You know what would lower the cost of college tuition? Less regulations, each one of which requires administrators to ensure compliance.

Steyer seems to be doing well in South Carolina.

I have to say that he, together with Bloomberg, reflect rather poorly on the Democrat electorate, that they can be bought so cheaply. All it takes is money for commercials and a large proportion of the Democrat voters are eager to follow like brainless sheep.

On my deathbed I will not be lamenting about the Unesco World Heritage Sites that I didn't get to visit. Question for my fellow Althouse commenters: should i disclose this truth to mrs. stevew's world traveling mom?

Yancey Ward said...

I wonder if it would be to Sanders' benefit to come up just a percent or two short of winning in South Carolina. That would kill Bloomberg by inducing Biden to continue through March.

$1.50/hr in 1973 sounds right to me Aunty, I was bussing at Friendly's at that time.

Yancey Ward said...

The most interesting thing about Nevada was that Sanders increased his advantage in realignment- this means he was the preferred second choice of Warren, Klobuchar, and Steyer supporters- at least he was preferred to both Biden and Buttuvwxyz. It appears that the majority of Warren and Klobuchar's supporters' second choice was Klobuchar and Warren. I predict that when Warren and Klobuchar drop out, Sanders will get most of the supporters of both women- Bloomberg will get almost none, Buttuvwxyz some, and Biden the rest.

Yancey Ward said...

In other words, the realignment suggests that Sanders' ceiling isn't as low as I thought it would be- he is the second choice of the supporters of the other candidates more than I expected he would be.

Part of the problem with racial statistics in America is the confounding influence of "Hispanic," which is not really a racial category. If you look at non-Hispanic whites, the number is in the low 60% range. And, of course, there is a lot of variance by state. In California, for example, the number of non-Hispanic whites is around 35%.

Most people that identify as Hispanic today are typically some mixture of European, Indigenous American, and sub-Saharan African. Using traditional phenotypic indicators (e.g. skin tone, hair texture, face shape), you can often guesstimate with some reasonable accuracy. So, for example, even though Marco Rubio and Sammy Sosa are both classified as Hispanic, it is a reasonable bet to assume that Sosa has a greater degree of sub-Saharan African ancestry than Rubio.

But what they did a few years ago was allow leasing. Mercedes Beamers Audis some South Korean a few American. I flew back from Copenhagen yesterday. Our driver told us this. He also said since Denmark doesn’t really like cars they’re going to be re-instituting or they’re going to be changing that Lease law.

One of our tour guide also said the Danes are very against showing their wealth. No name brands. No status. It’s frowned upon. Just good quality Danish clothing etc. etc. So we asked her what about all the status cars. She’s young she sees things differently.

They have “high unemployment”. They are also building hotels like crazy. For the cruise ships. Wish right now are more filled with Americans than Chinese. They also have electric scooters and electric bikes. As my husband pointed out I wonder where all those batteries are going to go when they pass their shelf life.

Here is a thought experiment:

What schemes are being hatched at DNC and Bloomberg HQ to get Bernie to drop out (health reasons always works--he's 78, he had some sort of heart incident, he says--he won't release his medical records--and no one looks good snooping)?

Should he go before or after the convention? Assuming that the DNC could pick the candidates, I say after--he wins the nomination and then falls on the field of battle with a heart-rending appeal to the Bernie Bros. to stay the course with the Bloomberg-Stacy Abrams ticket.

How much will Bloomberg have to pay to get Bernie to drop out? I say Bernie should hold out for $50 million after tax. I assume that Bloomberg can get him that much--Bloomberg's a publisher, for heaven's sake, and he needs advice, products, and editorial help. Have you seen what MLB pays for a great glove, no stick shortstop who can turn a double play?

Will the DNC use threats? No opinion.

Is there an ultimate solution? No opinion.

Will the FSB take an interest in Bernie's health, just to stir things up? Maybe.

How about the Mossad? How about the Quds Force? How about Antifa? How about the Little Sisters of the Poor?

Folks, we have a Vince Flynn thriller here.

It is so regional. Here in PHX, it is mostly Mexican, which means a mixture of white and indigenous. Some have dark skin, but not that many here. More in other parts of the SW. Mostly their skin is fairly light just a touch of well blended coffee in the very white cream, and inevitably dark brown eyes. Sometimes, you first think just European. But then you notice that ouch of coffee. Their skin color is much better blended than you usually see here in this country of black and white, suggesting a much longer and more thorough blending. Their faces tend to be fairly round, looking like no indigenous tribes from the US - far from the Cherokee and eastern Indians with their sharper features, and different from the almost Mongolian look of the Navajo and related tribes we see most here. What is interesting though is that in the middle of an extended family you will occasionally see an older member who has much darker skin and less attractive features, which suggests being much closer to their indigenous roots. Likely not just coincidentally, the high school students nearby are the Aztecs. Forget that most times as I drive by it, but noticed Aztec shirts for sale at Walmart yesterday. Supposedly, a large number of the males have Spanish Y chromosomes, and most have East Asian mitochondria, suggesting a lot of Spanish paternity mixed with Indian maternity. Overall, with my European sentiments, a fairly attractive people, except that in this part of town, they tend to be a bit pudgy (but without quite the level of obesity that we see here with esp Blacks).

The funny thing is that it is often fairly easy to detect the difference between the Mexicans who are recent immigrants from the ones I grew up with, and esp in the band running from Santa Fe up through Alamosa in CO. A lot of them look more Spanish, but they also have more prominent Indian features. My guess some of the difference is that the Mexicans here had been intermixing for much of the last 500 years in a decent sized population, whereas their relatives who immigrated here much earlier had not mixed nearly as well - one or two centuries, versus almost five centuries.

I got off on this sidetrack because yesterday I was playing a game with myself, as I often do, seeing how long it takes to identify the very predominant Mexican characteristics of the people I see walking by. The difference is sometimes very subtle. And, rarely here, that difference is missing, and only know that they are Hispanic because of their family grouping one interesting aspect is that you do see a surprising amount of black/Mexican pairings, but it is all very recent., because the mixture hasn’t matured, so still looks mixed.

Back to Farmer’s point - the Hispanics here look nothing like the Cubans and Puerto Rican’s you see back East. They all mostly look more white than anything else. Indeed, they all look more white than sharing any specific Hispanic characteristic.
