As long as the NYT is attacking Ronan Farrow as "too good to be true," Matt Lauer would like to say...

"Why Ronan Farrow Is Indeed Too Good to Be True" (Mediaite). Excerpt:
On October 9, 2019, I was falsely accused of rape. The allegation came from Brooke Nevils, the same woman whose complaint resulted in my termination at NBC. It was made public as part of the promotional rollout for a new book by Ronan Farrow. This accusation was one of the worst and most consequential things to ever happen in my life, it was devastating for my family, and outrageously it was used to sell books. At no time did Brooke Nevils ever use the words “assault” or “rape” in regards to any accusation against me while filing her complaint with NBC in November of 2017.....

I am not suggesting that everything Ronan has written in his book is untrue or based on misinformation, but it is clear that over the course of nearly two years he became a magnet and a willing ear for anyone with negative stories about the network and people who worked for it. Consequently, he cultivated many sources who were also disgruntled or who had been fired by NBC, and therefore had an incentive to come up with explanations for why their careers there didn’t work out....
Much more at the link.

UPDATE: Farrow responds: "All I’ll say on this is that Matt Lauer is just wrong. Catch and Kill was thoroughly reported and fact-checked, including with Matt Lauer himself."

Why didn’t he sue Farrow for libel or defamation?

Matt Lauer writes:

“It’s about whether, as journalists, we have a responsibility to check facts and vet sources.”

Looking at the reporting around Donald Trump, his family, people in his administration, and Brett Kavanaugh, I assert that Lauer’s statement has not been true for at least three years.

My money would be on "Matt Lauer is a rapist" if I could find anybody who would take the other side of that bet (Mr Lauer excepted).

You mean, people like you, Matt Lauer?

Whatever may be the exact details of who did what to whom when, it seems pretty clear NBC & NBC News had (has?) some major personnel issues with sex in the workplace. That being said, I don't #BelieveAllWomen, and think that every one accused should get to explain their side, be it in the workplace or the court. A courtesy that Lauer & his ilk have routinely denied to many guys in the public sphere since at least Clarence Thomas.

I remember some nostrum about Turnabout & Fair Play...

When you say someone forces you to have anal sex, even after you said no, I don't think you have to actually say the word "rape" for people to come to that conclusion.

He talks about journalists saying that Nevils' accusation was brave "before I could even issue a statement". First, I don't know why he doesn't mention Ann Curry by name (he does talk about her later in the piece) since she was one of the first to call Nevils' claim brave. Second, he says he was falsely accused. If a story is untrue, how long does it take to issue a statement saying so?

She didn't actually use the words "rape" or "assault". OTOH she didn't say that little Matty Boy took her to heights unknown with his sexual skills in the rack. As Whoopy Goldberg will tell you there is "rape" and then there is real rapey rape. I dunno--if what he did to her was good enough to get him fired, I don't care what she calls it.

Yea, probably. So how's it feel to be on the wrong end of that for a change. This all the entire media has done for the last four years regarding the current administration. You got just a little taste, and you caved. Imagine trying to run a country at the same time.

She probably didn't want to sugar coat it like that.

Matt Lauer may be a jerk - but there was no secret lock-rape button on his door.

The lies used to smear Lauer were very Clintonian. Schmary made up BS.

Matt Lauer put Ryan Lochte in his place after he committed the crime of being extorted at gunpoint by brown people.

Is he the guy with the rape room/office? Or is that another of our self-appointed elites?

Anyway, someone here made the excellent point that Ronan must be coming out with dirt on Biden. That explains all the recent hit pieces.

Change "network" to "Trump administration" and you have described NBC's business model.

Lauer's probably been itching to write this for two years, but didn't do it until Ben Smith's story in Matt's mind gave everyone the green light to attack Ronan Farrow. His mistake judging by the blowback was not realizing a lot of people were mad at Ben Smith over his story, and just because the Times published it didn't mean the tables had completely turned, and everything Farrow had written about in the #MeToo saga was now to be disbelieved.

Matt Lauer writes: However, he [Ronan Farrow] was hardly an unbiased journalist when it came to anything to do with NBC, and he was rarely challenged as he dropped salacious stories in a daily marketing effort designed to create media attention for his book.

Substitute the appropriate proper nouns and this statement is entirely true regarding Matt Lauer's deeds regarding Trump.

"Tom said:

"Why didn’t he sue Farrow for libel or defamation?"

Because Lauer is a public figure and it's unlikely that he could show Farrow acted with malice in reporting what people said. He could sue Farrow's sources, though.

Yancey Ward said...

Assuming he really is innocent, then Lauer needs to ask himself why no one spoke up for him. Seriously, he was in a position of actual influence to speak up for the principle of innocent until proven guilty in any number of situations reported on by his own fucking employer and his own fucking colleagues. He failed, and is now paying the price, if he really is innocent. It is hard to have sympathy for him in any circumstance.

Have no fear for Matt Lauer. He can always fall back on the "I was so coked up I didn't know what the hell I was doing" defense.

Geez. Women. If someone does something to you that you object to, document it in some way. If it's criminal, go to the police if you feel you can (I acknowledge circumstances in which you can't). But in some way create a record, with at least one witness whom it would be hard to impeach.

I've been in at least one situation in which I should have done just this, and did not, and now I would not go back and try to impugn the character of the guy, because it's pure he-said/she-said as far as anyone but me is concerned. I don't regret it per se- it was youthful overwrought behavior on his part and first-time drunken helplessness on mine, and there were, thankfully, no long term ill effects. But I am certainly telling my college-bound daughter that it's up to her to keep her wits about her and, if things go awry, DOCUMENT.

It's really pretty amazing. If you go up to a guy, with a rat-trap in your hand, and say "Look, stick your dick in here, and I'll push the little button so it slams shut", no way he's going to do it. He might even look at you funny. "Why would I want to do that?"

But if he stuck his dick in the rat-trap, and it slammed shut, it would hurt like Hell at first, and it would be sore for a month or two, but then he'd pretty much be over it. No big deal. But when you stick your dick in psycho ...

Does Ben Smith (as former honcho of Buzz Feed) have credibility for this kind of critique (Ronan Farrow runs with poorly researched articles because the story attacks the "right people")?

Lauer seems to make some pretty damning points here regarding Ronan Farrow's reporting. Thorough it's clearly not, and at least some of the background claims and assertions, the secondary stuff, seem made-up out of whole cloth, if Lauer's examples are true. With Satchel and the truth, he may choose his preferences over reality. Like mother, like son?
