"Look. Come on, man. I know you're trying to goad me, but I mean, I'm so forward looking to have an opportunity to sit with the President or stand with the President and debate."

Joe Biden doesn't need a tell-an-elephant-from-a-lion test! Just watch him, listen to him and judge.

Now, he did say "I'm so forward looking to have an opportunity" instead of "I'm so looking forward to having an opportunity," but it's speech, man. Talking is what it is. Trump makes his own mistakes.

ADDED: "Yo, Semites" is hilarious, but think more deeply about it. It means that Trump has very little interest in our national parks. I'd like someone to ask him if he has ever, on his own, outside of any political or business reason, traveled through the great landscapes of America. Has he ever hiked in Zion or the Badlands or Glacier? Has he seen the sunrise in Bryce Canyon? Which parks has he visited it? Did he ever go to one just to see it? Has he ever taken a road trip across America? Can he even drive? What's the farthest he, personally, has driven a car? I can only picture him driving a golf cart! Distance: 18 holes.

Did Biden just compare calls for him taking a cognitive test - a freaking normal course of business for a 79 year old man - to a black man being tested for drugs?

Wow. If the shoe was on the other foot...

Everyone stumbles in speech. Some people more than others. And some people stumble today more than they did a few years ago. Some of those things are worrying, some are not.

Biden’s reaction to being asked about a mental test reminds me of how I sometimes reacted to being asked if I was drunk when I was but wanted to hide it. It’s an odd conceit. Similar to what I found when I worked in a liquor store—underage kids thinking the best way to convince me they were 21 was to act outraged when I asked to see an ID. The feigned indignation is as good as an admission of guilt.

"I'm so forward looking" to see Joe make an ass out of himself during the debates I can hardly wait.

As far as Yos-so-mite I can imagine Trump when he was younger went to see some natural wonders like the Aurora borealis in Alaska or maybe an eclipse on a Brazil mountain top he flew to on a private jet and was like "Meh, what's the big deal?" He probably values National Parks because he knows that is popular, not due to some deep intrinsic value having experienced them. Its just the way he's wired.

Nonapod said...

I believe that Trump sometimes fumbles words and phrases because he doesn't filter properly and he chooses to say things in stream of consciousness way. I don't believe Trump's speech patterns are a sign of some sort of impairment but an active choice on his part. He likes to fillibuster and barage people with content. It's very inelegant and messy, but it's definitely purposeful. Whether or not Trump's style is appealing or infuriating differs from person to person obviously.

Conversely, I believe that Biden various gaffes and fumbles may indeed be due to some kind of cognitive impairment.

Yes, obviously I'm biased in my interpretations. But I still believe that I'm closer to the truth than not.

Far more likely, he didn’t preview that part of the speech or was distracted and started pronouncing the word before realizing what the word was (when reading out loud, our brains and our mouths are often on different parts of the text). Not a surprise that Trump would have little interest in the national parks. I visit a couple of state parks near me pretty regularly. One is a bike/walking/running trail that extends for 45 miles. It is used a great deal, on the weekends, probably by thousands, given that it is 45 miles long (only about a hundred feet wide). What I notice is that all these people are out on the trail, sometimes for hours, and they are not spending any money! No company is making a recurring profit! Sure, people have bought bikes and clothing and running gear, but those are one-time purchases. So of course, in Trump's way of thinking, parks are simply a waste of space. Very hard to monetize them. They are anathema to every value on which he has pitched his life and way of being.

Some of them have been friends of mine, but I don't have much use for most of them. One thing I won't criticize Manhattanites or Queens people for is their failure to travel to our National Parks out west. I can hear, and have heard, German, French, Spanish and Italian spoken at the Grand Canyon or at Zion or Yosemite as European tourists have enjoyed our parks. I've also been in 45 of our 50 states.

But if a Noo Yawkuh never learns to drive a car and travel across the countryside, I say more power to them. And they are not alone. My recently deceased 89 year old brother in law lived all his life in San Francisco--and never learned to drive a car.

The difference between the two gaffs here is that nobody thinks Trump's was due to a cognitive decline that can only get worse and usually does so very fast. Biden was not mispronouncing a single word that he was not familiar with. He couldn't put together sentences using words he knows well. That is the important thing. The two gaffs have really nothing in common.

Easy to imagine Yoesmite being so hyphenated as

Althouse said Yo, Semites" is hilarious, but think more deeply about it. It means that Trump has very little interest in our national parks.

Just maybe, just maybe, Trump has read some original books on Yosemite. I've been there a lot and recall reading "Yo Semite" in several books possibly including John Muir.
From Smithsonian: The naturalist John Muir is so closely associated with Yosemite National Park—after all, he helped draw up its proposed boundaries in 1889, wrote the magazine articles that led to its creation in 1890 and co-founded the Sierra Club in 1892 to protect it.
From Wikipedia:
The first US post office opened in 1869, originally named "Yo Semite." The spelling was changed to Yosemite in 1908 and to Yosemite National Park in 1922.

Yosemite is from Yos.s.e'meti (Central Miwok) originally referred to the Indian tribe that lived in Yosemite Valley. Yosemite means literally “those who kill”

Not to offend you but I think it's a little snarky to decide "Trump has very little interest in our national parks". Trump has his interests, you and I have ours. I don't like golf and apparently neither do you. He probably also doesn't scuba dive, sailboat, play pickup basketball, or dozens of other things that neither you and I may do. To each his own.

I also really don't appreciate the emphasis on adding National Park visits to people's "bucket list". It crowds up the park with "selfie" tourists who in the end have no real interest in the park. Entering Yellowstone you are told not to take selfies with the Buffalo. This should not be necessary advice when entering a National Park. We have to find less used trails and off trail hikes to get the peace we look for in the National parks and forests.

The last time we went up to Tuolumne Meadows area and hiked the more obscure Mono pass trail, a pair of "selfie" tourists in the parking area asked us, "Where is the John Muir trail? We want to hike it." My wife and I looked at each other no knowing what to say.

It kept him in politics for 50 years, finishing up with 8 years as vice-president, and that's gotta count for something too. Back in 2000, we stayed at the tent cabins in Toulumne Meadows Lodge in the Yosemite high country. We would spend a week in Mammoth Lakes and one night at a tent in the lodge to enjoy the high country.

The night we got there we found Laura Bush and her party were also at the lodge. She and her friends (and her secret service detachment) were doing the High Sierra camp loop. The Secret Service guys were hilarious - no boots just dress shoes - suits and ties when everyone else was dressed for hiking - one guy following behind the mules on the pack train taking equipment up to Vogelsang Camp for when she got there - real fish out of water everywhere.

I joked with my wife that I didn't want my second grade daughter telling her class that she met the first lady in the bathroom. Next morning about 5:00, I had to accompany my daughter down to the bathroom. Sure enough, Laura Bush comes out laughing. My daughter ran into to her there and gave her the surprised open month gape that only a small kid can do. Later Laura saw our whole family and invited us to have our picture taken with her.
