Harvey Weinstein gets 23 years.

Hollywood Reporter reports.
Before his sentencing, Weinstein — who opted not to testify during his New York sexual assault trial — addressed the judge. Speaking, in a low voice, of the women who have accused him of misconduct, he said, "I have great remorse for all of you. I have great remorse for all women.... I really feel remorse for this situation. I feel it deeply in my heart."

Lead prosecutor Joan Illuzzi had asked Judge Burke to sentence Weinstein to "the maximum or near the maximum" years in prison, which could have been up to 29 years....

“I’m the scariest motherfucker you’ll ever have as an enemy in this town!” - also Harvey Weinstein to a reporter, circa 2003.

Odds on how long he survives in prison? One thing is certain if he hints at a tell-all book those odds are dropping quickly.

Good riddance. I wonder if he'll get Epsteined.

I almost feel sorry for Weinstein for the Greek tragedy that is his twilight years.

Almost. He deserves this fate too much to take that last step from pity to true caring.

Weinstein is trying to guess what the judge wants to hear.

Sometimes I read your posts on women and think, sad, but true. Other times, not so much.

That's quite the non apology...

The most reputable thing about Joe Biden is that, as far as I've read, he had very little connection to Weinstein for powerful Democrat.

That's the fuckin' he gets for the rapin' he got.

Would anyone be surprised at this point if Weinstein died very soon of some kind of accident in prison? I wonder if he fully considered the downside of his approach at the trial of appearing as frail as possible to get some sympathy.

I don't think he did anything worth going to prison for because his supposed victims stated, by their actions at the time, that they didn't think he did anything worth going to prison for.

HOW will they decide on which starlets for it to feature?

I dunno, 23 years: isn't 23 kind of old for Hollywood?

Too bad he didn't feel this way, before he raped them.

I'm not condoning Harvey's behavior, but it's interesting that he managed to have his name plastered on many of the most successful movies. He had his hands on American culture.

He's a complete pervert. How does one reconcile that?

Special shout out to lead prosecutor, Joan Illuzzi and her team. Tough case.

Hollywood condoned it for years.

It was a massive open secret, and they looked the other way.

They condone Roman Polanski, too. Weinstein is a shit, but he stood up and faced justice. That puts him way ahead of Polanski, in my book, who fled the country after being convicted rather than face sentencing.

If anything, Weinstein deserves 23 years for being the reason Rose McGowan is a public figure again.

There is a man who was convicted and had the book thrown at him for being ugly and loathsome at the peak of the MeToo hysteria. These particular rape charges against him were bullshit. (There are others that might represent *actual* rape; I don't know about them.)

Bay Area Guy said...

By the way, How Many Dems took political money from Harvey over the years?

Anyone?

Jason said...

I would love to see Polanski extradited to serve his sentence in the U.S.

I'm sure political interests in California, dependent on Hollywood money, have been doing their best to block it.

Hollywood is a cesspool of sexual perversion, narcissism, and self-importance. It's a toxic combination of rapacious capitalism and a 1960's libertine ethos. The whole thing is built on artifice.

The really under reported story on Hollywood, though, is the prevalence of young boys who are sexually abused. Unlike the #MeToo starlets who traded sex for fame, money, and power, most of these kids get passed around like a piece of meat for a few years and thrown away with their lives destroyed as the predators move on to the next crop. Even #MeToo champion Rose McGowan defended the child rapist and pornographer Victor Salva, when she starred in a film he directed. Whoopi Goldberg defended Roman Polanki on the grounds that it wasn't "real rape." I guess a 44-year-old man feeding Quaaludes to a 13-year-old and ass fucking her isn't "real rape."

This is a bonanza for lawyers.

How much do you think Harvey will spend on appeals. It would be easy to convince him that he could stay out of jail for the next 5 years on appeal. Then, he could claim cruel and unusual punishment due to his age and (faked) physical state.

"I feel remorse for all women." A Clintonesque apology if ever there was one. Equal remorse for the girls sold into bondage and the S&M mistress. For the Epstein Island girls and for those Wall Street women oppressed by men who hold doors open for them. Inside every Hollywood predator is a feminist dying to get out. No, really, Hillary was their...

But this is the river of history.

The powerful use their power to live out human desires and avoid consequences. It is human nature and it drives the flow. Aristocracy throughout history has come up with all sorts of debased shit.

First comes hubris.

Don't know about most states, but in California, first degree murder is 25 to life and second degree murder is 15 to life.

Remorse "for" you? Remorse "for" all women? An odd choice of preposition. Remorse "toward" would be correct. Remorse "about" his acts (rather than "for" the victims) would be even better.

Remorse "for" them sounds like he's sorry he met them, not sorry he victimized them.

That's the real story. Not Weinstein's liberal indulgence of friends with "benefits", which is merely transsocial in a capitalist... free market economy.

The Feldman documentary names Charlie Sheen among other, lesser known, Hollywood types. It will probably end up going nowhere.

Kevin Spacey, while not prosecuted, has paid a recent price.

Bryan Singer, however, continues to find work.

Milo Yiannopoulos went on Joe Rogan's podcast in 2015 and made light of underage sex, remarking how gay parties in Hollywood are full of underage teens available for sex. Someone dug the video up in 2017, and it was used to basically end Milo's career.

This is round 1. With the rich and powerful, its not over till its over. And even if Weinstein goes to jail, they'll be a pardon or commutation in a few years. But I'm amazed it went this far.

Seems like a really long time for 'raping' girls who were just gonna allow themselves to be sexualized on screen anyway. I mean, Seth McFarlane's 'I saw your boobs' song from a few Oscars ago wasn't exactly a fantasy or written in a vaccuum.

F all these 'strong, independent women' and their inability to avoid the clutches of the well-known pervy old Jew.

Agree. Shorter OED (Third Ed.) says "remorse" is "1. R[emorse] of conscience (or mind)...Now somewhat rare and arch[aic] 2. A feeling of compunction, or of deep regret and repentance, for a sin or wrong committed, late [Middle English]...3. Sorrow, pity, compassion; also pl. signs of tender feeling -1700. 4. Regretful or remorseful remembrance or recollection of a thing -1695...A solemn obligation. [Shakespeare]. 5. Biting or cutting force. SPENSER."

So this is a word with several distinct flavors. In which sense does HW mean it? His choice of prepositions seems to add to the ambiguity. Strange that one with such skill at producing dramatic works, could not have prepared and delivered a more powerful statement at the crux of his own drama.

I don't want to be sympathetic to a guy who I think is a creep, but I can't help wondering if he will be jailed with violent rapists who actually threatened to kill their victims? That doesn't seem fair. A twenty three year sentence seems a lot considering Weinstein never was violent or used the threat of physical violence. If he hadn't been a major director in Hollywood none of those actresses would have deigned to spend a single minute in his company. Yes, Weinstein allegedly molested/raped a lot of other women but then so did Bill Cosby and he received a 3-10 year sentence.

This is such bullshit. Cosby drugged and raped dozens of women and got 3 - 10 years. Cosby's victims did not end up hugging him at the Oscars. Weinstein may not have raped any of these women. He's being railroaded. The judge is a hack in black.

Not a good day for the justice system. Women run it now. Feelings rule.

rhhardin said...

The charge of rape ought to be done away with entirely. Women can't handle it.

Make it assault and battery. There's no more feminine modesty anyway, which was once what was peculiar to rape.
