Zinc gives the HCQ an ion channel into the red blood cells where it protects the iron portion of the hemoglobin from viral hijacking. The virus kills by allowing the iron radical out of the blood cell, and this iron ion is toxic to the body. Simultaneously, that blood cell is now less capable of oxygen transport. The patients with this disease are losing blood oxygen DESPITE ventilation. From what I've been able to gather, there is a good chance of success - even for patients with highly advanced symptoms - if this drug treatment is administered with oxygen (with or without high pressure ventilation). Apparently, there are a few clinicians who believe the ventilation is doing more harm than good in many cases by keeping the lungs irritated and somewhat inflamed, and damaging the throat and windpipe.

To me this all seems to make sense. Not a doctor, but I know chemistry and biology about as well as my wife who teaches the former at HS Honors level. Iron ions in the blood bind and transport oxygen, and the disease that hydroxychloroquine is traditionally used to treat, malaria, messes with red blood cells in a somewhat similar fashion to the WuhuFlu. Lack of blood oxygen will kill you regardless of how well you're physically inhaling and exhaling.

Still not sure why the azithromyicn is helping, but maybe it works to stave off secondary bacterial infections while the immune system is working on killing the WuhuFlu. It's looking like this treatment basically negates the lethal effects of the virus, preventing it from hijacking blood cells and sapping your blood O2, so your body can fight it off on it's own.

Again, not a doctor, but if this is correct, then we might just have the final cure - aside from people who might be contraindicated for hydroxychloroquine, which should be a small number. And there are other drugs out there that have a protective action with red blood cells, so maybe those would work in substitute . . .; 4/6/20, 8:34 PM

I read that too. I don't know why that would be - unless maybe the zinc's ionic action on the cell membrane of the red blood cells (which allows the other drug to work better) also interferes with the WuhuFlu's ability to penetrate.

I take zinc supplements every other day, and on my bottle it says "Supports a Healthy Immune System". That's about half the reason I take it, actually. So maybe zinc in general has a good prophylactic effect of just boosting initial immune response, and also has a treatment effect if the virus gains a foothold and starts doing damage, by increasing the other drug's efficacy . . .; 4/6/20, 8:47 PM

I don't think this is really an exponential climb anymore. Oh, of course it is still exponential, but what I mean is that the particular number that we are referring to is dropping.

As many have said many times, worldometer is not showing the complete picture. Since it is mostly only the seriously ill that have been tested, usually people that have pneumonia or are close to having pneumonia then in most places we don't have numbers on all the people that were infected but did not get seriously ill.

But many individual countries are now reporting a falling number of new cases (and especially a falling number of seriously ill new cases).

So that's great.

At the moment the known world death toll is 75,000 and of course it is going to rise further. If we assume that everyone that has been tested was seriously ill (not true but almost true) then something like 9% of those who are both seriously ill and have the coronavirus are going to die.

But we have little idea of what the overall mortality rate is, since in most areas those who are not seriously ill have not been tested.

The exception is the Diamond Princess cruise ship and now Iceland, which is the new world leader in per capita testing. But Iceland may not be particularly representative of what is going to happen to the rest of the world since from early on they were doing extensive contact tracing (much like South Korea).; 4/6/20, 8:50 PM

She was a doctor but she couldn't visit the child save by phone. No one could. The child was quartered with her ninety year old parents and her daughter so the quarantine was strict. Iceland currently has 22 severe cases (including 4 deaths).

Now what would be interesting to know is the number of people in Iceland who have the coronavirus and who have or had pneumonia. That would roughly correspond to the US case count, and from that we could estimate what the actual US case count is.

As would I. There are some doctors, including one linked at Instapundit, that are still skeptical, but the trial data they have were for treatment regimes that didn't include zinc. Zinc is apparently the key to getting it working fast. Other sources claim that someone who is on death's door when the treatment begins absolutely NEED the extra zinc because their body has depleted the serum zinc levels it normally maintains in the blood in the effort of fighting off the disease and manufacturing new red blood cells.; 4/6/20, 9:09 PM

The author of this article, Derek Lowe, is a rapid TDS-er. And the trial he writes about, which I already alluded to above, did NOT include zinc in the treatment. Therefore, I regard those results as not applicable, because it's already been shown that zinc is very important for the HCQ to work it's magic, especially in advanced cases, which most of these trial subjects were.
