Whatever this is... oh, he just reversed the job-loss number and the death number... that's not such a big deal... is it?

ADDED: The coherence of a transcript depends a lot on punctuation, and you can help or hurt the person you're transcribing. I've seen this done to Trump (and blogged about it). With this Biden transcription, it could be done like this: "We're in the middle of a pandemic that has cost us more than 85,000 jobs as of today — lives.  Of millions of people — millions of people — millions of jobs."

I know, that's still bad, but you can heighten the sense that he knew he had it flipped and he was in the process of straightening it out, before us, in real time. And yet, that does seem consistent with a journey into dementia. You can be patient and sympathetic toward a person in that condition as they struggle to organize their thinking as they are speaking aloud to you, but THERE IS NO WAY that is acceptable in a President of the United States.

Biden is either a) the sacrificial lamb cause the DNC knows they are toast this year OR b) a place-holder for their late to the party savior. Could be he is both, (b) if the DNC thinks they can get away with it and (a) if they can't.

MikeR said...

Sounded like he initially said, "Billions" of people, and then corrected it, and then corrected it to jobs. And he sounds like he hadn't figured out the "unemployment insurance" thing until later. Pretty confused, especially reading off a teleprompter.

tim maguire said...

And he partially corrects himself in the end--millions of people, millions of jobs.

I don't see it as any big deal either, but there's still (and always) the hypocrisy angle. 20 years ago, it would have been Joe being Joe. Today it's not even that. They'll just ignore it. If this were said by a Republican (Sarah Palin? Trump?), it would be front page news and highlighted on every late-night talk show.

daskol said...

Well, it puts the lie to that hilarious advice from the other day: Biden doesn't even do well when he's reading. He clearly loses his place, and while he eventually regains his place in the text, the emotion/emphasis/content remain out of sync like a bad sound sync. He can't really even deliver prepared remarks convincingly, so if you're already on the lookout for signs of deterioration, and been paying attention, it does look as though he's getting worse as the campaign drags on. He wasn't this bad a couple of months ago. Stress and anxiety are not only very common in progressive dementia cases, they can exacerbate the symptoms.

daskol said...

It's clear that he has no connection to the content he is delivering. There's an uncanny valley thing going on with him. It's taking the Creepy Joe nickname and giving it a whole new connotation.

I saw similar problems with my dad who I cared for the last 3 years of his life. Dementia is a terrible disease and it's progression is brutal to watch. It's easy to diagnose. The brain shrinks and that is very visible in an MRI or CAT-scan. Also there's this fun little memory test they do. It's used do to see if seniors can quality for assisted living or must go into lock down in memory care. It's surprisingly difficult and I had trouble passing it.

Biden is clearly in mental decline. That's not political snark. How can the Dems be serious about this? Biden's wife? She doesn't love him enough to protect him from the humiliation? And the media just keeps smiling like this is all normal.

Then we have massive evidence that Obama was spying on a political campaign. Crickets.

All this happening with govts at all levels arresting, fining, shaming citizens that only want to feed themselves and their families.

daskol said...

Like Lewis above I've watched this close up before, and "ah" "uhm" is not necessarily to be expected. The dissociation and lack of appropriate emotional response is what happens after dementia has progressed, and the substitution of generic words (thing is used a lot in conversation) as well as over-emoting especially "flat" but inappropriate emotional expression is common. Biden can't emote properly.

tim maguire said...

Jersey Fled said...Dan Quayle couldn't spell "potato".

That was a fake scandal. He held in his hand a card given him by the school that had "potato" spelled "potatoe," which is an accepted variant.

stevew said...

"Not a big deal if this type of mistake had only happened once or twice, but there is something similar almost every time he speaks."

Agreed. I would also give him a pass on this sort of thing if it happened during an interaction where he was speaking contemporaneously. But FFS he's reading and presumably read it once or twice, at least, in preparation for this performance.

I expect that the Democrat Party leadership, and their big donors, are seeing this and then rubbing their eyes and covering their face with their hands. Lots of sighing.

exhelodrvr1 said...

No - there has been a significant increase recently in the frequency of his gaffes

daskol said...

Although he did sigh at the correct moment in that Stephanopoulos interview, right before he dived into a lie that would be revealed as such within 12 hours. It's like he saw the future.

Temujin said...

The Dems know this. And behind the scenes there is already a whoop-ass battle going on as to who they'll replace Biden with, and when to do it. This is the ongoing battle. This bullshit about his binder of women that he's considering for the Veep slot is just letting him play out what they need played out. But behind this, it's all being brain stormed, polled, configured, and baked.

This is like an inner party coup. They've got time to lay it out on us. When they finally announce it's Cuomo, the people (media) will rejoice. And if they're smart, they'll do it with only 2 months to go before the election. The press can cover him up for 2 months.

Even without the accidental switching of the numbers, he still sounds like he's struggling to voice a coherent thought. I've been thinking this for awhile now. It's not just his gaffes. It's the whole presentation. It's the way he often cuts himself off when he clearly can't recall what he was just saying. I've never liked him, but I can remember when he was a normal bloviating politician. He at least could construct a paragraph. This is something different. It's also getting worse, and I don't think he'll make it to November.

TreeJoe said...

You used to be able to blame this stuff on the rigors of campaigning.

Bay Area Guy said...

As a stand-alone interview, it's simply a very minor gaffe.

However, it fits neatly In the context of a 50-year Washington DC swamp-dweller, who:

a. Sniffs women's hair
b. Grabbed a staffer by the pussy
c. Swam nude in his pool - as VP - pissing off female secret service agents.
d. Has 20 video clips of being handsy and gropey with female kids
e. Tells goofy stories about CornPop and black Delaware kids rubbing his hairy legs
f. forgets what state he's in
g. has a grifter son who got kicked out of the Navy for being a cokehead
h. has a grifter son who knocked up an Arkansas stripper
i. has a grifter son who is a part-time Ukrainian energy expert and part-time Chinese investment banker, bilking foreign companies for millions of dollars
j. has a "No Malarkey" sign on his tour bus; and
k. regularly bumbles, mumbles, and stumbles thru softball interviews by his media allies

So, Yes, we all know how bad the Dems/Media scribes/#NeverTrumpers want to beat Trump. But propping up this 77-year old, clearly demented figurehead as their standard-bearer, just shows you how lost these clowns truly are.

Not to worry. The dems are juicing the numbers on the virus that came from ARM's Beloved and Heroic People's Republic Of China ChiCom's lab.

A CO coroner is currently fighting against the state because a dude who drank himself to death is being listed as a General Tso Sicken victim:

"When police in Cortez, Colorado were called to Cortez City Park early on the morning of May 4, they found Sebastian Yellow, 35, lying on the ground and called it out as a code “Frank,” meaning Yellow had died, according to a police report obtained by CBS4.

Within a week, local Montezuma County Coroner George Deavers determined Yellow had died of acute alcohol poisoning, his blood alcohol measured at .55, nearly twice the lethal limit.

“It was almost double what the minimum lethal amount was in the state”, said Deavers, during an interview with CBS4.

But Deavers said that before he even signed the death certificate, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment had already categorized Yellow’s death as being due to COVID-19 and it was tabulated that way on the state’s website.

“I can see no reason for this”, said Deavers."

3. The nepotistic corruption of his family making millions of dollar off his official position of Vice President during his terms with Obama, as well as the questions of what influence foreign countries like China gained from the investment of those corrupt millions?
4. His apparent involvement with the ObamaBidenGate scandal involving the FBI, CIA and other agencies spying on Gen. Flynn and railroading him, in an attempt to bring down the Trump administration, despite knowing that everything they were charging him with was false?

Seems like the Democrats could hardly have picked a less "electable" presidential candidate. The others were all unpalatable in their own ways, but Biden seems to have become a multi-tasking failure par excellence.
