"Days after Bon Appétit's editor in chief, Adam Rapoport, wrote in a May 31 newsletter that 'food is inherently political'..."

"... he again denied a pay raise for the only Black woman on the magazine's staff. Ryan Walker-Hartshorn... whose annual base salary is $35,300... had not received a pay increase in her tenure as Rapoport's assistant. Aside from her editorial duties, she said, she had cleaned Rapoport's golf clubs, fetched his son's passport, and taught his wife how to use Google Calendar. So, once again, the Stanford graduate asked for more money. 'I thought this conversation might be different this time,' Walker-Hartshorn said in a recent interview. After all, Condé Nast, the parent company of Bon Appétit, had just donated $1 million to racial-justice organizations amid global protests over the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.... Instead, Walker-Hartshorn says, Rapoport told her, 'Well, maybe you should consider that this is not the right job for you.' 'I am the only Black woman on his staff,' Walker-Hartshorn said. 'He treats me like the help.'"

From "Bon Appétit's editor in chief just resigned — but staffers of color say there's a 'toxic' culture of microaggressions and exclusion that runs far deeper than one man" (Business Insider).

Comparative advantage. The economics department secretary delivers papers to the dean even though the department head walks faster than she does.

Likewise numerous "help" tasks. The department head works while the help does errands. It's a legitimate use of corporate resources.

If she doesn't like the money, get a job somewhere else. They said no raise, accept it. It's what they think they can easily replace you for. Go somewhere where your talents are worth more.

So here's the thing about a Stanford Assistant to an EiC at Bon Appetit:

If you are EiC and don't support giving your assistant a raise, they probably aren't a very good assistant AND you should be actively looking to replace them.

If so, you should have a history of expressing that via performance appraisal/review, written and verbal feedback, etc.

....

On a completely seperate note, any low-level person in an assistant job who keeps a record of doing such things as "Getting a sons passport, cleaning golf clubs, and helping a wife learn google calendar" - who does those things in an ASSISTANT role and then complains about being treated "like the help" doesnt understand what an assistant is.

An assistant assists in low-level tasks and responsibilities, including in many roles in taking care of minor personal responsibilities, so that the person they are assisting focuses their time and efforts on the business' executive responsibilities.

...

Tl;dr: I both see a problem with what the EiC did and the assistant's framing of the issue.

It sounds like $35,000 is an appropriate salary for her position. Outside the star writers, publishing is notoriously low-paying. This isn't about race. It's about a jerk who was the boss. There are hundreds of millions of bosses of businesses around the world. Most of them are morons, cretins. For this Stanford grad to be 'cleaning his golf clubs' is a sign that she might be learned in some things, but needs a shot of confidence. Is she had the oomph to get into Stanford, her standards, both for herself and her job, need to be higher than trailing around the head of Bon Appetit.

Interestingly, I canceled my subscription to BA about 8 months ago. I'd been getting it for about 15-20 years or so. But I don't cook much anymore. And if I do, it's for my wife and I and she is on a very specific diet that does not work with any BA recipes. So I was not using it anyway. But then I noticed it had gotten very Social Justice Warrior-like and working too hard to appear woke. I was thinking- this is food. It's about cultures and eating and sharing. They're busy virtue signaling. So I canceled them. Not because the boss was a cretin, which he apparently is, but because they all were moving off topic to become just another rant in my face. I am canceling all rants in my face.
