February 25, 2020

Let's talk about the debate. It's about to start.

1. I made my predictions first thing this morning about what was going to happen and what ought to happen, and I got myself thinking this was going to be the greatest debate of all time... except that Tom Steyer will be there. That's so dull. I'm looking for a savage fight!

2. I'm just going to write in a numbered list. It's too boring to write time stamps in classic live-blogging style. And I'm not even sure I'm going to live blog. But I feel inspired, and they're starting early tonight — 7:00 my time. We'll see what happens.

3. My son John is live-blogging here. He mentions that the show is on CBS. My cable company is feuding with CBS these days, so I had to figure out a different source. We're watching on BET. Caught the end of the NAACP Image Awards.

4. How can a Democratic Socialist do better with the economy than Trump? — the first question, to Sanders. He takes a swipe at Bloomberg, so Bloomberg gets to speak. He lashes out and says Russia is helping Sanders get elected. Sanders is touched off, starts raving, and accidentally hits the microphone twice.

5. Warren accuses Bernie's team of "trashing" her. She did the work, and they didn't, and then they attacked. I predicted a secret alliance between Warren and Sanders. Doesn't look like that.

6. Biden attacks Bernie for the 9 deaths at the South Carolina church... because he voted against the Brady Bill 5 times. A vicious attack.

7. "I'm hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight" (Bernie).

8. "That single garment of destimy"  — a Klobuchar garble. I forget what she was talking about. I was thinking about her garments, which are the dreariest color imaginable (dark brownish purple).

9. "I have been training for this job since I stepped on the pile — that was still smoldering — of 9/11" — Bloomberg.

10. Warren accuses Bloomberg of saying something he says he never said: "Kill it" (to a pregnant woman). Big reaction from the audience.

11. The moderators have totally lost control. The candidates are all talking at once, and the topic is: math. Yeesh!

12. After the break, there are 3 more moderators. I hope there's a little more order. The topic now is gun control. They have to vie for who's most controlling.

13. I got bored. There's a lot of recitation of proposals, not so much attacking each other. I'm not going to try to provide you with notes on that. This is the problem with live-blogging. If you start, then people expect you to keep going....

Both Jews gave the wrong answer on Israel.

The right answer is, "I don't give a fuck. Interesting places, but let them fight their own battles over there and figure out whether they're going to get along with their neighbors on their own."

Elizabeth Warren is onto the right answer.

Hmmmmm, what if Bloomy simply stays in all the way to the end to keep bloodying Sanders up by flooding the airwaves with some of Bernies more "interesting" comments over the years?

Then, when Sanders enters the convention with a non-majority plurality and that first vote goes the way we think it will, I wonder who Bloomy knows and would be happy to support and could waltz right in to pick up all the pieces and "unite" the party?

I wonder who that might be?......

I can tell you right now the 17,439 paid consultants on Bloomy's staff are going to strongly encourage him to stay in all the way!!

No, I chimed in to lament that Bloomberg was not mayor on 9/11

Bloomberg was elected right after 9/11 and was and always will be, justifiably, associated with leading NYC in a credibly strong and decisive way during a very traumatic time. That’s a very defensible statement.

And PeePeeTape: fairy nazi is not the preferred nomenclature. Homosexual ethnonationalost.

Now, I don't believe him, but the point is that I am not the audience he is speaking to.

As twisted as he is, I think Sanders is the only one who's comfortable in his own skin. Also, though I doubt he'd buy a round I'm pretty sure that the others would try to slick me out of something to take home with them.

Yes. Flawed to be sure and kind, but human and unafraid to speak because despite some policy shit he’s more or less been himself rather than play-acting a role. Amy K. Is in this respect the best conventional politician because she has a fake persona but it’s probably not that far from who she really is and she plays it pretty well. Bloomberg is agreeably human but not the kind you’d wanna drink with because he’s such a jerk.

Good God, that was boring.

They were pandering to South Carolina - the state that brought you Fort Sumter. Such a state should never decide races.

But we do want someone who's serious about the job they're going to do. We get our entertainment from the people who are actually good at entertaining.

But it seems you don't. Given that fact, what does Donald Trump do for you? Other than remind you of those good old days in the frat house filled with all kinds of non-consensual rubbing?

However decrepit and politically one-trick he is, Joe Biden absolutely did not deserve to have his and his son's integrity slashed just so that Trump could pretend to have an issue worth holding Russia's adversaries over the barrel for. Especially that soon after the death of his other son.

Trump is truly a rotten person.

Like 61% of Americans, my life is better than it was 3 years ago. I am financially better off. Younger members of my family landed good jobs out of college. On a personal note, I also married last year, and am quite happy.

I stuck it out to the end. I wasn't expecting anyone to say anything interesting or witty, but I hoped that someone would say something really nasty or stupid. There were some dumb remarks but nothing memorable. All in all, a waste of time. I'll skip the next debate....I couldn't follow exactly what Biden was saying, but he said said it in such a declarative, bombastic way that you would think he was saying something lucid and forthright. He did thank Obama for helping him achieve all those wonderful things that he's so famous and celebrated for.....Bernie and Warren can drill your back teeth, but I guess we're stuck with them for the duration....I could live through a Bloomberg or Klobuchar Presidency. They're not that annoying. Bloomberg sporadically says things that make sense. Buttigieg is sort of pleasant, and I like how he pretends to be more realistic than Bernie, but I sense that it's all an act......I get to vote in the Democratic primary in NY in April. I'll vote for Bloomberg.

William said...

For a nominal fee, I'm prepared to elaborate on my remarks as to how Bloomberg is the Democratic candidate best qualified to be President.

So voting for a groping sexual assailant made it possible for you to finally get married and finally do better financially. Sounds like you need the government a heck of a lot more than I do, or at least a way for it to reinforce your belief in it.

Paul Krugman is right. Having a discussion with people like you is the definition of arguing with zombies.

Make sure to go tidy your shrine to your government god. My life is quite fine without one.

61% of Americans had better lives in 2016 than they did in 2013. And over the three years prior to that. But the trick is so much more impressive to you when the Nazi comes in at the end of it to take credit.

"The dems had 4 years to come up with a viable contender, and this is what they have."

This is often observed and it sounds like a fair point, but then I think of some of the people I've worked with in my career. Try randomly assembling Six or seven people and see how much "normal" you come up with. Less than half, more often than not. Now randomly assemble six or seven politicians...

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I should be more compassionate and understanding about people whose lives not only never had any meaning, but never will.

People like that need a guy as empty and materialistic as Trump to relate to. It seems that's just how it goes.

I don't think most Americans are that empty. They like having meaningful lives. They don't just get off on fancying themselves as lesser pretend billionaires.

Bloomberg: "They talk about 40 Democrats. Twenty-one of those were people that I spent $100 million to help elect. All of the new Democrats that came in, put Nancy Pelosi in charge, and gave the Congress the ability to control this president, I bough . . . I, I got that."

Sorry Bloomberg, but you leaned in too much and that one was in. You bragged that you bought those Dem members of Congress.

I thought I saw Joe Biden have a Captain Queeg moment tonight. Joe was performing well--lots of energy, hand gestures, he was the guy tough enough to take out Corn Pop (his imaginary gangster). But if the plan was to show that he was full of energy for an old coot--he aced that part of the plan.

But there were seeming mental lapses. The shout fest was going on about how Trump had treated Kim Jong Un (aka Little Rocket Man). Biden was going to show how tough he was. He said Kim Jong Un was a thug, he was stealing oil and technology (don't know why Joe stuck oil in there--but that's what he did). Joe said he'd go straight to Beijing and tell the Chinese Minister to make Kim Jong Un knock it off. He would insist; he would not be denied. I wasn't certain whether Biden referred to Xi Jinping, the current Prime Minister or Deng Xioping. Well Xi is still alive. Deng died in 1997, but Joe had said he'd negotiated with Deng in 2006 to get the Paris Climate Accords signed.

Joe suddenly halted, he blinked, he furrowed his brow and his voice trailed off. He may have realized that he'd said too much, and had made a gaffe by saying he would tell a long dead man to do something. Or he may have realized that the theft of technology didn't have all that much to do with Little Rocket Man.

But if you can recall the scene from The Caine Mutiny trial where Humphrey Bogart, playing Captain Queeg, realizes that he's said too much and has essentially convicted himself--you'd recognize the look on Biden's face.

There's no doubt in my mind that Biden is playing with less than a full mental deck.

10. Warren accuses Bloomberg of saying something he says he never said: "Kill it" (to a pregnant woman). Big reaction from the audience.

Why?

it's just a "splooge stooge", right? It's not a baby, it's not a person, it's just a clump of cells.

If it's ok to kill that clump of cells, you don't get to bitch at someone for telling the woman she should kill that clump of cells.

Bloomberg needs Biden out of the race if he, Bloomberg, wants to stop Sanders- it really is that simple at this point. If Biden stays in til April, Sanders can't be stopped. Even worse for Bloomberg is this- it doesn't look like Buttuvwxyz will drop out before April either, nor Klobuchar at this point if she wins Minnesota on Tuesday. We are looking at 5-6 candidates (who knows what Steyer and Warren are going to do) splitting the anti-Sanders vote, and that vote looks to me to be about 60-65%, and could be as low as 55%. That can't be split more than two ways if you really want to stop Sanders cleanly. At this point, it is all but certain that Sanders is going to have the most votes and the most pledged delegates going into the convention.
