Just tried to watch the movie Hostiles, and it wasn’t a bad. movie for a while, making its moral points about the genocide we inflicted on the western Indians through drama, fair enough. Then there is a scene where they sit down at the dinner table in town and some woman starts on an rant that seemed like it came right out of Bette Middler’s mouth on Twitter. Who needs to listen to that kind of shit? The whole point of drama is to make your points without lectures. Anyway, I clicked it off. I would rather watch High Plains Drifter, or The Unforgiven, or even The Hateful Eight. It’s like they couldn’t resist putting a woman up there to lecture us men on stuff that everybody knows is obviously true anyway. At least when Crash did one of his soliloquies in Bull Durham, it was kind of entertaining and self deprecating in a way. Maybe that’s the problem with the woman’s rant, there was no self depreciation, just a projection of the certainty of her moral superiority and her seeming conviction that none of the stupid men in the room could understand her obvious point.

Once again, Canada working to get around protections Trump created for American workers, just like they did laundering dumped Chinese steel into the US market.

For those of you who read into foreign election results for trends.

New Brunswick voters elected a majority Progressive Conservative government on Monday, concluding a highly unusual election race — the first in Canada since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What did the losers say?

"As the Tories secured their majority win on Monday, Coon [Green Party] said the electoral system has to be changed.”

Of course it does, the lefties lost.

The Sunday Night Football clash between the Rams and the Cowboys was supposed to halt the ratings crash the NFL has experienced so far in the 2020 season. Spoiler alert, it most certainly did not halt the ratings crash.According to DEADLINE Hollywood, ratings for NBC’s only weekly NFL game, were down a shocking 28%. Putting on the two teams with big national followings, SNF snared a 4.7 in early ratings among adults 18-49 and 14.81 million viewers last night. In numbers certain to change, that’s a fall of 28% in the ratings and a hard decline of 23% in sets of eyeballs from what the September 8, 2019 - Brietbart

I really wish they hadn’t turned the NFL into a ... err, political football. But they did.

Left the midwest at the exact start of Covid-tocia. I mean my timing couldn't have been worse. In any event we'd sold our place, so we had to go. And we wanted to. In our transit west we had to stop for a winter storm. When we got to our new home, the disease had messed up everything from plumbers to movers. Then we had and earthquake - I think maybe the strongest in Idaho's recorded history. Then the shutdowns got more aggressive and most things became tougher.

But at least we had great weather! Now, the fires in California and Oregon are punishing our air quality index, so it's well in to the 100+ range.

Even with all that it's rare that I crave a midwest moment, but your great photo (among others) does show that your air is better than ours for now.

Not to make light of it. Those fires are a big bad deal. Let's all pray for the strength required to get through those things for the people devastated by them. Scary, frustrating stuff that must be. I'm merely inconvenienced. But oh, a Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa September evening is a pretty nice thing.

Trump negotiates from strength, not weakness. Good to have in a President. Reagan was also like that. Neither gave away free shit and hoped you'd be grateful.

Sounds like even Kamala Harris doesn't believe Joe Biden is long for this world.

She talked about a "Harris Administration....along with Joe Biden" at an even today.

A thread that more or less aligns with my thinking on the whole catastrophic overreaction to COVID, and Trump's only real failure with regard to COVID, ceding the field to the idiots and liars in the media.

One of my good friends and golf buddy has passed away. We feared something was wrong this morning when he didn't show for our tee time. He was always the first to the course to warm up on the range. We tried to call but it kept going straight to voicemail and he wasn't returning our calls. After the round, the other friend who played this morning went to his house to check up on him. There were cops in the driveway. They told him he had probably passed away yesterday. Lived alone with no family here in California. His wife had passed in her sleep over 10 years ago.

Great guy, really nice. Kind of a grumpy personality, but in a very endearing way. And still a good player for his age (72). His last text to me a few days ago was "see you on Monday".

I will really miss him. RIP my friend.

I saw a picture of the female deputy who was shot in Compton. She is covered in blood and giving first aid to her partner. She looks as though she might be Hispanic. If she is, and the shooter is black, then the Dumbocrats could find themselves in a serious mess.

Ab8. Like Love Potion #9, interesting if true:

NY Post September 14, 2020 | 9:10pm

Scientists discover antibody that ‘neutralizes’ virus that causes coronavirus

'...The antibody component is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, and has been used to create the drug Ab8, shared in the report published by the researchers in the journal Cell on Monday. The drug is seen as a potential preventative against SARS-CoV-2.

According to the report, the drug has been “highly effective in preventing and treating” the SARS-CoV-2 infections in mice and hamsters during tests. The drug also reportedly does not bind to human cells, which suggests it will not have negative side-effects in people.

“Ab8 not only has potential as therapy for COVID-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections,” said co-author John Mellors, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Pitt and UPMC. “Antibodies of larger size have worked against other infectious diseases and have been well-tolerated, giving us hope that it could be an effective treatment for patients with COVID-19 and for protection of those who have never had the infection and are not immune.”...'

Of course, the Chinese, Russians, Iranians, etc are now very hard at work trying to steal the recipe for making Ab8.

Another doctor admits what many of us here were saying in March- the consequences of lockdowns would be worse than the negative health effects of covid...

From a medical perspective I am not seeing an impact from COVID on the ground. What I am seeing is delayed diagnoses for other conditions – breast cancer, skin cancer in young people, an onslaught of anxiety and depression, an increase in loneliness in the elderly, recently a fractured humerus in an elderly lady that has been like that for months as she was afraid to go outside.

Climate change has a name:

Portland Police arrested a man today suspected of starting a brush fire using a Molotov cocktail. Firefighters extinguished the grass fire before it could spread further. Domingo Lopez Jr., 45, was arrested. He was quickly released without bail

Thirty percent of Jews now favor Trump versus 27 percent who voted for him in 2016. This according to a poll by the Jewish Electorate Institute. Not a big number, and not likely to swing any states to Trump, but Blacks and Hispanics are also polling higher for Trump.

Makes you wonder ...

Interesting article at Tablet:

"The younger academic generation is in no mood to argue about social reality; it is in the mood to assert morality. While the assertion “it is all about power” was meant to induce radical skepticism, a new generation has turned it into a moral certainty. And while the appeal to subjectivism—tell your story—as an attack on objectivity was meant to bring other experiences into the discussion, subjectivism has now become the be-all for a new generation which has adopted its own distinctive form of argument in which grievance is mixed with aggression and narcissism... It is not that the progressive boomers didn’t feel moral about their ideas; it’s just that the younger generation seems to have zoomed in only on the moral claims of the previous progressivism."

Mound always makes me think of the Round Mound of Rebound.

Yesterday I heard Biden say science was very angry with Trump, and with us for electing Trump, so there are fires. Wildfires, arson fires, looter/riot fires, it's all about our pissing off science. Science is scary when it's angry.

I feel bad for those who want to vote with their heads. Our politics is visceral. It's in your gut: your head might say the police could use some reform, especially the classic issue of unions preventing accountability for poor performers. But when the adults in the room are screaming about defunding the police, my gut say shut up. This isn't an election to think your way through to a proper choice. It's in the gut, like when a campaign announces itself to the world as based on a great big debunked lie. Some might say that sticks in the craw, but actually it hits you in the gut.

We are around 125 or so here in NW MT. Got a Honeywell HEPA filter last year from Home Depot, and it does a really god job. Partner finds the noise aggravating, but it does seem to have kept the smoke from irritating her eyes. Spokane is running about 325, about where we were here last year. Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint, Moscow, and Lewiston are running about 100 points lower. Surprising, given how close CDA is to Spokane. The really bad stuff looks to be NE of Portland and NW of Spokane. That probably means that Spokane, then CDAand Sandpoint, then maybe here, are going to get worse. Fire at the bottom of Lake Pend Orielle isn’t being fought because of the visibility. It appears to have been the result of an illegal camp fire. Authorities have pictures of the party and their boat, so ultimately expect an arrest. Sometimes they can fight fires with night vision equipment. But that fire is just East of 2k+ Foot cliffs, and the slope there appears better than 45 degrees.
