Either Venezuela is lying or they really do have a couple of our special ops guys. Either way, this would be a great time for the President to promise to send in half a dozen kill teams to get them out, and that means killing , Maduro and all near to him.

Ex-special ops guys. Sounds like they were floating around the "private security" job market. A lot of these guys go into civilian life with a skill set that is not especially marketable and end up peddling their military credentials. Some of them are more authentic than others. Goudreau seems like a total nitwit. His firm's business plan was to embed armed security personnel undercover in schools to defend against a school shooting. The website is hilarious, especially the video montage of him in combat, on a private plane, an awkward, blurry photo op with Bush, and him running in nothing but a pair of boxer briefs and backpack. His biggest private security job before the raid on Venezuela was working security at a concert held on the Colombian-Venezuelan border in support of Guaido. He hooked up with some drug trafficking anti-Maduro dissident who had cobbled together a "resistance" of about 100 army deserters who had been setting around doing nothing since fleeing into Colombia.
It's almost unfathomable that Goudreau could have thought such a minuscule show of force would have any impact. His totally naive point-of-view actually seems earnest. I think a lot of guys like Goudreau, for their own ego integrity, they have to convince themselves that what they were doing was for a good cause and would ultimately be a betterment to humanity.

That is the American Way: compound one stupid crime with a larger, stupider (and costlier) one.
Since the Venezuelan's welcoming party was evidently well-prepared for their coming, the odds are better than even that an informer told them about this invasion.
Reminds me of the plot of the Guns of Navarone (informer in the Greek Resistance tips off the Germans that the unwatched cliffs were going to be scaled by am Allied demolition team.)
But like the Bay of Pigs affair, this ill-fated expedition was real, not make-believe.
J Farmer mentioned this story in a comment earlier today. I saw the story online this afternoon. It does appear to be a privately funded debacle, using a couple of private security ex-military types. I can't imagine anyone talking me into this scenario for any amount of money.
I worked in the tech sector for many years. I've sat through many a sales presentation by very enthusiastic professionals and left the room thinking: "these guys are delusional".

One reason there is an independent Venezuela at all (and Colombia, Peru, Chile, etc.) is because of all the British and other foreign filibusterers that put their noses into the troubles of the Spanish empire. Both Miranda and Bolivar critically depended on them. And so for most of the Spanish-American liberators.
This incident has been played out, just like this, hundreds of times. Most of these things ended in disaster. Its the occasional successful ones that are remembered.
