"People have described the Cuomo-de Blasio shenanigans as a beef between two Italian-American men."

"But their backgrounds are vastly different. De Blasio, who is from Cambridge, Massachusetts, adopted his mother’s surname. His father was a Wasp and a Yale graduate who lost a leg at Okinawa. He later abandoned the family and, stricken with lung cancer, killed himself. De Blasio molded himself into a hardworking Brooklyn man of the people. 'It’s sort of a false identity, like the shit-kicking version of George W. Bush, whereas Andrew is who he is,' the former city official said...."

"Mario, as Andrew called his boss, was the son of Italian immigrants who had a corner grocery store. Mario graduated from St. John’s Law, top of the class, and, when no Manhattan firm would hire him, started out in Brooklyn; one of his clients was Fred Trump. Mario was a largely absent but highly demanding patriarch. Much has been made through the years, with little comment by Andrew himself, of Andrew’s desire to please or, as time has gone by, surpass his father. 'Mario was fucking brutal,' a former aide told me. 'Andrew was scarred.'"

Both deblasio and Cuomo are murderous tyrants.

Cuomo made specific decisions that caused the deaths of thousands. Decisions that any reasonable person would see would result in those people dying.

Shipping Covid positive patients to nursing homes was an evil decision. Cuomo should hang for it.

Deblasio is loudly and proudly anti freedom. Anyone who supports him should be shipped one way to China.

Andrew Cuomo helped create the banking requirements that brought us the subprime loan crisis and economic crash of 2007-2008. Amazingly, he went on to further successes, killing between 6,000 and 10,000 elderly with his mandates early in the COVID crisis. Obviously a rising star of the Democratic Party, I predict his election to the office of US President within a decade, followed by the first nuclear exchange between the US and a foreign power. After that, who knows!

The only amusing things about my state's politics is watching Cuomo humiliate DeBlasio whenever the opportunity presents itself. Besides that, their shenanigans and those of lesser lights of NYC gov like Tish James serve as a reminder that we have an atrocious political class. Unfortunately, there's a class of people, professional, competent people, who run the various NYC agencies like finance and transportation and so on. DeBlasio has been so bad, for so long, that most of those folks have resigned and been replaced by his appointees, so that we really are in some deep shit here. I know some of these ex-officials, some of who would like nothing more than to return to city govt--they were very powerful, and in the case of my acquaintances and friends oriented towards public service, having been through 9/11 and other catastrophes--but they wouldn't work for DeBlasio for double their substantial private sector haul. It's that demoralizing to be a part of his administration.

The Governor has been widely praised for his response to COVID.

Widely? Or strategically?

Have I been mistaken all these years in assuming the Andrew Cuomo’s father Mario was the Mario Cuomo who was governor of New York? This is confusing. Who’s the boss called Mario by Cuomo?

daskol said...

I thought Cuomo was doing a good job early on: he seemed pragmatic and did a good job on the public comms. Only later did we learn about his disastrous decisions on nursing homes, for example, or that we never even used the emergency hospitals the feds built for us. He gave good press conferences, especially compared to DeBlasio or NJ's execrable Governor, who seems so stupid it's hard to believe he had a successful career in finance (albeit as a lobbyist, basically). Cuomo's terrible decisions, desperate cover up and pugnacious and nasty attitude towards all who would question him brought me back to reality. I'm back to cringing at the sound of his whiney voice.

The Governor has been widely praised for his response to COVID. But his critics see a would-be authoritarian obsessed with settling scores.

Widely praised by the media- but not by anyone who understands numbers and is aware he pursued a policy of deliberately murdering old people in nursing homes.

As for "would-be authoritarian" no one in NY where I live, or on blogs where I comment, or on Facebook, has ever corrected me when I refer to him as "Dictator Cuomo".

It's the deputy commissioner level that actually makes the city run--gets the trash picked up, prevents the transit strikes, ensures collection of revenues--and they are, many of them, gone and replaced by much less competent people hired by DeBlasio's awful appointees. I really, really miss Bloomberg, who attracted a lot of talent to city govt, enough that it took well into DeBlasio's term for him to fuck the city up.

widely praised for his response to COVID!!!

His policy of forcing nursing homes to accept patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 is largely responsible for giving New York the second-highest death rate (171 deaths per 100,000 population), behind only New Jersey, where Governor Murphy has a similar policy. Why did he do this? One can only speculate, however it is fair to note that under Medicare/Medicaid rules it cost less to the state to force nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients than to quarantine them in a hospital setting, and also that more dead elderly, sickly people lowers the state's Medicare costs in the out years.

Italians have had to put up with a lot of crap over the years. A good example is the Chappaquiddick Kid sitting in judgment on Justice Alito, deliberately mangling his name and pronouncing it differently each time. Don't underestimate how big a deal shitting on Columbus is to the Italian community. Indigenous People's Day is fine but airbrushing Italians out of American history did not go unnoticed. I have no idea why Italians stay with the Democrat Party since that party has made its negative views of them plain. Of course, I also have no idea why Jewish people stick with Democrats since they welcome anti-Semites.

The phrase "The Governor has been widely praised for his response to COVID" is now permanently attached to Cuomo and will appear in any and all references to him. A sort of honorific. Doing this will transform the truth of Cuomo's response to COVID (a disaster, especially for the old and infirm) into a special award like a Nobel Peace Prize.

I didn't realize DeBlasio originated in The Peoples Republic of Cambridge. That explains a lot.

The Governor has been widely praised for his response to COVID.

Upon reading that I did a quick control-F search for "nursing home" and found near the bottom of the article:

The Cuomo administration had issued an advisory, on March 25th, that seniors who tested positive for the coronavirus or who reported symptoms couldn’t be turned away from being readmitted to nursing homes from hospitals. The rationale, as Cuomo and his health commissioner, Howard Zucker, later tried to explain, was that they needed to make hospital beds available for the predicted surge in covid cases—which never quite materialized. Nursing-home staff were to be allowed to keep working if they tested positive but were symptom-free. In the end, the virus passed through the nursing homes like “fire through dry grass,” as Cuomo himself put it. By mid-June, more than six thousand elderly nursing-home residents had died, constituting about a quarter of the state’s covid fatalities. (This number includes both confirmed and probable deaths, but does not include residents who died in hospitals.)

So at least they mentioned it I guess. But if the New Yorker were being more objective, the subheadline should have at least read "both widely praised and critized" in my opinion.

I have been looking at Sweden’s numbers, and the best guess I can come up with is that testing missed a shit ton of cases early on when their deaths climbed so quickly, and even though the current rise in cases looks the same at first glance, I suspect that this number is probably reasonably accurate this time, and deaths remain quite low, which is the hard number. Either that or treatment is orders of magnitude better. Treatment is better, and they killed off a lot of their old people already, but I think that cases, in reality, are lower this time around. But they are still climbing. I think these rises in cases we are seeing are real, but I think what happened this spring, when we didn’t have testing, was far worse, and we were just blind to it so comparisons are misleading.

This is interesting too

It’s now October. We are starting to get an evidence-based picture of how school reopenings and remote learning are going (those photos of hallways don’t count), and the evidence is pointing in one direction. Schools do not, in fact, appear to be major spreaders of COVID-19.

The Swedes admit that they made a big mistake in not protecting nursing homes initially, where many deaths occurred. That's one of the reasons why their per capita Covid death rate is 10 times that of neighboring Norway, which is similar in many ways.

Cuomo is as phony as DiBlasio. For all DiBlasio's many faults, having grown up with a single mother might even make him less phony than Cuomo.

The real street guys and tough guys don't have fathers who are governor. Andrew has a rudeness and roughness that he wants people to take for toughness. He was too declasse for his Kennedy in-laws, but that doesn't make him authentically street.

One thing in Andrew's favor: he's more authentic than his brother. Andrew got into Fordham and Albany Law fair and square. Chris got into Yale because his father was governor of New York and the expected Democratic presidential nominee.

Re: Tim in Vermont:

Limited testing capacity during the March/April time period is definitely a big factor basically everywhere except maybe Korea. In New York, confirmed cases make it look like they a daily peak of only around 12,000 cases, but they were seeing test positivity rates of 40-50%. If you guesstimate backwards from deaths (about 800), they might actually have had something more like 80,000 cases per day.

Even places that more or less contained the virus saw this. Tokyo had a peak in April of 206 cases. More recently, their July peak was 431 cases. But deaths were far higher in April, suggesting that the true number of cases was higher back in the spring. That said, experts in Japan have also raised the possibility that the current dominant strain in Japan is both more infectious and less lethal, although I have my doubts.

Italian-Americans are also a big part of "Fargo", season four on FX, but the Coen Brothers moved the action to fictionalized, gang-dominated Kansas City [MO, KS?].

While Deafy [U.S. Marshal Dick “Deafy” Wickware played by Timothy Olyphant] waits outside Joplin’s for [dishonest cop] Odis to complete an errand with the Faddas, our favorite Mormon marshal tells [gang members] Calamita and Gaetano about what happened when a group of Italians tried moving to Utah. The details are a bit fuzzy — it’s implied that the men were gangsters like the Faddas, but perhaps not — but the punchline is all that matters: that the gentlemen in question were lynched by Deafy and his pals, and dragged behind horses for several miles until they literally lost their heads. It’s an ugly tale, told in chipper fashion by a man munching on carrot sticks who prides himself on protecting his little corner of America from anyone not exactly like him.

This seemed totally out of left field. Not sure how, if at all, this series ties into anything 'Fargo' related, geographic or otherwise.

The beauty of Coen brothers' movies is a simple formula: Time after time people are given the opportunity to do the right thing, but they never do.

Often their mistakes are motivated by greed or lust, but in the end, they fuck up and suffer mostly foreseen consequences.

I watched the first episode of this season and I don't see that formula here...
