"As he entered his first week in office, President Joe Biden was handed a priceless gift: the blissful sound of former President Donald Trump’s Twitter silence...."

"While Trump's absence from Twitter has been a gift to Biden early on, it also may end up benefiting the GOP.... 'Be careful what you wish for,' said Sam Nunberg, who served as a 2016 consultant on Trump’s campaign before being fired. Nunberg said of Biden and the crises facing the nation: 'All the focus is now on him and it hasn’t been on him. … He owns it now.'"

Does the critic not know he can ignore twitter? I never heard anything Trump said on twitter because I ignored it. Once in a while I'd see something in passing on the news or in a blog, but then skipped it by.

It's almost like people like the critic don't understand they control their media consumption. If you don't want to hear Trump on twitter, it used to be you could just ignore Trump on twitter.

Leland said...

I agree Michael K, but they usually hide it as fair editorial content, hidden by having a counter point, such as Megan McArdle or Bill Kristol. Now they eliminated that voice and Politico rightfully notes that as a gift. If the FBI can use news stories as evidence, so can any citizen. And if it is “priceless” thus no monetary value then isn’t that an emolument? If the King of Saud gave the President a priceless gift, the President couldn’t keep it because of the emolument clause.

Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you

But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls

And whispered in the sound of silence

CHINA ECONOMIC REVIEW
Biden administration delays Chinese military investment ban
on: January 28, 2021

The US Treasury has delayed the implementation of a ban on Americans investing in companies with suspected ties to the Chinese military, which had been imposed by Donald Trump after he lost the presidential election, reported the Financial Times.

Trump in November issued an executive order that prohibited Americans from investing in Chinese companies named on a Pentagon blacklist of groups that might threaten US security. The Trump administration set a January 28 deadline for the ban to take effect, but the Biden administration on Wednesday said it would extend the date to May 27.

The move comes as the Biden administration starts the process of reviewing actions that Trump last year took against China, including putting a number of Chinese companies on Pentagon and commerce department blacklists that either ban investments in those companies or make it harder to export technology to them, said the FT.

“It gives the new administration time to potentially clean up an action that created significant market confusion,” Daniel Tannebaum, a former Treasury official. “General licenses are a common method of tweaking sanctions programs after their implementation to manage against initial unanticipated consequences.”

-----------

Thanks to Joe there's still time to invest in Chinese military technology. How many members of Congress are doing that?

Sure. When Standard Oil had a virtual monopoly it was all perfectly legal and all abided by it’s "terms of service" too.

The whole point of fascism is that the state is governed by a partnership between the ruling party and private corporations whose direction is given by the ruling party.

But Twitter is just making a moral judgement....

No action is exempt from moral judgment; no activity can be stripped of the value which a moral purpose confers on all things. Therefore life, as conceived of by the Fascist, is serious, austere, and religious; all its manifestations are poised in a world sustained by moral forces and subject to moral responsibilities. - Benito Mussolini, The Doctrine of Fascism.

It sounds a lot like critical theory to me, which is just warmed over fascism. Mussolini despised England as a “nation of shopkeepers” because England sought only to survive by commerce and did not have a higher purpose as a nation.

Hmmm, sounds familiar

It is opposed to classical liberalism[free market economics] which arose as a reaction to absolutism and exhausted its historical function when the State became the expression of the conscience and will of the people. <<- [This would be now, as. we will read below] Liberalism denied the State in the name of the individual - Mussolini

President-elect Joe Biden’s “economic policy team has signaled that it will be the first administration ever to construct economic policy around issues like race, gender equality and climate change, rather than around traditional indicators like gross domestic product or deficit ratios,”

Arturo, imagine for a moment that the reason the private entity did the thing it did was because it was asked to do so and/or coordinated with sympathetic people in government. Imagine that this move was taken together with several other companies who together control something you might call the "public commons," and that they were all doing this because the newly elected regime wanted them to, but obviously couldn't do it themselves (1st amendment). So what you have is an end-run around a right endowed by our creator and meant to be secured by our govt, who instead worked with private sector service providers of the public commons to get their way.

Joe Biden says almost the exact same thing except he is explicit about the details of the “expression of the conscience and will of the people."

"President-elect Joe Biden’s “economic policy team has signaled that it will be the first administration ever to construct economic policy around issues like race, gender equality and climate change, rather than around traditional indicators like gross domestic product or deficit ratios,”

Critical theory is explicity fascist and would have a hard time disagreeing with much of what Mussolini said about the role of government and private industry and how they both must serve above all a moral purpose.

Arturo Ui may not know he is a fascist, but that’s because of the decades long campaign to change the definition of fascism to something the Mussolini and Hitler would not recognize. You can’t blame him fro his ignorance, he believes everything he reads in the media and does not have the historical knowledge to examine it critically.

When you contact your representatives and senators, just remind them that the Democrats stole the election and Joe is an usurper. Keep them roiled.

Standard Issue Lefty: "Joe, maybe it's time for a cold shower."

Would a naked swim in front of a female Secret Service agent suffice?

Oh for Ghu's sake! Censorship is always good for those in power.

It isn't good for the rest of us.

How many people did Biden kill yesterday due to his inability to do anything about Covid?? Where's CNN death clock?? Why did they take it down. Joe is killing a lot of people a day, and they don't care

I have noticed that the current occupant of the WH is not possessed of an inferiority complex that compels the need to crudely jam himself into every single second of every single American's media life. After the past 4 years, I'm cool with that.

You are cool with a man who has no idea where he is, signing things he has no idea what is in them....that will make the rest of us SERFS for the elite?? You need to pull your head out of the sand before you suffocate yourself. China loves people like you and Joe.

"The prevailing critical theory of the current iteration of the Republican Party is that Joe Biden leads an international cabal of child eating pedophiles who fake all of the nation's mass shootings for fun,”

Your cult style thought stopping clichĂ©s won’t work here, but it probably kept you from thinking about what I wrote, so it sort of worked, but I also notice that you had no real response to the fact that Joe Biden’s Twitter feed looks a lot like Mussolini’s might.

Apparently Rep. McCarthy pretended to sleep in his office during the murders, injuries and violence that occurred during the insurrection when his Qanon allies set out to kill Pelosi, Pence and AOC."
I don't know where this deep received knowledge comes from. But this is nearly word for word what the proggs at work are saying. Accepted uncritically from listeners like gadfly as todays truth. No matter that there was a different truth the day before. Confronted. They will walk away or try and change the subject.
Gadfly. Have you ever had a fucking opinion that some one else didn't put in your head? Something of your own?

That's because it clearly resembles Pol Pot's Instagram, and you have no response to that fact...DO YOU???

It's not as if anyone must read anything on Twitter. The problem, then, appears to have been the pain of just knowing that Trump was probably, yet again, saying something else via Twitter that someone, somewhere found disagreeable.

It's a variation on the Mencken-ism that Puritanism was "The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be having a good time."

Or in the contemporary dispensation, "your speech is hurtful and harmful and therefore you must be silenced" (even if I choose not to listen, but just because I know you may be saying something I don't think you should be able to say).

pacwest - "The young, indoctrinated through the educational system or social media will be the inheritors of The Republic."

Yes. It's always difficult for the outgoing generation to let go. I think about my Dad, born in '21, enjoying life during the depression, enjoying visiting Anzio, Italy during WWII. Building his home with his own hands, having 4 kids with a woman he loved, and then...the 60s/70s.

Move out of the way, old man. This is the Age of Aquarius!

I remember Viet Nam, coming home to 19% Mortgages, the Lesbian movement (called the Women's movement), creation of the US Dept of Education, Affirmative Action preference for women.

Move out of the way, old man.

There is no Republic. There's not even Democracy. We couldn't keep it.

It's a story told, over and over. We're in this world, and the sunsets and sunrises are magnificent.

We're not of this world, just here for awhile.

Silence is violence! (Well, it rhymes.)

Trump not tweeting is a gift to the Republican Party. They need to focus on the future, which is neither Trump or Never Trump. It's Someone Younger.

Joe Biden is the president. Our attention should be focused on what does with the office.
