"It's hard to believe that the hole President Trump dug for himself could get deeper, but it has."

Exclaims NPR in "2020 Electoral Map Ratings: Trump Slides, Biden Advantage Expands Over 270 Votes."

And yet it's still not reassurance enough — even this unfathomably deep abyss! — after what happened in 2016.

The hole is so deep that Biden is expected to win 297 electoral votes. That's 27 more than are needed to win. You have to imagine Florida going for Trump to see a way for him to get out of that hole.

Obviously it's totally in the bag then. No reason for Dems to worry at all. Heck, it's clearly so overwhelming that there's no need to even bother going out and voting for ol' Joe.

I was expecting it because Florida, not because of the bumper stickers.

In other news I saw a Nader sticker on a Prius today, but not a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.

As one can see from the frantic pro-Beijing posts by ARM and the loony Inga, democratics require reassurance from their betters at least 4 times per day every day.

This hilarious article comes out hard on the heels of multiple polls showing Trump ahead or near even (which has to be a record for any republican in a July poll) along with Biden obviously collapsing cognitively (he didn't have much farther to fall...talk about an abyss!) and with the dems desperately seeking to re-institute complete economic shutdowns while implementing Cheat by Mail schemes in every battleground state controlled by a democrat governor....all the while pre-claiming Trump will not concede....all the while offering up a "nice country you've got there, be a shame if something happened to it" extortion threat for continued riots if the peasants don't do what they are told.

How could it get any worse for Trump than a 2016-like 98% chance of a Hillary landslide?

Very telling.

BTW, weren't we supposed to have Biden's VP pick announced already? My my. Apparently, when ARM claimed the democratics could run a turnip and win who knew finding a turnip to replace Dementia Joe would be so hard?

Indeed, NPR can't imagine Trump winning FL? A state he won in 2016? Let's see what the polling looks like once they focus on LV's instead of RV's.

Wishful thinking, NPR.

I just finished reading the comments on Matt Tabibi's latest article. Several commenters said they did not vote for Trump is 2016 and still dislike him, but they are voting for him in November because the Democrats have become so awful. Many of the progressives in that same thread say they too are disgusted by Biden and the Dems and will vote third party.

I have seen many, many comments on Twitter and on blogs saying "I didn't vote for Trump in 2016, but am voting for him in November - but of course, I can't tell anybody that."

Who knows which way the cat will jump, but I have a feeling Dem bullying will come back to bite them in the ass.

I thought there was a poll giving Trump 50% that just came out. In any case, the problem with polling for Nov 2020 POTUS election is this country is deeply divided Politically by demographics. Blacks will vote 90% for Biden. Hispanics, Jews, and other minorities by 2-1. Whites give Trump a majority.

So, in your polls you have to forecast how many of these groups will show up and vote in November and then have your polling population match that. If you get it wrong, then your poll is crap. For example, if project the Voting population for a state will be 12% black, 65% white, 23% other. Then your poll has to match that. And that forecast has to match the actual turnout. But no one knows if that will be true. Its all a guess at this time. Will blacks, for example, turn out in record numbers? Or stay home? no one knows. Same with white working class voters.

rcocean said...

As I said in another thread, I'm shocked Trump ins't winning in a landslide and will probably lose. Incredible. But when people vote their identity, and don't really care about anything else, that's what happens.

It doesn't matter how poorly the D's run say Calf, or SF, or Detroit. People in those places vote their identity and they will NEVER vote R, no matte what. We're now seeing this play out on a national scale. So the D's can nominate a senile 78-y/o fool as POTUS and the D voters don't care. He's their guy, because he has D after his name, and "As a..." they vote D. No matter what.

rcocean said...

Finally, as stated above, the polling in POTUS elections always seems to favor the D's for some reason. In 1980, Reagan was in most polls 4-6 points behind Carter in October 1980, yet won by 9 points! And in 2000, most of the polls in Sept/early October showed Gore with an 8% lead. And then in mid October, it all turned around for Bush.

I had a liberal friend complain this weekend that they wish the media would stop posting polls showing Biden so far ahead as A)Its seems to good to be true B)It will be an even more soul crushing blow this November if the media was again blowing smoke up his ass to make him feel better. C)He suspects there are millions of new Trump voters too scared or not covered by the polls to show how close the election really is and he now has no idea what will happen this fall.

The media has to somehow pretend its total botching of the 2016 outcome doesn't still haunt it's credibility today.

You have to imagine a bit more than that. On the NPR map, Trump would have to win all five toss-ups - Wisconsin, Ohio, Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia - plus Florida. The most althouse.blogspot.com-centric outcome would be if Trump wins all those states but Wisconsin is disputed and goes to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Let's call that the Hans Christian Heg's revenge scenario.

Unfortunately for Trump, Biden isn't unlikable like Hillary. He is just sad. Hillary lost lots of votes because people thought she was evil. It is tough to see Biden as evil, even if he had a terrible past full of awful actions, which he really doesn't. He has been centrist for most of his political career. While that might make the far left of the Democrats ill, it won't negatively effect the swing votes in the middle. Also, he seems like an affable fellow. Again unlike Hillary who comes off as evil to many.

You have to imagine Florida going for Trump to see a way for him to get out of that hole.

Nate (yes, that Nate) does a good job ranking the position of swing states..

However, the Electoral College looks like it could still give Trump an advantage, just like it did four years ago. It’s hard to see that advantage now because Biden leads in nearly every swing state, but if you look at each state’s polling average relative to the national polling average3 (the rightmost column in the table below), you get a sense of whether the state is redder or bluer than the country as a whole. As you can see, by this metric, many of these states lean more toward Trump than the country does. That means that, if the overall race tightens, those states could slide into Trump’s column, allowing him to once again win a majority of electoral votes even if Biden wins the national popular vote.

So it isn't hard to see how a small misassumption about the 2020 electorate shifts swing states one way or another, and how sensitive those states are to changing color.

The major error in 2016 was assigning Obama's voters to Hillary. A small error in the electorate assumptions led to the very wrong predictions.

Nate has in order of 'more red' than the nation: TX IA GA NC OH AZ PA FL WI NH NV MI.

Using the above ranking it would be difficult to see the scenario NPR speculates about..

Idiots, by definition, idiots. What about Auden, my own British bastard:

September 1, 1939
W. H. Auden - 1907-1973

I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.

Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.

Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About Democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;
Analysed all in his book,
The enlightenment driven away,
The habit-forming pain,
Mismanagement and grief:
We must suffer them all again.

Into this neutral air
Where blind skyscrapers use
Their full height to proclaim
The strength of Collective Man,
Each language pours its vain
Competitive excuse:
But who can live for long
In an euphoric dream;
Out of the mirror they stare,
Imperialism's face
And the international wrong.

Faces along the bar
Cling to their average day:
The lights must never go out,
The music must always play,
All the conventions conspire
To make this fort assume
The furniture of home;
Lest we should see where we are,
Lost in a haunted wood,
Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good.

The windiest militant trash
Important Persons shout
Is not so crude as our wish:
What mad Nijinsky wrote
About Diaghilev
Is true of the normal heart;
For the error bred in the bone
Of each woman and each man
Craves what it cannot have,
Not universal love
But to be loved alone.

From the conservative dark
Into the ethical life
The dense commuters come,
Repeating their morning vow;
"I will be true to the wife,
I'll concentrate more on my work,"
And helpless governors wake
To resume their compulsory game:
Who can release them now,
Who can reach the deaf,
Who can speak for the dumb?

All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.
