I wonder if there’s a way to check it out. Saw an unattributed Facebook comment that said the nursing home deaths Dictator Cuomo caused will save the state about $4 billion a year in pension and Medicaid costs. I am certain it saves something, as well as reducing social security payments- but how much? Is $4 billion within an order of magnitude? That would make it a correct answer to a “Femi Question”. Or is it much smaller or bigger?

An open book unfolds, under moderation, so I am uninfluenced by my fellow posters. I am at sea. Adrift in a node of a mode, a shell without a nucleus, with least probability. How am I to survive the horrible threat to my life of death by crono virus? Conan, what is greatest in life? to be isolated in my bedroom. to drive other people away from me. To hear the lamentations of the girls who want to do me. but I can't because it would expose me to crono.

Mary Trump informs me that psychologists just try to hurt me.

It is so easy to be a victim. Yet I am not a child.

What a great day. I may sleep on the upper deck tonight. Tweaked my back working out yesterday. Mrs. srevew will sleep much better without me grunting and groaning nearby. Going to see if I can manage a bike ride tomorrow. Late afternoon beach visit is on order too. Here's drink you may like:

2oz Plantation 5 yr aged rum
1/2 oz demerara simple syrup
1 oz fresh lime juice (the juice from 1/2 a lime)

Put in a shaker with ice, shame well, serve in a short cocktail glass.

Bolton's book is insufferable. I think the publisher forgot to include the first chapter, the one where he desciribed advising God on how to organize heaven and complaining that, like Trump, God was not paying attention.

However, I did finish the entire book, thanks mostly to not much else to do this summer.

oh those dam ChiComs!

"China’s Three Gorges Dam is at severe risk of breaking. The chinese Communists hailed the massive dam as a “1000-year dam” once constructed in 2003. CCP messaging this week is now calling it a “100-yr dam in a 200-yr flood”. They are telling the people to prepare for collapse.
The scary reality is that the overwhelming majority of chinese (and therefore US) pharmaceutical production is located on the Yangtze River just below the creaking dam. If it breaks, it could be a catastrophe for the people of china AND the United States"

What an apposite allegory for the failure of the CCP. If the 3 Gorges fails-then it will be symbolic of the failure of their system, their foundations, their credibility, their competence and the support that they have in their country. Their entire charade of cards will fall. per @ArthurFleckEsq

There are some pictures of the dam that look like it has a bulge where the concrete has deformed. That looks pretty serious to me.

One of the reasons for the dam is because the Yangtze regularly floods and kills millions of Chinese when it does. For example, it flooded in 1931 and 150,000 people drowned. Total deaths from flood and aftermath may have been in the millions.

The flood of 1998 killed 4,000 or so.

And virtually ALL of our pharmaceuticals come from China, though I did not know how much from Yangtze.

You need a Tylenol? It will likely come from Puerto Rico or Lancaster PA. But the acetaminophen active ingredient comes from China 100%.

No Acetaminophen, no tylenol. And a lot of other much more critical drugs too.

As a matter of national security we need to reshore our pharma industry ASAP.

Even if the dam does hold and even if it doesn't wipe out the supply chain, China can stop the flow at any time. "Hey, US, you want to complain about the Uighar genocide? NO DRUGS FOR YOU!!!"

I just published an article on this in Packaging Digest Magazine.

yup.

Carrying a rabbit foot in one's pocket is as likely to slow the spread of Kung Flu as any mask.

That applies both to the person wearing the mask and the other people who are supposed to be protected.

Most of these N-95 masks have a vent in them. While most of the air breathed in is filtered for very large particulates, NONE of the exhaled air goes through the filter. It ALL goes straight out the vent.

Those flat paper masks? Some filtration for very large particulates but 98% of the exhalation goes out the sides and top.

Narciso's link goes to a tweet about a NY Times map showing that states with higher mask wearing have higher transmission.

Here's the direct link

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/17/upshot/coronavirus-face-mask-map.html

I could see the map without a subscription.

Narciso @ 9:56, I believe it. When I left AZ on May 31 nearly everyone there was wearing masks in stores. Through NV the rate of mask-wearing seemed to decline as I went northward. Idaho about 50%. Wyoming, I saw no one wearing a mask. Same in most of Montana. Washington state is pretty stringent, mostly due to strict state laws. It would be interesting to find out how the virus is really transmitted. ;-)

"Saw an unattributed Facebook comment that said the nursing home deaths Dictator Cuomo caused will save the state about $4 billion a year in pension and Medicaid costs."

Let's do some math. Let's say 10,000 nursing home patients died, and they average 2 years in the home if they don't die of COVID. That around probably 10k x $50k x 2 in cost directly to the state- or $1 billion dollars on Medicaid expenditures alone out of NY's pocket. So, within a magnitude, definitely.

I'm involved in a slow-motion text conversation about COVID with my 21-year-old daughter who is living near her college. She seems determined to see everything about the way the US has handled this crisis in the worst possible light, much like several commenters here. Our latest topic was about masks, and I tried to explain to her how badly the so-called "experts" have damaged their credibility during this time.

I wasn't getting much traction, then I realized I had the perfect example: hydroxychloroquine. The press went all-in on condemning this 65-year-old drug because Trump said it looked promising. As a result, some states even banned it's used! Well:

https://twitter.com/gummibear737/status/1283840177497088001

At this point, treating with HCQ + azythromycin (sp?) + zinc at earliest possible time from onset of symptoms shows uniformly excellent results with very little side effects, which makes sense because the course of treatment is so short. The graph that leads off that Twitter thread is really striking.

Yet here in the US, there are still millions of people who wouldn't take HCQ if it was prescribed for them, just because Trump talked about it. That's insane.

If the we had an honest media, and a more mature political class, things would be going so much better. Things are actually not going so badly now -- AZ hospitalizations have peaked, and cases are falling as well. Viruses are gonna virus, and we ARE getting through this. Early treatment can drastically reduce deaths and the number of people suffering long-term effects. With that knowledge, state and local governments should be able to encourage citizens that it's OK to open up, but because everything is so politicized here, they won't. Many feel it's to their political advantage to stay shut down until the election, even though that makes no sense at all.

And, knowing the HCQ + Az + Zinc treatment protocol is so effective should calm the fears of parents, teachers, and administrators about the re-opening of schools.

All of this is SO GOOD, but I'm a voice in the wilderness, commenting on a blog on a Saturday night.

Many other governments are either openly or quietly encouraging disinvestment from China.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-08/japan-to-fund-firms-to-shift-production-out-of-china

Japan has earmarked $2.2 billion of its record economic stimulus package to help its manufacturers shift production out of China as the coronavirus disrupts supply chains between the major trading partners.

The extra budget, compiled to try to offset the devastating effects of the pandemic, includes 220 billion yen ($2 billion) for companies shifting production back to Japan and 23.5 billion yen for those seeking to move production to other countries, according to details of the plan posted online.

An interesting book for summer reading - on Amazon Kindle -

"Mine Were of Trouble" - Peter Kemp

A memoir of an Englishman serving on the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War, with the Carlists and the Legion, from 1936-38. There are quite a lot of these about foreigners serving on the Republican side (Orwell for one), but very few (in English) about the Nationalists.

The thing is a personal worms eye view of it, all about the nitty gritty of service, of personalities, of trench warfare, of daily incidents, what it felt like for a soldier on that side. But Kemp had friends in high places as well, being well connected with the foreign press and thus well known to the Nationalist leadership. Generally the Nationalists come across as no-nonsense professionals, but...

"Don Gonzalo de Aguilera, Conde de Alba de Yeltes, Grandee of Spain, was a hard-bitten ex-cavalryman of what I believe is known as ‘The Old School’. That is to say, he was a personal friend of King Alfonso XIII, a keen polo player and a fine sportsman; he spoke English, French and German perfectly (he told me that he had a Scottish mother); although widely traveled he was no absentee landlord, but spent the greater part of his time looking after his estates near Salamanca; he was widely read, very knowledgeable about literature, history and science, with a brilliant if eccentric intellect and a command of vituperation that earned him the nickname during the Civil War of El Capitán Veneno (Captain Poison).

Loyal friend, fearless critic and stimulating companion that he was, I sometimes wonder if his qualities really fitted him for the job he was given of interpreting the Nationalist cause to important strangers. For example, he told a distinguished English visitor that on the day the Civil War broke out he lined up the labourers on his estate, selected six of them and shot them in front of the others—‘Pour encourager les autres, you understand.’

From Yahoo News 7/17:

If you are sick enough with COVID-19 to be admitted to a hospital intensive care unit, your chances of survival are much better today than they were a few months ago, researchers report in the journal Anaesthesia. The British study analyzed all published research from around the world on COVID-19 ICU deaths among adults, and it found the fatality rate dropped from 60 percent of ICU patients at the end of March to 40 percent in May, a 33 percent drop. The ICU death rate was more or less constant across all continents.

If the Three Gorges goes, China will not start a war. There's no dam in America whose failure would cause a similar catastrophe, no three dams. But the Chinese built-in a margin of safety and, though this is being approached, I'll bet it's just nerves that makes them say "maybe the margin wasn't enough."
