33.1% growth? Meaning, if it kept up for a year, the GDP would be 1/3 larger?

I guess that's what happens when you throw a couple trillion from the helicopter as a "covid assistance program".

I often wonder what news headlines and articles would look like if we had an independent press in this country. But it's pretty easy to predict the news when Joe, I mean Kamala, becomes president. The big, bad virus will make the front page about as often as Grandma's hemorrhoids.

According to the WSJ, "The third-quarter increase followed a 9% quarter-to-quarter decline in the second quarter, or a 31.4% annualized drop." So, a big decline was followed by a big increase. That's good, but not great.

Memorandum - my usual start for the daily news is even worse. Never in my lifetime has the press LIED about a President the way they've lied about Trump. Its been a very V-shaped recovery, which has slowed down in the last 6-7 weeks because of continuing restrictions in many industries across the US plus the global effects (which is why Boeing is in trouble).

And then there are many US states where restrictions are still more severe, like California. You can get an idea of this from the state unemployment rates, deficient as they are.

Biden, like all his other actions, has responded to CV-19 in the strangest, stupidest manner. He attacked Trump for stopping Travel to China and Europe. Then had nothing of value to say, then started demanding everyone wear a mask. Then, backed off Federal mandated masks, and now seemingly, is back demanding a Federal Mask mandate.

Like Newsome, and the Michigan Airhead Governor, he's a 'Lets lock it all down forever" guy, and that's his "plan". Hysteria. He's also a physical coward. That's why he's always in the basement or had people standing inside circles so he can't be infected. Trump meanwhile, showed immense courage and fortitude in facing the illness.

Take away the Covid restrictions and the US will recover very quickly and nearly fully, held back by global and structural issues such as collapsed industries that will take longer to recover, if they ever will. Tourism and movie theaters for instance.

I know what I'm seeing on the national numbers for positive tests. There's a spike all right. But is it a real spike, or a... reporting artifact? We saw one of those back in early June, when there was an 'adjustment' on cases and deaths. I didn't see the same with local state numbers.

I know what I'm seeing on the state numbers. Locally, we haven't had any real spikes in positive test numbers. They're well within what I've seen as 'normal' bounds for the last couple of months.

Nationwide - deaths? Average per day (Mon-Thurs) last week nationwide was 830. This week, same period? 831.

Statewide in Georgia? Average per day (Mon-Thurs) last week was 31. This week, same period? 24.

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to distrust the 'positive test' numbers nationwide. Death numbers are one thing - but positive tests can be inflated, especially if there's a politicial advantage to do so.

I've seen articles tracing the phrase to the UN's early years in 1945 or so.

The new New Zealand PM even used it a couple weeks ago in her inaugural address.

Joe Biden can't even come up with an original campaign slogan but has to plagiarize one from the UN.

Anytime you want to make Covid look bad, you just site cases, and when you want to be more accurate, you use deaths.

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand what you did there.

Ivor Cummins uses the expression casedemic.

Since about May, when the epidemic ended, we have been in a casedemic. In other words, we have a lot of "cases", but few people are dying.

Mike Sylwester said...

In retrospect, President Trump should have explained to the public months ago that COVID epidemics are seasonal and that the COVID-19 epidemic was not an exception.

There are biological reasons why such epidemics are seasonal.

Trump should have advocated publicly that most COVID-related restrictions should have been removed in May. All the rules about masks, social distancing, group events, and so forth should have been removed.

The public should have relaxed through the summer and early fall.

Instead, we have been subjected to a continual, senseless hysteria that is significantly affecting the US elections.

You can't knee-jerk oppose everything the man does, and then claim that he could have gotten everyone to follow him. He could not, primarily because of you and your TDS.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ Mike Sylvester Since about May, when the epidemic ended, we have been in a casedemic. In other words, we have a lot of "cases", but few people are dying.

I tried to explain this to one of my math challenged liberal friends.

The more you test for something (Covid) the more instances (cases) you will find. HOWEVER, you have to look at the ratios of instances (cases) and outcomes.

If you have 100 cases and 10 outcomes (deaths)...yeah...that is pretty high 10%

If you test more and find that you have 1000 cases and 10 outcomes....the percentage looks pretty good. 1%

A 1% chance of death from Covid. Not bad.

Test MORE and you get more cases which the left wants to scream about. But ....you WANT more cases to find out what the actual severity of the something (Covid) is.

Then if you are scientific minded you will consider that there are probably many more Cases outside of the test pool that would even further lower the % of deaths.

If you think about it....this Covid paranoia is really quite unfounded.

stevew said...

@DBQ: last night on the local news (Boston, MA) they reported, breathlessly and with their hair on fire, that the positive test rate is now 1.7%, twice the rate of September!!!!!! What they didn't mention is that the rate in June/July was 10x that or more.
