"Strange branding. I don't associate him with the feeling of getting a good night's sleep."

"Maybe some slogan playing on the idea of 'woke,' like 'Now, the woke can sleep.' Or 'How the woke sleep.'"

In the photo NBC chose to illustrate its news flash, Hogg looks sleep deprived:

Why would anyone want political meaning in their pillow? Have you ever used politics to try to fall asleep? There's a reason the cliché falling-asleep method is counting sheep — not counting Senators. Though Senators are dull. But they not dull in the right way.

ADDED: We're told that Hogg's company will sell pillows that are "American-made by union workers," and I see at least one commenter mocking him as stupid — "Can you imagine the cost of a unionized pillow?" That made me think of the old "Look for the union label" ad campaign, which urged Americans to buy American-made clothing and to feel good about paying the extra cost. I rewatched those commercials, and they might make you laugh, but they actually made me cry, and I was trying not to cry.

Hahaha. If the goals of your pillow manufacturing and distribution company are not tightly focused on superior pillow manufacturing and distribution then your business will fail. Once you successfully establish this pillow business, i.e.; win customers and produce a profit, then you can use some of that profit to support causes important to you, but only some.

Note too that this kid's bedwetting behavior has only gotten worse. @donald has it right.

Imagine going to Harvard and coming out of it thinking that your life's goal is to put the My Pillow guy out of business. Hogg will be out of business in a year. There are serious mattress and pillow companies out there now. Already woke. Already doing business. With actual business experience, track records, and marketing. And they're not run by insufferable assholes.

What's Hogg going to do? Accuse Mike Lindell of being too Christian? Good luck with that.

Lindell does seem a bit...on the edge, shall we say? He could use a good 6 months turning off the news. But I will say this: I have trouble sleeping. That's another story entirely. But I did have a dead, awful pillow for years. I saw the My Pillow ads for years, but always ignored them. I turn off all ads. I shopped the market, buying every 'specialty' pillow and various off the shelf pillows for years. None of them worked for me. Then...out of frustration late one night I ordered a My Pillow. Best pillow I've ever had. I love it.

So...it's one thing to attack Mike Lindell, but the fact is, he has a product that works, a line that people love, and I now understand why. David Hogg is considered a regurgitive punk. Nothing more.

I remember seeing these commercials at the time and so I have old emotions and memories attached to them. I'm not sure what part of that affected me so much. The differentness of the hair and clothing styles made the characters feel tragic to me, and they had such simple satisfaction with their jobs and were making a simple request of their fellow citizens. It was so sincere, and I knew their fate: we Americans would switch to buying cheap clothes made overseas. The dedication to America would be nowhere to be found, except in a retro political campaign by a completely strange politician, whose supporters would be called deplorable by people who would not want to be identifying these people in the commercial as deplorable. But those people are lost in an irretrievable moment in the past -- a moment that lives on through YouTube and allows them to march and sing earnestly forever.

But all that poilitical bladerdash aside, I'd never buy a pillow made by Boss Hogg or his workers, whether union or not.

LA_Bob said...

"Something like that."

Good answer, and I agree with Francisco D nostalgia has much to do with it.

I remember those ads. The late 70's and early 80's were very turbulent economically. The Great Inflation raged on. Unemployment was rising (remember "stagflation"?), and unions were struggling to stay relevant in a time when they had lost their clout. It wasn't just the garment workers. There was a big campaign to "buy American" in the auto industry and elsewhere.

Those people in the ads were begging for their jobs and their lifestyles however humble they might have been. But charity was increasingly difficult for most middle-class Americans, unionized or not. Why shell out $2000 more for an American car to help save union jobs when you could buy a better, more reliable imported car and stretch your own threatened budget? If you could afford the extra bucks you'd have been better off donating the price difference to the unions after buying the better foreign car. Same with clothing, electronics, other stuff.

The 60's and 70's were times of great excess for Americans. The bubble was bursting in the late 70's, and bursting bubbles hurt people. It's sad, but it's a cautionary tale against complacency.

What I suspect will happen in short order:

The My Pillow company will very soon begin having extreme difficulty with their supply chain of materials sourced from outside CONUS. These materials will consistently be held up at ports of entry for all sorts of various reasons. Perhaps illicit contraband will suddenly start being "discovered" in many of the shipments.

This will trigger an expanded and continuous "audit" of the My Pillow company by multiple federal law enforcement agencies and the IRS.

This team will be led by the 2020's version of Andrew Weissman who will convert novel and creative interpretations of the law into prosecutions of the entire MyPillow corporate team (a la Arthur Anderson).
Our new Weissman will prosecute his case in Washington DC before a Judge Sullivan "judge" in front of a DC jury.

All defendants will be found guilty, put in prison, their wealth and homes forfeited, their families made destitute and My Pillow facilities shuttered.

David Hogg financial backers will pick up the idle My Pillow assets at pennies on the dollar, if not simply awarded to Hogg by state authorities.

Hogg's financial backers will then establish new supply chain and logistics relationships with ChiCom interests who will use their Belt and Road affiliates to create a new democratical pipeline for materials.

The company will make inferior products and the refusal of the market to embrace the new "products" will result in claims of MAGA-racism bigotry since the entire executive staff of Stasi-Pillow will be LGBTQ(more letters here) BIPOC's.

Meanwhile, 8 years after their convictions and imprisonment and harassment of their families, the My Pillow defendants will finally win on appeal at the Supreme Court and be released and given $50k in cash as a "settlement" for their "troubles".

Being without work hit him very, very hard. It's hard to convey to people who weren't around in the 70s just how dismal and hopeless the world seemed to be becoming. Jimmy Carter's "malaise" didn't even begin to describe it.

I'm 62 years old and I just learned what "pillow biter" means. I've led a sheltered life; thankfully my fainting couch is nearby.
I commend Mr. Hogg on his enthusiasm. I'd much rather he make an attempt, through market methods, to achieve his objective than through- for example- executive fiat. But when this effort fails, what then?

I have a "my pillow" and I do like it. I'm really picky with pillows.

I respect the My Pillow guy but no one in industry should wed themselves to any political candidate. Not wise.
The blow-back isn't worth it.

As for anything that creepy bully DAvid Hogg would produce (he wont'
produce anything - some rich leftist will do it for him) YUCk. No freaking way I'd buy a Hogg pillow.

I love that My Pillow is made in USA. it's washable - and not delicate. - you can really wash it and dry it full-on. It's a malleable pillow. You can punch it around and get it just right.

Hogg is an asshole.

"P.S. Look for the union label really didn't help Detroit, as they were putting out junker cars with poor quality. Although the campaign was probably more about Detroit than some other places. 1970's products were hideous."

I bought my first car in 1972. My dad was a mechanic and had always owned GM cars. His advice to me- "Buy a Japanese car. US made cars are crap."

The last two vehicles he owned before he died were Toyotas. I'm sure there's a message in there somewhere.

My guess is he will find that his goals of supporting progressive causes and hiring ex-cons will not further his competitiveness, but I applaud his attempt to try a market solution to his perceived problem.

I agree in principle but the reality is any/all left wing businesses proudly wear their left wing/progressive bona fides on their sleeve with near impunity. It is only right wing or conservative businesses that get crucified.

Look at what happened to the Kock brothers. They donated to causes across the political spectrum but as soon as word of one or two of the right-wing (and I think they were actually libertarian) causes they support got out, they became worse than Nazis. Look at Chik-fil-a and all that they put up with to maintain their values.

So apparently it is quite alright for progressives to push their positions but everyone else can just shut the hell up.

Just as with entertainment, I want the businesses I frequent to "shut up and sing" and leave the politics out of it. I will boycott businesses that push politics I don't agree with. I know it is not much but they no longer get my money. I also have a long memory. I stopped purchasing any/all Gillette products due to their bone-headed ad move. Stopped watching sports, stopped viewing most Hollywood movies. They likely don't care but I can no longer give support (money or otherwise) to groups that hate me and work against my [and the country's] interests. I also no longer do twitter, facebook, nor Google. Left them years ago.

A business' job is business. Leave the causes to people. If you have enough "profit" to give away money, you are charging too much.

stick to your principles.

I think Bagoh recommended the My Pillow a while back.

I bought it because I was actually wanting a better pillow.

Regarding union-made goods and the nostalgia of commercials urging patriotic Americans to support their follow American workers, things have been blurred since those ads were made, at least w/r/t cars. My last three cars are Subaru, Honda, Honda, made in Lafayette, Indiana, Ohio, and Alabama, respectively.

When I heard his announcement, I assumed that it was actually like the book deals and speaking fees in the progressive community. Money will be funneled his way, but there is no expectation of him being successful at the business.

Me too. Success guaranteed by big hotel and motel chains ordering in quantity. If the guy had any real business sense, he would join with Biden administration in creating a way to unionize prisoners, pay fifty cents an hour, and manufacture on prison grounds.

"Hogg's moving into a crowded...market with a product that won't appeal to anyone who isn't politicized"

Yep. Hogg doesn't seem to realize that MyPillow won't be his main competitor. People turned off by Lindell already don't buy MyPillow; people who like MyPillow aren't going to shop HoggSleep. Leftists who want a political pillow already buy theirs from OneFreshPillow.

What would be funny is if any of his formerly-incarcerated employees turn out to be beneficiaries of Trump's reforms.

Someday Hogg will show up as a guest on a fourth tier cable channel program hosted by Tater Stelter called “Where are they now?”

"When I heard his announcement, I assumed that it was actually like the book deals and speaking fees in the progressive community."

Bringing up book deals, the media conglomerate CBS-Viacom wanted to sell the dead-tree media (paper-book publishing) arm *Simon+Schuster* to another struggling dead-tree publisher *Penguin* (also and formerly known as *RandomHouse*. This put them into the tender hands of the Dept of Justice for review for anti-trust monopoly practices.

BUT, in January, just before the inauguration, Simon and Schuster announced the President's Son would be getting a VERY GENEROUS advance on a new book. This despite the fact that Junior has never before written a book. Or that the book under contract hadn't yet been written. On the face of it, it looked very much like a quid pro quo to pay Junior to beg Dad to lean on the DoJ to approve the rescue merger deal for the endangered dead tree business.

I just about guarantee, if this entirely true story had been about DON instead of HUNTER the news coverage would be entirely different.

They want to smother Lindell..like, with a pillow.

But yes, give the boy credit for bouncing back.
His hair-brained venture into fitness products really fell flat.
I have caught St. Vinnies clerks trying to smuggle his .75lb dumbbells into my purchase.
