"Who Will Be TIME's Person of the Year for 2020? See the Shortlist."

Time has 4 options and one contains what I had considered the top 2 options back before the shortlist was announced: "Frontline Health Care Workers and Dr. Anthony Fauci."

If both are 1 option, clearly, that's going to be it.

The other item on the shortlist that is plausible is "Movement for Racial Justice" ("In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, protesters took to the streets, demanding action to fight racial injustice at the hands of police and any entity that embodies systemic discrimination").

The other 2 options on the shortlist are Biden and Trump — not lumped together but separate. No. Way.

UPDATE: How perfectly annoying! Time did not pick one of the 4 options on the list it suckered me into blogging about. It picked Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This was the option as presented yesterday:

It should go to BLM/Antifa Democrat Brownshirts or vote counters in the contested states. If they are the same people, either will suffice.

The person of the year should be the Billionaire Class. Its members have made a killing off the pandemic and for them, life couldn’t be better. Plus with everyone obsessing about the election, they are subjected to even less token scrutiny than usual.

I don't know, there is a tiny chance they would give it to Trump.

He's "safe" for them to like now. We'll soon move to the stage where he is compared to the next up and coming Republicans, and we'll be told that compared to them, he's William Pitt, Gladstone, Disraeli, and Metternich put together.

Well, they won't put it that way, because they don't know any history before Taylor Swift's first number one album. But they would want to put it that way, if they could.

At the same time the concept of "systemic discrimination" was introduced to the masses this summer, all dissent was declared verboten. The concept was introduced and declared above criticism simultaneously.

Not that it's a big deal. Just requires dismantling every area of government and culture.

Forget the election or COVID, THIS development will have the most far-reaching effect of anything that comes out of 2020.

> Biden and Trump — not lumped together but separate.

President Trump is objectively the "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives." You'd be hard pressed to find a newspaper article written on *any* subject (e.g., food, book reviews, etc.) that didn't reference Trump, directly or indirectly. IIRC, there was a even study that showed the NYT averaged one reference to Trump every 250 words(!).

But, of course, the same has been true for the last five years, so I'd doubt they'll select him now.

It should be the late George Floyd.

He was a convicted felon who - after allegedly committing a minor crime - died of a drug overdose. The drug overdose, however, was captured on video and appeared to be a homicide. That, in turn, caused riots all across the United States causing millions - if not billions - of dollars in property damage and more deaths. It also supercharged BLM, Inc. into a major political force with lots of money.

@Michael:

The Hillary communitarian speaks.

You can't possibly be this lame. First, I'm happy to have taught you a new word. Second, I have made this argument over and over. Socially conservative and fiscally liberal. Go left on welfare and warfare and go right on traditionalism and community. You can't combine social conservatism with economic libertarianism. The latter makes the former impossible. That's why the "moral majority" has been losing for 40 years. Communitarianism is skeptical of bigness. Big government, big business , big labor. Now, there are plenty of critiques to be made of the communitarian worldview, but calling it Clintonism isn't one of them.

@Joe Smith:

Anyone who says 'Trumpist' is a cult member, not a free-thinking individual.

Any freethinking individual can see that there are Trumpists. Just as there are Never Trumpers, there are Ever Trumpers. They are both political partisans driven by class resentments. The Never Trumpers by their loathing of deplorables, and the Ever Trumpers by their loathing of the elite cultural left (Hollywood, media, social justice activists). They are two sides of the same coin and consequently are only ever about half-right.

I haven't seen any scientists make any claims except the ones being thrown in jail or persecuted by the Chinese government.

And the people who have alternately claimed that it came from bats, pangolins, the US, or from India.

If it was actually able to infect bats or pangolins I would believe that it originated there. But a virus that came from bats that is unable to infect bats seems pretty unlikely.
