What jumped out at me in the story was the small size of the crowd of rioters -- about 200 people. Not a problem to control for any competent government interested in exercising control.

I have family that lives in Portland and their breezy dismissal this is a real problem is growing into exasperation as there is a general sense things are spinning out of control.
It's now common to check your apps in the morning to see if a bridge has been closed, if the train has been delayed due to a bomb threat or some other jackassery. It's becoming a real drag to live there if you have any business to do in the CBD. That mayhem has crossed the river and is now infecting some neighborhoods.
Another friend there said it was like living in a city where "Critical Mass" gets the run of the streets every other day. That's too bad as I like Portland a lot and think no one needs to live this way.

Doubtful. All of the footage and info/history of the shooter is he's an unstable, tweeker. He will most likely commit suicide than turn himself in or allowed to get caught. I had seen interviews with him on youtube and he doesn't look like he's that well put together.
Whatever we think of the authorities in Portland, they don't want to attract more attention from Trump or more demonstrations from Proud Boys and other "right wing" parades protesting the death of a martyr. Which is exactly what they would get if they let the guy go or give him a slap on the wrist. The shooter will be an easy scapegoat to throw under the bus if they capture him alive.

I hated it- a mix of white trash dead-ender kids, uppity upper middles in Lake Oswego, biker gangs, arians, gun nuts, a smattering LA street gang bandanas. My west coast relatives have for years touted Portland as some kind of urban nirvana, the way kids from the sticks in the East rave about New York. Recently they've come to adopt my way of thinking...

I've always hated Portland (no offense intended to most of those who live there). I had several job sites there in the late '90s and was always stuck in nasty, dirty, smelly parts of town with a bunch of drunks and layabouts - a lot like Pioneer Square in Seattle now, based on what I've seen there on my last several visits. Plus, the non-drunk non-layabout population would do stupid things like that giant ribbon they tied around part of downtown in the W era, declaring it to be a hate-free zone or something like that. It was a curious mixture of civic breakdown and feel-good proggie lameness.
It doesn't seem that much has changed, except that perhaps the layabouts are now also progs and are in the ascendant.
Imagine, for a moment, if these "protestors" (rioters) were actual Trump supporters, or ordinary people who support the police....

I am afraid that most of you have the wrong take on Wheeler. There are no doubt aspects of the situation in Portland that Wheeler finds unsatisfactory, but on the whole, he is getting exactly what he wants. He is one of them.

Things sometimes get carried away at block parties when folks get in the "swring" of things. When Reinohl says he is against fascists, all I can think of is that in 1945 some of the captured Nazis (real Nazis, as in German officials of the Third Reich) took offense at being called Fascists. The difference between Naziism and Italian Fascism was very important and a matter of pride to them.
The hard Left in the country are as close to Nazis as you will ever find. They believe with religious intensity that race is immutable, some races are evil and must be dealt with harshly, the sins of some members of a race are visited on them all and forever, and so on. President Trump is undermining Mayor Wheeler rather than supporting him, which Is playing well with his Portland-hating base who are enjoying the show on Fox News.

Little League, eh?
Did any enterprising reporter bother to check the schedule? Because it smelled like a lie to me, instantly. And as one editor I worked for as a young reporter advised me back in the day, "If your mother says she loves you, check it out."
Now, I coached Little League for about seven years and we were normally done with the regular season by early June. Only the playoffs and the All-Star types played into July, if that.
And these days, the game schedules are usually on the Internet.
Here's the SouthWest Portland Little League schedule for last year. The summer baseball schedule was over after the first weekend of July. It's exactly the same timeline I remember.

So they're not even playing, and even if they were, they wouldn't be playing now.
All the neighboring leagues are going to be on roughly the same timeline, so they can play playoff games against each other immediately after the regular season, and give their top teams a chance at the LLWS in Cooperstown.
She's a girl, so I checked out the softball schedule, too. They also close out in the early summer, if they play at all.
Fall ball starts in early September, on the weekends. So that doesn't work, either.
So, what game are we talking about here, exactly?

Is the perp in custody? This statement indicates that the mayor’s staff is in communication with him and is spreading pre trial talking points. The last news I saw was that no arrest has been made. Is the mayor in communication with a fugitive?
Its unclear at even this late date if Michael Forest Reinoehl, 48 has been brought in for questioning yet. Last time i checked they were just calling him a "person of interest". He has been identified by an eyewitness as being the shooter. We have fuzzy cell phone footage of him being by the victim then running away at a high rate of speed. Where is he now?
I think Reinoehl is already teaching his daughter the dark arts of street brawling by keeping a baseball bat and making sure you have a catchers mit in the trunk in case you are pulled over. There is no reason a child should be at a riot holding a baseball bat unless she plans to hit someone. It just isn't plausible. If she was playing at a game why didn't she just leave it in her dad's car after the game? Did she walk from her game to the "protest"?

-- If the man claims, "someone sprayed mace at me [a defensive, non-lethal], and I escalated to an offensive, lethal weapon," his self defense claim FAILS. The next question will be: Why were you close enough to this man for long enough for him to draw and deploy mace against you? You did not attempt to add distance (from the video we can see, he does not attempt to de-escalate at all!)
The person who was shot may have been using a defensive non-lethal, conveniently, my understanding is the guy did not surrender immediately so this claim could be tested. But, even if he WAS, escalating to lethal force will fail your self-defense claim.

So...a hypothetical but unproven use of mace, a non-lethal weapon, justifies killing the person who employs it.
And...how do you explain what was clearly heard on tape, about finding a Trump supporter, just before the fatal shots?

Watching poor old Juan Williams on The Five--yesterday, I think, he was getting huffy that nobody else assumed that Rittenhouse was 1) far right and 2) guilty, and let the cat out of the bag: Rittenhouse was an underage "cop-loving kid." (Check the transcript--it was "cop-loving" something in the same dismissive tone I used to hear about "n-word-lovers.")

I feel like most people talking about self-defense haven't even done the most basic level of reading on it (something like this: https://www.useofforce.us/3aojp/)
The man from the blurry video who shot the Patriot Prayer guy is going to have a hard time on a lot of this.
We'll never know if the man had the ability to threaten the guy; he disappeared for, what, a day or two or more now? We'll never know for sure if he was attacked with mace or some other irritant.
There's a clear argument the now dead man had the opportunity to attack... but it isn't clear whether he took it (or if he did, he did it unprovoked or as the aggressor.)
The shooter is obviously not in jeopardy; he makes his shot cleanly after having his target announced to him. He did not feel so threatened as to retreat from the man at first; he escalated. He did not turn himself in to the police, so he was not worried the area he was in was dangerous. He, in fact, does not act like a man who is afraid at all.
The man takes no visible signs of preclusion, in fact drawing as soon as a target is called to him.
This is an incredibly weak claim of self-defense, and the few points that the shooter COULD have raised (he sprayed me with an unknown substance) are no longer provable.
I feel I need to clarify my former remarks. Yes, my time in Portland in years past was spent largely in the vicinity of lots of drunks and layabouts - but they did no harm to me, only to themselves (and property values). Plenty of drunks, at least, in my family tree, though few layabouts. And I am very sympathetic to addicts of any stripe who try to change their stars - it's a sometimes terrible, always challenging uphill battle, no matter what help society provides.
But now, the most obvious change I see from what I'm reading is that the miscreants of Portland mean normal people great harm.
Imagine America, with its polarization and misinformation, if the vote tally swings wildly toward Joe Biden and Trump loses days later as the mail ballots are counted.
There will be blood.
