I recently finished "Warwulf" by Hermann Lons. Written in 1910 in German by Herman Lons. The story of a community in Saxony that bands together for protection against marauding armies, gypsies and others wh woul do them harm. Pretty good.

I believe in low taxes and people keeping what they work for, but with runaway deficits and with the rich more D and L than ever, I say raise taxes on the "rich". Maybe taxable income 400,000 or greater. I don't want more government programs. Let's reduce deficit and get "our fiscal house" in order.

Estate Taxes - While the money has already been taxed once, with deficits and rich more D and L than ever, why not.

Wealth tax - Why not something for billionaires. They are mostly D and L, and severe income inequality is a problem.

I am open to a national required service plan as Mickey Kaus describes.

Lastly, my favorite, additional taxes on media, sports, and entertainment because of their "corrosive" effect.

Love to hear your thoughts.
I think this is the avenue for Trumpism after Trump.

William said...: I watched a couple of versions of the trial scene in The Merchant of Venice. It's harrowing to watch. I think Shakespeare and the Elizabethans meant it as an example of justice leavened with Christian mercy. Hardly. Nowadays, it plays as an example of intolerance and bigoted manipulation of the law. It's painful to watch. Shylock finishes in a worse state than King Lear who at least is allowed the dignity of death. Shylock is left bereft of his family, his faith, and any shred of dignity.....In the Olivier version, Shylock slinks off stage and then there is heard a long wail. In the courtroom, a shadow passes over the face of Portia as she realizes that maybe justice and mercy were not quite served, despite her fine words. That's not "rich", that's high income. Some people who make $400m/yr accumulate and become "rich". Others spend it as fast as they can and wind up broke or in debt. Think pro athletes, entertainers for a visible example.

Others never make a lot of money but, because they save, become rich. Farmers, for example. Or Jeff Bezos.

And would raising taxes increase or decrease govt revenues? If increasing tax revenue is your goal, increasing tax rates has historically prevent to be counterproductive.

Why not? Perhaps because the Constitution forbids such a tax (Article 2, Section 9). I can see some pros and cons to a wealth tax but it would require a constitutional amendment. Think it would be possible to get one through?

The problem is not that the govt does not take enough from the taxpayer, the problem is that it spends so much more than it takes in.

Cut spending.

Lastly, my favorite, additional taxes on media, sports, and entertainment because of their "corrosive" effect.

How about we tax Trump supporters because of all the discord they caused? Or Biden supporters because BS Bad (BS=Biden Supporters. Or a special tax on Asians because they take all the good tech jobs. And so on.

I'll take a backseat to nobody in bad mouthing the press/media but I really don't want to start taxing people, groups based on not liking them.

While I think Texas' suit was legitimate, the problem is that the Republican Party controls the legislatures, both houses, in AZ, GA, MI, WI, and PA, and have done nothing to fight the absentee voting fraud in their own damned states. All they had to do was to order the state election boards and the governors to authenticate the damned signatures, and hold as the hammer an appointed slate of electors if the governors and Secretary of States refused to do this. This would have had the effect of negating all the electors from those 5 states, thus putting the election to the House. SCOTUS' main point with tonight's decision is basically this- "Why should we clean up this mess when those with the actual power to do so refuse to act?" I can't disagree with this reasoning. Look at Georgia's pathetic legislature- they are doing nothing to keep the Democrats from stealing the two Senate seats in a month's time, and at this point, the Democrats might not even have to cheat to win both seats. You'll start to get a good idea in a couple of months. Certainly by summer. Remember when Obama wanted to form brigades of young people to go out and enforce policies? I don’t self-identify as conservative, but most people would identify me that way and I am much more sympathetic to conservatives than liberals politically, so I’ll answer anyway: I support experiments with universal basic income.

I support it because I think that within 100 years automation will reach such an advanced state that there simply won’t be much need for human labor and we can’t all sell jewelry on Etsy. Sooner or later we will have no choice but to move beyond the model of work for pay and when we get there, we’ll be much better off if we have some experience with alternatives. I can imagine a months-long burst of consumption and socializing, in restaurants, bars, clubs, concerts, and museums.

But will some of the fears linger? I can also imagine a bit of hanging-back that causes a more gradual degree of the same changes the lockdowns forced upon us. Especially with a shortage of the fuel of capital that has come about with the lockdowns. Most people (other than Democrat civil servants on perpetual salary) have less money, less certain income, and more debt now than when this all began.

The restaurant world had reached a bad point, IMO, long before the coronavirus. Much too much mediocre food was being sold at exquisite prices. I was sick of spending large amounts of money for very little actual pleasure. I was already cutting back on those evenings; I doubt I am alone in that reaction. Fun thing to try. Make two lists. The first- all Blacks Democrats who have been elected to Congress in majority white districts, the second, all black Republicans who have been elected to Congress in majority white districts. The first list is a null set.

Fun thing to try. Make two lists. The first- all Blacks Democrats who have been elected to Congress in majority white districts, the second, all black Republicans who have been elected to Congress in majority white districts. The first list is a null set.

I didn't even have to use a search function. Instantly, I can name you one, and the person is still in Congress.

Gary Peters; current US Senator (D-MI). Previously, he was the U.S. House Representative from the Michigan 14th District. One of two majority-minority districts that comprise parts of Detroit and inner-ring suburbs. It is 58 percent or so black. Currently the district of Democrat (and African-American) Brenda Lawrence. Peters won the seat in 2012, and left after a term to run for the Senate seat that he won.

Incidentally; heavily-majority black Detroit has a white mayor, Mike Duggan. Who just announced a run for a third term. He will win in a landslide.; 12/12/20, 4:26 PM

Okay; Val Demings immediately came to mind (because I was hoping that she'd be Biden's Veep pick). Florida's 10th is only about 29% black; I just looked that number up.
