After all that! It's Kamala Harris.

"Joseph R. Biden Jr. selected Senator Kamala Harris of California as his vice-presidential running mate on Tuesday, embracing a former rival who sharply criticized him in the Democratic primaries but emerged after ending her own campaign as a vocal supporter of Mr. Biden and a prominent advocate of racial-justice legislation after the death of George Floyd in late May" — the NYT reports.

It's so much the obvious choice that all I can wonder about is: Why did he almost not pick her?

Willie Brown is the smartest politician in the last two generations of California politicos. Ms. Harris has knelt at his feet for advice and advancement in the past. Willie advised Kamala not to take this gig. I think he figured that the Biden/Rice, Biden/Bass, Biden/Tank Abrams duo would go down in flames. And 2024 would be Kamala's turn.

I like Willie Brown. He is a charming rogue---but he's still a rogue. And he's one smart pol.
And I'd be even happier if the Biden/Harris duo sink like a stone in November. That will prove Willie right once again. He's not often wrong.

Don't forget that Kamala Harris basically flaked off to Canada as a child, so has no idea how divisive the public busing issue was to Americans. She has all the negatives of a race-obsessed black supremacist, yet won't even unite the black vote as well as Obama did. Do liberals actually think the Nation of Islam, among many others, will stand for a former prosecutor married to a pale Jew?

Ha, ha, ha.

A strong sorta black woman, who sorta came from the USA via Canada. About 1/4 white, 1/4 black, and 1/2 Hindu. No kids, but a Jewish Husband. Like Obama she may be called "black" but culturally and genetically she has zero in common with most American blacks. I wonder if this will cause black voters to come out in droves or simply illicit a big yawn. trump was saying on the Fox Sports Interview that VP's don't matter. People vote for the president and that Biden will have to stand on his own two feet. I think that's right.

Personally, I'm glad it was her and not Warren or the horrible woman in Michigan, or Rice who's never run anything or ran for office.

Makes zero political sense (the white Left can't stand Harris because of her prosecutor past and because she was in bed with California police unions, Blacks don't perceive her as an African American because she's not, and she doesn't help electorally because she represents a state where Biden has a 30-point lead) unless you've painted yourself into a corner by promising a woman-of-color VP, in which case it makes perfect political sense.

Kamela Harris is the daughter of immigrants. She is Jamaican/Indian and spent her teen years in Canada with her mother. Harris' ridiculous nonsense about being Bused as a child in Berkeley, was not only an attempt to attack Biden, but an attempt to connect with black voters. It didn't seem to work then, and she never got any traction with them. I was surprised she didn't go better with both black and white voters, but I think she's basically unlikable and comes off as harsh. She got selected by the Party leaders for US Senate, and since its a One-party state, she cruised to victory.

Now she's being selected as VP, and if Biden is elected, she will be the next POTUS, because old, senile Joe isn't going to make it to 2024. I hope everyone who votes Biden, knows they're REALLY voting for Biden and then Harris to server 4 years as POTUS.

Ann: Why did he almost not pick her?

That's pretty simple: she has a ton of baggage. She slept her way to the top, she was prosecuting marijuana crimes with vigor while she was using the stuff herself, being part of the criminal justice system is an issue these days generally, she has African lineage but she's not really part of the "standard" African-American experience in any meaningful way, she represents a state that Biden should win anyway, apparently she wants to bring back busing which is unpopular in general, and she was a complete failure in the primaries being forced out before any votes were registered despite being considered top tier. The only thing that recommends her is she is pretty and she managed to nail one of the best zingers of the debates, except the latter was at the expense of Biden.

I suppose compared to the rest of the choices she may be the best of the bunch. I suppose when given a selection of the mean girl of the Senate, the mean girl of governors, the fake governor, the fake Indian, the I love Fidel girl, and I lost my legs therefore you must listen woman, the one who smells nice does have its charms.

YoungHegelian said...

In addition to the reasons that Mark at 3:42 above lists out, I'd like to add another reason that Harris strikes me as a not very useful pick for Biden -- she pisses off the left wing of the Democrats because she was a prosecutor, and law enforcement is in a bad odor in the modern Democratic Party.

Biden needs the hard Left to, if not "get on board", then at least pipe down. Every riot is a donation-in-kind to the Re-Elect Trump 2020 campaign. I really don't think that the old geezer Democratic "moderates" like Biden & his crew realize how little of their old Democratic Party survives in the trenches. The hard left is stronger now in the Democratic Party than it was even in Eugene McCarthy/George McGovern's day, and Harris is not their girl.

Quote from Professor Donald Harris, father of Kamala Harris (Sept 2018), published on the Jamaica Global Website in January of 2019:

“My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (née Christiana Brown, descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown’s Town) and to my maternal grandmother Miss Iris (née Iris Finegan, farmer and educator, from Aenon Town and Inverness, ancestry unknown to me). The Harris name comes from my paternal grandfather Joseph Alexander Harris, land-owner and agricultural ‘produce’ exporter (mostly pimento or all-spice), who died in 1939 one year after I was born and is buried in the church yard of the magnificent Anglican Church which Hamilton Brown built in Brown’s Town (and where, as a child, I learned the catechism, was baptized and confirmed, and served as an acolyte).”

The Kamala Harris family......slaveowners.

According to Kamala Harris' own father.

Re: the marijuana/rap thing people are mentioning above, I think the most likely fact pattern is that Harris has never been a regular user of marijuana. She had to make up a fake story about listening to rappers in college while smoking joints because that wasn't actually something she did. Probably not much hypocrisy in her prosecuting marijuana crimes as a result.

I think the better argument against her record is that it's not either or re the police. "Law and Order" doesn't mean you have to ignore or excuse misconduct by prosecutors or policemen. The weakness in Harris's record isn't that she prosecuted crime aggressively -- that's the strongest part of her record! The weakness is that as AG, she excused and defended instances where California prosecutors and policemen cut corners and engaged in misconduct. That's not an argument I trust Trump to make. But it's the argument I think he should make.

This is the first time in a week that I've refreshed Althouse. I've been busy with the goat fence—pulled the trigger on the goats yesterday—and my brother is going to run for city council against the communist ticket. Yes, here in tiny Milwaukie, Ore., a classic Portland Liberal is a moderate.

So, I'm a roll here and I have to get back to goat prep.

The shit in Chicago Sunday night? Where my commie daughter and ex-wife live together with my daughter's worthless half-French common-law husband, who is unemployed but I understand is a good house boy?

Sunday night's looting was wild and from Dior's on Michigan Blvd. to the North Ave. Best Buy that was looted is about two miles. The city had the CTA shut down, state cops shut down all the entrances to the Kennedy, Ike and Dan Ryan expressways and raised all the bridges downtown to isolate the disturbance, except for the LaSalle, which was the public safety corridor.

Supposedly, this was some kind of response to the earlier in the day shooting of a black man on the south side. It was a shootout between the cops and this dude. He wasn't even killed, just wounded. It sounded pretty insane to me for the "people" to respond to a felon shithead getting not-killed to take the Red Line up to Streeterville for some lux and electronic store looting.

I'm like, I think we're approaching Peak Stupid. But no! This morning I learn that BLM held a demonstration yesterday Demanding that the state release the 100+ looters who had been arrested. They had fucking banners in favor of looting and took the position that this was the beginning of reparations. Speaking of Peak Stupid, I wonder if Rose City Antifa is thinking, hold our beer.

The Rose City fuckheads are into their about 70th day of nightly rioting. The feds are watching their powder as Mayor Wheeler and Governor Brown have promised to protect the federal courthouse with local troops. Over the weekend, Antifa did one attack on the Portland East cop shop in East Portland, trying to set fire to the building, among other crimes. The next night they were up in North Portland trying to torch the cops union hall. At least, since the deal with Trump was to lay off attacking the fed courthouse, they have found other rows to hoe.

But, the backlash is coming. Commie symp Mayor Wheeler was on the TV after the attack on East Precinct telling the Antifa that trying to torch a building with people inside is not 1st Amendment peaceful protesting but really attempted murder. I'm guessing the business community and others have been really squeezing his balls the last week to make him sing a different tune.

Good times. Back to the fence.

The notion that some slaves were owned by blacks completely upturns the entire leftist narrative. That it was common enough that their own VP candidate is a descendant of black slaveowners makes it so dangerous to the entire progressive version of history that not one word of it will be spoken in ANY media outlet with any leftist viewership. As the 1968 LA Times article at this link notes, Berkeley instituted busing in an effort to integrate its schools racially and socioeconomically. The results were predictable.

All I know is that just over a month from now, the media will announce that Republicans have made such an issue of Biden's dementia that he will have to step down from the top of the ticket. Kamala will have accepted their nomination at the convention, by herself, because he ain't going and she is. They'll be on the ballot, because that's is what happens after accepting the nomination, but they can't change the ballot because Biden is demented. So she'll be the de facto Presidential candidate for Democrats, and it will be the Republicans fault as the media will tell us. BECAUSE, we won't be allowed to believe the defenders of Democracy threw out their primary process that would have selected Sanders and handed the nomination to Kamala Harris as the party elite's (i.e. California donors) preferred candidate.

Let's face it now, she won't help Biden as a VP. California would have gone to him anyway. She's a DA that allowed bad evidence to convict thousands of minorities, whose convictions were later thrown out by a federal court. Her family owned slaves. And she dropped out early in her own party's primary.

But as a Presidential candidate; she is a well spoke black woman confident and capable of enough to stand up to Trump in a rigged debate. She'll bring enthusiasm to the Democrat voter that currently wouldn't be bothered to leave their house to vote for Biden. Democrat donor class knows this and so it will be.

Did U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris’ Ancestor Own Slaves in Jamaica?
Based on an article written by the 2020 presidential Democratic primary candidate's father, right-leaning opponents dove head-first into an ill-judged attack on her. Snopes.

“Unproven

In his Jamaica Global article, Harris claimed to be descended from the 19th-century planter and slave owner Hamilton Brown. He wrote:

“My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (née Christiana Brown, descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown’s Town) and to my maternal grandmother Miss Iris (née Iris Finegan, farmer and educator, from Aenon Town and Inverness, ancestry unknown to me). The Harris name comes from my paternal grandfather Joseph Alexander Harris, land-owner and agricultural ‘produce’ exporter (mostly pimento or all-spice), who died in 1939 one year after I was born and is buried in the church yard of the magnificent Anglican Church which Hamilton Brown built in Brown’s Town (and where, as a child, I learned the catechism, was baptized and confirmed, and served as an acolyte).” [Emphasis is added].

There is no doubt that Hamilton Brown was a prominent plantation owner in Jamaica during the first half of the 19th century, owned slaves, and also advocated against the abolition of slavery and sought to downplay the difficult working and living conditions of slaves in Jamaica.

However, we have been unable to verify that a line of descent exists between the modern-day Harris family and the 19th-century slave owner. As such, the claim that an ancestor of Sen. Harris owned slaves in Jamaica remains unproven. If evidence emerges that verifies that line of descent, we will update this fact check accordingly.”

I disagree that Harris was the obvious choice here. She was certainly the easiest choice once Biden boxed himself into having to select a woman and this summer's protest events seemed to call for a woman of color, but the Democratic primary voters didn't seem all that enthused by her.

The problem for Harris is that the narrative has flipped on her in recent years. When she was Attorney General of California, it was important to be seen as tough on crime. The recent actions of her fellow DAs and AGs in deep blue areas to go soft on crime are a repudiation of her career as AG.

Is Harris going to call out BLM and call on the various Democrat mayors to put an end to the riots or will she wilt and repudiate her prior tough on crime actions? To do the former is to risk the wrath of the activists and the loss of base enthusiasm. To do the latter is to demonstrate she does not have the temperament to be President (i.e. make tough and unpopular decisions and stand by them). I'm sure she'd prefer to ignore the topic, but Trump is certain to bring it up.

Like Obama, her connection to "Black America" was very tenuous and seems to have been entirely through her father, Donald Harris. Interestingly enough Donald Harris was a constant adviser to Jamaican politicicans and was an

1968-72 Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin (Madison).

Interesting how Harris, like Obama, benefited from Affirmative action. A program set up to help American blacks who can trace their roots back to slavery, was used by both of them to rise to the top.

But obama was 1/2 white and 1/2 Kenyan and grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii. Harris is 1/4 black, 1/4 white, and 1/2 Hindu Indian, and grew up in Berkeley and Montreal. Donald Harris, Kamala father, was the decedent of slave owners, came to the Bay area in 1963 for post-graduate work, and was a top flight Stanford Professor at 34. kamala's Hindu mother came to the SF Bay area in 1963, and instantly became a well paid medical researcher.

I look forward to more talk from Harris and Obama how "the legacy of slavery" and "Systemic racism" hurt them in the rise to power.

Hamilton Brown definitely owned slaves. Kamala Harris's father was definitely told by his grandmother that she was a descendant of of Hamilton Brown. But there are no records showing that Hamilton Brown was married. And Snopes says there is no proof that Christiana Brown was a descendant of Hamilton Brown. I'm quite sure she was since Harris's father's family was connected with the Anglican church in St. Ann's, not the Baptist; and was educated. A study of the birth and baptismal records in St. Ann parish in the Anglican church would probably clarify the genealogical issues. I think it will dig up some painful issues but probably in the world we live in that's going to happen. Snopes covers the issues

I know that Biden thinks that all Blacks are the same, unlike Latinos, but Black/African American is not really a status as if Black and African American were necessarily equivalent.

Not all African Americans are Black, just like not all European Americans are white. Many from Africa are white, many are Mediterranean brown.

Not all Blacks are African American. I remember people would try to say that people like Kofi Annan were African American or some Black Brits were African American. And then some Blacks are American, but any ancestry to Africa is attenuated so that they cannot really be called African American -- if that were so, then we ALL are African American since humanity has its origin in that continent.

Certainly, those Blacks whose ancestry is not traced through Jim Crow and U.S. slavery and the slave trade to America have a vastly different cultural outlook than do those Blacks whose family does not have such a history.

In fact, there is some great hostility between Blacks whose families did have that history and African immigrants.

There are enough people to whom such things are important that the number of people bothering to vote and then vote or not vote for Biden-Harris could sway a couple of states.

Yeah, people tend to forget that the Europeans typically did not go to Africa and raid the coast for slaves. It did happen, but it was a heck of a lot easier to sail into port and buy the slaves at the slave market run by the local Africans. (The Europeans drove up the demand for slaves by a large to huge margin, but they didn't invent it.) And quite a few Africans who came to the Americas and were freed ended up becoming slave owners themselves.

Haiti is an interesting topic. When the revolution came, about a third of the plantations were controlled by blacks, or at least mixed race blacks, and those plantations relied upon slavery to function. In fact, when the revolution took over, the now freed slaves had to reinstate slavery-by-any-other-name just so they could produce enough sugar to sustain the economy. Haitian slavery was brutal by pretty much any standard and the basic strategy was work them to death and then bring in a new batch. Ugly stuff.

I'm guessing the most powerful person on Biden's staff, the one who really calls the shots, decided Harris was the least bad pick from a barrel of bad apples (I dare not say watermelons). Otherwise, I can't see what she brings to the ticket other than being the right age for a presidential candidate in today's septuagenarian political world.

She ran a terrible campaign for president, dropping out in December 2019 due to lack of funds. She never made it to a single primary.

And she is the least African-American woman of the rumored alternatives. What a mess.

In the 1700s, the West Indies station was also a bit of a death sentence, too. The Yellow Fever, dontcha know. Kamela's white roots in Jamaica show that her white folks were true survivors.

Not only is Kamela's Caribbean stock pretty hardy, she's herself pretty party-hearty.

Please tip your wait staff. Good night.

Look there's a bunch of Beta (Anne) Boleyn Lebowski's existing now, don't go trying to do anything different and make anything new.

Didn't you hear that song it's all been done?

Idiot.

It's all been done jackass! Sit at home and look at pretty painted faces.

Roots was a complete fraud, and showed the Hero Kente Koonte being kidnapped by Whites and brought aboard a slave ship. As mentioned above, 99.9% of all slaves from the West Coast of Africa that came to the Americas were sold to Whites. Reason? Not just disease. There were too few whites and there weapons weren't that much superior to those of the natives. Plus, the natives, not only were well-armed they were relatively well organized and warlike. Many of the slaves sold were POW's - losers in the various and constant wars fought in West AFrica.

OTOH, may Arab slavers did mount expedition up the Nile and along the coast of east Africa to capture slaves. That's because the numbers were far less and the natives less organized and more spread-out.

Why would Cruz support trump after he called his wife ugly and accused his dad of killing Kennedy. Who knows. They are politicians.

Its hard to believe now, but the Caribbean was not considered a nice place to live until the advent of steam ships and elimination of yellow fever and malaria in the early 20th century. The death rate was especially high before 1860, because cholera, typhus, and dysentery were even more deadly in the tropics then in Europe. Thackeray in "vanity fair" has a character exiled to "Swamp-town" in the Caribbean.

Further drawbacks to the Caribbean pre-1860: bad roads that could be full of mud, heat (no ice or A/c), inability to keep meat fresh (hence the use of salted meats), mosquitoes/flies (no DDT), and the lack of suitable cool outerwear. Weeks/Months from sailing ship from Europe and civilization.

And of course, Hurricanes.

Inga: "You people are truly stupid and arrogant in your stupidity. Do you think that most people by now don’t already know enough black history to know there were free black people, some even owned slaves themselves?"

Inga and Howard are not even the half of it. You lefties are so ignorant you will be surprised every week.

Sleepy, Creepy, Sloppy Joe went for a running mate who bent over backwards (insert Willie Brown joke/reference here) to call him a racist. A couple times. In easily-documentable evidence. Whoever is at the controls at Biden HQ likely selected Madame Face-lift because she polled the best among likely Dem voters.

Politics ain't beanbag, as Tim Russert used to say. Willie Brown's consort is about to find out what rough-and-tumble really means.

"She's a prosecutor, not a campaigner. Hopefully she will focus on convicting Trump of mass murder in the court of public opinion.”

Yes, he was too slow to implement the travel bans that Biden called racist at the time, and he didn’t prevent Cuomo and Deblasio from ignoring the crisis until the bodies piled up too high to be ignored. Remember when "His Honor" struck back at racism by urging New Yorkers to get out and celebrate Chinese New Year in a massive street festival as the pandemic was unfolding?

Plus impeachment to cover up for Biden’s bag-man son while the pandemic was first unfolding was a great move by Democrats. And I would like to hear how Biden would have told his own FDA to go pound salt on maintaining a monopoly on testing quicker than Trump did, since the Democrats are all about “leaving it to the professionals."

There is a lot of history to be rehashed there, and I don’t think it’s a cut and dried case against Trump, who also made missteps. If you cut out the deaths brought on by Cuomo and deBlasio fecklessness, the US would have done far better. It would be interesting to see it discussed accurately, which Howard knows it won’t be, since the billionaires whose knob he licks daily here, want Trump gone.

1. Perhaps Inga is ignorant of the term Afro-Caribbean.
2. Obviously voting for Biden proves Kamala’s Black now.
3. There is so little enthusiasm for this ticket every surrogate sent out to “celebrate” Joe's choice spent 90% of their screen time attacking Trump and reflecting away from this dynamic duo.
4. None of this convinced me the ‘tard from Throop* will actually appears at the top of the ticket in November.

*Joe claims Scranton just cuz it sounds cooler than Wilkes-Barre or Throop, PA.

Do you remember the video where she is asked about l’affair Smollett on the campaign trail just after her tweet in support of him and just as the story was falling apart? She looked completely poleaxed, and, what is worse, showed absolutely no ability to think on her feet. She’s a complete lightweight.

Ah, yes, the moment for a racialist healer, I mean racial arsonist, that cleverly explains Harris's selection. Because if the D and the nation want anything, it's more cities burning amirite?

Whether the father’s family owned slaves or not, the father is still of African descent. Actually 92% of Jamaicans are

Inga, I'll generously attribute your incomprehension to your foreignness. Kamalalalala is not ADOS, an American Descendant of Slaves. She has nothing in common with classic Af-Ams.

Let's say that some ancestor of hers from Jamaica (it's as likely, at some point, of some forebear from India, where it was legal till 1843) struggled under the lash. No psychic debt is thus owed her by America. No reparations are due. Purportedly (a crock, but), slavery anywhere else in the world was better than here, so a Jamaican slave or JDOS is far better off than an ADOS.

It's almost as if someone was damaged by and fled brutal czarism, communism or Nazism in Europe, came here, and was equally dysfunctional, hateful and ungrateful for the succor here provided.

LIKE YOU.

Agreed, very much so. Tell me Guildy, you'll tear hide off a commenter here, should he displease you. How come rhhardin has heretofore escaped your notice? He is proudly assertive in his view that sexual abuse of children is literally no big deal. Don't take my word for it, ask him.

Harris was the closest thing to a black woman that Biden's team could find, who might not alienate middle class White voters.
She will certainly lock in the Jewish entertainment lawyer's vote.

How nicely clarifying

"Black Lives Matter" means "Black lives matter if they were killed by police or white people. They don't matter if they were killed by other black people"

"Slavery was wrong" means "I do not object to slavery when the slave owner was black"
