How did that work out for Hillary?

No - Trump has not shown cognitive decline. His speaking pattern has always been weird. On the other hand, Biden has slipped considerably over the last four years. He has always been gaff prone but he now is forgetting names, etc.

The problem is that Trump actually makes sense except to people who are heavily invested in pretending he doesn’t. So it’s an argument that only works with people the Democrats already have sewn up. Trump is not going to be "warned off.”

Obama acted like a dictator within his own party, you know the kind, the ones who dispose of every person who is a threat to actually be able to govern.

This is also a repercussion of Obamacare, which wiped out a generation of moderate Democrats. Democrats like Bill Clinton was, who could poach right leaning independents.

So the MSM admits Biden is cognitively challenged. And the best it can do is hope voters call it a wash. That's not an argument from a position of strength.

Having personal experience watching my own mother’s dementia and how it progressed I believe Joe is in the early stages. His behavior and my mother’s are quite similar. Trump, I see no signs of dementia at all. Yes, he sometimes talks funny or says weird things but I see nothing in his speech or behavior that suggest dementia. If I were a Democrat and a Biden supporter I would be very worried about a debate between the two as I believe Joe’s condition will.become quite visible to everyone.

Seems like they only trust Biden to stand in front of people for short periods of time. Last couple of speeches were less than 10 minutes.

There is a tradition where I come from in NJ of yanking losing candidates half way through the election and replacing them on the ballot with someone they think can win. Example: Lautenberg replacing Toricelli. Biden's job was to stop Bernie. Expect a switcheroo shortly after the convention.

rehajm, I would encourage to watch an unedited Biden appearance from the last few weeks. he does ok reading the teleprompter, but even then once in a while he loses his place and there is a completely lost look on his face. and when he goes off script, he is immediately lost. it looks like he doesn't always know what he's saying, and his emotional projections are not appropriate to the sentiment: he's just yelling. you can also see the fear on his face when he realizes he needs to get back to his speech, and he does weird segues like stopping mid-sentence and saying stuff like "aw, you didn't want me getting all worked up about this."

this is a guy who's been giving political speeches his entire life, and that's something he used to do very well. his biggest asset, actually, which only hurt him when the content was lifted from other people, say. it's coginitive decline and it's not a mild, age related slowing down, either.

CStanley said...

Both Trump and Biden have developed political characters as their public personas. Trump has a character that he plays based on his years of TV reality show and wrestling. He found that it played well to conservative audiences and used it well to his advantage. When you listen to old interviews of Trump it’s clear that he is more intelligent than the character that he plays might be suspected to be,

Biden for decades has also a persona based on the regular blue collar guy who rode the train into DC every day. Part of this persona is acting like he’s the guy who will take on a fight.

They both use these personas to paper over their lack of detailed knowledge when speaking extemporaneously. I’m not saying that to belittle either of them, it’s just patently true that neither is a policy wonk. But of the two, Trumps performance in this regard has remained consistent (if anything his public speaking has improved) while Biden is clearly less adept than he was in the past. He’s always sort of started sentences and then trailed off at times but now he does it constantly. It also seems like he’s used to doing that frequently when the audience reacts (using the crowd noise as an excuse to not finish his sentences) but now the crowd enthusiasm is so lackluster that it just doesn’t work.

I’m not sure that this is Alzheimer’s (and generally don’t think such a diagnosis can or should be made from a distance) but even if it’s just normal cognitive slowing and senescence it’s not good. Why would someone think their qualified for one of the hardest jobs on the planet in that state (and why would voters agree to give home the job??)

There has been, to my knowledge, only one candidate ever replaced during a presidential election - 1972 when Thomas Eagleton was replaced by Sargent Shriver. Look how well that worked for the Democrats.

Biden is likely going into the convention with a clear majority of delegates at this point. The clear second choice is Bernie. (And why does everyone consistently use given name for Bernie and surname for Biden?) If Biden is sidelined at the convention and the nomination doesn't go to Bernie, well, the young Bernie Bros aren't going to vote for the Democrat candidate. If he's replaced after the convention, I strongly suspect a lot of people are going to be turned off by the Democrat Party shenanigans. They are in a classic no win situation for which they have only themselves to blame.

Trump's on his game. Biden obviously not.

Something to keep in mind. Trump as a big-time businessman has always been in a leadership role. Biden on the other hand has never lead. In the Senate he was one of 100; as Obama's VP he was a follower, directed by Obama/Jarrett as what he was to be doing. He's not a leader. And on this current campaign his non-leadership is quite evident. Jill, the non-doctor Doctor Jill, is doing a lot of the stage-management.

Trump has been President for three years. He has held countless rallies. He has shown almost super-human energy and stamina, especially for someone his age. He has a peculiar speaking style, but the country recognizes it and has gotten used to it.

Biden, even without the "gaffes," sounds old, tired, and void of energy. He gave a speech yesterday in Columbus, Ohio, which I watched live. (Ironically, it was on the topic of gun control, several hours after his argument with the worker in Detroit where he denied wanting to take his guns.) Biden didn't make any obvious mistakes, but he literally drained the energy from the room. I don't think he has the physical strength to do what's required of him, much less the intellectual capacity. Trump won't need a debate to prove that Biden's time has past.

mtrobertslaw said...

Joe gets the nomination. Then he addresses the convention and says he just doesn't have the energy anymore to compete in the general election and cannot in good faith accept the nomination. Obama rushes over Hillary's hotel suite and returns with Hillary in tow. Hillary then addresses the convention and says in light of what just happened, and out of her deep love for her country, she must offer herself as a candidate for president. The convention immediately votes to offer her the nomination. And the chaos begins.

Lack of detailed knowledge... interesting phrase. Detailed knowledge of what? Trump has demonstrated an ability to get things done, the biggest example being the Wollman Rink. NYC and it's myriad of politicians had failed to repair and get the ice rink in operation, over years of trying. DO you honestly think Trump had any idea of all the details involved in ice rink construction? What he does know is how to hire the people who do and get them to do the job, properly.

Jimmy Carter was a policy wonk. Look how that turned out. Trump is a manager. An early story from his administration was that he was asked if a certain military operation should proceed. Trump asked pretty much 1. Do they know what they're doing? 2. Does it meet previously stated objectives? 3. Why are you asking me since 1 and 2 are yes? He trusts people below to do their jobs - and woe be unto them if they screw up. Look at the Alabama primary and who he endorsed for an example.

People should be in jail already over the Russian collusion hoax. And the new presiding FISA judge has pretty much said so. Fallout from that is far from over. And, if you've been following, they're questioning people about the illegal server....

Yeah I was trying to preempt this kind of pushback by saying that I wasn’t implying criticism. As you correctly go on to elaborate in your comment, policy wonks are often ineffective anyway.

My point is just that both Biden and Trump speak like “regular guys”. One of them though (Trump) is effective, energetic, and has improved over time. Thee fundamental problem with this strategy is the idea that you can, with a handful of ads, change how people think about someone who's been on TV daily for four years. It's far too late to try to start the "Trump is senile" attack, only partisans trying to shore up Biden will pretend to believe it. Everybody already knows what they think of Trump.

Really, it's absurd, the continuing left-wing belief in the power of advertising. From the old theory in the 1950s that GM had won capitalism forever because it was able to use advertising to artificially create demand for its products, to the still-current idea that the rich can buy elections (never mind Bloomberg and Steyer), the left has absolute faith that you can mind-control the American people with the right pitch and ad blitz.

Franks says, well, you have to be careful calling everything a lie, and asks this guy if he's bothered by all the lies told about Trump, namely Russian collusion, FISA spying, Mueller and what not.

This guy, he says not so fast Frank. I have a copy of the Mueller report. No lies, Trump is not innocent.

Then this guy tells Frank he's going to send him a copy of (inaudible) written by (Inaudible).

Franks busts out laughing "THAT GUY IS A NEVER TRUMPER!" how is he credible? This guy says "Hey, he's a lifelong republican just like me.

Finally, wrapping up the call Franks says go ahead and sent it to me. Then Frank says...

...thanks for the call Chuck.

My jaw dropped.

I agree with some that Biden drops out of the race before the convention, after he has enough votes to deny the nomination to Sanders.

At the convention, there will be a Wellstone-like funeral for Joe's mind. Major Democrats will eulogize him, highlighted by Obama praising him for doing it for the sake of the Party. There will be cheers and tears. Biden will have a short ten-minutes to speak, the waves of appreciation and love will flow forth.

He will release his delegates to maybe no one and then exits stage left, or right, or off the front of the stage of history.

Cut. Print it.

That would be great. Listening to him I kept thinking everything this guy is saying seems like I've already seen it written, in text. On this blog.

I should add Frank asked him to name a lie, this guy said it would literally take him all day to name them, but didn't name a single one. Unexpectedly, as Drago would say.

I should note that I believe Fullmoon and possibly others have called out LLR-lefty Chuck for posting his typical pro-left schtick on other websites and chat blogs.

If these are indeed the work of our LLR-lefty Chuck, then it would simply provide additional evidence upon the already existing mountain of evidence that LLR-lefty Chuck is anything but a "lifelong republican".

"And I have a simple proposition here: I’m here to ask you for your help. Where I come from, you don’t get far unless you ask. My name’s Joe Biden. I’m a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate. Look me over. If you like what you see, help out. If not, vote for the other Biden. Give me a look though, okay?”

Problem with Greenwald’s tweet is that Trump doesn’t exhibit neurological impairment in his public appearances. Biden does. Nothing has to be doctored with Biden. Whatever it is that he exhibits is as plain as the nose on his face. Not so with Trump. He has suffered from a avalanche of fake news, out of context quotes, utter misconstruals of what he’s said and so on such that eventually the distortions have come back to bite their purveyors in the ass. Now everything they try to pin on Trump is one more cry of wolf, wolf be there or not. Showing Trump as neurologically impaired would be fake news and the more it’s done the more it will redound badly on those issuing it and all to Trump’s benefit. Plus, Greenwald is slippery with “nonsense.” He conflates silliness with neurological defect.

And don't forget to keep the record player on at night.

"Trump has dementia" is not a winner for the Dems.

First, the word "dementia" in any form between now and November is not a winner when Biden is constantly in their living rooms.

But second, setting up Trump to look super-sharp in the first debate against Biden when people expect him to be equally dim-witted is political suicide.

Not even Donna Brazile will be able to smile her way through that.

Poor James Carville.

Out of the frying pan of socialism and into the fire of dementia.

I don't think he planned on Biden being the one left standing.

What's My Age Again?
Blink-182

I took her out, it was a Tuesday night
I wore cologne to get the feeling right
I started sniffing hair, she said she was my sis
But then I turned on the TV

And that's about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're seventy three
And I'm still more amused by TV shows
What the hell is A.D.D.?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again, what's my age again?

Then later on, on the drive home
Called Pelosi from my new iPhone
I said I was the cops
And your husband's in jail
The state looks down on sodomy

And that's about the time that bitch hung up on me
Nobody likes you when you're seventy three
And I'm still more amused by prank phone calls
What the hell is call ID?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again, what's my age…

And that's about the time we went to Milwaukee
Nobody likes you when you're seventy three
And you still act like you're in freshman year
What the hell is wrong with me?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again, what's my age again?

That's about the time I broke the DNC
No one should take themselves so seriously
With many years ahead to fall in line
Maybe they voted for the other Biden
I never want to act my age
What's my age again, what's my age again?
What's my age again?

... Seriously, how old am I?
