That ad played during the World Series. I'm not watching the World Series. I read about the ad in that WaPo article I linked to in the previous post. According to WaPo: "While Trump on Tuesday appealed in person to his most ardent fans with divisive themes, Joe Biden’s campaign beamed in to the nation’s living rooms during the World Series with a much broader audience in mind."
Yes, whoever made that ad, sure had the "broader audience in mind." I can picture clever fellows laughing at their own work, comparing it to a "South Park" parody, and joking about how dumb Americans are.
Watching that ad, a few seconds in, Meade said "Tegridy Farms," and toward the end, I said, "This is for the dumb people" and "Actually, this is very effective." I could feel the emotion they were trying to put over. Joe will bring us together — no reason why and don't you worry your head about what he'll actually do while you're in a hypnotic fog of phony-baloney togetherness.
I'm looking for the right "Tegridy Farms" ad to convey Meade's point. There's this, but as Meade said, "It doesn't have enough of that voice — you know, like that guy... that guy in 'The Big Lebowski.'" I say: "Sam Elliott! You do realize the voice in the Biden ad is Sam Elliott." Meade thought it was just some guy doing his damnedest to sound like Sam Elliott. No, that's actually Sam Elliott. You might think Sam Elliott is such an extreme that he'd be reserved for the comic exaggeration of the voice of a narrator...
... but the Biden campaign is using him utterly seriously, to stir our soulfully deep desire for America.
Why don't they just give us the marijuana already? Then we could sit back and laugh at all this absurdity. Ah, but then you'd be like me, abstaining.* They need you to vote. You've got to melt into a pool of goo and yet maintain sufficient semblance to a human creature to check a box on a mail-in ballot.

What are the ratings for the world series this year?
Preaching to the kneelers.
This is a huge coup for Joe, who averages 3.4 people per rally.
Great job!

I'm actually on board if they go full Weimar.
At that point just rewrite the Constitution to pay my mortgage and other bills
And free food too.

I made mention of that ad yesterday on another thread. Quite disappointed in Sam Elliott for this. I know, no one should ever invest ANY emotional energy in actors, they are paid to lie BUT you "think" you get a feel for some of them and one can not help but sometimes confuse the roles they play with the people they are. The fact that Sam is "all in" for Joe is just disappointing and sad. He just comes across as someone with more intelligence than that. Thinking that basement Joe can do ANYTHING other than make money selling out his country to foreign interests is laughable if it were not so serious.
I instantly thought of Sam Elliot's great cameos on Parks and Recreation. Where he was first the compatriot-betrayer of Ron Swanson.
Althouse, have you watched that show? Press through the 1st season and then it's amazing. They get a political balance that's so rare and needed. Especially noteworthy now that Chris Pratt is in the news.
Sorry Sam, you are a lying dog faced pony soldier!
Is the amateurish piano line supposed to represent that we all need to re-learn slowly how to become 'Mericans again?
Question is whether that 'Merica is the old one -- and the ad's appeal is basically 'Make America Great Again' -- or does it hide some hellish "new normal"?
Not sure Biden's cloying message overcomes the rapid 'hell in a bucket' that many people see on the horizon if he's elected.
It looked like a Republican ad. I laughed when Elliot said “new energy” or something like that as Joe Biden made his first appearance. Yeah, Joe Biden, new energy.
Interesting that they chose Harpers Ferry at 0:06. Did they not know what happened there?
At the end it talks about loving the country but there are so many Democrats that clearly do not love this country.
I think Joe probably does. But Kamala? The Obamas? BLM?
I don't see much love in them for anything but power.
'murica needs some 'tegredy. Any fool can see that. We got to this godfersaken place due to lack of 'tegredy.
If I could post that gif of Sam giving the wink and the hat tip, I'd do it.
I just hope we'll still be able to laugh at this, or anything else, a month from now.
Admittedly, I would consider voting for someone who ran the 'Tegridy ad. But the "We don't have Republican mountains" is soft-focus pap. If Biden wanted to win, he'd have spent the last four years addressing issues with direct, authentic action. And not resorting to warmed-over Obama solutions. That's how you got Trump in the first place!
It doesn't matter, though. Hunter Biden's emails are the gift that keeps on giving, and the Bidens are SCREWED. I genuinely believe Biden will withdraw from the race tomorrow, if not today. Storm's incoming.
There is, however, a Republican River. It's in Nebraska.
Cowboy Sam Elliot. I guess Katharine Ross got to him.
Every time I watch Univision the "Joe Biden, un hombre de bien" commercial shows up. It's "Joe Biden, a good man" every hour on the hour, it seems. It's an effort to "humanize" somebody who really doesn't need it that ends up "dehumanizing" him. Where's the guy who's been in politics for 47 years, cutting corners and making deals? Where's the guy who's every bit as insecure and boastful as his opponent? The real Joe gets lost in the effort to make him a saint.
I don't know about the "loving America" question. There has been a progressive tradition in America that thinks of the country as an ideal to be fulfilled, and doesn't necessarily relate well to the real existing America. That's not my tradition, but it's been around since the beginning and isn't something one can separate from America.
Things got messed up in the 1960s for that liberal/progressive tradition. We were a world power wielding power all over the world, not a struggling new nation. Average Americans had more money and became the left's targets instead of the rich and privileged. The real America looked more alienated from the ideal America than ever before. I haven't made up my mind about what all this adds up to, but the "they don't love America" argument sounds too divisive, too "them versus us" for me.
Utter garbage. Reeks of desperation.
By this point in the election, Biden ought to have the dumb voters locked down. If they're still in play, Trump's going to cruise.
"The piano gets the harmony wrong, not easy to do with only two notes maximum."
My guess is it's deliberate, intended to make you feel like a parent listening to your child and proud of the effort and the modest progress.
My personal favorite ad running right now says "Joe Biden doesn't need to be the center of attention"
Obviously, they are trying to make up for the fact that Joe Biden leaves the campaign trail for days at a time. But some of us are old enough to remember the other Joe Biden. The Joe Biden who LOVES being the center of attention. Who made every judiciary hearing about himself.
Such a great idea to try to repackage his obviously failing health into a moral positive.
"Althouse, have you watched that show? Press through the 1st season and then it's amazing. They get a political balance that's so rare and needed. Especially noteworthy now that Chris Pratt is in the news."
I maybe have tried to watch an episode. Not really into the sitcoms, and workplace sitcoms make me feel bad. I really hate to watch people suffering in a low-level office situation.
“I'm naturally this way.”
And that, my friend, is true ‘tegrity!
Joe Biden does not love this country. There is absolutely nothing in his 47 years of sucking at the public teat and terrorizing innocent citizens that exhibits love of country in any way.
The Biden camp's slogan's are the worst "Go From There"?? WTF does that means/ "Build Back Better"???? That's not even English.

I encourage you to vote for President Trump and to publicly endorse him.
I think it would help.
I really don’t get your line of thought here. Are you just assuming that everybody is on the take like Joe? You might be right there.
I watched the Biden ad. I thought it felt a bit Ken Burns-y.
"The piano gets the harmony wrong, not easy to do with only two notes maximum."
Under the Democrats tax plan you only get to keep two notes maximum...
I think you might like it. It's not at all like The Office, which was more about humor from embarrassing and shaming moments. While there's occasional conflict, it's really more about honoring the differences among people and building community for the most part, more like Friends in that way.
The timing of the add was off. Like they stretched a 55 second ad into a 60 second time slot. Had they sped the audio (and video to match) up slightly, it would have been more effective.
"Did you inhale?"
I have — in Colorado, when it was legal — inhaled on different occasions and I have used edibles. I have felt mildly queasy and once felt rather alienated and apathetic. Never any good feeling at all. Nothing like euphoria. Nothing better than nothing.
"Fresh start" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I've cleaned mold out of rental house refrigerators, abandoned during long Texas summers, fresher than anything Joe's ever started. He is the epitomy of all that is wrong with the Democratic Party, as Romney and McCain were for Republicans in recent elections.
Joe, your party has spent the past 4 years telling me I deserve to be at least censored, preferably imprisoned, ideally dead. To HELL with you and yours, asshat.
If Biden wins, Althouse will spend the next 4 years studiously noting the Democrat's lurch into fascism. But when she had a chance to do something about it? Well, you know, icky orange man.
Unfortunate ads tend to appeal to emotions, those who like reasoned opinion can look at the many people switching from the Republican party to vote Biden or listen to folks like this: Nearly 700 economists, including seven Nobel winners, are urgently warning against the reelection of President Donald Trump, citing what they describe as a "sustained assault" on democracy, a bumbled response to the pandemic and the spread of "dangerous misinformation.
At this late stage I do find it a little wierd that the Biden campaign making ham handed overtures toward fly-over deplorables. I thought the entire Democrat strategy was based around the notion that due to demogrpahic shifts they no longer needed that particular demographic. I can't tell if it speaks of desperation or over confidence that they would put out such an ad now.
Don't show this ad to Antifa. They might start rioting.
Sounds like a Sam Elliott impersonator.
That's hilarious. "A new start" with Joe Biden. Yea, the guy who actually started when I was in middle school. There is nothing his campaign says that is actually true.
I really, really expect to see a Biden ad saying we really should water plants with Brawndo, water is only good for use in toilets...
A hostile takeover of US politics by the CCP, kamaflaged as gooey American. Ugh.
I’m embarrassed for Sam Elliott just as I am embarrassed for all who will vote for Joe Biden, the worst candidate in my lifetime. Dropped out of two previous races in disgrace, 47 years in government with no significant achievement, a foreign policy buffoon, now representing a movement that ignores history and despises our country. Worst of all, he has been exposed as a shameless grifter feeding like a pig at the trough of public office while enriching his shoats.
An ad like this is the height of hypocrisy for the party of sedition whose Brownshirts still run unchecked in major cities and who even now are planning massive post-election demonstrations and disruptions should fake news and voter fraud not bring them victory.
John Doman from The Wire also does Biden ads. Not a bad choice for Biden: sounds like a tough guy, some Philadelphia accent. Went to college with Trump. Played on the football team, but studied English lit. Ex-Marine. Vietnam. MBA. Late start acting. Played a cop. A gay cop, but that was done with such subtlety nobody noticed.
The actual ad is laughable. Few traces of the real Biden:
“Some people are always in a hurry. They run when they could walk. Race up steps when others take it slow. When Joe Biden’s president, America is just going to have to keep up,” narrator John Doman read over video of Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, walking quickly — juxtaposed with a video of Trump stumbling down a ramp.
...
“We won’t have to wait to deal with COVID-19. He’s already got a plan,” Doman continued. “Won’t have to wait for a president on the side of working families. He’s from Scranton. No one has to tell him Wall Street didn’t build this country. He knows who did. We’re a nation that’s been hit hard by this virus. But Joe Biden knows when you get knocked down you get up off the mat.
“No one needs to tell Joe how hard life can hit you. Losing a wife, a daughter, a son. But he knows it’s in the pain you can find purpose. To lead America, you need to understand America.”
No slow Joe. Biden can actually walk and has some energy left. Tough guy Biden. Working-class Joe from the mean back streets of Scranton. Not the Senator from MBNA who sold out to the big banks. Again with the COVID plan Biden doesn't actually have. Again with the dead wife. And hey, he's from Scranton.
My name is Tony Bobulinski. The facts set forth below are true and accurate; they are not any form of domestic or foreign disinformation. Any suggestion to the contrary is false and offensive. I am the recipient of the email published seven days ago by the New York Post which showed a copy to Hunter Biden and Rob Walker. That email is genuine.
This afternoon I received a request from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs and the Senate Committee on Finance requesting all documents relating to my business affairs with the Biden family as well as various foreign entities and individuals. I have extensive relevant records and communications and I intend to produce those items to both Committees in the immediate future.
I am the grandson of a 37 year Army Intelligence officer, the son of a 20+ year career Naval Officer and the brother of a 28 year career Naval Flight Officer. I myself served our country for 4 years and left the Navy as LT Bobulinski. I held a high level security clearance and was an instructor and then CTO for Naval Nuclear Power Training Command. I take great pride in the time my family and I served this country. I am also not a political person. What few campaign contributions I have made in my life were to Democrats.
If the media and big tech companies had done their jobs over the past several weeks I would be irrelevant in this story. Given my long standing service and devotion to this great country, I could no longer allow my family’s name to be associated or tied to Russian disinformation or implied lies and false narratives dominating the media right now.

I have a client whom I visited last night and he is one of the sheep that consumes commercials like the one you linked and yes he voted for SinoJoe.
His reason....inarticulate hate of Trump.
He is my client so I WILL NOT push logic and facts too hard, but it was very instructive... for moi.
2 mins of hate works very well for those with little frontal lobe activation.
"Sounds like a Sam Elliott impersonator."
He's descended into self-parody. But it was always parody.
when did they turn him into a Ken doll?
Beats talking about Hunter's many international friends and the "big fella's" China policy.
There's a downside to having a population so dumbed down that it bases its votes on feels.
Joe Biden is disqualified though, yes?
Like a Leftist vision of a Rightist Nike or Levi’s ad. Strange that they bothered. Like the political class itself, the people that create political ads seem oddly disconnected from where the American Head, of any ideological stripe, is at right now.
Win or lose, Trump promised to upset the Establishment apple cart, and he has been wildly successful at that. And, though they’re no doubt unaware of it, the unhinged Democrat attacks upon him have been very much part of fulfilling that promise. Norms violated will not be re-established merely because power changes hands. It’s a new morning in America.
@Todd
"I really, really expect to see a Biden ad saying we really should water plants with Brawndo, water is only good for use in toilets..."
Don't be a fag. Vote Biden, the malarkey MUTILATOR!
I don’t watch South Park very often, but that guy with the black mustache is the best character.
Television political ads are worthless in this day and age. Almost no one watches them- I don't care if you put them on the Super Bowl- people fast forward or mute them the instant they come on the screen. It such ads worked, it would be President Hillary Clinton today, not Trump. All such ads do is put money in the pockets of broadcasters, the ad agencies, and the political consultants who coordinate them. People won't even watch ads of candidates for which they are voting. Online political advertising is even more worthless, and almost surely is a net negative to candidates employing it.
I'm sure Joe Biden does love America. The voters gave him decades of unbelievable political power, and he returned the favor by shaking down a bunch of foreign interests with his crackhead son. Just fleecing those damn dirty foreigners.
The message, if there is one, is that Biden is a nice guy who doesn’t attack people like Trump does, so vote for him. But Biden built his campaign on attacking Trump for something he never said. Somebody who recently called the President a clown and told him to “Shut up, man!” is now the sweet guy above the fray? Not one mention of any accomplishment from 50 years in politics, not one campaign platform item. I’d like to think Americans smarter than this, but then I look back to 2008 and “Yes We Can.”
A fresh start, with Biden ? Right.
The question is can Biden and his people play both sides of the patriotism street at the same time? While this ad was running during the World Series (presumably because viewers there are believed to skew older and whiter than the general public demogrpahic), his campaign team was offering up this tweet overnight.
Hard to square that ad during the World Series and a statement supposedly from the candidate saying "America was an idea. We've never lived up to it but we've never walked away from it before.", where the "We've never lived up to it before" part is likely to irk the same people the TV ad is trying to target, but get nodding agreement from the people who'd see the TV as ad maudlin patriotism trying to pander to jingoistic idiots. Seems like you're hoping both sides never see the ads targeted for the other group, but in the Internet age nothing (including laptop contents) stays hidden for very long.
"just to agree, we all love this country."
Now, if Biden/Harris had said that loudly at the height of the riots, I'd have more respect for them. But let's face it, the Democrats are putting out some mixed messages on this, running on love of country and putting divisions behind us, while embracing factions on the left who unabashedly hate this country, and/or want a Truth and Reconciliation commission after their final victory.
One person at our house got two ballots.
The election commission in Clark County Nevada (most of the voters) turned down the sensitivity setting on the signature verifying machines from 50 to 40, which the manufacturer says should not be done unless it's a bipartisan vote, which it was not.
Nothing to worry about at all.
Sam Elliot's Official Endorsement of the Biden-Harris Ticket
Some 25 yo copywriter was told to Youtube Reagan's "Morning in America" ad over the weekend. He/she/they did a yeoman's labor with the opening thought - but some asshole ECD insisted on that cornball music track. Rather watch a Paul Harvey Dodge truck ad.
It doesn't even sound like Sam Elliot - he sounds as old as Joe Biden.
I realize we're a politically divided country, but it still amazes me that anyone can vote for Joe; I've never been able to see any redeeming features. So I would guess the percentage of people voting against Trump this year must be at least as high as the percentage that voted against Hillary last time.
I'm not watching the World Series.
Because it's not sophisticated enough.
And here's Joe's latest ad: We haven't lived up to our 'self-evident' truths. The Dude may abide, but it looks like Joe doesn't.

Listen Fat..
You have to love that the party that claims every Trump voter is a racist who needs re-education from Robert Reich, the party that falsely claimed a SCOTUS nominee was a gang rapist, the party that claims Trump is responsible for every person who died from a disease, the party that claims Republicans want blacks in chains, and that all white people are racist, and that the US was formed only to promote slavery, which the US apparently invented (nevermind the fact it was around since the dawn of man, and continuers today in Asia and Africa, the party that has ginned up hysteria over Covid wants to unify the country?
Okay. Stupid people indeed.
"He's descended into self-parody."
That's the whole joke in Parks and Rec, his macho, man's man image is initially right in line with Ron Swanson (who is one of the very, very few positively displayed libertarians on TV) an then he capitalizes on his long-standing reputation for the contrasting humor.
Wow, the ad is a slap in the face to BLM, Antifa and AOC. It's not wise to insult your political base.
Obama made his bones telling 'Merica that these were not Red or Blue problems, but American problems, he would not be a Democrat or Republican President, but the President of all the people.
We know how that worked out. This country completely split apart under Obama. His smile while he lied to your face took it's toll. But Obama was a newbie. There was not much public record on him and what there was, most of the public did not get to find out (the press was working their magic then as well).
But Biden? He's got a long track record of ridiculous statements, comments, and accusations. As do I, but I'm not running for President. And Biden's latest tale of corruption, sleaze, and lying to all of America does not jive with any of what is in that syrupy ad. Americans will know what's what.
Biden is going down. Either now- before he's President, or after the election. No matter the results, your choices are Trump or Kamalaland. Think Kamala is built to bring 'Merica together?
I remember when Althouse put up the Bernie ad with Simon & Garfunkel's "America". Now that was a moving ad because the song is moving. (It was for me, at least, and AA.) This student piano is ice picks to the temple.
Also, when Joe hugs the guy in the wheelchair all I can think of is him saying, "Stand up!"
Does anyone here think that Sam Elliot is some sort of sacrosanct American character above reproach?
I watched the game and saw the commercial. I thought it was a Trump ad.
No one associates the U.S. flag with Democrats
"They get a political balance that's so rare and needed."
Probably because Tina Fey is a producer. Before you say "But, Sarah Palin" recall that in the 8 years of 30 Rock, Liz Lemon's predictably ersatz-progressive character was lampooned repeatedly. Jack Donaghy, the textbook Corporate Republican is proven right many many times. The political balance on that show was very similar to Parks & Rec.
Fey strikes me similar to Jerry Seinfeld or Fred Armisen in that she is foremost interested in what's funny.
That bringing us together crap is pretty funny. The Democrats have now spent years telling me that I'm wrong and everything about me is wrong: my skin color, my religion, my values, my skepticism of their bullshit, how I raise my children, my votes, the state I live in, and worst of all my intransigence toward their agenda. And I'm supposed to believe they're going to bring "people" together? Hey potatoes: here's a tip: don't spend years shitting on me and my people and then try to sell that you're going to do anything other than stomp on my face.
I don't care for the politics of fear, so I run that through the 'am I feeding myself bullshit that I would criticize in someone else?' filter, but it comes out ok because I'm not the one who started this shit. I'm one of those old school 'hey good people can disagree and live side by side in harmony' softies, but the left decided that can't be a thing anymore, and that's on them.
You're reading the WaPoo?? I trust you're spraying it with disinfectant first...
There is a lot of Biden's "handsiness" in this ad.
Hey, everybody! I'm hosting a Reich-toss party on Saturday and yer all invited!
That a Republican would forgo this kind of appeal is political malpractice.
Abstinence is the first choice. Then prevention, compassion, and responsibility. Unfortunately, too many people are Pro-Choice.
"Joe Biden does not love this country. There is absolutely nothing in his 47 years of sucking at the public teat and terrorizing innocent citizens that exhibits love of country in any way."
And Trump does? Hahahahaha! They're both hucksters serving themselves.
Here in Vegas we see ads for Kamala Harris, which look like Harris for President ads repurposed for her current run. So far no TV ads for Trump. Maybe I'm watching the wrong stations.
telling me that I'm wrong and everything about me is wrong
Pants, worst of all is your excessive number of growing carbon-emitters.
Not an ad, exactly, but still hilarious. Debate energy.
Shit Fire, That does it fer me. I'm votin The Big Man and the Key Contact. Thanks SAM!
There's Cookie clockin in for Iran!
Actors used to be treated as whores. We need to resurrect that tradition. Sam Elliot has demonstrated that he's nothing but a Democrat Whore.

"Television political ads are worthless in this day and age. Almost no one watches them- "
Actually, one of the key points in advertising is to reduce the role of cognitive dissonance in a decision you already made. That ad is not converting Trump voters or even undecideds. It's keeping everyone who sees it online and who has made up their made in Biden firmly in that camp.
I am certain, it's very effect from that stance. The democrats need to think of themselves as good people who love the ideas of America.
"Okay. Stupid people indeed."
You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.
mikee 9:16 -- Amen. I am embarrassed for the Democrats that they think they can win over Flyover Country by shooting it a minute's worth of utter bilge.
I heard the ad in the background during the game. It was a lovely piece of agitprop, clearly not intended for Biden's base, who hate Francis Scott Key's problematic song with a passion. And all of the positive platitudes that Elliott mouthed bear no relation to what the Democrats actually have planned for us if they win. There will be no "taking on problems and not each other." Robert Reich gave the game away: It will be the Orwellian "Committees of Truth and Reconciliation," punishment and vengeance for Trump, his administration and his supporters. This ad was targeted at the "dumb people" who are still undecided at this point. It is a time for choosing. You can choose to Keep America America. Or you can choose to join those who would raze our American heritage to the ground and erect some sort of alien edifice in its place. Choose. Wisely.
bagoh20,
Yea, the guy who actually started when I was in middle school.
Hmmm, that was the year that I was six-going-on-seven and asked my Mom why Match Game 73 was suddenly Match Game 74.
I read a for-real-no-sh*t op-ed piece in the NYT only a few days ago arguing that Biden was the "change candidate." After 47 years? There are things to like about Biden (at least, I hope there are), but that particular one is straight-up "malarkey."
They use change the tagline to:
"I'm Joe Biden and I approve BLM and Antifa stomping out this racist message"
Never any good feeling at all. Nothing like euphoria. Nothing better than nothing.
After 20 years of abstinence, I had friends come in from Seattle and gifted me with a Tegrity joint and some edibles. I had a very bad time. Nothing but paranoia and a vague creepiness.
Nothing like the 'fine colombian' I remembered from my youth.
The Democrats are trying to present a version of Reagan's "Morning in America" ad, wherein the virtues of the country are extolled, and tied to the virtues of the country's citizens. Democrats can't pull of such a renunciation of their One True Faith, that America is inherently, irredeemably, uncontrollably evil - racist, sexist, and guilty of every "-ism" under the sun, the moon, or found in deep dark caves.
The Dems running an ad like this is akin to Trump appearing in sack cloth, covered in ashes, crying for forgiveness of America's sins. This Democratic ad isn't a Big Lie, it is just nonsensical, unreal, an utter con; it is hilariously the exact opposite of those who ran the ad.
Just one America
Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer.
Or as Ma Larkey, would say: One party, One land, One people. And no more arguing at Thanksgiving 'cause disputacious old Auntie B is enjoying herself at the Community Camp for Advanced Senior Education with others of her kind and disputacious young fool C is putting his energies to good use rebuilding Uigherland. Just Thanksgiving that there is some food on the table.
@Althouse, you made it all the way through this ad without puking?
Sam must have eaten one of Randy's Tegridy burgers.
"That's the whole joke in Parks and Rec, ...”
It was kind of a motif in The Big Lebowski too. He tried to do a TV series where he was supposed to be a straight actor with that guy who replaced Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men, but he sucked. He is what he is, the poor man’s Morgan Freeman, who can actually act and carry a movie.
