"Yesterday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stood up and gave one of the finest speeches recently heard on the House floor, calling out not just Florida representative Ted Yoho..."

"... for having called her 'disgusting,' 'out of your freaking mind,' and a 'fucking bitch' on the steps of the Capitol in front of reporters on Tuesday, but also elucidating how that kind of language is normalized and deployed against all kinds of women, on all kinds of days. It was a remarkable piece of oratory, clear and thoughtful about some of the knottiest dynamics of gendered power imbalance in political, public, and personal life.... [Yoho] had offered up a floor speech purported to be apology, though it was actually far closer to pallid self-justification. 'Having been married for 45 years with two daughters, I’m very cognizant of my language,' Yoho had said, in a speech in which he did not mention Ocasio-Cortez’s name, and in which he nonsensically refused to 'apologize for my passion, or for loving my God, my family, and my country.' It was this non-apology and not his original outburst, Ocasio-Cortez said on Thursday, that led her to make her own speech, in which she eviscerated Yoho’s use of familial pablum and domestic association with women as evidence of his respect for them. Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that she, too, was someone’s daughter, and that that did not in any way insulate her or other women, also daughters and wives, from the impact of degrading and sexist diminution."

Writes Rebecca Traister in "The Poison of Male Incivility/When a woman dares respond to it, she’s seen as 'disruptive'" (The Cut).

Why did Yoho defend himself like that? He could have said he was just doing equality, and behind the scenes this is how the men talk to other men, using strong language. His apology was sexist, and it, ironically, cast the original remark as sexist. And now Traister can feed us civility bullshit.

I love when strong women use the 'frail woman' card. It almost makes me think the entire Womyn Movement is not really a movement, but a club used to beat people who accept being beaten.

Of course he should have just said, "I meant what I said." He would have been much more popular today.

You’re absolutely right. His mealy-mouthed “apology” makes it impossible to feel anything but disgust for him. That is how people talk in politics. You can say it should stop, but you can’t say it’s sexist. This is an example of AOC being a self-pitying child, but through his own ineptness, Yoho has allowed her to successfully play the martyr again.

It's a good thing that that kind of language is never normalized and deployed against all kinds of men.

Here in Nebraska a male GOP Senator was talking on the floor on some topic (I think global warming) and he was getting noise from a female Dem. He told her to "shut up" and flipped her off.

Dems up in arms!

But a few days before this incident, 83 years old Ernie Chambers spoke on the floor. He's a Black Dem. He inferred that 24 year old Senator Julia Slama (Yale grad and UNL Law student) had sex with the GOP Governor Pete Ricketts. He also spoke of his rape and abduction fantasy involving Senator Slama.

The Dems have been silent about the slander of Slama. It's okay because she's a Republican.

Apparently he's retiring so it doesn't really matter. But yes, he should have had the courage of his convictions. He was absolutely correct in his descriptions. And if a woman can't handle being told that why is she running the country? (If a woman is that, why is she running the country?)

I guess it demonstrates that Rep. Go to didn't think his way into it and he didn't think his way out of it. What he should have done was a Cyrano de Bergerac. Take it back then insult her fifty better ways.

And then these low-down people that I've named, Senator Slama, Governor Ricketts, and all the Republicans have decided to try to destroy that woman's reputation, destroy her by using my name.

"I feel an obligation, how they will take to show how she and I are in league with each other, to lift her up in the minds of the people who live down there with her, who have known her, who have never, to my way of thinking and understanding, since we're playing dirty, said that she was given favors because favors of a fleshy nature were expected in return.

Senator Ernie Chambers on the floor of the Nebraska Unicameral.

"Now I don't know if Senator Slama has heard what they are saying about her and why the governor picked a very young person with no life experiences. I didn't know they had traveled together. How would I know that if white people didn't tell me? They want to play dirty; well, let's get dirt out here on everybody.

" where certain salacious things were suggested about her because of some older white man who was supposed to symbolize power and why he's putting her in that position when she has no credentials to justify it. Only one thing. And that's what's being said about Senator Slama. She knows it. You all know it around here because some of you have told me, but I'm not going to out you."

....
"You all see him as a hero [Andrew Jackson]. I don't. Suppose I had raped white women. Suppose I enslaved Senator Slama and used her the way that I wanted to? You think Thomas Jefferson was a great man? Do you realize he had a room in Monticello for Sally Hemings? And he had six children by that woman, in the house where his wife lived?

Interesting conversation last night with family. All the kids and grandkids are overnighting at our house. After all the grandkids went out to the tent in backyard for the night, adult conversation ensued. Very enjoyable. Wide ranging topics, intelligent opinions across the political spectrum. Hard to describe how much fun it was.
At one point AOC came up. The DIL said she had heard snark about how stupid she was. So she watched several of her verbal performances. Her take away is, stupid is too kind. She tried to go to her official website and get curated video favorable to AOC, but the DIL said even that could not hide the stupid.

Nebraska got term limits on state legislators due to Ernie Chambers. He ran the whole Senate and the other Senators got sick of him. So they passed a term limits law. After he left office he sat out one term and came back for two more terms. He serves for another ten days or so and then he's done at the age of 83.

He hates white people and is damn proud of it.

Yes, men, women, and children, too. Feminism is a chauvinistic ideology, a subset of diversity dogma, under the Progressives' Pro-Choice religion.

Ocasio-Cortez's arguments are all too one-sided: she speaks to women and to only certain women in this country. To be more specific, she speaks to privileged women obsessed with undoing what they call the "patriarchy" and in particular she and liked-minded women are obsessed with undoing Donald Trump's power. I truly wonder whether O-C - like Hillary - loathes men in general.

Or maybe I just laughed it off. I can't remember which.

What a bonfire of double standards: A man uses crude language about a woman. What is the lesson drawn by Rebecca Traister?

Ted Yoho's insults toward Representative Ocasio-Cortez mean that he doesn't respect any woman. Naturally, using the same "logic" it means that it is a "men" problem, since all men are responsible for the actions of any one man.
