Not much book-talk recently (unless I've skipped too many threads) . . . I've finished the first part of Linda Colley's 2002 book "Captives," which looks at the British imperial system through the eyes of the people at the sharp end of (supposed, and temporary) Western superiority--the thousands and more snatched by North African pirates; hundreds by North American indigenes; large numbers again in India later on--she argues explicitly that Said's Orientalism thesis might apply in some degree to the very last phase, but that earlier narratives and the British response to defeat and captivity show sober acknowledgement of weakness and vulnerability, not arrogant Othering (especially in re
the Ottomans until very late).

Klemperer's first volume of the Third Reich, "I Will Bear Witness," is fascinating but too depressing for me to read much at a sitting. The knowledge of what comes after--I'm only into 1936--is excruciating, and that he managed to survive both Holocaust and the Dresden raid is amazing; his picture of the gleichschaltungs process echoes farcically in academic PC today.
