This has an excellent healing quality: "Biden to nominate Merrick Garland as attorney general."

CNN reports.

MEANWHILE: From Politico: "The results of the Georgia Senate runoffs aren’t yet final. But left-wing activists are already pressuring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to take advantage of a possible Democratic majority in the Senate and retire.... President-elect Joe Biden has committed to nominating a Black woman to the next open Justice seat... Bakari Sellers, a former South Carolina Representative who has been involved in several presidential campaigns, tweeted Tuesday night that if Senate Democrats win the majority 'I need Justice Breyer to announce retirement at 12:01pm on January 20th.'"

I wonder what Stacey Abrams thinks of this appointment. We don't really know the deal until Abrams weighs in.

That's not healing, that's spiking the football in the opponent's face.

Healing?? Wow. You guys have a strange way of healing the country.

Amy Coney Barrett healed the country too. Another woman on the Supreme Court....but oh...wrong political party so NO HEALING FOR US!!!

All of Biden’s picks seem to. be about show and signaling and not about getting things done. I guess that is good news.

Balfegor said...

He seems well qualified. He went from DOJ to private practice and back a couple times (the so-called "revolving door") as well as his service as a federal judge, so he covers all the bases. That said, he's a White man, making his nomination by a Democrat a bit surprising.

narciso said...

He'll be just a figurehead for the facehuggers that will staff the department

PB said...

Healing? The apparatchiks at the FBI and DOJ are going to roll him.

Joe Biden has committed to nominating a Black woman to whatever.

I commend him on his racism and sexism.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

healing? no. Nothing Biden does will heal. Joe Biden is corrupt and he got away with it. Therefore, there is no healing power in Joe. Ever.

However - Mr. Garland might be a welcome relief that Biden didn't pick corrupt Hillary.

Diversity (e.g. racism) and feminism (i.e. sexism) is inclusive and progressive: one step forward, two steps backward. Not quite the wicked solution, but close.

Too late for healing gestures. MUCH too late.

Sad. Healing. Look at your presumptions and assumptions, Ms. Althouse. No one was sick. No one suffered. This appointment is superficial to a wondrous degree. NYC Journo List has it right; it's not about anything real.

Well! A former state representative who has been involved in several presidential campaigns is definitely the right person to be instructing Supreme Court justices.

Whew. And here I had feared a Biden administration might work backasswards.

mccullough said...

So Dems hope to assuage the hard feelings from appointing a White Boy AG by lobbying Breyer to retire for a Black Woman Justice.

I'd have to be in a permanent post vegetative state in order to care any less about what Sellers wants than I do at this very moment.

Nope, no healing. None. Zip. Nada. We shall either live in a perpetual cold war or we shall die in a fiery one.

So Stacey wants the robe and the gavel, not the star.

I like the pick. Between Doug Jones, Garland, and Sally Yates, Garland was my favorite. A combination of freshness and respectability for a Justice Department in need of both.

An AG with few personal ties of any kind to the President. Different in that way from Eric Holder, Bobby Kennedy and Jeff Sessions; not. DoJ careerist like Holder, or Barr.

This is great for the nation.

daskol said...

Yes, this is great, let's have garlands for Garland.

Flat Tire said...

Could be a lot worse than Garland. I'll postpone my meltdown for Abrams SC nomination.

4 years of Nancy and Adam Schitt - Mueller and the left's non-stop lies and fraud? Add to that the left's brownshirt army of Antifa thugs - ignored and excused by the media.

healing?

No. No. NO.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

Chuck - you probably don't know 2 shits about Mr. Garland.

Do any of us know about him?

I suspect that while Garland is a step up from corrupt Hillary - he's a loyal leftist who will do his duty to support and cover for corruption from within.

Chuck, I agree with you that selecting AGs as hatchet men for a new POTUS is to be discouraged. We know how Bobby Kennedy waged a vendetta on the Kennedys' Mafia enemies.
And I honestly don't believe Biden [bless his heart] is out for any kind of vendetta. But the vendetta will come from other sources.

Ignorance is Bliss said...

He seems like as good as could be expected. But I don't see the healing. It is not some sort of olive branch to the Republicans, and it won't satisfy Democrats regarding the lost Supreme Court pick.

Justice Breyer should tell Bakari Sellers that nobody cares what he(?) thinks. Breyer serves for life, if he wants to.

Leland said...

They are setting bars low. Why stop at Breyer? Shouldn't all white Democrat men resign at 12:01pm January 20th? President Harris can nominate a black woman just as easily.

Eleanor said...

I'm sorry. Why would appointing someone the Republicans rejected be healing? You want to send out an olive branch to the Trumpsters? Pick Giuliani.

Of course not. That addled fuck is in his basement blowing bubbles.

HTF is that healing? Is he going to investigate Hunter Biden? Declassify all the FBI/DOJ bullshit they pulled in their attempted coup? LOL

Sarcasm is hard because really good sarcasm seems so real to those not prepared to see it for what it is.

Eleanor said...

Gowdy would work, too.

In his condition, he shouldn't be blowing anybody. Get Kamala in there, stat.

So, once again, Joe Biden has declared that he will hand a vital position to someone based on their checking off so many identity-politics boxes that, even in a nation of 340 million people, you can count one hand the number of people he might possibly be talking about?

Black women judges on US Courts of Appeals who have not retired or assumed senior status: Ojetta Thompson (1st Cir.); Judith Rogers (D.C. Cir., over 80 years old); Johnnie Rawlinson (9th Cir.); and Bernice Donald (6th Cir.). I'm guessing Judge Rogers is out due to her age, which leaves us with Judges Thompson, Rawlinson, and Donald. All three of them are in their late 60's.

One of Breyer's USSC clerks who sits on the DC District Court could be promoted to a Garland vacancy if he is confirmed AG. K.B. Jackson. I lost a case before her, but found her to be a terrific judge. If Breyer retired at the end of this term she would be an excellent replacement.

Greg said...

Are there any black trans women who might qualify? Nothing could describe now better than appointing a man to sit as the first black woman.

Sebastian said...

"This has an excellent healing quality: "Biden to nominate Merrick Garland as attorney general.""

Sure. Merrick the healer will get to the bottom of the Biden family corruption, prosecute hoaxers and rioters, and stop the cancer of progressivism.

Gahrie said...

It's a way of healing the Left from the trauma of the last four years by forcing the Republicans to eat a shit sandwich.

Skeptical Voter said...

Ah well Judge Garland gets the "Miss Congeniality" award, And what the heck if Breyer or Sotomoayor or Kagan shuffles off this mortal coil--or off the SCOTUS bench for some reason he could still be a late season replacement.

I shouldn't denigrate Judge Garland--he's undoubtedly far more competent in his new role than most of Biden's other Cabinet picks. Compare and contrst Garland with John Kerry.

Re: Gahrie:

I don't think the objection to Garland was that he was a hack or grossly unqualified as a justice. And he's about as reasonable a pick for Attorney General as Republicans could have hoped for, even if they had held both Georgia Senate seats. Biden's administration still gets to make the picks after all.

It's not a very deep pool. What number of current Federal judges are Black women? There are 47. There are five Black women judges out of 179 currently confirmed to the federal circuit courts of appeal, where 12 of the last 13 Supreme Court justices were drawn. And at the district level, there are only 42 Black women judges out of 673. Would any of us be surprised if Biden nominated Anita Hill?

These affirmative action moves for black women always remind me of J'Tia from Survivor -- a PhD nuclear engineer who seemed to have an IQ of about 90 with some emotional problems thrown in. Apparently no advisor during her grad school days wanted to be the one to say she wasn't capable.

As it turns out, J'Tia works for the federal government. Not a surprise.
