"Christ is king in this country. We don’t want illegal aliens from Mexico or outer space. So let’s tear this bitch down."

Says the man in the video that I found through Vice, which says "Mysterious Monolith Update: Racists Destroy California Monolith, Proclaim Christ Superior to Space Aliens/A group of men shouting 'Christ is King' and 'America First' destroyed a new monolith and replaced it with a wooden cross."

Notice that this was not the Utah monolith that we were talking about recently. It's a different monolith, in California. And I don't know how to tell whether these are real racists or pranksters. To my ear, the words I've quoted in the post title seem like a joke, and who would make such a joke... while tearing down a dumb sculpture in the desert?

Vice calls them "a group of right-wing young men."

In a video [no longer available] posted to a DLive account run by someone with the username CultureWarCrimnal [sic], the group of men claims to have driven for over 5 hours to get to the statue’s site.... [One man is v]aping while saying things like, “I will fuck you to death if you don’t sing.” The group goes on to sing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and other military-centric songs, all while greeting his viewers with vulgar, racist commentary.

Two other members in the back of the car have combat helmets on with night-vision goggles attached. Throughout the video they mentioning burning crosses and white power....The person with the camera claims someone is setting canines after them—no barking is heard. Shortly after, voices can be heard getting closer to the group. A person yells, “grab the cross and beat them with it.” CultureWarCriminal and his crew then have an impromptu roundtable discussion in the bushes, contemplating if those pursuing them are a part of the Antifa movement. “Antifa isn’t one to underestimate,” the group concludes.

Not underestimating Antifa, I will say that this whole group could be Antifa, performing a false flag operation. If so, they are at that point bragging about themselves.

They then devise a plan, seemingly getting excited using military vernacular, to call the police and frame those after them as the monolith destroyers.

If the destroyers are Antifa, which would mean that they had devised a plan to frame right-wing racists. But Vice links to a Twitter account called Culture War Criminal, so you can assess the ideology and the seriousness of it all for yourself.

I had the same reaction. Only an ideologue would think other ideologues are that ridiculous.

"Thank you Putin! Very awesome!"

Fake. Nobody on the right gives any thought to Putin. He's a left-wing obsession.

Racists? What's 'racist' about not wanting illegals in your country? My Mexican immigrant neighbors [the ones who are here legally] don't want them here, either. Are they racists? This particular aspersion has worn itself out and has no sting anymore. Sorry, mediaswine.

Here we have the principal problem with extremely distributed mass-media creation in a nutshell:

When you have sparse new information (e.g. randos claiming affiliation X participating in activity Y on an internet video), and no more "prior" information than a Twitter feed dating to February of this year, whatever conclusions you draw are going to be overwhelmingly based on your prior probabilities, and are also likely to reinforce those priors, even if the new information superficially contradicts them. This is the subject matter of Section 5.3, "Converging and diverging views," of Probability Theory: The Logic of Science, which our politicians had better master, like yesterday.

Big news! Three guys who may be “right wingers” push over a monolith!

Sorta balances out the looting, riots, destruction of cities and statues carried out by the “idea” of Antifa and other Democrat/leftist Brownshirts, doesn’t it?

Is there a noose in the background?

That would be definitive.

If rude Christians want to desecrate a heathen artifact, all it takes is a Sharpie pen to ink a crucifix onto the offensive item. I, for one, have changed Antifa "A" grafitti into a cross within a diamond. Go forth, and do likewise.

Reminds me of the Peter Gleick hoax. Megan McArdle had the same reaction: this is obviously the work of someone on the left, who imagines that far-right people match their cartoon picture of a villain.

So...are they racists against space aliens? What race ARE space aliens anyway?

Clearly a huge (and heavy-handed) prank. They did everything but wear 'I voted for Robert Byrd' lapel pins.

"In the video, a group of three men are seen pushing the statue over and chanting "America First" and "Christ is King." The men, one of whom was wearing a "Make America Great Again" headband, called part of the monolith's construction "gay" then replaced it monolith with a wooden cross."

My favorite is calling the object 'gay.' I think that's kind of a giveaway.

Do we add an "A" to the LGBQLMNOP% now?
Are they another "oppressed minority" to be pandered to?

...and please-- we dont owe these aliens reparations do we?

I say if the space aliens are willing to stand in line and go through the legal immigration process, I'm all for garnering more proud new American citizens.

Ann Landers used to blame prank letters on "Yale boys." Pretty sure they have guys like that on the West Coast.
