"Cotton appeared to be referring to Hawley, his potential rival for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, whose campaign sent out a fundraising email Wednesday..."

"... promoting his plan to object to Pennsylvania’s electoral votes. The email was sent shortly before a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, bringing a temporary halt to the counting of the Electoral College vote and leaving offices and hallways in the Capitol ransacked."

The Hill says, commenting on this tweet from Tom Cotton (which says "while," not "shortly before"):

That goes for "Lindsey Graham 2.0" and so many others as well.

Controlled Opposition, all of them. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump himself were in on it at this point. There is nothing about this nation anymore, no institution, that has not been completely captured by the far Left. We The People are on our own and need to realize that we are the ones who have been declared enemies of the state, that not a single aspect of that state will protect us, that in fact the entirety of the "rule of law" has no purpose or function but to be used as weapons exclusively against us, and respond as formerly sovereign citizens are duty bound to do.

Several times I considered writing that I was not sure I trusted Cotton because of the aggressive self-promotion that kept his name in the news.

I'm sure now that I do not trust him and wish I had stated so earlier.

Tom Cotton once served the US in the military. Now he serves Tom Cotton.

So Cotton misleads about Hawley in a tweet criticizing Hawley misleading supporters about the ability of Senators to reject electoral votes.

It's shortly before or while depending on when you count the storming as starting:

(1) When the protesters forced entry into the Capitol building.
(2) When the protesters breached the security perimeter around the Capitol building.
(3) When the protesters left the Trump rally at the Ellipse and began marching across the Capitol city towards Capitol Hill.

Counter Democrats? With what? Senate investigation? Oops, you don't control the Senate, you have no say in its agenda? House investigation? Don't make me laugh. DOJ? Yeah, right, the DOJ to investigate their boss's shenanigans. Who do you think their boss is? A Republican?

They can pass any laws, any agenda with 50 votes + Harris, confirm any judges...

What can you do about it, Cotton? To gull the gullible Republicans to send your ilk back to office to "counter" the Democrats? Your credibility is gone, you can't get it back.

mccullough said...

The Senate GOP needs new leadership.

mccullough said...

Politically, Cotton is more astute than Hawley.

Cotton sensed that Trump was losing it and didn’t back Trump’s play. Hawley tried to thread the needle by objecting to electoral votes while saying he didn’t believe the election was stolen. Hawley just wanted to Raise Awareness.

Next up, courtesy of the Brookings Institute:

"In short, a Black person who can trace their heritage to people enslaved in U.S. states and territories should be eligible for financial compensation for slavery. Meanwhile, Black people who can show how they were excluded from various policies after emancipation should seek separate damages. For instance, a person like Senator Cory Booker whose parents are descendants of slaves would qualify for slavery reparations whereas Senator Kamala Harris (Jamaican immigrant father and Indian immigrant mother) and President Barack Obama (Kenyan immigrant father and white mother) may seek redress for housing and/or education segregation. Sasha and Malia Obama (whose mother is Michelle Robinson Obama, a descendant of enslaved Africans) would qualify."

Obama was redressed for housing; Harris will be shortly.

The GOP owes its continued existence to countering the Dem agenda.

The GOPs policies are terrible (open borders, endless wars, Wall Street bailouts). They were never going to repeal Obamacare. If they had enough votes, they could have blocked it in the first place.

With both bodies of Congress holding slim Dem majorities, they might be able to block some of the worst Dem legislation.

Biden will push as much through the administrative state as he can. The only ones who can block that are federal judges.

Biden will also not enforce the laws he doesn’t like and will enforce the laws he likes against those without power or his political opponents.

The GOP will continue to fundraise off the Latest Outrage.

Trump was better than Obama at not running afoul of the APA.

The Supreme Court is stacked against Biden.

The Dems will try and get rid of the filibuster. Their base demands it. They might succeed.

Cotton is a snake. Georgians didn't turn out because of Republicans like him, not as he claims because of the Republicans who were fighting for an honest audit of the votes.

But I'm sure the party establishment did all they can to entrench Cotton: Armed Services, Banking, Intelligence, and Joint Economic Committees.

He resembles a Republican version of Adam Schiff -- a physically repulsive liar.

About 10% fewer voters in the Georgia special election than the general election. Ossof got about 130,000 fewer votes than the general and Perdue got about 250,000 fewer votes than the general.

More of them voted for the Dem candidates.

What dissuaded some Dem voters from turning out in the special election?

rcocean said...

Cotton is dead to me. He betrayed Trump when he had the chance to fight for him.

The weak-kneed R's are always playing the "We can't do this - we won't win" game. The D's NEVER do this. Schumer never says: "What's the use? I don't have the votes". NEVER. People like Senator Cotton are always playing Failure theater. The goal is to do nothing for the average Republican voter or his issues, but pacify the Base by pretending to fight, or coming up with good excuses on why you didn't fight in the first place.

Cotton didn't want to support Trump - he's OK with Biden being President. That's the truth. He also has Bill Kristol's son as one of his key aides. Two good reasons not to vote for him. Not just as President, but as a Senator.

rcocean said...

Cotton folded. Cotton also shrinks when the heat is on.

Big Mike said...

@Sebastian, Cotton has begun his undeclared campaign by slamming a fellow Republican and implicitly giving a middle finger salute to Trump’s base. He has just dramatically reduced his chances of winning the primaries, and set his chances of winning the General to pretty close to zero.

There is nothing Cotton or anyone else could do to save Trump's presidency at this point. Trump blew it last year by failing to broaden his base when handed a golden opportunity -- the COVID crisis could have been a huge win for him if he'd handled it better. He also blew it by not fighting electoral fraud BEFORE the election. If you wait until after the election it's too late. There was never any chance that Trump was going to get any states electoral votes switched based on fraud allegations. His job was to win beyond the margin of fraud, and as the incumbent he should have been able to do it.

He failed.

Ken B said...

Cotton was also the only prominent western politician who was right on COVID early.

Ken B said...

That is exactly right. But Trump is a do nothing. He makes a lot of noise but almost never follows through. Kushner is maybe the only example of the atrump team with any follow through.
The Democrats were just awful on COVID. Pelosi at the Asian market and Biden slamming the travel ban. A competent president with follow through could have won easily.

The elbows are out. Politics ain't beanbag, and Tom Cotton ain't a guy who sits in the corner. Now that Trump is going to be vilified throughout history, much like Nixon was (in Nixon's case, deservedly so), his grip on the GOP is gone. People will be happy to see him getting smaller in the rearview mirror. Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Kristi Noem, and Ron DeSantis are the ones to watch the next four years.

FWIW, even though I was not happy Crooked Droopy Joe won, and called him out often, there is something dangerous in the cult of personality.

Might be a wee bit premature for that one. After all, there is no way he could be elected President. You may be correct, but are far too confident in your predictive abilities.

Might I suggest a reading of biographies of Teddy Roosevelt? Trump is very much like him, with the exception that some of the press covered Roosevelt fairly.

I don't think Trump's grip on the GOP is gone, but it's taken a major hit in the last two months, and especially in the last two days.

The party could fracture. I'll be surprised if Trump is the 2024 GOP nominee. I'd put it at less than 25%. Maybe the combined probability of Trump as GOP nominee + Trump running independent is 33%.

I'm pretty sure that in either case he would lose. TR lost when he ran as a Bull Moose.

I will agree that Trump is not a long term solution for the GOP, but I do believe that he has been in many ways a sort of shot in the arm they have needed for a while. He has shown them that the "Harumph, we must be gentlemen above all!" attitude is a non-starter when dealing with people who routinely riot and threaten violence to accomplish their political aims. In fact I will say that you might not have Cotton/Hawley/Cruz, et. al., if Trump hadn't been there advancing the idea that there is a time when you need to fight back.

NorthOfTheOneOhOne said...

And I will also say that for all his faults; he did save us from yet another of the Bush family and hopefully wrecked their dynastic plans.

To follow Cotton's advice and recommended approach is to consign oneself to forever be the party out of power. To give him and Graham and all the others that think like them the benefit of the doubt, they are committed to the rule of law, playing fair and square, and to openly competing for and winning the hearts and minds and votes of the voters. That's great unless your opponent isn't playing by the same rules, which they are not.
