No mask is good enough to stop the virus itself, it and all other viruses are too small. Which is ok, because you're not going to get sick by inhaling a virus, or even dozens of the virus, unless you are significantly immune compromised.
The masks do a good job of stopping the water (or, more likely, saliva) droplets carrying thousands of copies of the virus. Those are what would get you sick. The masks do an even better job of stopping the virus-laden drops leaving your mouth.

Comparing Trump to Castro, or any other autocratic leader, is so patently stupid. Even if Trump had such ambitions, we have pretty robust systems in place to guard against it. The administration has accepted every court battle they've lost. Not exactly standard autocratic practice.
That said, the attack on Jill Biden for her state visit to Cuba when the Obama administration was pursuing rapprochement is ridiculously over-the-top. It castigates Biden for appearing in a tourism commercial because it will improve the income of the regime. This at a time when "Made in China" is ubiquitous. The complaints about Cuban human rights abuses sound especially cynical given our enthusiastic support for several autocratic regimes that use torture, execution, and other police state tactics to maintain power.
Normalization with Cuba is long past due. We're much likelier to enable change in Cuba with normal diplomatic relations than by pandering to a bunch of bitter old refugees in South Florida.

I will up the ante:
The shocking full-frontal MORON who heads the CDC said today that he believed masks were better preventatives against covid than any vaccine----even BEFORE the efficacy of any vaccine has been tested!!!
Would this solid-gold electrostatic ASSHOLE , had he been head of any CDC back in the 1950's, have advised people that taking the Salk (and later Sabin) vaccines against polio were deluding themselves that it might be better than doing...nothing at all??
Trump reportedly had a conversation with this bozo today. Let's hope that the thrust was, "You need to spend more time with your family".
I've never seen Wagner's The Ring in its entirety, nor has anyone I ever met. Despite this, it seems to have been the opera with the most influence on pop culture of all time. Tolkien's LOTR was obviously influenced by it. So also was Star Wars and even Gone With The Wind (Gotterdammerung). There was a kind of Brunhilde and Siegfried vibe with Daenerys and Jon Snow in GOT. In both works, the aunt-nephew relationship was consummated and did not end happily. (Although Brunhilde inspired the Nazis, she did not actually become one the way Daenerys did.) So there you have it. LOTR, Star Wars, GWTW, and GOT all borrowing from Wagner's mythology. Can you name any other work you haven't seen that has had such a profound effect on all the works that you have seen.......Wagner was explicitly anti-Semitic in The Ring. That evil dwarf, Alberich, is meant to be viewed as Jewish. But here's the kicker. Herzl, the founder of Zionism, saw The Ring and dreamed of founding a Jewish state. Wagner inspired both Hitler and Herzl. That's the kind of thing that would melt down the computer on the Enterprise. (I don't think Star Trek was influenced by Wagner. Star Trek's the exception.)....The Ring is no doubt one of the most influential works of art ever created. I still don't want to see it. Too heavy. I prefer to have my world views shaped by Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies.
Yes, that Fox thing with Gingrich where they told him not to mention Soros in re his quite open buying of DA's - that bit was way, way more interesting than the rest of the interview. And the shut up orders came from on high, as the Fox crew seemed sheepish, disturbed. Gingrich was calm but clearly astounded.
Something is up, obviously. Somebody got bought? Arm's twisted? Who? How? Why? This is traditional material for a curious and hungry journalist. There are scoops there.
Since it's Fox it is likely to be extremely important.
And as usual, everything is a conspiracy of course, and only occasionally do we get a peek behind the curtain, usually inadvertently. This was one.
It is also wide open material for Trump. Let's see if he pushes it.
I had already recorded my thoughts about Biden's speech and Covid-related softball press conference. I thought that Biden was in fine form even if talking stupid shit and I had ginned up a really snarky post.
Then I watched Trump's press conference and I thought he was hitting homers to all fields. Well, that was a 15-minute snark-writing rant that was quickly overtaken by events.
I like the part about military logistics delivering the vaccines country-wide. Maybe there could be an elephant walk of the first C-130s taking the medicine to the country. Maybe there could be NG helos to take it further into the rural districts. Man, I wish I was the Creative Director on this distribution.
Time to revisit Althouse commentariat from 4 years ago post Brexit vote:
All Althouse lefties/LLR-lefties: Clean Brexit will never happen and cannot happen given treaty obligations
All Althouse conservatives: BS. The UK has all the leverage and Trump in their corner.
As of this week, the "conservative" interpretation of Scott Adams' "One Movie-Two Screens: prediction accuracy" framework of who is reality-based and who is not once again delivers the same answer as always: the conservatives.
The democraticals/LLR-lefties/anti-Brexiteers last and final hope: the Harris-Biden ticket wins.
Just today, Joe Biden's Teleprompter announced a Harris-Biden Administration would not give any trade deals to the UK if the UK backs away from The Good Friday Agreement...which was the Theresa May/Mitt Romney-like ploy to keep the UK completely wed to the EU courts of justice and all other EU statutes and rules.
Yesterday the head of the CDC downplayed the overall value and widespread availability of a Covid-19 vaccine, and stumbled about when trying to promote mask wearing during the wait. He did this to set expectations very low about possible vaccines, expectations that are very likely to be exceeded. Or he's joined the Biden/Democrat anti-vaxer bandwagon and the attacks on anti-science Trump. I saw on FoxNews that Biden is now referring to it as "Trump's vaccine". Suspect that a not insignificant number of voters are nodding their heads in agreement.
I am so sorry stevew, that a simple request like being asked to wear cheap, simple, and effective masks is causing you so much emotional distress that you have to post about it every day. I never post on masks unless in response to a post like yours. You guys bring masks up the same way liberals bring up Trump all the time, apropos of nothing.
I think that the masks remind you that the pandemic is real, and you would rather live in denial of that simple fact.
buwaya... In similar fashion, media ignored the Secretary of State Initiative wherin Soros funded the campaigns of counters/certifiers of ballots in strategic states.
Several points on "masks". The efficacy of masks has been "established " in studies where trained medical practitioners have been evaluated in clinical settings. They've used "surgical " masks, not those cheesedick chicom kleenexes that veterinarians use. I've watched people entering buildings closely for some time now, and their mask handling is atrocious. Fresh masks every time? I've got a bridge for ya. Try to keep those chicom masks adjusted? Again, watch the public. Why are there no "HazMat" disposals required for those virus laden worn masks? If you're at risk or scared wear one. YOU are responsible for you.
Excess deaths turned negative last week per CDC. Have been trending that way for several weeks. Given that a high percentage of covid deaths are among very old people with more than one co-morbidity, and many occur among people already in terminal or managed care situations, this supports my suspicion that covid pulls deaths forward maybe more than creates new deaths that would not have naturally occurred.
Been reading some articles lately that suggest that the second wave is already occurring in Europe and is significantly milder than the first wave in terms of both hospitalizations and deaths.
It is one thing for the MSM to ignore a story. It is something else to tell an eminent elder statesman, being interviewed in public, that a certain line of inquiry is banned.
A surgical mask is not an N95 mask, it’s a simple mask. If your argument is that you won’t wear one because you are too stupid to manage it, I can’t argue with you there. Masks work in a lab, they work when tried in a hospital setting, and observational studies show that, unsurprisingly, they work in the larger world, even though double blind studies are impossible, they work in the larger world even without complete compliance and with the problems you cite, which are second order. It’s just paltering from you.
"If you're at risk or scared wear one. YOU are responsible for you.”
This is the kind of callousness that Harris was talking about, and it’s not lost on people, people who vote. I don’t get either why you are so emotional about it. You should think about that. Its cargo cult thinking. “Get rid of the masks and the pandemic will magically go away.” It’s ok, magical thinking has been around in humans since the Neanderthals walked the Earth at least, I am sure. We can’t expect it to disappear altogether.
“Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. At best, he is a tolerable subhuman who has learned to wear his shoes, bathe, and not make messes in the house.” - Robert Heinlein
I used to think that the above quote was a bit harsh.
“My eldest posted today on Facebook: The CDC says Wildfire smoke microns are 2.6 in size and the cdc says masks dont protect you from the smoke...so how are they protecting from the virus which is much much smaller .06 -.14 ...the mask is a joke”
A note for everyone dealing with those pesky fires. I bought a Honeywell HEPA filter last year, at the urging of a good friend in N ID. Two HEPA filters, one on each floor, cleans the air in his >5k sq ft house. He also has them in his house in Spokane, where the smoke has been exceeding 400 µg/m3 in air quality this week. Our house here is smaller, and we keep the upstairs closed, when it is just the two of us. So one works just fine. The result is that the air inside the house is healthy, while that outside can be in the hazardous range. Last year, I didn’t get the HEPA filter until most of the smoke was gone from the air. They sell out quickly in the E WA, N ID, and W MT areas where we shop. But that just meant that it was ready when I needed it this year.
Masks work in a lab, they work when tried in a hospital setting, and observational studies show that, unsurprisingly, they work in the larger world,
I wore masks in surgery for 50 years. They filter out bacteria, which was the purpose. Nobody really believes they filter out viruses. The original term for viruses was "filterable virus" because filters that stopped bacteria did not stop viruses. There is some propaganda around that the SARS-2 virus has "static electricity" that causes it to stick to the mask but I believe that is BS.
Now, if you are coughing or sick, a mask is good but for healthy people it is propaganda.
buwaya said... It is one thing for the MSM to ignore a story. It is something else to tell an eminent elder statesman, being interviewed in public, that a certain line of inquiry is banned.
At least it creates a "Streisand Effect," as probably more people are talking about it. I have been increasingly suspicious of Fox News.
"President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that banned training sessions covering “Critical Race Theory.” The order went into effect right away.
However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided to #Resist and move forward with planned struggle sessions for its employees."
buwaya: "Yes, that Fox thing with Gingrich where they told him not to mention Soros in re his quite open buying of DA's - that bit was way, way more interesting than the rest of the interview. Lefty hack coup-participant Marie Harf was downright giddy. You could see that even she was surprised (then absolutely delighted) to see the Soros mention slapped down.
I'm thinking the hand of Paul Ryan and others are moving more forcefully within the Fox "news"/daytime commentary side of the house now.
There is no way Fox leadership can get Tucker/Hannity/Laura to back off (as Tucker's essentially declaration of independence last night clearly signalled), but I would not be surprised if, after the election, when its clear the democraticals lost but are trying to "discover votes"/lawfare their way to victory for months after the election, that the Fox leadership moves against their primetime lineup to coincide with a full spectrum Big Tech/legacy media censoring of Trump and all his supporters.
"Normalization with Cuba is long past due." No it's not. Let them change to accommodate the modern civilized world. The best and the brightest have left Cuba.
"BTW, if I can smell a gal’s perfume when she walks by, is my mask gonna work against the virus?"
No. Your mask is not going to work against the virus. But it's polite to wear it anyway, if you are going to be around people who can't avoid you because they are working for a living. Many of them buy into the government lies, and there is no point in frightening them.

Sixty percent of business closures due to coronavirus are now permanent. The US way overreacted.

The overweight person with the virus catcher on his chin who is head of the CDC did a very good impression of Joe Biden today with his statements on masks: they are the best protection; oops rewind the teleprompter I mean vaccines, wait vaccines and masks, no make that vaccines, masks, and distancing... More tomorrow...but don't watch Fox news at 7 PM
********************

Rehajm,
Yes, that Fox thing with Gingrich where they told him not to mention Soros in re his quite open buying of DA's - that bit was way, way more interesting than the rest of the interview.
Biden's 'tell': when he says "Look--", he's mentally choking

Just a tip for all you Quartermasters running the Ladies Dept, 2nd Fl.

Let's hope so.
It is one thing for the MSM to ignore a story.

The NumPy team have a paper in this week's Nature. I'm lead author :)
Congrats!

Sex, money and/or invitations to Davos, or all three. Take your pick.

Followup to CDC idiot and masks. CDC really like Critical Race Theory, believing race is a disease?

No. Your mask is not going to work against the virus. But it's polite to wear it anyway, if you are going to be around people who can't avoid you because they are working for a living. Many of them buy into the government lies, and there is no point in frightening them.
