Find your thrill on Bloombergery Hill.

The fine print says:
Sources close to Bloomberg campaign tell DRUDGE REPORT that candidate is considering Hillary Clinton as running mate, after their polling found the Bloomberg-Clinton combination would be formidable force... MORE

DRUDGE has learned that Bloomberg himself would go as far as to change his official residence from New York to homes he owns in Colorado or Florida, since the electoral college makes it hard for a POTUS and VPOTUS from the same state... Developing...
I think this is dull news. Of course, Bloomberg is "considering" all the possible running mates. He'd have to announce his choice during the primaries and have her out there running with him for it to mean anything. Does anyone picture that happening?

It would be wildly distracting, but I don't see it helping Bloomberg. He needs to establish himself as presidential. And she'd be taking a step down from where she was last time. Why would that work? Why would she do it? Why would he do it? Makes little sense except as a Saturday internet diversion.

Big Mike said...

I'm not up to date on the Electoral College,

I looked it up. The President and Vice President can both be from the same state but in that case an elector from that state cannot vote for them. One or the other must come from a different state than the elector. It’s part of the 12th Amendment, which is the one that calls for the President and Vice President to be voted for as a ticket. So a Bloomberg/Clinton ticket could not get any of New York’s 29 electoral votes, and that’s a lot of electoral votes to throw away.

of course, they say that, and then follow it up by saying: That's WHY you sure vote for ME!
BUT!
Let's Assume, for One Minute, that that WAS what mattered... How could they do it?

Here's the easy way (in fact, Probably the ONLY Way)
They need to (at the convention, but Even Better: RIGHT NOW) draft Mitt Romney

As Al Smith would say, let's take a look at the record.
Mitt Romney is NOT Trump
Mitt Romney CREATED O'Bama care
Mitt Romney isn't just supported by the deep state; he is a Member of the deep state
There would be VERY Little difference between a Romney Presidency and any other democrat

If Romney won the democrat nomination...
. MOST (nearly all) democrats (legal, illegal, living, dead) would vote for him
. MANY independents would vote for him
. SOME republicans would vote for him
That sure sounds like 270 electoral votes to me

That leaves; IF the democrats called, would Mitt answer
I think we ALL know the answer to that question

So,
Would the democrats Do that? I'm not worried about it, or i wouldn't be giving them ideas
The democrats would rather rule in hell, than serve in heaven

Of course the "deal" would probably be Bloomy as President for 1 term and then stepping aside for "health reasons" to allow a VP Clinton to run from a position of fully weaponized federal govt support.

Drago, you have always struck me as one of the more intelligent commenters here so this puzzles me. Could you explain why you think the vice presidency, weaponized or no, would be a stepping stone rather than a road block for Hilary?

Sitting vice presidents, going back to the 12th Amednment, never get elected. There were 2 exceptions, Bush and Van Buren (1838)

There are reasons for this. The kind of person who is willing, for whatever reasons, to accept an "Assistant to" position like VP is seldom seen as anything much more. A president needs to be a leader, not an assistant to and not someone with that mentality.

One of the reasons they were nominated as VP was to be in the shade of the Prez and not upstage them.

VPs seldom have executive experience. Hilary has 4 years as sec state so there is that. But how many regard that as successful executive experience?

The other is historical. We've had a number of vps run. Biden, Gore, Bush*, Mondale, Ford, Nixon, others going back. Bush is the only one who ran successfully and he is also the only one who had executive experience.

We've had others, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Truman, Coolidge, TR, others in the 19th century, who got in on the death/resignation of the president. None were elected to a second full term (not counting the stub term) None, except Coolidge and TR have been regarded as competent presidencies. Both of them had executive experience too.

So Drago, and anyone else, I am interested in explaining how this myth that I have been hearing since the 1960 election, "The vice-presidency is a stepping stone to the presidency." works.

Not a rhetorical question. I am seriously interested in hearing why anyone thinks that any VP, sitting or former, is any kind of viable presidential candidate.

Someone mentioned that Hilary may have been reading about LBJ. Yeah, but that doesn't work as well as it used to.

When LBJ took the vice-presidency, 20% of all presidents had died in office. Per Caro, LBJ looked at the odds and figured they were better than him actually getting elected.

Since then, we have had 10 more presidents leave office vertically if we assume PDJT lasts the year. Not sure what the math is but the chances are considerably less. Maybe 10%?

Not to say that an unscrupulous LBJ or Hilary couldn't load the dice, so to speak.

I would love to see Hilary admit what a failure she is by running for VP and losing.

I understood your comment to be that the vice presidency would position Hilary for a 2024 presidential run and Mike B would stay out of her way.

For reasons I explained, just no.

If, on the other hand, you mean that they get elected then MB resigns, yes, she would become president by succession. I think that would even further doom any 2024 presidential run.

LBJ got elected on a sympathy vote in 64. Would there be any sympathy vote for Hilary because MB resigned? Would there be the opposite? A perception of some kind of sleazy deal? I think the latter.

Under your scenario Hilary is a pathetic, half-term, unelected president.

Given that Bush and Ford took over from Presidents that won re-election handily (Reagan and Nixon), one could be pardoned for suggesting that a Republican VP generally stands an excellent chance of taking over for the President at some point. Many VP's are selected for their contacts in the legislature, or their ability to work with Congress due to personal skill. As a way to get personal face time with the President, or be trusted with incredible amounts of influence over the federal agenda, a VP is hard to beat for party support- unless, like Obama, you pick a completely useless non-entity for the slot. VPs generally don't have the telegenic charm to appeal like "outsider" candidates- but then, if the outgoing President was popular, they don't have to. They win based on their ability to be the "third term." Which is why Bush managed it once, and Ford/ Gore didn't manage it at all.

But you asked about Drago's deal, and I think it's uncharacteristically off-base for him to suggest. Obama wasn't stupid enough to take that deal, and Hillary had vastly more influence with the party and America in general 12 years ago. Bloomberg knows that Hillary will try to put a knife in his back five seconds after getting a VP nod. Unlike TR or even Bush (but not LBJ), she won't hesitate to instigate a tragedy if she could benefit from it.

Not quite. New York's electors could still vote Bloomberg/somebody or somebody/Clinton. In the first case, if there isn't a majority for the VP, then the vote goes to the Senate, where we can presume that Trump's running mate (I expect Pence will stay on) will win, giving Bloomberg/Pence. In the second case, if there isn't a majority for Pres, then the vote goes over to the House, where we can expect Trump to win, thus leading to the situation where we have Trump as President and Clinton as VP - I'd expect VP Clinton to be sent on an extended diplomatic negotiation mission to North Korea, just for Trump's safety.

"While he was acquitted for her murder, a jury found him guilty of felony possession of a gun. That state conviction was overturned in August 2019 by an appeals court.

On Friday a court said he was not competent to stand trial for the federal gun possession charges.

...

Garcia-Zarate had been previously deported five times, and admitted that he sought out refuge in San Francisco because of the liberal city's sanctuary city policies."

Gun control and Sanctuary city policies are core democrat policies.

They are evil. They are secessionist. Anyone who supports democrats has chosen.

It is time for democrats to lose another civil war.

Hillary is a sure loser and they all know it. There is a machinery there though and this may be the signal to them they have a new patron.

Michelle is going to be the new hotness. But I think Buttigieg already made a deal with camp Obama.

I am not sure the relationship between Bloomberg and Obama though my guess is it is not great.

Let’s cut to the chase: Bloomberg doesn’t think he can win. He is out excuse-shopping. Hillary? Who cares about her? They lose, he blames her. Then everybody blames her.

Bloomberg understands hedging.

Naw man. Bloomberg definitely thinks he can win.

Bloomberg thinks he is smarter and better at everything. He is a control freak.

Bloomberg said it was disgraceful that the NAACP opposed his soda bans because they should understand how fat sodas were making black people who needed to be told what to do.

Bloomberg is an executive and an alpha. He does not let equals stand in the same room without a purpose that serves him.

It does not take much success to make people like this believe the world needs them.

I agree Althouse.

On its own merits the story just as you allude; a nothingburger.

But moreover, there’s some really important news right now. The release of the White House memo on the General Soleimani strike contains no mention of any “imminent” threat. The AP has done a fact check on this he string of mind boggling falsehoods uttered by Trump at his New Hampshire rally. Including the bizarre wording of Trump’s phony claim that Mexican “redemptions” would pay for a border wall.

Or the $3 trillion increase in the National Debt during Trump’s three years occupying the Oval Office.

that means she'd be hooked back into government graft?

Whatever Biden does, she can do better.

Steven said...

If Bloomberg is actually considering this, he's brain-dead enough to qualify as an organ donor. Just like anyone who keeps ranting about the "imminence" of the threat from the head of the Iran's state-sponsored international terrorism operations.

Elijah Manley, a 20-year-old activist running for Florida state House, was offered $6,500 a month to be an adviser on Social Justice & Black Youth Policy on the Bloomberg campaign, he said. He told the campaign he was a Sanders supporter but that didn’t seem to sway them, he told The Intercept. Asked how temping the offer was on a scale of 1-10, he said that it was a 10, citing the poor health of his mother and grandmother. “We’re barely above water. The money would have been a plus financially,” he said. “But hell, I’d rather be broke than a sellout.”

Thank goodness not everyone is a sell-out.

Makes little sense except as a pitch to former Hill voters who might still be "making plans" and "seeing what happens."

Makes little sense except if you assume that a bunch of "moderates" don't vote on policy or principle, apart from abortion forever, but can be persuaded to vote for the "best person," someone "serious."

Is she really that stupid? Does she really believe we have a national language?

What we have is a First Amendment. I can go around speaking Tibetan if I choose.

Or I can speak in a gibberish looking code such as PGP.

It does not give anyone else the obligation to understand me, of course.

It seems the context is that she previously voted to make English the national language, but now she wants to go back on that vote.

Not sure what your point is with Gen Soleimani. His people had just attacked our embassy, presumably at his direction, and they had other pending plans underway. It is just plain silly to think that we could justify killing him when one of his numerous attacks on us was imminent. That might be a legitimate metric for low level terrorists, but cannot be legitimate for a terrorist commander with thousands of terrorists reporting to him. Picking supporting a terrorist commander, with hundreds of American dead to his credit over the lives of the hundreds of American bodies that he was likely to wrack up in the future, is not the in our country’s interest.

Michele Obama's wisest advice to Barack was don't do it: you don't want to be the heartbeat between Hillary and the Presidency.

wildswan said...

He's buying up all the campaign workers so the other candidates are having trouble finding staff. He's buying ad time, robo calls. So we gotta assume he's looking into buying a Hillary. I love it. "Michael Bloomberg explained yesterday that he thinks buying the election won't be particularly expensive. "The last one cost, what, 3 billion? I've got $58 billion. Hillary was expensive but the point is that with her as vice-president I'll get that billion back in the first year and after that with her help I expect to easily recoup my other expenses. And as I said to her,'Look, Joe Biden made plenty as vp, we all saw that, get over the idea that you need to be President to clean up. So that swung the deal.' "
