Bojack Horseman showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg has also expressed regret over Diane’s casting, recently explaining his decision on Twitter and telling Vulture in 2018, “I allowed myself to believe that the world of animation was a little different than the world of live action. It is in some ways, but that’s not really a good excuse.” Bojack Horseman wrapped up its sixth and final season in January 2020.So it's all over. No going back. Might as well express regret. Maybe he just regrets that he casually stuck a Vietnamese name on the character. Was there anything really "represent[ative] the Vietnamese-American community" about Diane Nguyen on "Bojack Horseman"?!
How awful for these artists to cave to manipulation to disavow their own good work! I'm guessing Bob-Waksberg originally thought it was cool to use a Vietnamese name for a character without it meaning anything more than just a little casual diversity. He didn't know he would bite him in his Horseman ass one day.
Here's an interview with Bob-Waksberg from September 2018 (also at Vulture):
[Y]ou talked about the casting of Alison Brie as Diane Nguyen as the “original sin” of the show. Would you do things differently if you were casting now?A show that has all white people in the main cast is inappropriate. Inappropriate!
Yes... The issue of diversity in general is a little different than a white person playing an Asian person. I do want to be careful to keep those conversations somewhat distinct even though they are absolutely related. One thing I would do differently outside of Diane is, I don’t want to have a show that has all white people in the main cast. I think that is inappropriate.
I don’t know how else to say it. I think that it is bad politically, but I also think it is bad creatively. It leads to a less interesting show, and that was a mistake. It's like a gun-to-the-head confessional. I love the utter bullshit of the assertion that the core motivation is to be interesting. If all your characters are white, it's less interesting!
So that is 100 percent something I would do differently. And the other thing is, I would not cast a white person to play an Asian character. That is also something that is inappropriate. I knew at the time that it was somewhat inappropriate, but I don’t think I realized quite what it meant and what I was doing, and I allowed myself to believe that the world of animation was a little different than the world of live action. It is in some ways, but that’s not really a good excuse. Is anyone anticipating an honest answer here?
What shifted your thinking?
I will say, you [i.e., E. Alex Jung] shifted my thinking somewhat. The podcast you did with Aisha [Harris], you said something that really stuck with me, because up until that point the general criticism I’d seen of the character from Asian people was, “It’s really great to have this nuanced, fully formed, Asian-American character who is not a stereotype, but it’s a bummer that she’s played by a white actress and it’s hard to separate from that. That’s an asterisk.” And one of the things you said on the podcast really surprised me because it was not that. [It] was that, if you knew you had Alison Brie in the show, why didn’t you just make her a white character? The idea that having another white character would have been better than this odd approximation of what an Asian-American character is shook me, surprised me, and made me really think of it in a different way. It made me realize, “Oh, this is hurtful. It’s not just a bummer or inconvenient or not ideal. This is bad.” I’m still grappling with that and what I can do now to fix it....Yeah, it's too late to just give the character a non-race-specific name, but he (as I suspected, above) wishes he'd done just that.
Does it surprise you how quickly this conversation around race and voice-acting has accelerated?Yikes. He switched to referring to Asian-Americans as Asian! He needed more Asians in the room — he says now, now that it's too late to have just made Diane a white woman, and even as he's acknowledging that going for more Asians in the room also feels shitty. By the way, the main character is a horse. What race is the horse? Why not make them all animals?
No, the opposite. I was prepared to have this conversation when season one dropped, and I was surprised that it didn’t happen then.... I thought what we were doing was colorblind casting. I really did, and because of that, I wasn’t actively looking for people of color, and then it turns out we had a bunch of white people. Moves need to be made to be more inclusive. One way to go about that is setting ground rules for yourself, such as, “If you have a character of color it’s going to be voiced by a person of color.” That feels like a great step one.
I still struggle with the question of “Should Diane just be a white woman?” I always wonder, what is Asian-American? There’s a multiplicity of answers, but for me it’s a feeling of recognition where I see it and I know it. When I’m considering the “original sin,” it’s not about casting as much as it’s about the writers room. The fact that there weren’t Asian writers in the room the past season is what I come back to. Do you see that as a weakness of the show that needs to be addressed? I realize that even raises a boatload of other concerns like, “Oh, we need to hire the Asian person to write about Asianness,” which also feels shitty....
I have a policy of not firing writers without cause. If I look at a room and it’s all white people — and we’ve never had an all-white writers room — but let’s say we had a room that’s mostly white people and I go, “Oops, I’m not happy about this,” I don’t feel comfortable not asking one of those writers back to make room for an Asian writer....Yeah, because that would be overt employment discrimination. I wonder if when he looks in the mirror and sees a white man, he goes “Oops, I’m not happy about this.”
In a Tumblr post back in the day, you wrote about how “male” is often prefigured as “default” whereas “female” isn’t. It also makes me think about neutrality with regards to race, too, and how whiteness is often seen as neutral. Do you see BoJack as white? He's talking about a horse. A horseman.
I don’t, although I understand that he can be read that way, and in certain ways he’s coded as white.
I don’t consciously write him that way, although I think there are more white people he is like than other people. I would like people to bring their own reads on him. Someone once told me that she saw BoJack as a black man, as a black person herself, because she felt like she really related to the idea that he was the one horse on his show, and that he doesn’t have any horse friends, and he’s “the one who made it.” I can’t say, “Yes, that’s right, that’s what we’re doing,” but I love that interpretation, and so I’m happy for people to make their own reads on it.... What does “race” mean in a world where animals exist? What does it mean to be a black American or an Asian-American when there are also anteaters walking around? What does it mean to be a black American or an Asian-American when there are also anteaters walking around?

I wonder if it is actually the case that he "understands" that. Did Winston "understand" that five is four?
The Stratford Festival routinely casts black actors in white roles. Is that ended? What about black singers in opera?
So that should also mean that only white actors of the same ethnicity of the character can voice them (or portray them in live action), and so on.
Tribalism is the death of creativity.
"represent the Vietnamese-American community accurately and respectfully"
"It's important that cartoons about talking horses are accurate and respectful." -- Mr. Ed
Q: Is a struggle session more respectful to the horse community if the deeply repentant struggler is wearing a straight-jacket?
If all casting must be racially appropriate, why is Hamilton acceptable?
When I was growing up in the 1960s, the word Oriental was commonly used when referring to people and features of Japan, China, Vietnam, etc.
Recently, however, my liberal brother informed me angrily that the word Oriental is racist. Now the correct word is Asian.
About ten years from now, the word Asian likewise will be denounced as racist. Some other word will become the correct word.
I'm offended that they used a human male as the voice for Mr. Peanutbutter, a yellow lab.
When you do not have a vital realistic philosophy on which you stand, the very foundation for how you interact with the world, you are easily swayed to move to whatever the mob tells you to. If your belief system cannot stand up to the illogic of others, what do you actually believe in? Who are you? Why are you?
My favorite racial miscasting has always been Alec Guiness playing a Japanese businessman in A Majority Of One (1961).
Did you know there were Spanish language adaptations of some of the Charlie Chan movies? Wrap your woke brain around that!
So now I am waiting for Hamilton to appropriately cast its performances. I hope there is tremendous pressure to do this. Make them live up to their own rules.
The people pushing this don’t seem to understand they are pushing minority actors and images out of roles and advertising. Why put up with all this crap.
The woke left of today is nearly identical to the bluenose Puritans of yesteryear who wanted to ban certain types of art as just being totally unacceptable in polite society. My entire life it has been progressive artists and their supporters who have pushed back against this kind of censorship -- artists define the art. Now think about this new cancel culture: you're allowed to have a drama (or comedy) based on actual historical figures, but the casting of that drama must be sensitive to "diversity" questions. It's okay for a person of color to play a historical entity who is not a person of color; but it's not okay for a person who is not a person of color to play a historical entity who was a person of color; and it often may be not okay for a person who is not a person of color to play a historical entity who was not a person of color. (Yes you read that right.) I know this kind of limiting is not good for art, or for culture in general. I highly doubt that it is good for minorities as a group, but perhaps it makes more roles available to actors of color who otherwise are not talented enough to get acting gigs.
A woman does the voice of Bart Simpson.
No one cares.
@Mike Sylwester: For what it's worth, my Chinese niece objects to referring to people as "Asian". She thinks they should be referred to according to their country of origin, not the entire continent.
I saw the entire Bojack Horseman series on Netflix. It was very good, and the writers have nothing to apologize for. The Alison Brie character wasn't particularly Vietnamese. Her character was more like a quirky Jewish or WASP intellectual woman. It was the comic conceit of the show that her father and brothers were stereotypical Boston Southies, read Irish-Americans. They were portrayed as louts. Was their portrayal thus a harmful stereotype of Southies or of Vietnamese. Should the show have hired Vietnamese actors to imitate the accents of Boston Irish Southies? For God's sake, it's a cartoon.
These people's careers are based on networking and being professionally "likeable," which of course is unrelated and often antithetical to being respectable as a person.
What about black singers in opera?
Well, that leaves Otello and Monostatos, and little else. Not much to build a career on. Good luck casting a correct production of Butterfly, Turandot, or Mikado.
I am so offended that Bojack is being voiced by a human. The Equine-American community needs to stand up and be counted. I have two cats here who have some thoughts regarding Princess Caroline, but they're going to have grow some thumbs before they can take over this keyboard.
Limits. I haz 'em.
The idea that whites have just been rubbing everyone the wrong way - because they can - never occurs to you guys.
You fixed your racist laws but not your racist culture - and you think it's normal and now feel sad it's disappearing.
I told you it would disappear, didn't I? Did I let any of your arguments change my mind - even after years? No. Why?
Because you were wrong.
You simply don't take white people's crimes seriously as crimes.
That's your problem.
I'm glad that Alison Brie's husband is standing by her in this moment of travail. A lesser man would divorce her. I don't know if her children will be allowed to grow up in such an environment. Perhaps they should be put in foster care until such time as her re-education is completed.
Photography, sound recording, movies, videography, computers, etc. we’re ALL invented by whites. POC had nothing to do with it, at least early on. Some POC, mostly Asians, contributed later, but these things would NOT EXIST without whites. POC shouldn’t be allowed to be involved in any of this. It’s cultural appropriation —THEY DIDN’T BUILD THAT!
Futurama was on the right track: make enough characters aliens and robots and anyone can “voice” them. Better than animals, because you have to be careful with Arabian Horses, Pandas, or animals from Africa.
Does this mean only whites can do white characters? If so, there goes Hamilton.
Or do we just have a new double standard?
1) Bojack can't possibly NOT be white, considering how ultra-WASPy his parents and especially grandparents are portrayed.
(to be clear, given the show we're discussing: they are also horse-people, not wasps)
2) This is the end result of cultural Marxism. It is impossible for Bob-Waksberg to have done all the right things, as you can tell from his tortured ruminations on what he might have done differently. He can never change the skin color he sees in the mirror. If he were black, it would be fine for him to have an all-black show and all-black writers' room. It would likely be celebrated. The natural tendency we all have to identify first with those most like us isn't a sin -- although it is good to work at overcoming bias. The sin is being deliberately exclusionary, which I don't believe for a moment was Bob-Waksberg's intention.
3) It's ok to be white.
People always ask "How did German's allow the Nazi's to take power?"
You are seeing it play out in real time.
DeBlasio is still hunting down jewish kids going to school and still attending BLM protests.
So, should Yundi Li, in my opinion the best contemporary Chopin interpreter, be allowed to play the Nocturnes? Li is Chinese. How can he possibly understand and interpret the great patriotic hero of Poland?
Perhaps Thu Le, an extraordinary Vietnamese guitarist (and equally extraordinary beauty), should be prohibited from playing Bach, the very epitome of German artistic genius? (I've been corresponding with Ms. Le. She's a very generous and gracious woman.)
Of course, the Rolling Stones should be prohibited from playing the blues, right?

Moreover, very few roles will be available for the minority races?
Question, what is the acting profession now about? This entire 'tribalism' process is dividing us in the name of what?
Amazing, I thought that real persons (not this theoretical B.S. by race hustlers) marrying minorities has being going on for generations. Now the 'race hustlers' are asking the progeny to pick sides.
These people are nuts and are dividing our society for what?
In related news, Hollywood has announced that in the future, and TV or movies with space aliens in them must cast actual space aliens in those roles.
Similarly, any vampire movies must cast actual vampires in those roles.
I am happy to have never watched BoJack Horseman, and therefore can claim I was boycotting it at the time and I am so woke.
These apologies are soooooo creepy. Just do the casting differently from now on and move on.
I became a fan of Alison Brie by watching Community. What with Community and Bojack Horseman, she was the featured player in two of the most innovative and inventive shows to appear on tv in the last twenty years. She's the best comic actress of her generation... I followed her over to GLOW, another show on Netflix. It's ostensibly a show about professional female wrestlers. Imagine my horror when I discovered that it's not about professional female wrestlers but rather contemporary feminist and LBGQT issues. Sure the girls wear leotards and there's the odd nude scene, but mostly it preaches politically correct lessons about feminist or LBQT issues.....It has some snappy dialogue and explores some themes that are not shown elsewhere, but many of the plot hooks are contrived and manipulative. In this the show suffers from comparison with Community and Bojack Horseman which both poke fun at contrived and predictable tropes.
I guess Futurama's Bender character should have been voiced by a real robot. Stewie by a real baby. Brian by a real dog. And so on.
""I now understand that people of color should always voice people of color. We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese-American community...""
Why? Why should only POC voice - or act - roles of POC? If a character is gay, may only a gay person play that role? If a character is married, may only a married person play that role? If a character is conservative, or radically liberal, or a nazi, or a marxist (great deal of overlap in those last two) may only a conservative, radical liberal, nazi, or marxist play those roles? How does that make any sense? And where do we find these actual nazis to play nazis?
Being able to understand, empathize with, and take on the role of person other than oneself is called "acting." When done well, it's a wonderful art form.
This isn't about POC. It's about power.

In GLOW, she plays a gritty ingenue. Her character has an abortion, sleeps with her best friend's husband, and wears an unattractive hairstyle. I prefer my ingenues less gritty. She was very appealing in Community, but this is not a star turn....The show does explore some unexplored territory. There's the relationship between the Queen Bee and her satellites. Alison plays the satellite role to her best friend's Queen Bee. Hence the sleeping with her best friend's husband.
I'm still trying to wrap my brain around cartoon characters having ethnicity.
Why draw the line at skin color? Russians should have voiced Boris and Natasha.
Don't even ask about moose and squirrel.
It's called "acting" even if using your voice. Especially if your voice isn't even "ethnic".
Eagle vs Shark (2007) has a New Zealander telling an Australian dialect joke.
They'll have to change that.
How awful for these artists to cave to manipulation to disavow their own good work!
***********
YES! I am a huge fan of animation (exception anime - just can't get into it). The whole point of voice acting is that you can sound like *all kinds* of people. Young people voice older people. Women do the voices of young boys. FFS! FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!
If SJW/PC comes for The Venture Bros. THAT IS THE LAST STRAW. There will be blood.
we, the colored people, newly emancipated and rejoicing in our blood-bought freedom, near the close of the first century in the life of this Republic, have now and here unveiled, set apart, and dedicated a monument of enduring granite and bronze
It's "colored people". That was then, with progress, it's "people of color". Diversity, not limited to racism, denies individual dignity and normalizes color judgments. Then there are 1/2 or fractional Americans (e.g. Fetal-Americans) who are denied a voice, arms, a head etc altogether for the sake of social progress and medical progress (e.g. Planned Parenthood), too.
A Vietnamese-American character with no discernible accent? How terribly regressive. A fresh off the boat stereotype ching-chonging her way through the dialogue? Now that's progress!
I'm still trying to wrap my brain around cartoon characters having ethnicity.
Same way literary characters do.
I've been musing on how this logic could more or less be applied to the animators working on the show. Should a white person be allowed to draw a black person? After all, there's a history of white people drawing racist caricatures of black people. A black artist could more authentically draw a black character based on their lived experience. We don't want animated black face. And those white animator jobs could have gone to a black person! We need better representation in our artist rooms.
It sounds ridiculous, but there was just a YA author named Alexandra Duncan who pulled her own book. The reason was she is white and wrote a story about the Gullah Geechee (a group I was unfamiliar with, which is funny because the author was accused of erasing the group). So, apparently, white people aren't allowed to write about black people, so I can't see why white people being barred from drawing black people isn't far behind.
Of course, the real problem with my line of thinking here is that the animators are probably mostly Korean, but I think you get the gist.
How many of the "white" writers were Jewish? It would be harder for Bob-Waksberg (who is Jewish) to disparage himself and his fellow writers if he had to be specific and call it a "problem" that there were "too many" Jews in the room? The word "white" is covering this aspect of the story. It's possible that Bob-Waksberg feels vulnerable as a Jew and is calling himself "white" not because he's covering up but because he's taking cover.
Does this groveling ever work? They all should just ignore the 0.01% who give a shit. You are not an artist if some small group of fascists in a free country can tell you how to do your art. You are just a tool, a thing, a place holder, and that ain't art. It's really the opposite of it, and the opposite of art's highest calling.
Self-defense tip: If you act like food, they will eat you.
When does James Earl Jones apologize for being the voice of Darth Vader?
It won’t be long before the only art will be underground. The difference between art and propaganda is simple to define. Art is the ‘propaganda' produced by a diversity (in the true sense of the word) of viewpoints, so that we might sift among them. When only one viewpoint is allowed, art loses it’s mission to explore ideas and becomes a vehicle to hector the populace in the catechisms of the powerful elites. All of its emotional force becomes hollowed by it’s overweening need to cosset the intellectual curiosity of the people.
What used to be entertainment has become a pageant of morality plays, each designed to instruct the deplorables and to validate the beliefs of the faithful. I tried to watch the PGA yesterday and nope, no escape from being instructed to explain to my children why a division of the Democrat pac ActBlue, that is Black Lives Matter (TM) is right to foment riots against, among other things, the concept of private property.
The Eurovision movie is great though, even though Will Ferrel is constantly denouncing the United States, it looks in the end like a parody of European disgust with the US, but anyway, I enjoyed it, and you know what? Europeans have 3,000 years of art and history since the fall of Troy and the Bronze Age collapse to explore artistically. Fine. It’s great stuff. Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Goethe, Moliere, Cervantes, Nietzsche, Camus, Twain, Wilde, on and on and on and on. It’s a vast artistic playground we are privileged to enjoy as our cultural patrimony. Of course none of this art could be officially sanctioned, but where art is sanctioned, garbage is the norm. Look at public sculptures, why aren’t we tearing these things down if they get to tear down statues?
I caught a production of Guys and Dolls last summer at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. (Has it been burned down yet?) The staging, singing, dancing, etc, was uniformly excellent, and, unlike many productions it was not overmic-ed.
However, the production was marred by ‘woke’ casting- a fat woman was one of the Hot Box dancers, and a woman was cast as “Big Julie” the “in from out of town” gambler. Worst of all was the casting of a black guy as Nathan Detroit - I don’t think Damon Runyon’s 50’s gansters would have gone for an interracial romance. Non-traditional casting is less annoying on stage than in movies, as the medium of the theater is less realistic, but the thought occurred, that these casting decisions were made to poke the eyes of the suburbanites that came into see the show. Theater strikes me as a ‘business’ where the producers of the product have contempt for many of their customers.
Any of you interested in backing my all-white musical about the civil rights movement? Working title: “I Have a Dream!”, possibly with Daniel Radcliffe as MLK. Sure to be a hit!
"We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese-American community..."
Sorry, but that is just straight up racism. Vietnamese people are not all the same. You know, just like other people. You cannot have any single character fairly represent any entire race or ethnicity without doing a stereotype, so just stop pretending that's a real thing. This is what I've been saying about modern progressivism. By nature it must eventually "progress" to the opposite of any past values it may have held.
Any artist should see that the people attacking them are dummies, incapable of appreciating their work, and their values. Why would you submit to such people? Oh, right - money.
I just finished watching "The Great" on Hulu. Loosely based on the story of Catherine the Great. Wide range of races cast in this period piece, that was humorous and did not take itself too seriously. I am too lazy to look up whether it was likely there were interracial marriages in Russia in the 1700's or Africans that managed to snag a powerful spot at court or were noblemen in their own right. Or if any of the court administrators could have been from India. It worked - everyone was well cast and did a damn good job. Unless you are doing a historically accurate *documentary* - what does it matter? A good actor, whatever the race, should help you focus on the story.
In Seattle, years ago, I saw an African American man, loooong braids, playing classical violin on the street for $ from passers by. Well I guess I'll never see that again as the mob would probably rip the violin out of his hands and replace it with something more culturally appropriate.
I had been thinking about getting back into volunteer work but the incessant news of "no one is pure enough" is making me rethink bothering.
How awful for these artists to cave to manipulation to disavow their own good work!
Yep. It’s the overwhelming nature of these cultural purges that reveals how weak and cowardly these “artists” are. They are always quick to pose on social media as STANDING UP for various causes or allegedly marginalized people. But they won’t stand up for art. They won’t defend speech. They’ve abandoned the First Amendment as a safe-haven for all. Once you start down the NOT for everyone interpretation of our Bill of Rights you’ve broken American Exceptionalism. This is their goal.
Artists who believe in art and free expression will endure. I will support them. Woke “artists” will fade away. Right wing anti-intellectualism will be blamed. More “artists” will nod along.
Ain't segregation great? Water fountains in all the colors of the rainbow.
Cafeteria-style Leftism is not an option.
Althouse can pretend to support abortion, as above, but not this.
But that's not a political possibility even if she pretends it is.
She made her choice decades ago.
Wow. So does that mean Henry Winkler would not be able to play Fonzi today? Or DeNiro could not play the Irishmman?
How can James Earl Jones sleep at night, having provided the voice of Darth Vader? Time to voice regret?
I look forward to leftist lesbian Linda Hunt abasing herself at a Self-Criticism session for accepting an "Oscar for a Supporting Actress" for playing a Chinese MAN in "The Year of Living Dangerously".
Speaking of Jewish people in the room, did you see the some mob has gone after Cards Against Humanity?
Being Jewish is only sometimes being a minority these days.
Here’s the real question: are these Uber-Woke ‘artists’ surrendering their residuals? That’s the only way I’ll believe their pious mea culpas.
from now on these people will only be allowed to voice spineless jellyfish.

It's a cartoon.
I've always thought - regressive that I am - that these are actors who are ACTING. Acting a role? Pretending to be someone else? They're not real; they are fictional characters.
Bojack Horseman was one of the best written, most incisive shows that I've seen on TV. Hard to believe that this guy was running the show.
1) How many people will find the change unsettling enough that they no longer enjoy the show? Some, for sure. How many people who did not watch the show will now watch it? None, for sure. These shows sacrificed viewers for no good reason.
2) How far does this get taken? How finely will we split the identitarianism? Regions? Ethnic groupings? Accents? How about politics? Can a natural born Iranian American play an Iranian immigrant? Why? Why not?
The whole point of acting is that the actor pretends to be someone they aren't so that stories can be told and people entertained. How can that continue under the new oppressive regime? (Hint: any answer other than "it can't" embraces hypocrisy and discrimination.)

The casting couch always selects for the same type of person.
It is just the things that you give up that change.
It always seems to boil down to daddy issues.
It's "colored people". That was then, with progress, it's "people of color".
Back then if Latinos or Asians had stepped up to claim a part in that, the actual colored people as the term was understood at the time, i.e. Negroes, would have, I am sure, resented it violently.

All "art" that does serve the interests of the State will have the benefit of compulsory attendance.
Meanwhile The Simpsons has apologized for casting Caucasian actors in voiceover'd cartoon roles playing non-Caucasian characters. I'm not kidding.

Crack Emcee: "You simply don't take white people's crimes seriously as crimes." I have a hard time seriously entertaining the concept of a mismatch between a fictional animated character's race and the race of the actor performing that role to be a "crime."
In 1976 when I had command of a navy ship transiting from Sattahip to the Philippines, we rescued 77 Vietnamese boat people who were adrift in the South China Sea. Cambodian pirates had attacked them, throwing babies and children overboard one at a time until everyone gave up their hidden valuables, raping the women and girls, killing some of the men who objected, and then disabling their engine and leaving them to die. Remember, these were the same type of men who were making the "killing fields" a thing during the same period, so compassion was not a major factor in their makeup. The whole crew felt very satisfied in having saved these wretched people. It wasn't until very recently I realized that I was not actually saving these refugees, but brutally coopting their culture when I, a cis-gendered, privileged White male, intervened in a Southeast Asian affair. My sincere apology to those wretched souls who were forced to suffer my White fragility instead of being allowed to die with dignity at the hands of their fellow Southeast Asians. Tôi rât tiêc

One of the executive producers of the old "Andy Griffith Show" was named Amos Muzyad Yaqoob Kairouz, which sounds pretty typical of most experts on mid-20th century North Carolina society.
When I was growing up in the 1960s, the word Oriental was commonly used when referring to people and features of Japan, China, Vietnam, etc.
Speaking of that and representing the Vietnamese-American community accurately and respectfully, I'm not seeing any support for the black Lives Matter hysteria from the Mongoloid or Mestizo communities.
What's up with that?

So being politically incorrect is now a crime?
I suppose it was inevitable that offending the perpetually offended would become a punishable behavior.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but silence is violence.
Next there will now be outrage over the "Chinese Woman" Seinfeld episode. Donna Chang wasn't played by a Chinese woman.
I attend operatic and theatrical performances pretty regularly. Inter racial casting doesn't bother me at all. Part of the performance experience is suspending your disbelief.

The audience doesn't see a voice actor. Their appearance isn't a bonafide occupational qualification -- only their ability to voice the character.
According EEOC guidelines, an employer cannot discriminate based on race, unless there is a legitimate point of artistic creativity at risk. For example, a casting director for a movie can write a character spec that reads, "ethnically Vietnamese, female, medium height, fit."
But, a voice casting director can only include characteristics of their voice, because the actor isn't visible to the audience. This notion of casting voice actors based on race, is racist, and illegal.
The Hogan's Heroes revival is fucked.

The actual Vietnamese don't give a rats ass.
This is, as Ann noted above, an argument between Jews, wealthy Jews.
The offenders are Jews, and those doing the leaning on them for abject, humiliating confessions probably are as well.
Its Jew on Jew Red Guardism. Well, this case, but most of this stuff is not Jewish.
Its very disturbing to see how quickly society breaks down like this.
The Chinese had the excuse of it all being pushed by an evil totalitarian regime, and that it used clueless high school and even middle school kids for it, as proper soldiers and police would have thought it absurd. But this stuff is going on among old, rich people in America. There is something very awful going on.
Science Fiction with a large element of the Cultural Revolution period - "The Three Body Problem", Liu Cixin. The Red Guard part is the best thing in the novel, which is otherwise also very good SF.
@Prof Althouse,
It would be harder for Bob-Waksberg (who is Jewish) to disparage himself and his fellow writers if he had to be specific and call it a "problem" that there were "too many" Jews in the room?
Rest assured that day will come when the Wokerati will concern itself that there are "too many" Jews in the room. It happened in the Soviet Union.
A large fraction of the Jews in the countries/provinces that became the Soviet Union were pro-Soviet. They had been treated so horribly by the Tsarist government for generations and the Bolsheviks took immediate action to denounce antisemitism when they took over. Which way could it go but up?
When they became useful tools of state control, however, the old prejudices came back. This time, they came back dressed in the state ideology of the USSR, against which there was no defense. As Timothy Snider says in Bloodlands: "It took Hitler until mid-1943 to kill as many Jews as Stalin had already killed."
It amazes me how an American ethnicity that's at the top of the economic & educational pyramid can still believe itself as "Sticking It To The Man", but they do.
So there are 'whites' and there are 'POC's. And 'POC's are victims and as such have the right to lord it over 'whites'. If this mentality triumphs then it will mean the suicide of any multi-racial society and racism wil win the day.
Say what you will of an Hitler but at least he was honest in his racism.
And speaking of (neo)nazis, 'the crack' seems to have a case of p-envy. I does make me understand why I sometimes (sometimes, but more and more) see these comments on youtube where Beethoven, or Mozart (*), or the Greeks, or the 'Hebrews', ... are all black. Poor things the like of Crack have to do something to cover their emptiness.
(*) That was a new one. So why didn't people notice in Mozart's time. Well, because he wore a wig to hide his 'blackness'. Btw, in the case of Beethoven it simply was because white people are racist.
Most of the children's voices on commercials? Those are adults.
Damon Runyon was writing about the New York demimonde of the 1920's in "Guys and Dolls", and probably draws on much earlier material as he led a rather complex life. That world was already nearly gone by the time Broadway got to it. The book (a collection of short stories) is excellent btw, well worth a read, and it is easily available.
He wrote a very great deal more, and quite a bit of it has been repackaged on Kindle.
The problem with so much of this is that it is about vanished worlds, written for a vanished audience.
So are they getting a horse to voice Bojack?
RIP Annie's boobs.

Hey Crack, you better hurry and get your "Reparations" because the window is closing fast! Real flesh and blood people seem to have a different opinion about race, and actually are doing something about it by marrying someone they love of another race.
"In 1967, when miscegenation laws were overturned in the United States, 3% of all newlyweds were married to someone of a different race or ethnicity. Since then, intermarriage rates have steadily climbed. By 1980, the share of intermarried newlyweds had about doubled to 7%. And by 2015 the number had risen to 17%."
"...In 2015, that number [Interracial marriages] stood at 11 million – 10% of all married people..."

Putting the dubbing companies - and associated voice actors - out of business one day at a time.
I now understand that people of color should always voice people of color.
Why would that possibly be enough?
Shouldn't they also be written by a person of color, directed by a person of color, edited by a person of color, produced by a person of color, distributed by a person of color, and reviewed by a person of color?
Anything less would seem to be white interference in cultural communications they cannot possibly understand.

Damon Runyan Theater was a 1950s series of radio adaptations of Runyan's stories. Some of them are pretty good:

Rachael McAdams and Will Ferrel played Icelanders in the Eurovision movie. Look out. Piers Brosman too!
The Godfather pictures had real authenticity because it cast so many Italians, including actual Italian gangsters, in the leading roles. Nonetheless James Caan and Marlon Brando did fine with their roles. If you get too religious about casting, you're harming the production.... I guess white people are still interchangeable, but there are limits. I think Irish actors have a real flair for portraying English aristocrats, but Peter O'Toole could not have pulled off the Godfather role.....Most of Hollywood's great Nazi roles were played by Jews: Werner Klemperer, Otto Preminger, Conrad Veidt. It does seem a shame that real Nazis are not only not played by Nazis but rather the roles are given to people who are antithetical to their ideals and goals. The Nazis have got to start standing up for their rights.
So if a space alien in Sci Fi is voiced by a white, is that white supremacist?
And if the space alien is voiced by a POC, is that racist, or POC supremacist?
And if the alien race has different pleasure and reproductive methods than humans, is using an LGBTQ voiceover appropriate or cultural appropriation?
These games are fun, but only if you don't play for more than a few minutes, because the illogic and imbecility of the entire thing becomes apparent.
Maybe the old biblical story of the Tower of Babel can help us out here. A large mass of all kinds of people from different cultures got together to build a tower to heaven. After a time, members of the same culture all started started speaking in their native languages and pretty soon only other members of their individual tribes could understand what was being said. It was babble to everybody else. The result? The tower collapsed.
If it comes to be that in a nation of people who come from different cultures begin to abandon their common national culture in favor of their individual ethnic cultures, what was once a nation collapses.
Could it be that this is exactly what radical progressives think needs to happen before they can build their own peculiar vision of heaven.

African Americans are the most successful Africans in world history. They are among the world's leading artists and entertainers and writers and scholars and athletes and on and on. Incredible contributions to the world. If you combined their net worth it would one of the top ten richest "countries" in the world.
Yes, this was due to their hard work and talent and skill and energy. But they also had a country that offered them opportunities to show these skills, to develop themselves. It's a flawed country made up of flawed human beings - regardless of race - but it's a good place.
But no, America is a completely racist country where white people today are guilty for the injustices and crimes that other white people did hundreds of years ago. Or even yesterday.
This group guilt, this collective responsibility must be rejected. No race of people today is culpable for crimes did by some members of that race centuries ago. Or again, even yesterday. We are all responsible for our own acts and not those others simply because we have the same skin color.
Sorry, this race thinking is simply unacceptable. You're free to think it and I am free to denounce it. And no, the racist retort won't work.
One of Catherine the Great's admirals was black.
Ivan Gannibal, son of Peter the Great's page, and later general, Abram Gannibal. The father was retired at the time Ivan embarked on a very successful career in Catherines service, notably in the Russo-Turkish war of 1768, mainly in Greece. The same war in which my ancestor the Turkish Pasha of Smyrna was killed in action defending a fortress in Moldavia.
So there is a little bit of justification. Russia did have quite a lot of foreign officers in her service. One of them was the American, John Paul Jones. He probably met Gannibal, who was a very senior officer at the time.
1. Does this mean that CNN is exclusively for black people now, since James Earl Jones is the welcoming voice? Is that where this is headed?
2. People of color aside, what about females voicing male parts and vice versa? Is it allowed? Do they have to publicly announce how they identify to get the work to avoid accusations of gender-appropriation? What about cross-species characterizations, dogs, horses, etc? Will these be subtitled now?
3. Where the hell are they going to find people with bright yellow skin to voice the Simpsons characters now?
Damon Runyon was writing about the New York demimonde of the 1920's in "Guys and Dolls", and probably draws on much earlier material as he led a rather complex life
"Complex" doesn't begin to cover it. His life needs to be made into a movie (which no one would believe wasn't embellished.)
Gays can no longer play straight roles.
And where does that leave Hamilton?
Again the left adds to their bag of numerous standards they must shoulder.

My favorite racial miscasting has always been Alec Guiness playing a Japanese businessman in A Majority Of One (1961).
What, you missed Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"?
Top Ramen had changed it's Blue wrapped "Oriental Flavor" with "Soy Sauce" flavor about 2 years ago and I didn't even think twice about it but figured the word was now forbidden. They are owned by Nissan, a japanese company, so I am pretty sure they don't give two shits about the word use. They just want to sell ramen in america.
It is no surprise the entertainment business would be the first to make a buck out of being "woke" and will parade all sorts of meaningless virtue signaling until as it sinks further into irrelevance.
Thankfully the means to create entertainment has gotten cheaper and the distribution network only requires an internet connection now. There are billions to be made from sticking the PC progs in the eyes until they bleed.
Speaking of “Hogan’s Heroes”, the Germans were played by Jews.
Yeah, because that would be overt employment discrimination.
If you discriminate enough in advance it's all ok. I mean fine, didn't mean to be racist there.
@ Crack 6/29/20, 9:41 AM
And yet you still wonder why some of us ignore you.
Speaking of “Hogan’s Heroes”, the Germans were played by Jews.
So was the Frenchman.
buwaya: Many thanks for the history lesson! My German side of the family were "Germans from Russia". My Great Grandfather was in the Russian Army - post was guarding the construction of the Siberian Express. Decades ago I looked for books on the subject - I think it is time I revived that search. Thus actually relevant to my own history.
One of Catherine the Great's admirals was black.
Alexander Dumas' father was one of Napoleon's Marshals. His mother was a black slave in the Caribbean. He was mulatto. Dumas was quadroon.
Born in Saint-Domingue, Thomas-Alexandre was the son of the Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a white French nobleman and Marie-Cessette Dumas, an enslaved woman of African descent. He was born into slavery because of his mother's status, but his father took the boy with him to France in 1776 and had him educated. Slavery had been illegal in metropolitan France since 1315 and thus any slave would be freed de facto by being in the country.[4] His father helped Thomas-Alexandre enter the French military.
Crack,
You make an point -- a majority tends to rub a minority in the wrong way, often inadvertently.
However, the predominant color in the world is green, and the status quo is the largest majority.
Therefore, matters will settle down in a way that most benefits the status quo and the flow of money.
This is bad news for the historically marginalized. Just as the more more violent parts of mostly peaceful protests seem to burn down poor and minority neighborhoods while leaving richer areas miraculously untouched, so the new upheaval in entertainment and business. Unintended consequences fall most heavily on the shoulders least suited to bear them.
Thus, when Gone with the Wind is banished, Hattie McDaniel's Oscar-winning performance is diminished. Declare it gauche for white children to wear Black Panther costumes for Halloween, and you cut off a large segment of the market for such costumes. Marvel, on the other hand, will gladly sell spiderman costumes to customers of any skin tone.
These changes won't hurt Samuel L. Jackson. It is the upcoming actor -- of whom you have never heard, and of whom you never will hear now -- that loses out.
"It amazes me how an American ethnicity that's at the top of the economic & educational pyramid can still believe itself as "Sticking It To The Man", but they do."
Jews have traditionally made their way in Christian lands, and until recently in Muslim lands as well, by helping a wealthy minority to exploit a large underclass. They tend to do best when the ruling caste is socially distant and alienated from the underclass. It was generally the debt-ridden members of this exploited underclass that carried out pogroms, while the nobility protected the Jews who managed their own holdings. Nations in which the nobility began to feel a sense of community with the lower classes, typically due to shared language and culture, had a nasty tendency to expel the Jews. Even very secular Jews have a sense of being outsiders exploiting the larger culture they inhabit, rather than members of the culture in which they play an often dominant role. They prefer to see that culture divided into hostile factions, even if that means increased hostility to Jews.
I for one do not plan to consume any "woke" mainstream American entertainment from this point forward, as I believe it will be unwatchable.
Before "moving pictures" is was all blackface and crossdressers. Or books,
the reader sorted out race, ethnicity. So it was the consumer of the entertainment that was bigoted, for choosing their own kind when creating the characters in their minds eye.
This puts a nail in the coffin of the wokes desires for a black James Bond, or black Santa Clause.

BTW, gasbag, how about a list of approved non-Marxist Ike-whitewashing history books on late-WWII and the immediate postwar era, books that are free of anti-German bigotry, books that tell the troof about the Western Allies' crimes against the German people?
After that you can share your sources on the history of bloodthirsty, bloodsucking Jooos.

Perversely perhaps, I'm finally reaching the point where I just don't care any more. Even a couple of weeks ago you could probably have gotten me to admit that I might benefit from exploring, for instance, the 1619 Project - not because I felt any particular guilt over the actions of a bunch of people who got to this country centuries before my people, but because I did (and do) believe that I can't truly internalize the experience of someone who knows her ancestors were kidnapped and enslaved, and later ancestors were repeatedly denied their normal civil rights as citizens.
I still believe all that. But the recent penitential rites have rendered me callous. Yes, many American black citizens have had a rough go, and in the past were terribly sinned against. But I reject the idea that my confession and self-flagellation would help in any way.
Sorry, Crack. Nothing personal.
Dumas's dad was NOT a Marshal of France--just a general.
The Russian Imperial Army of 1914 had one Muslim general (race/ethnicity unknown). When the Russians took over most of Poland in 1815 the tsar acquired the patronage of the Order of St. Stanislaus, which could be issued with a cross emblem for Christian recipients and the Imperial eagle for non-Christians.
There was one mulatto who reached the rank of post Captain in the Royal Navy in the mid-1800s, but he served the entire time in the West Indies as I recall.
Pushkin had an Ethiopian grandfather IIRC and the house-servants of the Romanov family at the end were Black, imported from the USA (according to Sebag-Montefiore).
Speaking of Pushkin, in 1945 a quick-thinking and civilized Red Army officer hung a sign around a statue of Friedrich Schiller identifying him as "Germany's Pushkin."

This only works in one direction. Straight whites will only be able to portray themselves. You know damn well none of this will apply to whichever ethnic tribe is currently in favor...which is apparently the notwhites.
I love this one, John Wayne as Genghis Khan in The Conqueror (1956).
Is Aaron Paul toast because he voices "Todd Chavez"? Just wondering.

Notice how these bigots essentially say that all Asians look alike to them. That Asians are monolithic and have no real diverse cultural identity. Apparently, any Asian is acceptable to voice a Vietnamese character. That is racist.
What is a Vietnamese character supposed to sound like?
Most of the Vietnamese people I know sound American. A former co-worker who is Japanese sounds American. One Japanese actress I've seen a lot has a sultry Southern accent.
Folks rushing into racism in order to avoid a situation that is not-racist.

Futurama was on the right track: make enough characters aliens and robots and anyone can “voice” them. Better than animals, because you have to be careful with Arabian Horses, Pandas, or animals from Africa.
A question I posed elsewhere. And some one, of course, pointed out, would you dare let a black be the voice of a gorilla, chimpanzee, or monkey, of any type? Who can safely voice an animal? Do pandas have to be Chinese? Would Koalas be Australian of aboriginal? And, what the hell is an aboriginal accent? How about Pepe le Pew- is it acceptable for a skunk to be French? (BTW, the answer to that is, "Who Else?") Is Speedy Gonzalez even allowed to be shown? Reindeer- Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, or Eskimo? Or is that Inuit?
You guys never cared about all the blacks who never got work, so I really don't care about how you feel now that whites can't take our places.
Your apathy fucks you.
