Meanwhile, the BBC has decided that Rule Britannia is un-woke, for its assertion that Britons never (never, never) shall be slaves. It is traditionally sung quite enthusiastically at the finale of the Proms Concerts at Royal Albert Hall. It usually goes something like this.

A re-read of Catcher in the Rye -- again after a space of many decades -- is in the line-up, followed by Crime and Punishment (although that's iffy since it is 400 pages long).

Some others of a similar theme come after that.

Just read that "A 33 year-old Hong Kong man who was infected with the Wuhan coronavirus in April, and made a full recovery, was reinfected more than four months later after a trip to Spain via the UK, according to researchers. A research team from the University of Hong Kong calls this “the world’s first documentation” of a patient who recovered from the Wuhan virus becoming reinfected."

I swear that I've heard similar claims made by hopeful liberal media dozens of times over the past month.

What gives.

If that's all the information they gave you, you need a new source.

Patient developed antibodies immediately that killed the virus. Good news.

I just got called from Biden's people to do a poll about the presidential election. The things they said about Biden and how he will lead the country were laughable. Do they really think everyone forgot what it was like living in the US in January and to they really think everyone blames Trump for 1. Covid-19, 2. the close down of the economy and 3. the fact that public teachers are too lazy to go back to work and do their jobs. We had fewer cases of Covid prior to the mask requirement in my city and Biden wants to make it nation wide. I know I live in Texas but really who sees Kenosha burning and thinks "Biden will fix this"?

Mark said...

Either (1) one of the positives were false or it was an anomaly, in which case all is well, or (2) there will be no widespread immunity, in which case we need to come to grips with the fact that the virus will be with us and we need to learn to live with it.

Still waiting for anyone to show me a randomized, double blind study that proves that wearing masks reduces covid deaths.

That's an engineering question, not a medical one. Spread is exponential with each infected person on the average infecting R others. R varies. If it falls below 1.0, the disease disappears.

Two things change R downwards towards 1.0.

1. Population immunity - what fraction of the potential targets have already had the disease and so can't be infected where they otherwise would be.

2. Masks. A mask that is 95% effective at preventing the spread (fairly useless in medical settings but useful for general life) reduces R towards 1.0.

The combination reaches 1.0 faster, with more of the population uninfected, with masks; and the disease disappears without those being in the dying fraction of infected people.

So engineeringwise, it saves lives. No double blind needed.

Incidentally, if one mask is 95% effective in preventing infection spread, two masks (both people wearing a mask, that is) is 99.75% effective. So R drops even faster towards 1.0.

It wouldn't be surprising if this were true, since the Covid-19 virus is so much like four common cold coronaviruses that having been infected by one of these other viruses can in the right circumstance give you antibodies to Covid-19 itself. And then given that we know from a multi-decade common cold study done in the Netherlands that many people are repeatedly reinfected by the some cold coronavirus over the years, it wouldn't be surprising if the same thing were to happen with Wuhan coronavirus.

But the report could also be an error. In both cases, the original infection and the second infection, this man was asymptomatic. Now I'm sure they were quite careful to verify that this man really was infected with the Covid-19 virus on the second test. five months later. But as it's likely that the first result was based on one test, and its possible that the first positive was an error.

I was very disappointed with Martha...I know she's a uniparty-type person, but she didn't follow up.

Her biggest missed question, one she should ask to anyone supporting Biden, let alone a 'Republican,' is: "How can you support a candidate like Joe Biden who is obviously suffering from cognitive decline?"

A second follow-up would be to ask if China is a threat to U.S. security, and do they think that Joe is already in the pocket of China...

And I should say, even if it is possible or even likely that some people will get infected year after year by the Covid-19 coronavirus, it's also possible and even likely that second and subsequent infections will not be as severe as the first. The reason for that is T cells. Early data is suggesting that Covid-19 T cells last considerably longer than Covid-19 antibodies and these T cells may even last a lifetime.

Covid-19 antibodies may stop an infection before it gets started, but if you've lost your Covid-19 antibodies but still have Covid-19 T cells, then those Covid-19 T cells should shorten the duration and severity of the infection.

Fun day in Kenosha day-playing with the Nets.
Watching PD in riot gear at 4am, rid in formation next to smashed or burned out garbage trucks. Loooking at a minority owned car lot flamed out to the point of husks standing atop collapsed steel radials. Watching area businesses rush to cover broken/yet to be broken in plywood the city generously provided as tacit admission they are on their own. For added protections, there appeared to be a free supply of nicely printed Save our community/these are family businesses signs with matching Black Lives Matter signs. (one didn't appear without the other) Note: Cheap duct tape can affix those to genuine plywood. Particle board will release signs from its skin quite readily. One business got to the fuckin' point and simply spray painted "Black owned business" to separate it from the the white hipster wannabee bizness that inhabited this span of blocks near those damn coppers.
Mr. 262 wants to be heard beyond being a DJ in his past.
If you ever need to hoist full sheets of particle board over an awning and up to a 2nd floor former window/now glassless cargo port, it can be done with what looks like a ratty, lengthy ratchet strap. (An OSHA regulator has gone fetal position)
Mr carrying a pan african flag was in discussion with mr. US flag, back the blue flag as i bailed.
I was happy to exit Kenosha late aft but was sent to alternate exits ("Turn around honey") as advancing BLM march blocked what Google deemed proper path home.
Hard to describe but..this hipster neighborhood had tons of neighborly concern (No I do not want a free water bottle now vs 3 minutes ago) matched by tangible actions in what is ultimately concessions to mayhem.

Re the question of whether surviving a bout of Coronavirus-2019 provides lasting immunity to the disease. Here we have an interesting blog post from a week ago concerning three recent studies in this regard, to wit: “COVID19 mini-update, August 18, 2020: good news about lasting immunity in humans.”

One study referred to is particularly interesting, I think. “In brief: the 122 crew of a commercial fishing vessel were tested pre-departure, both RT-PCR and antibody. Three of them had clear evidence of past recovery from COVID19-infection. Clearly, one of the crew was a false negative for RT-PCR, for in the subsequent weeks, the vessel had to return to port because a crew member needed hospitalization. At that point, 104 crew (i.e., 85%!) tested positive either for virus or for antibodies. (Interestingly, the percentage of asymptomatic infections is not given in the paper.) Significantly, the three crew members with pre-existing immunity did not get infected again, despite being aboard what amounted to an unintentional viral incubator.”
