehead", no?
The word/name "Sloan"/"Sloane" is something that I always hear in a "that's a drag" tone, which is well-approximated by imagining Fran Drescher speaking about something that bores her to death.
Harry probably would have been better off to stay in the Army.
Who gives a Flying F about those two.
Harry probably would have been better off to stay in the Army.
If he wasn't royalty, Harry would have done his twenty in the Army and then started up a YouTube channel where he did extreme outdoor stunts.
"'Ello! It's your old buddy, 'Arry! Today myself and these three lovely birds- " *pans camera over three giggling strippers* "- are going to skydive naked into the Amazon jungle, build a temporary camp using nothing but a hatchet and shoelaces, get absolutely ripped on psychadaelic mushrooms and ayahuesca, hold an orgy, and then sail out in a dugout canoe. As always, remember to like and subscribe for my latest videos!"
I do believe women express themselves through their hairstyles, if they feel otherwise I able to.
But what are they saying?
With me it was messy hair, messy life.
Actually the 80s "preppy" style was just a resurgence of the old "Ivy League" style, which stopped being mainstream in 1968. I guess in reality "preppy" is how prep school kids dress and adults dress on the wekends. It's how I've been dressing since I was 12, still do. I'm Althouse's age. I was always offended by the term "preppy" in the 80's. I grew up calling it collegiate or ivy.

WTF did I just read?
It seems to me we - the US - fought a war with some country in Europe so that we did not have to have a monarchy and a bunch of royals to contend with. I seem to think we won this war.
So could all of you royal worshiping folks please pack your belongings and remove yourselves from the US and hightail it back to that country in Europe we won the war against? You can do all of your royal worshiping there in company with folks like yourselves. Thank you and have a nice trip. Please do not return.
So is princess Di like her portrayal on The Crown, or the poor girl abused by the rest of the royals as some media portray her? Does Meghan let Harry see his testicles, now that she keeps them bagged in her purse? How soon does she decide she has taken the poor ginger twit for everything she can and moves on?
Will the fox be back tomorrow?
Prince Harry: "I intend to help create impact in people’s lives".
Don't forget "Awareness". It's important!
Fact check: A proper Brit wouldn't be caught dead in Maine Hunting Shoes or L.L. Bean apparel.
Hunter Boots, yes...
Can we sacrifice Harry and Meghan to that volcano erupting on the Reykjanes Peninsula? Maybe that would shut down the volcano. Probably not, as it would spit them back up as indigestible organic matter.
"That is more interesting"
True. But then, for women, nothing is more interesting than hair and hairstyles.
Is that a feminist statement, correctly recognizing the special interests of women as special, or a sexist statement, assuming that women take a special interest in something trivial?
"Meghan, I just got a new job"
"That's great because you're never gonna that other kind of job from me"
"As for Diana's hair, it seems to me that it was a bit of a Dorothy Hamill look."
That's what I thought. Diana was 15 during the 1976 Olympics.
I always root for the red-headed stepchild.
"Über-bougie cult of overprivileged L.L.Bean worshippers ... "
L L Bean has a store in the UK?
Who knew?
(Actually, they don't.)
Re: James Graham:

I guess maybe the author meant Barbour? A bit pricier than LL Bean, but Diana's family were very rich.
But I'm a bit surprised. I know they have stores in Japan, but it looks like it may just be US, Canada, and Japan.
rehajm: "Hunter Boots, yes..."
Auto-Lefty Declares: "Hunter Boots" is a Putin disinformation plot!!!!......
.....what's that?
Oh.
Never mind.

Why are so many people, including but not only, Ann, trying to make us care about these Hewitts?
Let them rot in obscurity.
How can we miss them if they won't go away?

assuming that women take a special interest in something trivial
She appreciates it. He appreciates it. We appreciate it. It is undeniable that the female sex is the peacock of humanity, with the wonderful plumage.
"Fact check: A proper Brit wouldn't be caught dead in Maine Hunting Shoes or L.L. Bean apparel."
There are stores in UK that sell "preppy" clothing, been around long before the 1980s. Remember most of the wool and leather goods in Ivy men's stores were from Britain, Ireland, Scotland. The Ivy look is basically Americanized English clothing. The most iconic Ivy item is the button collar shirt, yes English.
A proper Brit would wear Wellingtons not Maine Hunting Shoes.
I love this part of the quote:

LOL – I guess he never had his own copy of “The Official Preppy Handbook”.
