Scrap my comment about a pulp sci-fi novel, that's reminiscent of Lord of The Rings and the Eye of Sauron. The color is amazing, especially off the water.
Sauron is fictional: this is the Eye of Corona-Chan. Warning Wisconsin not to disrespect her powers. Badgers can only come out when she says its OK to come out! Get back in your houses, and bow to Corona-Chan the all-seeing bat deity from the East.
and then he saw, rising black, blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood, the cruel pinnacles and iron crown of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr. One moment only it stared out, but as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye
That’s a Martian Machine coming across the lake. I saw the movie in 1953. Good news ending was that a bio-weapon Coronavirus got them and the had no Hydroxychloroquine and Zinc on Mars.
From an anonymous UPS delivery driver... 5 types of customers since the “rona”:
1) Steve: He has been waiting for this moment his whole life. He has been drinking boilermakers since 10:00 am in his recliner and his AR is within arms reach. He has 6 months provisions in the basement and a bug out bag due west buried in the woods. Steve demands a handshake as I give him his package. He’s sizing me up as I deliver his ammo. Steve will survive this, and he will kill you if he needs to.
2) Brad: He is standing at his window wearing skinny jeans and a Patagonia t-shirt. He is mad because there were no organic tomatoes at Whole Foods today. He points at the ground where he has taped a 6 ft no go zone line from his porch. I leave his case of Fuji water, organic granola bites, and his new “Bernie Bro” hat at the tape. Brad will not survive. Steve will probably eat him.
3) Nancy: She has sprayed everything with Thieves oil. Bought all the Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, meat, and bread from the local grocery chain. She has quarantined her kids and sprays them with a mixture of thieves, lavender, & mint essential oils daily. She has posted every link known to man about “The Rona” on her social media. She will spray you if you break the 6 ft rule. I will leave her yet another case of toilet paper. She will last longer than Brad, but not Steve.
4) Karen: She has called everybody and read them the latest news on “The Rona”. She asked for the manager at Food Lion, Walmart, Publix, McDonalds, Chi-Fil-A, and Vons all before noon demanding more toilet paper. Karen’s kids are currently faking “The Rona” to avoid her. I’m delivering “Hello kitchen” to her. Karen will not survive longer than Brad.
5) Mary: Is sitting in the swing watching her kids have a water balloon fight in the front yard as she is on her fourth glass of wine. She went to the store and bought 2 cases of pop tarts, 6 boxes of cereal, 8 bags of pizza rolls, And a 6 roll pack of toilet paper. There is a playlist of Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and Post Malone playing in the background. I’m bringing her second shipment of 15 bottles of wine in 3 days. Mary will survive and marry Steve. Together they will repopulate the earth.
It is interesting that these things keep popping up and are treated like separate individual events.
But it is the same people and all the events serve the same goals."
Preceded by Silent Spring hoax, nuclear winter hoax, AIDS hoax, Ferguson/Trayvon hoax.
Same goals, yes, but slightly different methods. The ones involving the false appeal to science may be the worst--the Althouses of America can see through the BLM/racism hoax and Russian collusion hoax, but when "science" is involved, they are tempted to show their enlightenment by "following the experts."
Been watching the COVID-19 testing numbers with interest. When Trump announced his reopening guidelines, I thought to myself that some states/cities might really ramp of testing for a while, not to meet the guidelines (they can't actually bet met with regards to testing), but, instead, to run up new case numbers to justify remaining closed until the end of May. I also thought that the tell would be a sudden drop after a week because they had started to blow through what testing resources they actually had on hand. Sure enough, you can see the pattern I anticipated in the daily testing graph from Bill McBride. The country managed to average about 210,000 tests a day for 5 days running- an improvement over the previous 150,000/day that had persisted for over 2 weeks. However, the limit was reached- we dropped to 135,000 today.
“Creepy” and no one mentions the new alleged confirmation of Tara Reade's story? Hard to see the media being able to duck this. But I do expect a lot of attacks within hours.
"Bay Area counties have extended their “shelter-in-place” orders till end of May. We just started Week 7 today, so we’re tacking on another 4 weeks."
Yeah, Governor pretty-boy Fuckhead wants to keep his boot on the neck of the economy. I feel bad for the blue collar workers, and service employees. Many of them voted for his sorry ass and continue to support him.
40 Million people in Cal - 1,700 Covid-19 deaths over 3-4 months. What a joke.
@Yancey: total tests dropped again today in MA. In part because of your posts here I've been watching the "Percent of Tests* that are Positive by Date" much more closely and in combination with the total number of tests. Total tests peaked at 14,614 on April 23; today that number is 8,787. Percentage of positives from April 23 to now are: 21, 26, 20, 17, 17. Daily deaths ramped up on the 13th, held steady until two days ago; significant decline over the last two days.
Gov Charlie Baker has yet to announce if the May 4 slow re-open date is still planned. Mayor Marty Walsh, Boston, says there will be no re-opening of the city May 4. Looks like counties other than Suffolk could safely slow open.
Nativity “Notre crime est del’homme” Lamartine. ‘L’homme.’
Everything stained: The tea stains the cup, The cup stains the counter, the foot stains the snow, The moon stains the air. Everything said. I am told this is not an original thought. Below, what was forgotten and cold, As if it were not merely, actually true, There was a birth, the unthinking was done And this messy mix of snow and blood Produced a word that meant ‘goodbye’ or ‘hello’, Unsorting a chaos into ‘this one and that’ And saying “Insofar as I am here, that is there.”
Or if they are ‘mad’, we are ‘mad’, since Neither they nor we can prove the obvious: That Johnson kicked a stone but Berkeley Was already dead, that the delusion suffices To make a few words bring a cup of tea And that, without God, preserving the hollow Takes so long to say, everyman Could seek to find Putrefaction of his mother, Of his brother, of his kind.
L: A broken nose more expresses health Than your ridiculous screams and cries. I keep, at least, some human cowardice At home. Making tea in the grubby room but acknowledging this Angel. he will not, For the moment, destroy me . That you wished To deliver yourself to man was what disappointed.
M: There was no sense, speaking in the wrong language, In any action. Neither theirs nor mine. If I felt or smelt destruction don’t think of it As intended. I have told people as, perhaps, A piece of vanity, that I saw things. Nothing was so crude. Only those who wished to love me. They could not. Hate becomes, sometime, stronger than love.
L: And yet, for me, nothing was more ‘subtle’ than mine. To you it was merely looks, a means of accommodating Body to body and the dysfunction I must finally feel When doubt had to sleep with both of us. I ached And I ache everyday for what, well, I never wanted. For I tried for merely a word that would say You know me.
M: I know you but You were not enough. Or never could be. Listen, Lewis, I joy in those few months When we really were discovering what it was that always is so strange about each other: Our mortality, our distant death, our always otherness. Don’t you see – I have gone there, I have lost you, I have lost myself. And your child Is the only human word I can now discover. I hate you. You were not an Angel. I hate myself For saying this. How could I demand this impossible?
L: No, you could not. And yet you, O beautiful you, had a right to. You had a claim on an Angel. But he did not come. Only me. I love you.
M: But you, my fool, my once-was-guest, remember: Love cannot be there merely to please you. We women are accused of eating hearts – it is not us but God that burns your soul, it is not I, it is never I, but these fragments, These joys and sorrows, this ecstasy you refuse To forget. Don’t forget. I may be mad But I do not miss the compliment. For in a glass I joy greatly at what memory can produce. The happiness of a boy who cried “I love you!” Because he had never loved before nor has since.
Restrictions in most of the country will largely end in three weeks. Either state governors will relax them or people will ignore them en masse. But they're ending.
A bit obtuse. There has deffinatelly been a disturbance in Prof. Althouse's blog. Confusion from my end. I'm still upset Dylan got blamed. Bob should of came with a warning. New York got blamed. Inga, not too much though. Someone must of finally asked Inga on a date. I need someone to blame. Yawn.
Thank you, Anne - I thought someone had hacked into me - one gets very paranoid in these dark days! - so I immediately jumped to linux and changed all my passwords - a good thing to do! - but it was stupidly unnecessary! But leaving 'Windows' open for too long is not a good idea, you think?!
Just looking at the epicenter of the epidemic in the Bay Area, since I have their stats ready at hand:
There are 172 people currently hospitalized for COVID-19 in Santa Clara County. They are using less than 5% of all acute beds, 18% of ICU beds, 0 surge beds, and 0 ventilators. And that includes people who are only *suspected* to have COVID-19. Meanwhile, 58% of acute beds, 44% of ICU beds, and 99% of surge beds are empty, and 86% of the county’s ventilators aren’t in use. There have been 103 deaths in the county, of which 77% were over age 60 (65+ are ~14% of the population, 60+ are ~32% of all confirmed cases), and at least 86% had one or more underlying health problems.
The point of “shelter-in-place” was to “flatten the curve” to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed. Well, the curve has flattened, and the hospitals haven’t been overwhelmed. Daily new confirmed cases have been half of the April 10th peak or less every day for more than 2 weeks. None of this appears to justify another month-long extension shutting down all non-essential business and confining healthy people under 60 with non-essential jobs largely to their homes. What additional benefit are we expecting to gain here?
Ken B: "Drudge has managed to not cover the new Biden information."
Drudge went left about 18 months ago.
Matt Drudge refuses to discuss who he sold his interest to.
I suspect after the next election, when it no longer matters, we will find out there was a lefty billionaire behind the purchase and switch over to lefty narratives at Drudge. Similar to how Pierre Omidyar and Soros became major funders of the former Weekly Standard FakeCon lefties who formed The Bulwark.
We are also seeing substantial steps taken at Fox News by Paul Ryan the Murdoch sons to more forcefully push typically left-stream "news".
I wouldn't be surprised if after the next election more aggressive steps are taken at Fox to move Tucker, Hannity and Ingraham out.
California -- on purely medical & scientific grounds - could safely reopen today. Folks would have to wear masks, gloves and take extra precautions, and minor social distancing, but work and business could resume.
The Dems won't let it happen. The Reps are too weak to press the issue. The media are clueless leftists. And the doctors are cowards., because they let these infectious disease quacks run the show. (Except Doc K - may need to drag him back into practice!)
Really interesting scene you captured there, Professor! Something blowed up! Greg Hlatky: Restrictions in most of the country will largely end in three weeks. That is my suspicion as well. I made a trip to the grocery store today. Not so many people sporting masks as last week. A noticeable difference. Also a sign on the entry door that said "250 people at a time", no one was counting (today, or any other day that I've been there). It's not one of the real affluent areas, so I guess safeguards are less critical. I hope that people are coming to the realization that we've been had: 6 deaths in my county. Not that there is no danger, but we need to deal with the risk while we get back to work.
O, Hannah, there is always this: Between the past and the future There is this: dead? No, but Wanting this ‘past’, always hoping (‘Killed by hope’) for merely a summer: A field, a forest, the wilder, wilder flowers.
A big fish eat me but there are no fish in the sea. And God will tell you who is right and who is wrong. A big fish eat me but there are no fish in the sea And the world will tell you who is right and who is wrong. Jonah died, was born again, lived back to tell Who was right and who was wrong. And the world, did it end, did it begin? A big fish eat me but there are no fish in the sea.
The sadness in a joke Is the surprise it cannot give: You look, then, in that face With a question that is wrong Asking “Are you real?” The reply always “Yes!” meaning “No.”
ST My prediction is a Fall reprise of C19 with attendant scary news from “science” which will be largely ignored with half hearted stay in place “recommendations” which will also be ignored. I don’t think they will bother with models next time.
I think we will revert to the 14th century approach: quarantine the sick. Speaking of novel.
I don't know if creepy is the word I would use for this photo. I looked at it for a long time. Sinister? Yes, sinister. And harsh.
The Eye of Big Brother.
Another 30 days in the hole. Thanks, Governor Nuisance.
So the nurses at my hospitals will get a 20% pay cut--and all of the other staff as well. And some hospitals are not doing stem cell transplants. None of them are doing CAR-T procedures. So people will die because of this. This is madness.
The point of “shelter-in-place” was to “flatten the curve” to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed. Well, the curve has flattened, and the hospitals haven’t been overwhelmed.
to take a lesson from Vietnam, we NEED to Declare Victory, and Go Back To Work!
So it looks like Tara Reade's accusation may take Biden down before the convention. I think this has been her purpose all along. She had no intention of coming forward until it began to look like Biden couldn't win. Now, it all has to come out quickly, before the convention, so that the Dems can slot someone else into position.
"So the nurses at my hospitals will get a 20% pay cut--and all of the other staff as well. And some hospitals are not doing stem cell transplants. None of them are doing CAR-T procedures. So people will die because of this. This is madness."
I suspect that when all is said and done, many more people will end up dying from the lockdown's impact on the medical system than were saved from Covid.
So, Cali has found some bodies of people who died in early February who have now tested positive for covid. Dig up some from December, I'll bet they will test positive too.
'Another forty days vigil in the barrel of my bed' quoting myself.
The Age Of Darkness.
The chatter on the wind is the irritation Of the street: drunks or illiterate poor Claiming back bitter heritage of dark Or barbaric recompense of pillage. The habited Romans on their destined sword Of solitary circlings; burnt books, Artefacts in whose flames is seen the death Of some peculiar, personal march To some incongruous goal. Not sacrificed But burnt with the words and flaming tongue Taking all in a lying confession Of confounded biographies. The time heralded on an ox skin drum And thus brought to a passive, anonymous march, A prayer of strangers.
Creepy? No, very cool. And it immediately reminded me of a mid-to-late ‘70’s sci-fi paperback cover.
I hope the nicotine as Covid prophylactic thing is true. I stopped dipping a few years ago but I’m still a stone nicotine freak and have Steve-levels of nicotine lozenges and Zyns in the house. Because an addict must never run out. Come over with a fiddy. I’ll hook you up.
Plus how great would it be if the answer to a public health crisis was...another public health crisis.
The street is a thought Redeemed by its being empty. And though I expect you It is only now as sleep Its knowledge of forgetfulness: Soft on the pavement, a bruise Before the blows of emptied halls, Uncertain cries, the poverty of clubs – I expect you like you your drugs A pleasure more in keeping With wished for happiness than The reality of a wide awake buzz. Or, you a child, one of the many, Lost in a Minoan fold, A labyrinthine fantasy, A Minotaur expecting Your Perseus, your Ariadne?
There is a darkness in the street Like a pall, a shadowed fissure Entered as the mythology Of our own fear, intimate But civic, private, also public, The town criers, the officials, The citizenry, covenant arteries, A lonely Hell. There your son, My mother, wife or child So difficult to hear or left unheard All that was not, will not, cannot be said. Folded as comfort and disillusion An hour dawn will unroll.
Odd numbers on a scrap of paper Found in my library Blake, seeming so familiar: Did whoever wrote that read this or underline And spoil, gather like a hoarder scattered words That confirmed his or her own boredom, Were these accessed digits loves, vague catches Of possible friends, the desperate last Samaritan to a falling despair Or the casual overflow of the overly social: What did Blake say except how we are born Bludgeoned by our imaginings, sweating An infernal magic, ignored and burdened With needed, wrong acquaintance: dictums Of law and friendship, a private room, The fantastic visions of candlelight, Silence of before the telephone?
Is he or she a friend, this Blake ‘scholar’, This desecrator, this egotist, This humanity? Probably not.
Gold and silver Honey of your hair O why should I care? Long since your departing Beauty stayed O why should I care? Could I waylay fate, Take once more (O heart) The listening part, Catch in the air Songs that fade And a voice, a face, a form That now, long since warm, Holds me distant and in scorn? O face, O beauties dawn, O honey of hair But one more dance, One more glance Or why should I care?
"The move by Abbot puts Texas – the country’s second-largest economy behind California – at the forefront of the movement to reopen state economies that have been basically brought to a standstill as the U.S. grapples with the outbreak of COVID-19."
Why or why did my NY hippie parents move us to San Francisco in 1969, as opposed to Texas? Do over!
CER: You have to smoke Gauloises to get the covid-19 cure. I think it's also required to take a French hit so the healing smoke penetrates into the deepest recesses of your lungs. I believe this was the disinfectant that Donald was talking about.
We need to federalize all state and local debt, making it a federal obligation backed by the taxing power of the federal government. The pooled state obligations will be paid by a new tax on the states levied in proportion to the amount of debt federalized by each state. With the tax in place, states should then be forced to adopt balanced budget schemes.
We can't ignore the "financial abyss" that state governments are facing right now.
Many WI small biz are to reopen Wednesday by decree of our esteemed leader. Most excellent that our beloved Pet Spa will be receiving its furry customers including our dear Standard poodle whose nails are too long.
The owner has built that business from nothing over 20 years and we can’t wait to support her and her large crew.
Thank God some common sense appears to be making a comeback.
BAG, Kiyo: ""Bay Area counties have extended their “shelter-in-place” orders till end of May. We just started Week 7 today, so we’re tacking on another 4 weeks." The Dem Party is an evil enterprise."
Indeed. They don't even bother hiding it anymore.
That's not goal posts they're moving, that's entire stadiums.
They weaponized alarmism and won't let the crisis go to waste.
”And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought, my God... the genius of that! The genius! The will to do that! Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. ”

We already know this is happening.
These are the "assumed" and "presumed" cases of people who died in their homes because they were too afraid to go to the hospital.
COVID-19 is being put on their death certificates anyway.

Are you making a joke?
That is a great parody of leftist thought either way.
Couldn't get a real person at Comcast today to talk to me about the fraudulent cancellation of my service yesterday. I wish there were decent alternatives so that we could punish companies who fail to take care of their customers.
Going tomorrow morning to get the cancer dug out of my arm. I hope (and think) that it is localized to just a small area on my bicep. But as I noted when I first noticed the lesion, how many people will ignore and deny, afraid to get care or unable to figure out to get something taken care of?
"A couple of things they underline which the MSM seems to ignore: hospitals are suffering financially while needed procedures are not being performed; patients who should be seeing doctors or receiving treatment are afraid to go to the hospital; emergency rooms are seeing escalating problems of domestic violence. "
Indeed. And it is crazy-making that the idjits making decisions to remain shutdown cannot seem to grasp the scope of the destruction they are visiting on the system.
"In Madison, UW and St. Marys Hospitals are cutting pay, cutting hours, and furloughing workers." I hope one of them was one of the docs writing fraudulent scripts to Act 10 protesters.
Magnum is put under quarantine for exposure to African hemorrhagic fever. Despite the big sign on the door, Higgins comes barging into the guest house where Magnum lives to yell at Magnum.
Anne-I-Am: bad news about the lesion, but I'm glad that you're getting it addressed. Our governor has graciously conceded that non-critical medical procedures can start...in May.
And of course, he decides what is critical and what is not?
I wonder how long it will take for some physicians to decide they are going to provide care no matter what. That to continue to adhere to these insane guidelines is a violation of their oath.

320, I picture our betters in committee thinking that invoking "Badger" and "ATVs" are sufficient opium for the masses. I suspect they are getting some Packers aligned to the program.
Hope and Truth are sort of like the best friends we had when we were kids, Charity is like the woman we met when we were older, when we were flush with cash and full of testosterone and courage, who we wanted to marry.
For women reading this, please substitute "full of a desire for that which is best in the world" for "when we were flush with case and full of testosterone and courage".
Narciso ----- is it not true that Orwell, like John Lennon, liked to pretend he was a lower-class guy, and overindulged in cigarettes and cheap chocolate candy?
HAD HE BEEN MY FRIEND I WOULD HAVE WEANED HIM FROM HIS WEAKNESS FOR CIGARETTES ... would have shown him how to smoke a cigar like a man, and of course the cheap chocolate candy would have been a thing of the past.
Do the Democrats want to lose the 2020 election? It might make more sense for them to lose, given their point of view. I think that for most American will look at our current condition as the result of a once in a century global natural disaster. So a blame Trump strategy isn't likely to succeed. From a Democratic Party POV, Trump and the Republican are more likely to fail over the next few years. 2024 might look like a repeat of the 1932 scenario where FDR and the Democrats swept into power after the first 2 years of the Great Depression.
Oh yeah -- there was a big drop in the number of deaths (and cases) yesterday. But that has been the case for many Sundays. The thing is that usually we would then get a substantial spike on Monday as cases that were unreported on Sunday were reported on Monday. But there has been no spike today.
His wife (Orwell's - her name was Sonia) was beautiful, don't feel sorry for his lack of social skills, a good wife or a good husband makes up for lots of social inadequacies. That has been the truth for a long long time.
That being said, a good marriage, as good as it is, is nothing compared to knowing that you have been the person God needed you to be at the moment God needed you to be that person.
The world is small, Heaven is rather large in comparison.
emergency rooms are seeing escalating problems of domestic violence
Several of y'all owe me an apology. I expressed concern about this very early on and some people who think they hold a monopoly on virtue -- or think that the only possible victims of this whole sorry affair are those in ICU beds with covid -- said I was being a drama queen. Just sayin'.
I still marvel at my seeming ability to completely shut comment threads down. I can't count how many times my comment is the last one. Am I missing something here?
Or are my thoughts so astute as to make any further discussion moot?
"It is precisely what I have witnessed that now tells me that it’s time to ease the lockdown. Here’s why.
First, the wave has crested. At 1 p.m. on April 7, the COVID-19 arrivals slowed down. It was a discrete, noticeable event. Stretchers became available by 5 p.m., and the number of arriving COVID-19 patients dropped below the number discharged, transferred or deceased.
This was striking, because the community I serve is poor. Some are homeless. Most work in “essential,” low-paying jobs, where distancing isn’t easy. Nevertheless, the wave passed over us, peaked and subsided. The way this transpired tells me the ebb and flow had more to do with the natural course of the outbreak than it did with the lockdown.
Second, I worry about non-coronavirus care. While the inpatient units remain busy with sick COVID-19 patients, our ER has been quiet for more than a week. We usually average 240 patients a day. For the last week, we averaged fewer than 100. That means our patients in this diverse, low-income community are afraid to come to the ER for non-COVID care."
Heyboom, get out of bed Take a long thread and make it longer Remember to comment after the start Then you can end it, all the better Na na na na-na-na-naa
By the time I was sixteen I'd read the bible, all of Dickens and all of Marx - you read the bible, no one reads the bible - so I was told - the next year I devoured TSE, Pound, Blake, Byron and Shelley - Shelley, mostly - I couldn't work out how he made those miraculous rhymes! - then I began to write - at 17 - I didn't intend it, it just happened, as I used to explain, like Athena jumping out of my head, I being Zeus! Ha ha! I always felt this need to educate myself - Nietzsche, Gibbon, Tacitus, Suetonius, De rerum natura, anything - history, mostly, and Philosophy - the ecstasy I felt reading the symposium can never be recreated. Why am I saying this? Well, if my son reads it, maybe he'll respect me.
I sat in my room for ten years, writing, writing, writing - the comic image is me in an armchair and two mountains of white crumpled paper next to me - a flat piece of board across my knee and the radio blaring LBC!
The only time I didn't write was when I was playing chess on an old stupid computer called 'Kasparov' - it took so long to reply I had to get myself a drink - so I'd rush through Finsbury Park to an offie to get 'Martini bianca' and, once, I was stopped by the police - I told them honestly what I was doing and they told me I'm under age! So I slunked back. But I sneaked out, later, anyway!
Of course, all this time, I was on my hands and knees, listening to Rachel's latest palliates escapade, absolutely desperately in love with her - all my poetry was a plea for her to love me back - writing, writing, writing a petition to her heart - it produced poetry but nothing else - possibly, a lucky escape?
I don't mean to disrespect her - Rachel - I think she was and is a beautiful, intelligent woman but that our relationship was perverse and dishonest from the beginning - I wanted her in the most lustful, erotic sense and thought that by playing 'counsellor' I'd gain her - she thought, well I know not what? I still love her with an aching that continues to invade my dreams - very vivid anxiety dreams of her telling me to "Piss Off"!
Later, I met a woman, who really made me a man - I grew up! Taller than you can imagine. Then my mum died - I didn't feel grief, I felt anger, which I suppressed, as all good British men do - such anger - she once told me why she 'hated me' - when I was 11 - in one of those rare lucid interludes of her drinking - because "I reminded her of herself" - what a champion of intellect she must have been to tell me what I already knew! From the day I was born she beat me 'cause I reminded her of herself! It was only when I got big enough to say 'Stop it' she stopped. She wasn't an idiot - one of the smartest girls I ever knew - but a terrible mum.
I remember once, I gave her Kaufman translation of 'The Gay Science' - she loved Nietzsche and Dosteyovsky - as a child she was a voracious reader - she would always quote jane ayer - then reader, I married - her mind was filled with a desire to complete some romance - hence five marriages and six kids - all boys - anyway we had some row and the next I know she's tearing the pages out and burning them - I sweat even thinking about it - this was a woman who could have been Anne Franks sister - she called herself Anna because of Anne Frank! But she'd rather kill everything than allow me to live!
I volunteered to look after her stupid house - a democratic vote amongst us six - those ascending and descending stairs - a big, Georgian town house, which she got by conning some poor bloke to give the deeds - we grew up in that pile - so, there I was, looking after her stuff. It was dangerous, psychologically, but I thought it would be as dangerous for everyone else - and, if not me. Wow, was that tough - after a year I couldn't hack it. But then my brother somehow gets and the family phone me up and I have to go back there, chuck him out - a 6 ft druggy - I, only 57, at best - and clean up the place. He'd sold half my mothers furniture! What a moron, this Byron of my family!
Then three years more purgatory - but 'we' decide to sell it - a 'democratic' vote - all my bro's lusting after the cash - which took another year and a half till we had to auction it - and got a pittance. My mad brother - last I saw him he was wearing my mothers clothes and a wig! When I chucked him out - humiliated him - there was a long stream of bin bags winding up the street, all with my mothers clothes. But you think I was treated bad - you should hear him.

So, once my old da came a cropper, my ma, who'd been a real head-turner--that's not just a son's pride, believe me, she was a tall brunette tomato in her day--turns out that was at the root of a lot of her troubles--had enough insurance and sense to pay off the house (3/2 1600sf traditional brick, perfect for that WWII vet, wife, and 3.2 kids) so her four boys would have a roof over their heads, at least. Good call.
That was 1962. She died in 2018, after taking on let's see . . . some stuff from her mother and sisters as they died; stuff from my father's mother (we all got stuff); stuff she or a brother bought at estate sales; stuff my youngest brother has picked up, sometimes from the curb, and brought home because it just needs cleaning.
Stuff packs the attic, the storage room is packed with stuff, the nice outbuilding my youngest brother built about 2000 is stuffed with stuff. The climate-controlled rental storage (if I'm so smart why didn't I see opportunity in the stuff-storing sector of the American economy when I was in real estate in the early 80s?) is full of stuff.
We're paying more to store stuff than I used to pay for a nice two bedroom apartment.
What was the point? I thought . But Martina had already called and, so I thought, you're tough - Lewis, tougher than salt - get out there! So I produce, allegedly, you can never believe Martina, a son?
But anger was all I felt - iron in my blood - and Martina said that, as soon as she saw me - violence - of course, it came from her but it was in me.
Can I tell how I met my love? Stumbling around, of course, holding the 'Red Book' of Ezra Pounds cantos - I'd been to the so called 'Modern Library', London, of course , I wended back home by meandering the streets, drinking, drinking, just drinking - when I got to Trafalgar Square I was completely blottoed - a British expression - think ink - and I sat there, self satisfied, drunk and 'important', and this girl comes begging for change - as usual I say, I have none - but she seems to squirm around my feet - I say 'what the fuck are you doing' she says 'what you got in your hands' I say 'poetry' She says 'read' - for the next four hours - she kept saying more - so I fell in love with her!
What you wan't is your ear to be hateful - then it will return to you - more welcome than glad, winter is better, those hurtful months when Bach was the only thing that rescue you.
Everyone is better than me - everything I want just a tidal wave from me - everything tantalising like tantalus - every moment shifted as if I don't live - stupid, stupid, stupid
I know - I was thinking about it - you can't publish youtube crap - on principal! -- you're a good person, smarter than expected - I have a low expectation of women, from very bad experience
'Slunk' - I invented it, but what word! You know Shakespeare's thousands of words and I'm competing? Of course 'words' only mean ''words' until they become, well, words!
And, yet, I'm affectioned towards you - why? Somehow, you seem to recall something good in me - I think that impossible- but, when, back when, I started reading your blog, there was something in me that steared awake - I know that sounds disgusting, I'm sorry - like a sorrow I could never cope, before. Something good, something solid. I hope doesn't to drunk or infatuated - I know your married and 75 - but, still, let me roam, let me die.
Whatever was in my soul she responded to it - was she 'adapting' to a 'client' - I wasn't a 'client', never could be - but she was use to a cirtian 'condition of reality', though, only, lateley - for, it turned out she was a Phd student and had flunked (another invention of mine!) her last year - stupid cow. How difficult to climb, to remember!
The idea that 'mothers' 'care' for their children - what crock! They'd rather kill them - parasites, distorters of my body - I was beautiful before you came along! Women hate children - like we hate thunder - it happens, but lets not allow it to happen, to many times!

Scrap my comment about a pulp sci-fi novel, that's reminiscent of Lord of The Rings and the Eye of Sauron. The color is amazing, especially off the water.
The Eye of Sauron.
On the way to Mordor?
Wow, Steve had the exact same thought.
Brought to my mind this.

Sauron is fictional: this is the Eye of Corona-Chan. Warning Wisconsin not to disrespect her powers. Badgers can only come out when she says its OK to come out! Get back in your houses, and bow to Corona-Chan the all-seeing bat deity from the East.

May God have mercy on us all.

Whoa.

I have not said Althouse cannot see thru this series of obviously related panics.
She might just not be satisfied yet with the evidence of that relationship to say anything.
She’s cautious and scholarly, and I appreciate that. I’m a firebrand, a different type of person. We have different roles to play.

Bay Area counties have extended their “shelter-in-place” orders till end of May. We just started Week 7 today, so we’re tacking on another 4 weeks.
“Creepy” and no one mentions the new alleged confirmation of Tara Reade's story?

I had originally meant this to cover the Trump Administration and the gloablist efforts against it.
But your point is apt. While the Global Warming hoax is a mere 50 years old we have the Free Trade hoax and the pervasive River of History.
Ever since the US was founded the Aristocracy has been trying to get their serfs back.

40 Million people in Cal - 1,700 Covid-19 deaths over 3-4 months. What a joke.
The Dem Party is an evil enterprise.
Drudge has managed to not cover the new Biden information.

Nativity
“Notre crime est del’homme” Lamartine. ‘L’homme.’
Everything stained: The tea stains the cup,
The cup stains the counter, the foot stains the snow,
The moon stains the air. Everything said.
I am told this is not an original thought.
Below, what was forgotten and cold,
As if it were not merely, actually true,
There was a birth, the unthinking was done
And this messy mix of snow and blood
Produced a word that meant ‘goodbye’ or ‘hello’,
Unsorting a chaos into ‘this one and that’
And saying “Insofar as I am here, that is there.”
Or if they are ‘mad’, we are ‘mad’, since
Neither they nor we can prove the obvious:
That Johnson kicked a stone but Berkeley
Was already dead, that the delusion suffices
To make a few words bring a cup of tea
And that, without God, preserving the hollow
Takes so long to say, everyman
Could seek to find
Putrefaction of his mother,
Of his brother, of his kind.
Lewis And Martina
L: A broken nose more expresses health
Than your ridiculous screams and cries.
I keep, at least, some human cowardice
At home. Making tea in the grubby room
but acknowledging this Angel. he will not,
For the moment, destroy me . That you wished
To deliver yourself to man was what disappointed.
M: There was no sense, speaking in the wrong language,
In any action. Neither theirs nor mine.
If I felt or smelt destruction don’t think of it
As intended. I have told people as, perhaps,
A piece of vanity, that I saw things.
Nothing was so crude. Only those who wished to love me.
They could not. Hate becomes, sometime, stronger than love.
L: And yet, for me, nothing was more ‘subtle’ than mine.
To you it was merely looks, a means of accommodating
Body to body and the dysfunction I must finally feel
When doubt had to sleep with both of us. I ached
And I ache everyday for what, well, I never wanted.
For I tried for merely a word that would say
You know me.
M: I know you but
You were not enough. Or never could be.
Listen, Lewis, I joy in those few months
When we really were discovering what it was
that always is so strange about each other:
Our mortality, our distant death, our always otherness.
Don’t you see – I have gone there,
I have lost you,
I have lost myself. And your child
Is the only human word I can now discover.
I hate you. You were not an Angel. I hate myself
For saying this. How could I demand this impossible?
L: No, you could not. And yet you, O beautiful you,
had a right to. You had a claim on an Angel.
But he did not come. Only me. I love you.
M: But you, my fool, my once-was-guest, remember:
Love cannot be there merely to please you.
We women are accused of eating hearts –
it is not us but God that burns your soul,
it is not I, it is never I, but these fragments,
These joys and sorrows, this ecstasy you refuse
To forget. Don’t forget. I may be mad
But I do not miss the compliment.
For in a glass I joy greatly at what memory can produce.
The happiness of a boy who cried “I love you!”
Because he had never loved before nor has since.
L: I had never loved before nor have since.

I'd suggest returning to the format of the blog moderator. Wait out the disturbance and confusion until Inga confesses.
With the reporting day nearing its end, it looks like we have the second day in a row with new deaths at about half the peak days' levels. Fantastic!
@Kyjo - good stuff, man!
Carry on, Comrades.
“I'd suggest returning to the format of the blog moderator. Wait out the disturbance and confusion until Inga confesses.”
Excuse meeeee! I was busy with other things most of the day and was not involved in the fracas.

So it looks like Tara Reade's accusation may take Biden down before the convention. I think this has been her purpose all along. Now, it all has to come out quickly, before the convention, so that the Dems can slot someone else into position.

Redeemed by its being empty.
And though I expect you
It is only now as sleep
Its knowledge of forgetfulness:
Soft on the pavement, a bruise
Before the blows of emptied halls,
Uncertain cries, the poverty of clubs –
I expect you like you your drugs
A pleasure more in keeping
With wished for happiness than
The reality of a wide awake buzz.
Or, you a child, one of the many,
Lost in a Minoan fold,
A labyrinthine fantasy,
A Minotaur expecting
Your Perseus, your Ariadne?

Like a pall, a shadowed fissure
Entered as the mythology
Of our own fear, intimate
But civic, private, also public,
The town criers, the officials,
The citizenry, covenant arteries,
A lonely Hell. There your son,
My mother, wife or child
So difficult to hear or left unheard
All that was not, will not, cannot be said.
Folded as comfort and disillusion
An hour dawn will unroll.
Odd Numbers.
Odd numbers on a scrap of paper
Found in my library Blake, seeming so familiar:
Did whoever wrote that read this or underline
And spoil, gather like a hoarder scattered words
That confirmed his or her own boredom,
Were these accessed digits loves, vague catches
Of possible friends, the desperate last
Samaritan to a falling despair
Or the casual overflow of the overly social:
What did Blake say except how we are born
Bludgeoned by our imaginings, sweating
An infernal magic, ignored and burdened
With needed, wrong acquaintance: dictums
Of law and friendship, a private room,
The fantastic visions of candlelight,
Silence of before the telephone?
Is he or she a friend, this Blake ‘scholar’,
This desecrator, this egotist,
This humanity? Probably not.

I wouldn't be surprised if after the next election more aggressive steps are taken at Fox to move Tucker, Hannity and Ingraham out.
Surely they all asked some girl out on a date 20 years ago or got drunk at a party at some point.

We already know this is happening.
These are the "assumed" and "presumed" cases of people who died in their homes because they were too afraid to go to the hospital.
COVID-19 is being put on their death certificates anyway.

Are you making a joke?
That is a great parody of leftist thought either way.
Is that from apocalypse now, willard was supposed to be special forces right.
Kurtz is loosely based on robert rheault, he executed a agent who was working for the viet comg if memory serves.
320,
Many?
I can now rent an ATV and clean it at the car wash...
SMDH.

"A couple of things they underline which the MSM seems to ignore: hospitals are suffering financially while needed procedures are not being performed; patients who should be seeing doctors or receiving treatment are afraid to go to the hospital; emergency rooms are seeing escalating problems of domestic violence. "
Mayo Clinic is furloughing or reducing the hours of about 42 percent of its 70,000 employees across all of its campuses in an attempt to mitigate the financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Madison, UW and St. Marys Hospitals are cutting pay, cutting hours, and furloughing workers.
It's beginning to look like the virus got the health care system after all, just not in the manner we were warned about.
Original Mike,
Indeed. And it is crazy-making that the idjits making decisions to remain shutdown cannot seem to grasp the scope of the destruction they are visiting on the system.
Take care anne

Good luck Anne.
"In Madison, UW and St. Marys Hospitals are cutting pay, cutting hours, and furloughing workers."
I hope one of them was one of the docs writing fraudulent scripts to Act 10 protesters.
"In Madison, UW and St. Marys Hospitals are cutting pay, cutting hours, and furloughing workers."
More "marginal businesses." Ef'm. We had to destroy healthcare to save it.

Good luck with your operation.
Magnum is put under quarantine for exposure to African hemorrhagic fever. Despite the big sign on the door, Higgins comes barging into the guest house where Magnum lives to yell at Magnum.
Now Higgins is under quarantine.
Anne-I-Am: bad news about the lesion, but I'm glad that you're getting it addressed. Our governor has graciously conceded that non-critical medical procedures can start...in May.
Walter, you can take your ATV and get the engine worked on and have that tear in the saddle repaired.
Of course, if they ask everyone else to vacate the property, they could come out and stroll the grounds to their hearts content.
Of course, it also looks like the quarantine is a sham.
Art imitates life.
Tomcc,
And of course, he decides what is critical and what is not?
I wonder how long it will take for some physicians to decide they are going to provide care no matter what. That to continue to adhere to these insane guidelines is a violation of their oath.
Thank you all for the good wishes.

320,
I picture our betters in committee thinking that invoking "Badger" and "ATVs" are sufficient opium for the masses.
I suspect they are getting some Packers aligned to the program.
'Its a travesty of two mockerys of a sham'
Btw, "It's not the flu!", except when it comes to escaping lockdown...

I
am
bored.
Anne-I-am, I sincerely wish you the best of luck tomorrow.
I really am. I'm not just saying I am.
You tube just took down the video made by the 2 CA docs. Apparently it’s because it goes against WHO dictates...anyone surprised??
Hope is a luxury we cant have same with truth.
4 posts to say you're bored?
Boring.
Sigh.
No, not four.
Too bored to even go to bed.
"anyone surprised??"
I am embarrassed to say I am. Time and again I am surprised by the left's propensity for censorship. You'd think I'd learn.
1984 its a how to manual, which orwell modeled on the bbc world service.
bored (adj.) "wearied, suffering from ennui"
Did you know that I have never before used the word "ennui"?
And now I've used the word "ennui" three times at once.
I like to be kind to my friends.
He was an etonian like ian fleming and pattick macnee (and john steed) served in the british civil service in burma, was he wealthy not really.
I forgot what I was going to say.
Oh yeah -- there was a big drop in the number of deaths (and cases) yesterday. But that has been the case for many Sundays. The thing is that usually we would then get a substantial spike on Monday as cases that were unreported on Sunday were reported on Monday. But there has been no spike today.
Nevertheless, the just now newly updated model by Bill Gates' organization has been revised upward by 7,000 deaths, now predicting 74,000 deaths.
Whatever dude, its like the automated computer with the 500 year war.
So a blame Trump strategy isn't likely to succeed.
That strategy is just a diversionary tactic.
The real strategy is to win through the traditional way -- cheat.
The increase appears to be due to a forecast that the decline with not be as steep as the assent.
etonians had access to quality p**** but so did lots of other people who did not go to eton
As God is my witness I would fight you before I would let you enroll my son or daughter at eton
had orwell been pals with my friends when he was young he would have had a much better life
He wasnt the most sociable fellow
So how 'bout them L.A. Lakers, huh?
Knicks fan myself, but I get the Lakers thing
The Bad Seed, guesting on Magnum, does NOT look at all the same.
So the real life julia, the back story to john steed is he was in a fight with james bond and they were both expelled
yeah that is close but remember AUTHORS are not ever going to tell the other side of the story
look, nobody who knows what is going on is ever expelled from anywhere that is worth not being expelled from
The Forest of Arden, not the court of Kim Jong Henry, is where the best of the Englishmen flourished
extrapolate
Moab is my washpot
as for Fleming, not the sort of guy who understood women
Sonia was a starf*cker. Eileen was the wife in the difficult days.
emergency rooms are seeing escalating problems of domestic violence
Several of y'all owe me an apology. I expressed concern about this very early on and some people who think they hold a monopoly on virtue -- or think that the only possible victims of this whole sorry affair are those in ICU beds with covid -- said I was being a drama queen. Just sayin'.
and by y'all I do not refer to anyone posting in this thread tonight. Just being petulant.
Pants,
Trump seemed well aware of all that..before he bypassed it.
I think Birx hired a theatre troop to do a die in at the WH.
@Anne-I-am:
I am curious about how the recent polling showing Biden supposedly beating Trump will affect this push to replace him as their candidate.
I still marvel at my seeming ability to completely shut comment threads down. I can't count how many times my comment is the last one. Am I missing something here?
Or are my thoughts so astute as to make any further discussion moot?
@Anne-I-am: Good luck on your procedure tomorrow.
heyboom,
At after midnight, a bit unrealistic to expect immediate responses, posts.
heyboom, I'm right there with you. Timing is everything, but I can't get here earlier. Oh well.

Heyboom, get out of bed
Take a long thread and make it longer
Remember to comment after the start
Then you can end it, all the better
Na na na na-na-na-naa
I'm not 'bored' so much as terrified. If you're bored why post? I don't understand that.
This is me on fb, Ms Althouse

Narr
Anybody need any stuff?
He looked like Jim Morrison - he was beautiful! But damned, damned to hell. When he was 14 he was taken to borstal for burglaring.
Double post - sorry!
What was the point? I thought . But Martina had already called and, so I thought, you're tough - Lewis, tougher than salt - get out there! So I produce, allegedly, you can never believe Martina, a son?
But anger was all I felt - iron in my blood - and Martina said that, as soon as she saw me - violence - of course, it came from her but it was in me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5al0HmR4to
The older I get I think there are only two things true - Bob Dylan and the Bible - equally spurious, both betrayals
Can I tell how I met my love? Stumbling around, of course, holding the 'Red Book' of Ezra Pounds cantos - I'd been to the so called 'Modern Library', London, of course , I wended back home by meandering the streets, drinking, drinking, just drinking - when I got to Trafalgar Square I was completely blottoed - a British expression - think ink - and I sat there, self satisfied, drunk and 'important', and this girl comes begging for change - as usual I say, I have none - but she seems to squirm around my feet - I say 'what the fuck are you doing' she says 'what you got in your hands' I say 'poetry' She says 'read' - for the next four hours - she kept saying more - so I fell in love with her!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98Z2vQDqpVw I know, it bullshit - but still, in default
What you wan't is your ear to be hateful - then it will return to you - more welcome than glad, winter is better, those hurtful months when Bach was the only thing that rescue you.
This is the music I love - my passion is involved with - him - station to station
Everyone is better than me - everything I want just a tidal wave from me - everything tantalising like tantalus - every moment shifted as if I don't live - stupid, stupid, stupid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY77zDzNmYw
I know - I was thinking about it - you can't publish youtube crap - on principal! -- you're a good person, smarter than expected - I have a low expectation of women, from very bad experience
All politicians are cowards - they are not 'planning' on murdering us but 'experts' tell they must
'Slunk' - I invented it, but what word!
Now, i live in Morecambe, and it ain't so funny
