March 21, 2020

"Joe Biden is planning a regular shadow briefing... to show how he would handle the crisis and address what he calls the lies and failures of President Trump."

"Biden gave a preview of what’s to come in a conference call with reporters Friday, where he listed a litany of false and misleading statements from Trump.... 'President Trump stop saying false things, will ya?' Biden said. 'People are worried they are really frightened, when these things don't come through. He just exacerbates their concern. Stop saying false things you think make you sound like a hero and start putting the full weight of the federal government behind finding fast, safe and effective treatments.'... [H]e said, his house is being outfitted with equipment that would enable him to livestream events, have interactive tele-press conferences and broadcast interviews with network television. 'I would like to get in the position and we're trying to work out so that the headquarters ... to be able to accommodate my directly answering questions in front of a press that's assigned to me,' he said. 'We've hired a professional team to do that now. And excuse the expression that's a little above my pay grade to know how to do that.'"

Politico reports.

It is a real challenge for Biden and his people to figure out how to campaign from a distance. Sitting on the sidelines and taking potshots at the man who is working nonstop to manage the crisis — this might not feel right to some of us. Biden has to stay in the game somehow, but maybe less is more. Don't make the President's job any more difficult than it is. And don't turn on the cameras just to agitate us with non-insights like "People are worried... they are really frightened." Every guy in America knows how to watch TV and then turn on the videocam and live-stream about how the President bothers him.

Or... I guess Biden wouldn't know how to make such a video. He has "a professional team" to push the little buttons for him, and he's not embarrassed to call the work "above my pay grade."

If you're trying to remember when Obama used that expression, it was in answer to the question when does the unborn have human rights: "… whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade." I believe Obama was trying to say he is not God, so he cannot be the one to say where that subtle line is.

In the case of Biden, he was just trying to say, he doesn't do electronic gadgets. He didn't really mean that the work he can't do is above him. More like below him. Or part of a world that he hasn't engaged with and never will.

Biden’s in a bind. He has the example of McCain, who wrecked his campaign by suspending it during the banking crisis, but he cannot be seen as undermining Trump during the covid crisis. Best thing for Biden/the Democrat leasership in general, both for their cause politically and for the nation overall, would be to be extremely supportive of the President and his efforts, and if they have recommendations of different approaches, to do that privately.

With not-exactly-friends like Gavin Newsom and Andrew Cuomo talking about how well President Trump is dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, it seems clear that Biden is lapsing into the pattern of so many of President Trump's critics, which is, as Salena Zito so aptly put it, to take President Trump literally, but not seriously.

Do a lot of us wish President Trump would either do a better job of articulating his thoughts or shut up? Yes, we do. Nevertheless, I'll take the bombastic blowhard who is effective in practice over the articulate wordsmith who is completely useless in practice every day, and twice on Sunday.

But Biden's the guy telling coal miners they can just learn how to code. He can't learn anything new himself (and why not? too dumb? too old? too unwilling?) but some blue collar worker should be able to adjust quickly to the government's taking away his livelihood and adopt a whole new skill set.

Biden's handlers must have gotten some assurances from the media they will cover for him to try a stunt like this. The chance of it blowing up in their faces is pretty high. Maybe they see an opening on the economic crisis and think they can exploit that, but it would be a condemnation of Cuomo and Newsome more than Trump. It's hard to see how this is a good idea for his campaign or the country.

Second guessing from the sidelines is what Joe was born to do. That is most helpful in a crisis. Wrong move strategically. You can't compete with the office of the president, especially in a time of crisis.

Yes McCain screwed himself by suspending his campaign during the financial crisis. However he was running against a non-president. He didn't need to suspend his campaign. It was also later in the campaign season. There's a mountain of time before the general election. The ground today isn't the ground in Novemeber so why fight on it now?

Best thing Biden could do is to suspend. Do a couple funny tik-toks. Use celebrities. Heavily scripted. Meanwhile lay low on comments about what the President is doing. This saves your options for later in the cycle to point out that whatever Trump did wrong you would do differently and whatever Trump did right you would do the same.

Let's not forget, and let's continue to mention, that Joe Biden decried the China travel ban, put in place by the President on Jan. 31, as racist and xenophobic. Not only that, but at late as March 10, Democrats in the House and Senate introduced legislation to counteract the travel bans. The “No Ban Act,” introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and co-sponsored by 219 House Democrats, would have prevented Trump from implementing a travel ban on China and other countries. A similar measure was introduced by Democrats in the Senate.

Political correctness kills.

Here's another recent example:

https://twitter.com/SteveGuest/status/1238614231655895040?s=20

I don't see how Biden can run a "shadow" campaign, or any other campaign. He is simply not up to the task. Trump could dispatch him with one tweet: "Jill, take your husband home and please take good care of him. DNC, I give you permission to choose another candidate who knows where he is and what he's doing. Stop abusing the elderly."

Trump's election had devastating psychological effects on large segments of the American population, from young adults to women, to racial and LGBT communities. Individuals with mental health issues likewise were "shook" by his presidency. For these people, Covid 19 is the ONLY way to remove President Trump from office and to end their suffering. The Russia collusion hoax failed. Impeachment failed. This is it.

But the disease's toll will be light. Consider the following report from Oxford's Center for Evidence Based Medicine:

https://www.cebm.net/global-covid-19-case-fatality-rates/

These people are heavyweights. They concluded that the overall fatality rate of Covid 19 is about 0.3%. It may be even less. Our collective response, which is drived by celebrity culture, the media and Democratic governors, is clearly suicidal. Or, maybe, we were the suicidal ones when we elected Trump. If Hillary Clinton was President, the media would just have ignored Covid 19 and we all would have been better off. Covid 19 would have been a big nothing burger (except for 10 or 20,000 octogenarians and nonagenarians who would have died).

Bank failures next week and then, even relatively wealthy people, like most of the readers of this blog, are going to suffer. I don't keep piles of cash and gold in my home, do you?

This is a major problem for Democrats. Now they want to shut down the president’s news conferences so that they can only be shown edited by the Democrat media. The poll numbers for them are terrible, they are losing the election here and now.

Calls are increasing for cable networks to stop airing President Donald Trump’s press conferences live as critics believe Trump is turning White House news briefings into virtual campaign rallies that can “get people killed” with lies about the Coronavirus crisis. The pressure only increased after Trump’s Friday briefing. The Atlantic’s James Fallows believes the attention-starved Trump is turning the press conferences into “virtual campaign” rallies and Trump would actually lose interest in showing up if the media did not cover the briefings live.“Also, as a practical matter, if the briefings were no longer covered live, Trump would lose interest in attending himself,” Fallows argues. - From Brietbart

It will have to be a woman to placate the #metoo pink pussy hats, the intellectual core of the female wing of the party. A woman of color would be preferable to keep the Black Lives Matter, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters malcontents in line. Despite their protestations to the contrary, Michelle and Oprah will have to step up for the good of the nation.

Hallelujah! What a ticket!

Incidentally, I think we need to lift the lockdown and take the punch in the next couple of weeks, after having time to steel ourselves somewhat. Let the oldsters shelter and protect them, and go back to work. The Impeachment That Killed Americans

January 11: Chinese state media report the first known death from an illness originating in the Wuhan market.

January 15: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) holds a vote to send articles of impeachment to the Senate. Pelosi and House Democrats celebrate the “solemn” occasion with a signing ceremony, using commemorative pens.

January 21: The first person with coronavirus arrives in the United States from China, where he had been in Wuhan

January 23: The House impeachment managers make their opening arguments for removing President Trump.

January 23: China closes off the city of Wuhan completely to slow the spread of coronavirus to the rest of China.

January 30: Senators begin asking two days of questions of both sides in the president’s impeachment trial.

January 30: The World Health Organization declares a global health emergency as coronavirus continues to spread.

January 31: The Senate holds a vote on whether to allow further witnesses and documents in the impeachment trial.

January 31: President Trump declares a national health emergency and imposes a ban on travel to and from China. Former Vice President Joe Biden calls Trump’s decision “hysterical xenophobia … and fear-mongering.”

February 2: The first death from coronavirus outside China is reported in the Philippines.

February 3: House impeachment managers begin closing arguments, calling Trump a threat to national security.

February 4: President Trump talks about coronavirus in his State of the Union address; Pelosi rips up every page.

February 5: The Senate votes to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment, 52-48 and 53-47.

February 5: House Democrats finally take up coronavirus in the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia.

At the press conference Friday, Trump called out the NBC journolist for attempted sensationalist reporting. And then three other journalists tried to make THAT an issue, rather than listening to what Trump said to the NBC reporter about responsible press reporting of facts.

Reporters must be trained to ask tose gotcha-stsyle, "Have you stopped beating your wife?" questions, because they make zero sense to rational people. Asking for a statement to calm the fears of the American people is premised on several undemonstrated issues: that the citizenry is fearful, that it needs calming, that the previous 30 minutes of presidential Q&A didn't already cover all that needed saying, that whatever Trump might say would be taken as something to criticize, yet which proved the US was in a panic, and so on.

Pompeo's backing up Trump's reproach to the NBC reporter's asshat "gotcha" attempt was also masterful, and well deserved by the rabid fearmongering anti-Trump reporters, who, by the way, don't seem all that appreciative of the daily, extensive, detailed press briefings and Q&A, after such a long period of crying over their inability to be on camera asking questions of Trump. The White House press is damn sure on camera now, daily, and they are not covering themselves in glory.

FROM THE SAME INTEL CLOWNS WHO CLAIMED RUSSIA STOLE THE 2016 ELECTION: Today’s Washington Post front page features a sensational story claiming the intelligence community was warning President Trump and Congress way back in January that coronavirus was going to be a worldwide pandemic.

But closely reading the key graph shows it to be based on one anonymous source, plus the opinions of anonymous “others:”

“Intelligence agencies ‘have been warning on this since January,’ said a U.S. official who had access to intelligence reporting that was disseminated to members of Congress and their staffs as well as to officials in the Trump administration, and who, along with others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive information.”

And. on the opinion page (or do I repeat myself?), what is this but “nine former intelligence chiefs” warning that:

“We cannot let the covid-19 pandemic be a cover for the deeply destructive path being pursued by the Trump administration. The most recent illustration of this unprecedented attack is the continuing dismissal of career intelligence professionals — officers who have ably served both Republican and Democratic administrations regardless of their personal political stripe.”
*******
Translation: Trump is remaking the leadership of the intelligence community, displacing the entrenched bureaucrats – careerists and career political operators – who tried to sell us the Russia hoax, the Mueller probe and the quid pro quo. So in response, they are now they’re weaponizing the coronavirus.

Ron Winkleheimer said...

Just in case you didn't click on Michael the M's fun links, here's our Joe in 1987:

"In a chance encounter with reporters Tuesday, Biden said he still was in the race, but he acknowledged his campaign may have been ''overwhelmed'' by reports that he had used extensive quotes from other politicians without attributing them, had failed a law school course after failing to attribute a long quotation in a paper he wrote, and had inaccurately and angrily boasted about his academic record during a campaign appearance in New Hampshire.

Some Democratic observers said the final blow to Biden`s chances was release of the videotape of his response to Frank Fahey, the Claremont, N.H., teacher who asked Biden on April 2 where he had gone to law school and how well he had done.

''I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do,'' Biden angrily replied. He proceeded to misstate his academic record, but to some political strategists it was his manner that did the most damage. ''People looked at that tape and saw a man acting like a maniac,'' one Democratic political consultant said."
