"The man whose father told him there are only killers and zeros, the man who cruelly castigated others as losers, the man who was taught to fear losing above all else..."

"... has been doing some very public losing of his own. Upsetting as it is to see the president and first lady facing a mortal threat — and the glee and memes from some on the left were vulgar — it was undeniable that reality was crashing in on the former reality star.... Tuesday’s debate pierced another reality that Trump had been hawking on Fox for months — that his opponent was an addled husk who would need performance drugs to stand at the podium, and that Trump would stride in like a colossus and clobber him in a trice. Instead, the ugly reality was there for all to see: Trump was truculent, whiny and nasty, and Joe Biden was fine. Trump was indecent, on everything from white supremacists to Hunter Biden’s addiction, and Biden was decent. And, in the end, the con man in the Oval Office could not con the virus. He was a perverse Pied Piper of contagion, luring crowds to his rallies and events on the White House lawn, even as he mocked the safety measures recommended by his own government, sidelined and undermined Dr. Anthony Fauci, and turned the mask into a symbol of blue-state wimpiness.... It seemed inevitable that Trump would get infected, given his insouciance on the issue of protective measures combined with his age, weight and ambitious travel schedule. He seemed oddly intent on tempting fate...."

That's Maureen Dowd, detailing the narrative arc of tragedy, in "Reality Bursts the Trumpworld Bubble/In a moment that feels biblical, the implacable virus has come to the president’s door" (NYT).

Every day in March and April we were updated by the president, Birx and Fauci. Every day they informed the public via a very shitty media medium of current recommendations and info on what plans were in place for PPE and travel etc. Given we lived through that, through “two weeks to slow the spread” and through the negotiations for the aid and and unemployment, America has a fairly fresh memory of a LOT being done. So the media’s dishonest repeat attempts to say Trump ignored it or downplayed it are annoying to the extreme. The media blaming Trump for contracting it, even though he is in the prime demographic for getting it, reminds me of Coumo blaming the old people in NY nursing homes for giving it to others in their home. Sick and disgusting.

And no other NYT columnist has naysayers the art of weaving suck and disgusting tales than MoDo the ho for SloJoe.

Since I am the screenwriter of the soon-to-win-a-Oscar "Frankenstein, Part II," I need to weigh in. Someone else here on the blog mentioned Joseph Campbell and I'll pick up on that.

Right now we are deep in the Third Act. Our Hero, Trump, has seen the Walls Crashing In. He's behind in the polls. He "lost" the debate according to the Fake News. And now this: Covid-19. He's life could be lost. Doesn't get any more dramatic than that!

He's been harmed by his own hubris and vanity. Refusing to wear a mask when he introduced the sainted ACB as his SCOUTUS nominee. Maybe he got infected by the president of Notre Dame. A priest!

This is what is known in the trade as the All is Lost scene.

Americans love a happy ending. Our Hero will recover and he will do so thanks to science. And the prayers and good will of the American people.

He will do the debates. He will barnstorm the country the next 30 days. He is tireless and fearless. He's a Man's Man. He's the Indispensable Man; just like our First President. God gave America Trump in its Time of Need.

The Dems will cheat in the election, but Trump will win! I've scaled it back to only 39 states.

The Fake News will go wild on Election Night. It will try to spin the Red Mirage and Late Count scenario but the facts and math won't work for their lies.

Maureen Dowd will still be unmarried. She's such a witch. She should have gotten married when she had here chance. If she was on Match.com, I'd block her.

Winning. Winning. Winning.

Laughing my ass off! What will Dowd write when Trump returns triumphantly after surviving this "mortal threat"? He is 74 years old that is already a mortal threat, so is being 75, and 76.

Of all the distasteful habits of the left, perhaps most distasteful of all is the habit, when bad things happen to people they don't like, of seeing those bad things as a judgement from God, as karma confirming their own rightness. Whether it is 9/11 hijackers or a virus, its real purpose is to prove the rightness of whatever the liberals are pushing today.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners use their setbacks as an opportunity to learn and get better from it. But they do not stop. They keep moving forward, learning from what happened, and doing it better- or differently- the next time. But they do not stop.

Losers sit in apartments in New York wringing their hands as they comment on other peoples lives.

If anyone for a minute thinks this will stop Trump from moving forward, they don't know the character of people like him. Biden is nothing like Trump. Biden has lived for 50 years off the teat of the people. Trump built things, developed things, created real buildings, resorts, condos, etc, that created real jobs for people. He didn't just give speeches talking about how he'd create 1 million shovel ready jobs and then go back to eating steak at The Palm.

Mid-Life Lawyer said...

I do agree that Trump behaved and performed badly at the debate but not that Biden was "fine". There is a video going around with clips from major media outlets showing that Trump has denounced all manner of white supremacy, KKK, David Duke, etc. about twenty times and most of those times in the last 5 years so any writer or journalist who uses that bullshit trope is automatically discredited in my eyes. The trick is to ask Trump about the issue over and over so that the nitwits will think he has refused to answer it in the past because he's sympathetic. You have to be a nitwit to vote Democrat so it works on those voters. Other than that, Dowd is a good writer and Trump really did step in it on not keeping himself protected better from the virus.

The "implacable virus" that kills roughly one in a thousand people under 70 that it infects?

Five out of a hundred for those over 70 who get the disease?

200,000 dead in a country of 330 MILLION?

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/09/25/cdc-data-shows-high-virus-survival-rate-99-plus-for-ages-69-and-younger-94-6-for-older/

I'm sure the Europeans who lived through the Black Death--which killed 40% of Europe---would take issue with MoDo.

I'm also sure she would have been LESS sympathetic to Trump if he had cowered in the White House like Prince Prospero in Poe's "Masque of the Red Death", who arrogantly believed his wealth, power and ability to isolate himself from the dirty peasant Deplorables would protect him from Death itself.

https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/poestories/section10/

"A disease known as the Red Death plagues the fictional country where this tale is set, and it causes its victims to die quickly and gruesomely. Even though this disease is spreading rampantly, the prince, Prospero, feels happy and hopeful. He decides to lock the gates of his palace in order to fend off the plague, ignoring the illness ravaging the land."....

... "the story also means to punish Prospero’s arrogant belief that he can use his wealth to fend off the natural, tragic progress of life. Prospero’s arrogance combines with a grievous insensitivity to the plight of his less fortunate countrymen. Although he possesses the wealth to assist those in need, he turns his wealth into a mode of self-defense and decadent self-indulgence. His decadence in throwing the masquerade ball, however, unwittingly positions him as a caged animal, with no possible escape."

So...the chickens have come home for Trump, who did his best to do his job, and to be out among the people, DESPITE the risks he faced.

For this Dowd jeers and mocks him.

What a turd she is.

A sulphate of any one of certain metals, as copper, iron, zinc, cobalt. So called on account of the glassy appearance or luster. (b) Sulphuric acid; -- called also oil of vitriol. So called because first made by the distillation of green vitriol. See Sulphuric acid, under Sulphuric. [Colloq.]

I find it interesting that Maureen Dowd crossed the victim blaming line here.

I remember back when one of the Kennedys was on trial for raping a teenager in Florida - we were told, by the pundits on the cable news, that the prosecutor was hard as nails, but the hard as nails prosecutor lost the case.

We were told the woman was drunk and did not understand that the young Kennedy (later a respected doctor in the Veterans Administration) was just "being a guy" when he told her, before the sexual act which was or was not criminal (that was what the trial was about), that he was a Kennedy and that he really liked her and she thought "well maybe I too will be a Kennedy someday" ----- and if I remember the cable news analysis correctly (but who among us remembers cable news analysis from the 80s correctly), the prosecutor did not get a conviction because a few old Floridian ladies on the jury "blamed the victim" for being a little too drunk and wearing skimpy clothes.

Funny to see Maureen Dowd blaming the victims. She always seemed misogynist - like so many bitter elderly fallen-away Catholic women.

That is not, by the way, a good look for someone who thinks of herself as an integral part of the election campaign for her fancy man: but that being said, it is not like there are many people who are not people who decided long ago to vote against Trump are reading the sad invective of poor Maureen. Misogyny and blaming the victim can win, when one is trying to convince a jury, because out of any group of 12 people there might be one or two who buy into misogyny and blaming the victim, but misogyny and blaming the victim are utter poison to the good-hearted swing voters in battleground states.

Anyway, nobody reads Maureen Dowd and then says, hey I loved Trump and now I no longer do! The poor woman is speaking into a void, and if she believes otherwise she is mistaken. Well paid, I grant you, but mistaken.

If you are reading this Maureen, say a rosary, and I promise you that if you do, I will be, if I am able, reciting the Joyful Mysteries right along with you. Particularly the decades of Presentation and the Finding at the Temple. "Jim" raised the question about--if Trump's illness is used by the pro-mask crowd as an argument for wearing masks-- how long are we supposed to go on wearing masks? "Another year? Two years? Forever?"

Reminds me of Sobran's Question, when the late libertarian journalist Joseph Sobran would ask "liberals" and other State-fellators, "So how long are we supposed to go on increasing statism?" Until there is zero liberty? Until the standard tax rate is eighty percent of one's income? Ninety percent? 100? Sobran said he never could get a straight answer on that.

Considering the pro-mask crowd appear to be "liberals"--as I call then, the Gang that Couldn't and Wouldn't Shoot Straight--Jim probably shouldn't wait around for a straight answer to his question either.

I marvel at how Dowd and other left-leaning journos can start using a lie as the premise and then build upon it... the lie be damned. As if Trump called dead soldiers losers and zeroes. If the premise is false, then what follows is invalidated. Except for propaganda purposes, which is the entire point of her article.
