"I do not think that anybody — Bernie Sanders or anyone else — should simply get the nomination because they have 30 percent of the delegates and no one else has that many."

"Let’s say that he has 35 percent. Well, 65 percent he doesn’t have, or that person doesn’t have. I think that we have to let the system work its way out. I do not believe anyone should get the nomination unless they have 50-[percent]-plus-one.... A lot people in the race still, but they’ll be dropping off quick, because the money is running out. So I think you’re going to have the field winnowing fairly quickly. And you have most of the people who are not Bernie Sanders, are people who are moderates, and maybe they’ll work something out to get together and try to find that one person who can come up with the number of delegates. Maybe that’s one way to do it.... I just don’t think you can give the nomination to somebody who has 65 percent of the people that made a different decision."

Said Harry Reid, the former Senate majority leader, from his office at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, quoted in "Harry Reid says Sanders needs more than plurality to win Democratic nomination" (WaPo).

That sounds right to me, but there are times when I think it's becoming so likely that Trump will win that those who are trying to shape the future of the Democratic Party might prefer to let Bernie Sanders take the nomination and then go on to fail and fail big. That way, the left-wing extreme takes the blame, the loss can be massaged into the argument that the socialist move is a proven disaster, and the liberal moderates can reclaim control. If Sanders gets the most votes/delegates going into the convention, but the convention works out a way to give the nomination to someone else, the far left will rage on for another 4 years with a sense of entitlement that it's certainly their turn in 2024. And let's say that convention picks Pete Buttigieg, the shining new talent. Then, he'd be ruined for 2024. Save him. Let him age for 4 years. And give him a clear run at the presidency in 2024, after Trump is gone and after the Democrats prove to themselves that Americans won't vote for left-wing extremism.

Unfortunately actually truly dealing with exploding Social Security as well as other entitlements are political dead ends. I expect they'll reach an absolute crisis point before there's enough collective political will to actually do anything real about them, and of course by then it'll be too late. There's precious few elected politicians who are willing to even address those particular problems, other than oddballs like Rand Paul. I mean, who wants to be demonized as a monster who is risking grandma's only means of living?

But of course some politicians will pay lip service to the $22 trillion and growing debt as a way to criticize some program or budget as wasteful (as if they're actually gonna do anything about it). It's bad enough when Republicans do it, but I find it a little rich when Democrats try to bring up the debt in such a way. After all, they are the party who are all in on massive new entitlement programs like "Medicare for All".

It's like we're in a boat thats slowly sinking because of a slow leak. The Republicans are suggesting we widen the leak a little bit, but the Democrats are suggesting that we gouge it open with a hatchet.

Hello? There are tons of polls out there showing Bernie will beat Trump. You may know Bernie is a Commie, I may know Bernie is a Commie, but the average Boobus Americanus does NOT know, the DNC-media isn't going to tell them.

Trump will struggle to get elected. There is a hard-core Democrat vote. Blacks will vote D - 80-90%, foreign-born vote 2-1 Democrat, Jews vote 2-1 Democrat, Hispanics vote 2-1 Democrat. Soccer Moms and women like Althouse never go more than 50-50 Republican and usually 55-45 D or worse.

Put Bernie up for President and he has 45% of the vote locked up, just like ANY Democrat.

We don't need to elect Bernie to discover the failure of left-wing extremism. We've had that since Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public school mis-education, Great Society Welfare and lately Obamacare.

Now is the time to treat all persons equally -- male & female, black, brown, yellow and white, married and single, gay and straight, breeder and non-breeder, religious and none, citizen and foreigner.

I think the Great Mexican Wall stands as a symbol of the oppression officially practiced still against women, persons of color, gays, non-breeders, atheists and foreigners.

I’m not sure how Bernie is going to win.

I mean he’s not generating any more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016 and his chances are better. Turnout in the democrat primaries has been the same as 2016 as I recall.

Who voted for trump who will now vote Bernie?

Plus trump peels off a chunk of minority voters on top of his core.

Can talk all the time about how everyone is a socialist but even in California last election, statewide rent control got shot down for example. Bernie wants nationwide rent control. I mean come on.

So how does Bernie win?

I just look at the polls and history. There's no reason to think Trump is going to "peel off minority voters". Blacks NEVER get "Peeled off" - no matter how hard the R's go after them. They vote 80-90 Percent Democrat.

Let me remind you that in 1960, blacks voted 68-32 for JFK, even though Nixon had helped push through the 1957 Civil Rights bill and Kennedy's Vice President - LBJ - supported segregation. Since then, no Republican POTUS candidate has ever gotten more than 15%.

And how exactly does Trump calculate the profit? And Trump refuses to provide details on how much the government is being charged at his properties.

Let buttigeg age for 4 years? Doing what? He's the mayor of a small town with over-sized presidential ambitions. What can he do for the next four years? What's he suited for? The only thing that comes to mind is to be a game show host.

How would you calculate the profit? Pretend you own a hotel and collect a thousand dollars a day per room. How much is overhead? How much extra non direct expense in involved housing required presidential entourage?

How much money to *you* think Trump is robbing us taxpayers of for SS housing? How much more than Obama's posse, or any other prior President? Must be billions..

I wonder if they know how ridiculous they are beginning to sound.

Newsom gonna be dem candidate in 2024 or 28, I guarantee it."

More likely he'll go the way of Jerry Brown if he runs, unless he gets the Gray Davis treatment before then.

Hope so. Newsom used to be kinda normal. Now he is making Moonbeam seem conservative

You really think he's skimming a few dollars off the top?

His current budget calls for cutting both Medicare and Medicaid.

No, it does not.

Jim at said...

And come on, how many times have you trotted out that revenues have increased after tax cuts as proof that tax cuts "increase" revenue?

Every time. Know why? Because that's what actually happens.

Even JFK would call you an idiot.

I Callahan said...

If per capita spending is cut, then it is indeed a cut.

Has there been a drop in population for people eligible for social security? No? Then stop with the straw men.

When there is less money in the budget for SS this year than last year, it’s a cut. If there’s the same or more, it’s not. Period.

Whatever would Buttigieg do until 2024? I think for him it's downhill from here.

What will the Bernie Bros do if the DNC prevents Sanders from getting the nomination as it clearly intends to do? Well, they won't burn down Milwaukee. Our plan is to pelt them with cheese curds. As this alien substance looking like a giant white snail attaches on to them, they will panic and run into nearby Lake Michigan or the river. For those who escape Operation Curd, we'll post signs: Chicago this way. Some pointing north, some south is my idea but others advocate a marathon track protected by traffic cones for safety (Oh, Wisconsin) and extending down to the border. They think that if we cheer enough and have cameras going and papermache TV cameras much in evidence, the delegates will just run along the track out of our lives. Or we could just rely on the fact that the city is made of stone and brick to withstand the fog, mist, drizzle, rain, drip which keep it so green.

Anyhow, I think the question is - what will happen if Candidate Whoever tries to run on a policy of Let's Return To Stinking Situation 2016? We used to think that the bad economy and wars were just how things were. Now we know the mess and misery came from bad policy - said by Trump and proved by Trump. And Candidate Whoever is going to run on a plan to go back to misery? Take water from the farmers, jobs from the miners and frackers, cheap gas from everyone, return power to MidEast despots, return us to endless war. And then go on to make it worse than before with Plan Misery More - take the guns, ban free speech, turn off air conditioning, take away existing cars and furnaces, take away cheap food, beat up dissenters, abort the born leading to kill the old ... Quite the platform. Unique. Althouse is right to wish Pete out of it.

PS Bloomberg who is paying $2500$ a month for people to get on social media and post for him. They aren't here yet. Inga isn't that, though she said: "No Democrats including myself would vote for Trump over Bloomberg. Bloomberg may be a billionaire and a Trump mini me in some ways, but precious few Democrats will be voting for Trump." She's too committed.

He calculates it by not taking any. the only charge is for the cost of housekeeping. BTW calculating profits per occupied room is not difficult

At the risk of offending Ann and my gay son I will predict that neither now nor in 2024 will the Democratic party nominate Pete. The Black vote which is critical in the Southern primaries will never be there for a gay man.

Pete can't be President. His last name is unpronounceable.

frenchy said...

The fact the "Buttigeg" is not pronounceable is not the biggest problem for Pete with that name.

What "moderates" are we talking about? I dont see any and quite frankly never did. They all want to give free everything to illegals, including healthcare. Pay reperations. Everything is the white mans fault. And we are all a bunch of racists. Nothing moderate there. This is what the Democrats have become. Does not matter a damn bit who they run and Bernie is just a little more "pure" when it comes to socialism.
