This has been the republican position all along, has it not?

How much of the voting public will even be aware of this before the election, considering the pro-Democratic nature of the media?

That's why stock market futures are up this morning. The ball is back in Pelosi's court.

This is no about face. DJT has always been up front about wanted a no-earmarks-added bill.

THEOLDMAN

Pelosi won't give in prior to the election. Or afterwards, since she'll lose the House and in a fit of pique, will refuse anything for The Greatest President in my Lifetime™

This is to help Nate get his head around what Trump is doing.

Pelosi is holding out for the great train robbery: A huge bailout of the fiscally irresponsible states like California, New York, and Illinois, by the fiscally responsible states.

Now this makes sense.

Typically if nothing gets done, it's a Democrat positive because they (the Dems) will tell the nation that Trump refused to help the American public 'in their time of need'. The press will back them and ask every Republican why they hate children.

So I don't know if it's in Nancy's best interest to do this. The only thing that's different this time is Trump. He's just not a regular Republican who would talk to him or herself and among their friends. Trump is on twitter and he's loud. He can drive home the point.

Crazy Nancy knows that the President must be willing to sign any bill that the House passes. This is all on her. We don’t need another $2 trillion to bail out NYC, Chicago, Milwaukee, NY, IL and WI.

You need to relax the lockdowns ASAP, much more than you need a stimulus.

Especially the severe lockdowns in the big states like California.
They are severely hampering your recovery, even in states with minimal lockdowns.

buwaya said...

Let businesses operate normally again and a "stimulus" will be moot.

Come on Mcconnell. Put a bill on the floor today and take a vote.

Not so sure. She and the Dems now own the problem of Americans not getting their stimulus checks. She thought that she had the upper hand, with he election coming up, so threw in her laundry list, including almost as much as Trump wants for just stimulus checks as bailouts for failed Blue states and cities. She got greedy. There is a saying: 'Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered' that is very applicable here. Pelosi and the Dems are very much looking to me like the hogs right now,

Watch the market today. My bet is that it will rebound today after the drop yesterday in response to his walking out of the negotiations. His offer is on the table, and is going to be much harder to refuse. Why should we here in rural MT be bailing out Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, NYC, etc, because they allowed BLM and AntiFA to burn their cities? Bailing out CA because of the grossly inflated salaries and pensions that they have awarded their state and municipal employees? Some of them make even more than the President would, if he took his salary. A lot more than the VP, Members of Congress, the Joint Chiefs, etc. make. Or most of us here. She is asking the American public to pay six figure pensions to retired govt workers in CA and NYC, which is significantly above what most Americans make when working. She can’t justify this to the American public. She figured that Trump and the Republicans HAD to fold because of the election. Nope.

I think that Pelosi is now owned on this issue by Trump.

President Trump going around the media/dnc narrative setting(lies)

President Trump (note the silence from Republicans) can flood the news cycle with a bill of no more than 6 items, in a bill to provide EMERGENCY relief. Pelosi REFUSES to consider this bill. Yes there will be some good things left out, but that the price Pelosi forces on the people.

The media/dnc refuses to lay out the facts. Pelosi is using the people that are most in need to drag $trillion of spending into the pockets of her friends. Spending that could not make it out of the House, unless its predicated on emergency needs.
This is something the dnc/media, hides. Forget about reporting. Actively hiding the information from the population.

stevew said...

As an aside: it's all monopoly money anyway; they're arguing over spending an amount of money that isn't in the Treasury. Fighting over the politics of it for an advantage is therefore the only thing to do.

Sounds like weak DNC talking points. You really don't know anything about the market do you?

The market is how much higher since Trump was elected? Maybe you should look that up.

Despite the Wuhan Flu crisis, the market is stubbornly high, probably too high.

Stuffed with pork for her Lobbyist donors, Nancy is not happy that she can't reward them for helping to burn down the country. Maybe she should pay them out of her own pocket.

More funny money is a stupid idea.

Granted, what Trump has said he would sign is less stupid than the House proposal, but it's still a stupid idea.

Big Mike said...

This is interesting. Nancy Pelosi is not used to losing, but Donald Trump literally wrote the book on negotiating, and he has the bully pulpit. Will that be enough? If enough of Pelosi’s caucus members start contemplating a return to civilian life on November 3rd, will there be a behind-closed-doors revolt?

Remember the ancient Chinese curse about living in interesting times? 2020 is turning out to be even more interesting than 1968.

Leland said...

From what I'm hearing from people following this (I don't, because this isn't money coming to me at all); they see this as Nancy Pelosi gumming up the works. Trying to blame Trump is not working for them.

Or we here in rural Virginia? Plus I assume it is only deference to our hostess that causes you to lump Madison and Kenosha into “ et cetera.”

"Trump comes back to the table"

More like: Trump tells Nancy: I have another table over here if you're interested. It's a better table. No hot seats like the one you're now stuck sitting in. In fact, this table doesn't even have chairs. It's curbside pickup. All you have to do is drive by and sign and everyone wins — you, me, and the American People. (Don't forget to wear your mask, Nance!)

Let's see how many lies are packed into two short sentences... Market tanking... one-day downturn followed by a normal recovery the next...sure the market has "tanked". By the way the markets up over 400 points as I type this. A "Roid rage tweetstorm"...is an assumption of facts not in evidence about the tweets being sent in a "roid rage". A continuation of negotiations being an abrupt about-face...has Mark never been in a negotiation?

Conflating a negotiation tactic with "visionary leadership"... sorry but not sorry, just plain stupid. Trying to be on both sides at once...in what fevered brain does this even make sense? He clearly has his objectives for the stimulus package which are at odds with what is being offered by Pelosi. How is this being at two sides at once? All from his "hospital bed in the East Wing" which again states facts, not in evidence and observably patently false.

I do have to thank people like Mark, reading well-reasoned conservative positions as compared to the poorly thought out, blindingly stupid, and usually nasty comments from liberals like Mark are what brought me over from the lib side many years ago. They still never disappoint!

One used to be able to buttress a point by referring to modern classics such as 1984, Animal Farm, Atlas Shrugged, Bonfire of the Vanities, Catch-22 and the like. However, today's college indoctrinated Dems will look at you blankly because they have never read those books. They only read "approved books" and articles.

Pelosi, if she has any advisers and not just Yes-men, will counter with more, say $2400.
Trump would accept it, I think, despite the negative incentive such a larger amount provides to return to work, because he could claim success in stopping the bailout of bankrupt Dem hellholes.

I told you last night, Lefty Mark, that Trump was likely trying to make a deal by first walking away. It won't work because the Democrats would rather inject bleach into their veins than pass a stimulus before the election, but Trump has now raised the political cost of that refusal.

The individual tax filer stimulus cost is about 1/10th the size of the porkulus bill Nancy passed just last week. Fucking 1/10th.

Yancey Ward said...

jeremyabrams wrote:

Exactly right- the topic has now focused entirely on the individual stimulus part of the negotiations- this will increase the pain of Democrats if they don't at least counter Trump's offer with, as a commenter immediately above wrote, by increasing the $1200 number. An offer of $2400 would be accepted immediately by Trump and the Republican Senate would go along with it as a result.

Dow currently at 28,314.

Dumb Lefty Mark, who previously conclusively demonstrated he did not know how to google a single name, "inexplicably" (LOL) fails to research current market performance before making another voice-actuated lefty/NPC comment.

Unexpectedly.

Investors Business Daily: "The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 450 points on President Trump's latest coronavirus stimulus tweets. Dow Jones stocks Apple and Boeing snapped back, while Tesla rallied more than 2% before cutting gains in morning trade. DraftKings dived as much as 8% after pricing its share offering."

This just in: Dumb Lefty Mark is.....well......dumb.

Not sure a stimulus is necessary. The only thing keeping the employment rate down now are the ridiculous regulations in Blue states. A lot of states are already back to normal unemployment or just a bit above.

Low income retired here. Inflation is 20-30 percent on some food items. A stimulus check helps manage the pandemic issues 30,000 feet people don't think about.

Trickle up avoids the corruption that occurs in pigeon holed trickle down. Best way to stimulate a pandemic economy across the board.

GoP politicians are clueless. Trump served up an easy pitch for them to hit out of the park but I see none on twitter hammering their opponents over the $1,200 stimulus.

Seems like Nancy's got herself between a rock and a hard place. Puts me in mind of that fabled colloquy:

Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?

Well, um, yes...

Sleep with me for 3 dollars?

Absolutely not, what do you think I am?

We've already established that, now we're just negotiating price.

So no, I don't think Nancy can afford to come back with any alternatives that don't leave her looking like a greedy, mendacious sellout.
