"Completely flabbergasted that they would choose a white American lyric poet. It doesn’t make sense. Now my street is covered with journalists."

"People keep telling me how humble I am. I’m not humble. But I thought, I come from a country that is not thought fondly of now, and I’m white, and we’ve had all the prizes. So it seemed to be extremely unlikely that I would ever have this particular event to deal with in my life...."

Said Louise Glück, who just won the Nobel Prize for Literature today, quote in "'I Was Unprepared': Louise Glück on Poetry, Aging and a Surprise Nobel Prize."

You can listen to her read her work here:

Just accept the damn prize and say thank you.

With her attitude and guilt, she doesn't deserve the honor. She can go eat a bag of dicks.

What a sad mental poverty. I remember reading Glueck when I was a wee undergrad. Someone who's been writing published poetry for ... 35? ... years should expect and anticipate recognition.

Diversity dogma, not limited to racism, color supremacism denies individual dignity, denies, individual conscience, denies intrinsic value, normalizes color blocs, color quotas, and affirmative discrimination breeds adversity. Unfortunately, structural (e.g. generational) diversity is a progressive condition. They need to lose their Pro-Choice quasi-religion ("ethics").

How progressive to expect that Nobel Prizes are based on your skin color and what country you come from.

Ah the utter shame of being an American--from a country that's not thought of all that fondly now. Well I don't want to read any poems by shameful poets---so there is that.

So tired of the apology tour and concept of privilege or whiteness as something to be ashamed of or feel guilty about.

Fell free to decline the award or give it back.

Twas the umlaut what put her over the top...

She can always decline it and then the committee can select a non-white non-American non-lyric poet instead.

I don't understand why someone can't just say thank you, this is a wonderful honor, I am grateful and amazed to be recognized in this way. Why does everyone feel the need to proclaim devotion to the current wokeness dogma. It's so incredibly fake, phooey, booey, phony baloney, boney maroney, give me a break, shut up and go away already! There's some lyric poetry for you Louise.

She may be a brilliant poet but she's not very smart. She's flabbergasted that words can be appreciated on their own. Propaganda has addled her mind.

Oh for crying out loud. My whiteness eclipses my worthiness. I'm a victim, too!

Repeal the 19th amendment.

Jesus Christ. Shut the fuck up, lady. I’ve never heard of you. Be glad you won a prize.

She didn’t think she’d win because of the color of her skin.
Is it really THAT hard to notice the problem with that?

John Cunningham said...

I'm with Doug. Comrade Gluck should say, I decline this, all glory to Comrade Stalin and the Politburo. And eat a bag of dicks.

What angst she must live with every day, being an American. And being white. Oh if only she could have been a poor starving Cambodian with a wee bit of African blood.

At least she's a woman. (does she consider herself a woman?). She can be grateful she's not a man. That would have completed the unholy trinity.

Can I say 'trinity'? Is that still allowed?

A rare literature prize to a person I might have read. Maybe, 1 or 2 poems sounded somewhat familiar.

welp. now I can promptly forget about her again. Her poems are pretty forgettable, but modern poetry is generally just hacked bits of prose put in a un-proselike format.

"You can listen to her read her work here..."

I come from a country that is not thought fondly of now, and I’m white, so- no.

As soon as she began reading, I was done. I don't understand why poets think they need to read in that sing-songy breathless voice. I've attended many poetry readings and listened to too many variations on the same song. I prefer to read the written word.

Well give it back, crawl on your knees across the stage and beg forgiveness for your very existence. Then take tow aspirin.....White person....

Maybe she should just kill herself and make room for more woke people of color.

I won't miss her.

I made the mistake of clicking on the video.

Not to my taste, and her voice is world-class annoying...she should thank Johannes Gutenberg every damn day.

What's wrong with 'There once was girl from Nantucket?'

Helpful Hint. Those “folks” who don’t think fondly of us still need our Army, Navy and Air Force to fondly protect their sorry behinds. Reality intrudes.

Saying that the only way people of color can win is to make sure that no whites compete is one of the most racist ideas I have heard in a long time. And that is what she is saying.

So, a conventional American prog.

Could it be that lit connoisseurs abroad haven't completely bought into the BLM thing yet?

Give it time.

Meanwhile, she should demand to transfer her prize to the Proust of the Zulus.

The idea that our country needs to be thought of fondly is bizarre to me.
The NATO allies aren't supposed to be "fond" of the US today. Those nations are supposed to devote a stated percentage of their GDP to mutual defense, and now they are closer to those agreed upon goals than they were four years ago, when supposedly they were "fond" of Obama and Biden.

Bob Dylan set a high bar for weird responses to winning Nobel Prize for Literature.

rcocean said...

I'm flabbergasted too, but for different reasons. Good that she acknowledges that the Nobel Prize is no longer given based on literary merit or even popularity, but simply *who* you are. She's white, but she's also female, Jewish, and Left-wing. So, 3 pokeman points for her.

Maybe if she could sing her poems, and play the guitar, she'd be better known.

Joe Smith said...

"She's white, but she's also female, Jewish..."

Lefties and Democrats hate the Jews. The lefty Jews (Schumer, Nadler, et al) hate themselves...

Want proof? Just look at how Jews are being silenced in NYC.

Oy.

The best reaction to winning the Nobel Prize was from Doris Lessing.

Shame of what color you were born is called "White Privilege" So lucky.

Unless they need saved from poverty, disease, war, or tyranny. Then who do you call? Who will come?

Have you ever noticed how people tend to like those they don't need anything from, and resent those they need, like parents, cops, bosses, etc. I understand the psychology, but not the morality.

In another time, another place, same ideological bent, it was called "Jew Privilege"... one step forward, two steps backward.

The Physics and Chemistry Prizes also went to women. Just this year there seems to be a sudden flowering of women prodigies. There might also be a tilt towards women on the part of the Nobel committee. Maybe Kamala can win the Peace Prize. Make all the winners this year women. That will be a terrific forward step in the empowerment of women.....They should play the national anthem right before the winner takes the stage. That would give Louise an opportunity to take the knee.

I would award rehajm the Nobel Prize for comments on this post, but I have no idea of his, her or they's race, nationality, or gender.

I used to like Gluck enough to buy her early books. But when she went politicial, she became tedious. She's very good on irises, crap on geopolitics.

At least they stopped handing Nobels to French poets. The French cannot and never have been able to write poetry.

flabbergasted that they would choose a white....

She isn't flabbergasted that SHE was chosen. She was flabbergasted that a WHITE person was chosen...

So she just might think her work was worthy absent her pale skin?

So she rejects merit as a measure? So she's a racist? So she thinks minorities need a boost up deserved or not?

These people, especially those that have achieved on their own merits, disgust me.
