"I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife..."

"... and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting.... I have to say, that waking up to the news, waking up to how this administration has or has not responded, waking up to, yet another, story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanised, or hurt or killed, or, falsely accused of something, it is exhausting. And, and it, it has led to a weight, that I haven’t felt in my life, in, in a while.... Barack’s in his office, making calls, working on his book. I’m in my room, the girls are on their computers. But right around five o’clock, everybody comes out of their nooks, and, we like, do an activity, like, puzzles have become big, just just sitting and doing these thousand piece puzzles.... So Barack has taught the girls [the card game] spades, so now there’s this vicious competition.... It’s almost like they needed the world to stop a little bit. You know they didn’t realise that they were, that the world they were on, and the way they were living it, was so treadmill-like. So fast and furious. Um, because it was all they ever knew.... [The pandemic is an opportunity to] decide how you want to show up in the new world. Because it will be a new world."

Said Michelle Obama, in her podcast, quoted at The Guardian.

I wonder if Michelle Obama suffers from the medical condition, depression. I hear "some form of low-grade depression" to mean that she feels low or sad based on the current conditions, not that she has clinical depression. But perhaps she does, and I would hope that people who suffer from depression feel supported by her words.

As for the Obamas, under lockdown, doing puzzles at the end of the day — I imagine that millions of people, reading about that, feel uplift just to picture the beloved family around a table in the evening  laughing and talking over a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle. I am not kidding when I say that typing out that sentence brought tears to my eyes. What is more wholesome than a married couple with their adult children working on a complicated puzzle together? Such a beautiful life, and yet they still think of the troubles of the world and carry that weight along with them.

What puzzles do you imagine them doing? Maybe Van Gogh's "Starry Night" or Edward Gorey's "Cat Fancy" or this William Morris tapestry. That's what the Obamas in my evening fantasy are doing, and if someone made a puzzle out of an intricately detailed painting of the Obamas doing a puzzle, I would do that puzzle and so would millions of Americans. It might cure low-grade depression.

And here are the rules for the card game spades. Key rule: "The spade suit is always trump."

ADDED: "There's a tramp sittin' on my doorstep/Tryin' to waste his time/With his methylated sandwich/He's a walking clothesline/And here comes the bishop's daughter/On the other side/She looks a trifle jealous/She's been an outcast all her life/Me, I'm waiting so patiently/Lying on the floor/I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle/Before it rains anymore...."

one of the things I love about the Obamas, is that they love each other

I'm sure that is one of the clauses in the contract...

If the Obamas were white, would they have any of their wealth, fame, or power? We have plenty of race baiting opportunists, from Al Sharpton to the BLM movement, but no two people have ever profited so much from the unfair charge of racism against their fellow Americans. I respect their family life, but that is the full extent of it. If they just told people how important that was instead of accusing us of such terrible things, they could have actually helped someone besides themselves.

I couldn't agree more. 900 Black babies are killed every day because the Democratic Party and feminists refuse to acknowledge their humanity.

Imagine listing all the people in the county who have to carry weight, many in divorce, unemployed, bankrupted, their businesses burned down, with broken families and ruined by 2020, and just where would you put the Obamas on that list of people with reason to be depressed?

WTF is wrong with you? You sound like a 12 year old talking about the horror of the Kardashians finding the caviar spoiled.

Constitutional law question: what would happen if Biden forgets to name a VP candidate, constitutionally speaking?

The Electors would chose one. They are required to vote for a president and a vice president. Biden is not required to name a vice-president.

"Look back at which Presidents gained the most financially from their "public service" and which party they were in. For Democrats rags to riches is a political story."

I despise folks who hare Pres Herbert Hoover who saved, through his own hard efforts and by spending his own money saved hundreds of thousands of WWI kids from starvation in Europe and no one gives a shit because Roosevelt bitched him out. Whatever Roosevelt was he was a backstabbing asshole, he won the war. It was good that Truman got to run the peace. If yOu vote for Biden, who will be president,? Dr, EdD Jill? Hunter?

I don't miss the Obamas for second. And I take her notion of a "new world" as a threat -- just like her admonition that Barack won't let you go forward without fundamental change.

Nobody should ever fall in love with the personal love story of any politician. Their whole lives are based on creating an image. Care about the love in your own life, with the people you know.

"I think if Biden dramatically names Michelle as his VP, then this too fulfills Drago's prediction.

The over/under on the number of months before Slow Joe gets eased out would be four or five. Heck, they might not even tell Joe - just put him in a different basement of a fancy house. He won't know the difference."

Well, if he picks Hillary! as the VP and wins the election, he will be eased out on election night- a slip on the wet floor of his bathroom, onto a surprisingly well placed ice pick.

I seriously doubt that narcissist Barack Obama has ever loved anyone but himself.

I wish her well in her struggles with depression and hypocrisy. There are always new beginnings. Think of Al Gore and his divorce. If Al Gore could pull off a divorce after that icky kiss on nomination night, then there's hope for her. She doesn't have to spend the rest of her life playing card games with Barack. She just needs the courage to take that leap of faith. There's a better world out there for Michelle after the split. Think Geffen yacht.....Satire isn't really Swiftian unless a few people don't quite get it.

Me too, and for the same reason. Tears of laughter. Thanks. I would have had a low grade depression all day except to be honest I was enjoying the summer from dawn when I started the day with coffee, to supper, fresh field corn and an apricot. Weeding was in there somewhere. Took time off for some sadz, reading the news. Also I had to fold laundry, why does this keep happening to me? Then a dip in Althouse. Spades are trump at the Obama house. Going on to sip wine and listen to the dark.

I absolutely believe that last sentence. Where it concerns the Obamas, I believe your "cruel neutrality" is neither.

I am sorry that Michelle O. is experiencing mental health issues, no matter the level. As someone who has seen what mental illness does to loved ones, I understand better than most. But...happy family? Families often seem happy to outsiders. Barry O. often seems serene in his own sense of superiority, while he has all the personal warmth of a new pack of aluminum foil.

Hillary's depressed too. I wonder if she and Bill and Chelsea played cards and puzzles together.
Somehow I don't think so.

Inga: This thread reveals the deep level to which Trumpists are capable of going. It reads like a KKK bible, a sadomasochistic sexual deviant instruction manual or a murder and mayhem screen play about Trumpists who are living out the last weeks of their cult leader’s political life.

WTF is the matter with you, insane, deranged dingbat?

Rusty said...

Why is the left so obsessed with the KKK? There's like 15 or 20 of em left and when they do show up in public most folks just laugh. Like the Nazis in Skokie. There were more reporters than Nazis. They must be convinced that there is a huge gang of white supremist somewhere.

I can tell: You guys are even listening to the broadcast on the subject.

How can white people be better - how can we make a more perfect union - if you stay so stupid?

Most of the problems in the black community are NOT due to the police or false accusations (though of course those exist) but due to single-motherhood, gang culture, lack of interest in books, dropping out of schools, etc.

You guys have GOT to get some black friends so you can see and hear how dumb and racist you sound.

I can’t wait until the day after the election.

We all know how stupid Inga is, but she appears to have had a psychotic break from reality. Perhaps she is wearing her mask too tight. Mocking Michele, or saying Michele is boring makes you, in the lunatic mind of Inga, a KKKer or sexual deviant, although there are, in fact, no death threats, no sexual comments, and no racial slurs.

Inga sees words that aren't there and creates imaginary drama in her own mind.

She's a harebrained kook - just like Biden.

Maybe the Obamas are reminiscing about that last financial crisis where he foist the banks' losses on taxpayers while allowing them to foreclose on taxpayer houses plunging 5 million families into financial ruin.

Since Michelle mentioned having a hypocrite in the white house...

Did she mention which mansion they were nesting in? Is it the one where he films his interviews? In front of bookshelves with no books? Or is it the beach mansion ($11mm) that was built at sea level -- the same sea level that will be underwater in a few years if you believe his global warming rhetoric.

Elevating the Obamas to beloved American hero status makes me want to vomit.
