Both Delta and United Airlines reported they were losing $40 million a day throughout the second quarter. United's revenues fell 87%. The NYC subway system is reportedly at a $16-billion deficit. That's billion with a B. The government, via the Federal Reserve which should actually have nothing to do with this, is working to keep these systems afloat, for better or worse. But the fantasies of liberals that mass transit is the answer to anything are about to be crashed forever. What the airline industry will look like, I have no idea. We are opening up to a world that has changed in ways we don't even know yet. But many of the changes have already happened. We are going to have to see what they are, catch up, and adjust.

Well, Kai Akker, even more changes. There's no possible way any professional sports league, NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, can possibly generate enough revenue to cover payroll and fixed costs- for those that actually own their stadiums. (For cities- city owned stadiums and sports arenas are a huge tax eating white elephant right now.) They're all going to end up bankrupt by the end of the year. I don't even know what their player contracts call for- they may be obligated for salaries as long as the players themselves aren't on strike. Movie theater chains are all going to go bust- Will a newly formed company buy theater assets and show movies when we can all gather freely again? Of is it too much risk. Movie production companies aren't getting any revenue from big summer hits- as there aren't any being shown. ALL entertainment venues and companies are bankruptcy candidates.
We might be approaching the point where at the end of covid restrictions an actual Debt Jublilee is a realistic option. I had never heard of such a thing until a year or so ago, but there is a Debt Jubilee movement. No idea how big it actually is or whether it has a growing number of adherents. I'm skeptical of how it would work since savings are a form of debt- where the bank owes you instead of the other way around.

It reads like hyperbole but it's all true. So when do they give back their Pulitzers?
A debt jubilee could be a good thing to use to address a rise in debt due to a short term economic problem. If the US economy doesn't fully reopen soon the current economic problem will not be short term. Of course, you shouldn't announce the debt jubilee prior to the resolution of the crisis that is driving up debt - that will just create an incentive to take on more debt.
But the facts are sourced from a Rockefeller Institute report that miscounts what states receive. In truth, high-tax blue states are net “receivers” of federal funds, New York foremost among them.
The Rockefeller Institute’s “Giving or Getting?” report was published in 2017 and used soon after in a widely publicized Associated Press “fact check.” Since then, the report and its subsequent installments have served as the backbone of countless treatises like Paul Krugman’s sunny “The Moochers of Middle America.”
"a Debt Jubilee movement. No idea how big it actually is or whether it has a growing number of adherents. I'm skeptical of how it would work since savings are a form of debt- where the bank owes you instead of the other way around." [Gospace]
Good points on the sports leagues and theaters. We've just crossed theaters off our list entirely. On the debt jubilee, which is mentioned in the Bible -- although as I understand it there is a question as to whether one ever actually occurred -- it's just a method of shifting the loss from the borrower to the lender.
Presumably the lender has more resources and can afford it. But as you say, banks owe their depositors. Who takes the losses when one goes under, on Wall Street or on Main Street? Suddenly it looks like shades of 2008-09 again. Some bank bail-ins in Europe have included depositors as losers in the write-offs and reorganizations. And then there is the moral hazard of a Jubilee.
I don't think it's the answer, Gospace, but I doubt we will ever see one, myself. If you can't pay your loan, you lose your collateral. It seems simple and logical. Yes, the consequences can be painful at some level even for those not directly involved. But ever more bailing-out is throwing good money after bad.

Correction: Those are people who died WITH Covid, not necessarily OF Covid.
The scandal of Covid will probably stay hidden. How a few Democrat governors killed 50,000 old people in nursing homes. Now, we see a campaign, driven by money, to maximize diagnoses and, if possible, deaths due to this virus even if they are unrelated.
Some of us have heard of gunshot wound deaths attributed to covid. We are also hearing of people who registered to be tested but went home untested and were subsequently notified they are positive.
I was in Tucson Medical Center last week having a lung lobe removed and was chatting with the nurses. I commented that I had read that TMC got $19,000 extra for each diagnosis admitted. No, they assured me, It was $40,000.
The numbers have been inflated so many times we will never find the truth.
Our local paper in AZ has reported that every time a person is retested [so he/she can go back to work] and is found positive, it is counted as a new case. Now, we know these algorithms could be easily corrected for that but we know why they won't be.
Clearly the case count is being inflated, and since it is being used to hurt Trump, nobody in the press is curious. The death count is all we really have to go on, and of course it is imperfect, but it suggests that the case count is lower than reported. It can be checked against excess deaths. But you guys want it both ways, you want to say that the disease is less deadly because so many people have it and so the fatality rate is lower and you want to say that the number of cases is exaggerated.
Excess deaths are coming back to earth, but they are still happening. It’s a shame that this has been so politicized that we will never know what is really happening. The plan is to bewilder us, and it is succeeding. They are keeping us in the dark and feeding us bullshit.
