UPDATE: Gaetz went on Tucker Carlson's show last night and made some elaborate counter-allegations. I found this hard to follow. He accuses the NYT of interfering with something. The word "extortion" comes up a lot, and after he leaves, Carlson — perhaps wanting to distance himself from the factual assertions — calls it "weird."
UPDATE 2: I received a press release from Gaetz in my email. It says:
"Over the past several weeks, my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter and my father has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals. The planted leak to the New York Times tonight was intended to thwart that investigation. No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation. I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations."
On Carlson's show, he named the man he was accusing of an extortion scheme.

In my day most law students learned the old Mann Act as a problem in statutory interpretation that made it amenable to prosecutorial abuse. But the statute was subsequently narrowed, so if Gaetz was being investigated by Barr's DOJ it must have been under something else.
Well, Gaetz' tweet about the story is as unambiguous as it could possibly be, so I would probably lean to the side that he is the one telling the truth here rather than the NYTimes' once again anonymous sources. If Gaetz' is lying about that, then he is finished politically- that is the kind of risk a politician wouldn't usually take.
I will say this- if Gaetz and his father didn't keep their own copies of the undercover recordings, then they aren't very bright given the FBI's ethics.

I certainly can't say if the rumor is true or not, but I never really trusted Gaetz. He was too much the Daddy's Boy, the son of somebody with pull in the party who fixed his DUIs and gave him his start in politics. To tell the truth I don't know if the DUI and paternal intervention stories are true either, but the guy did not give off a good vibe. The latest story may well turn out to be fake, but still, it's wise to not trust the guy too much.

Well actually, it is “clickbait” for everyone, including apparently Althouse who chose to blog the story.
For someone like me, a Matt Gaetz sex scandal is not merely “clickbait,” but is “catnip.” Something so delightfully intoxicating that we are nearly delirious with pleasure.
My takeaway from meeting with conservatives in that district was that there wasn’t much love lost for father or son, and this sounds like dad’s mess, but as long as they voted right and didn’t outright steal, that was the most one could expect from a political critter.
