We know that democracy is dangerous and unstable. We were deliberately designed as a republic to constrain democracy. I'm starting to believe that a republic isn't strong enough. (at least not one with women's suffrage) A constitutional monarchy has its own problems (although a ruling oligarchy isn't one of them. We have one of those too, we just pretend we don't) witness the United Kingdom's problems with democratic impulses.

Where are all of the philosopher kings when we need them?

We don't need no stinkin' Congress. Streamline the government. President signs executive order, Supreme Court gives thumbs up or thumbs down same day. Cut out the middle men.

Maine moved to age based cutoffs for Covid vaccinations. Moving to 60+ on Wednesday. Mrs. stevew and I will be eligible at that point. We pre-registered today. Why not.

A long time and close friend died over the weekend. Just 54 years old. Heart attack. I've known him for 25+ years. Started as work colleagues, became good friends. He was a drummer, coaxed and cajoled me into playing with him band. Wouldn't have happened without him. We talked regularly, hadn't seen him in about 10 months because of government restrictions. Going to miss him, he was a great and reliable friend. His family will miss him more. Not sure what the government will allow by way of a funeral. Sigh.

CPAC's lawyer is blaming Hyatt Hotels for failing to exercise its "oversight role" in erecting a stage shaped like a Nazi symbol that a CPAC subcontractor designed. CPAC must have consulted with Donald Trump to dream up this defense. The lawyer even roped in the supposed outrage of Jews associated with CPAC, when in fact he likely talked to few if any of them. Everybody knows CPAC is dedicated to fight against antisemitism (except when it doesn't) - but enthusiastically permits repeated and deliberate lies that Donald Trump won the November 4 presidential election.

Lots of people here have been enjoying how Cuomo has gotten tagged as the sexist thug he undoubtedly is. All true, with the proviso that he’s mostly just an all-around thug, with fear and intimidation being his approach to pretty much everyone. The unfortunate reality is that NY is a one-party state, and he is the least crazy lefty wacko in Albany, making him what passes for the voice of sanity on issues like taxes, business regulation, etc in NY state government. Still, good riddance, even knowing that what will come after him will be worse in many ways.

FullMoon said...

And, if the sub knew that was a Nazi symbol, that is an admirable practical joke on the CPAC

This doesn't make any sense if you are a candidate that just won a legitimate election. There is no upside for the Biden administration here if they actually want to win future elections.

This is just not how a legitimate administration would act.

They stole the election.

The blue states destroyed themselves. Particularly the blue cities like New York San Francisco Seattle etc.

They will need massive bailouts from the federal government.

That will not even stop the bleeding.

Nobody likes what these people did or are doing.

Cuomo is also not in the Obama power block.

Cuomo's scalp will be sold to buy time for the Regime and solidify Kamala as the heir apparent.

Joe Biden will not be president by the end of the year 3 sigma. He has not given the State of the Union for a reason. His "What am I doing here?" bleep in Texas signals a catastrophic decline in his cognitive ability. Better than 50% he is out by July.

This is all falling apart for the Democrats. Kamala is worse than a mediocrity. She wont be able to hold it together.

My Dear. Dearheart. Lady Professor. Professora? You might want to go back and examine your Sandra Lee post, specifically the comments section made therein. The vitriol expressed towards Ms. Lee, someone who's only goal was to inform and entertain, is rather off-the-charts.

The fact that Sandra Lee wound up with Cancer and then was dumped by her erstwhile non-Fiance (Cuomo), which now serves as fodder and cause for your delight, and a thinly-disguised feeling that she-got-what-she-deserved........ all for the sin of using "processed foods" in her recipes --------seems rather harsh and unnecessarily cruel.

Contrast Sandra Lee with Linda McCartney. "Linda McCartney's Home Cooking, published in 1989" Linda McCartney was a vegan who never used anything processed in her recipes....From Wiki: "McCartney's band used recipes from the cookbook for the exclusively-vegetarian catered tour, labelled "rock's first veggie tour", in 1989."

And look what happened: McCartney wound up with cancer and died young. So, did McCartney get-what-she-deserved, as you seem to insinuate with Sandra Lee ?

There has been a long tradition of wacky, outrageous cooking shows. People laughed at Julia Child, I thought Child was comedy, not cooking. Watching Martha Stewart tie ribbons and bows on the back of dining chairs seemed awfully pretentious to me. Sandra Lee always seemed rather down-to-earth compared to Child and Stewart. And, I gave her a lot of credit for ingenuity and practicality, two qualities I would have thought the Althouse Blog would herald.

The fact that someone could grow up in such hard-boiled, hard-scrabble circumstances with no advantages whatsoever, no trust fund, no silver spoon, and achieve a certain level of success, completely self-made.....we just don't see much of that these days.

And, you're ready to trash her because your absolutely certain that non-processed foods are some sort of panacea and guarantee you a long-life. You know, I hope that's true---really. But again, it didn't work out so well for Linda McCartney.

The last I haven't gotten to yet, but for the remainder, they are quality, thought provoking works. That Bezos thinks he is entitled to make those judgments for me identifies him as a tyrant of the very first stripe.

Here in WA state, there is only one school district that has not implemented some form of in-school education. At a minimum, school districts are beginning with 1/2 day kindergarten or 2nd grade (old enough to blow their noses!). Some schools (mostly in red districts "east" [of the mountains} have had some classroom teaching since September and they have slowly ramped up. Many districts took surveys of parents and teachers.

The one holdout? Northshore (north of Lake Washington - very upper middle class white folks; Woodinville, Bothell). No surveys taken (they know that parents want their kids back in the classroom). Website pretends that they are "getting ready" to "turn the corner". And one of the required items to "turn the corner"? Vaccination for all teachers, administrators, staff. Lower wage essential workers have been supporting the community at grocery stores, nursery homes, Home Depot, etc. etc. and they won't get vaccinated for several months. But Northshore School District teachers - special. They haven't won the battle yet (for once, our state is actually turning a blind eye to healthy 30 year old teachers and focusing on the elderly - especially BIPOC elderly - for getting vaccinated.

Lots of Republican are actually Democrats. See Liz Chaney, and Niki Haley.
